My buddy walks into my house a couple nights ago during the game against Cleveland, a big dumb grin plastered across his face, and says, "West's jumper is as soft as a fluffy bunny!"
After I had stared at him like he was an idiot for a few seconds, he finally explained that he had just heard that from one of the announcers during the radio broadcast of the game. Being a good blogger, I immediately filed it away for the next David West specific post I made. Don't say I never did anything for you.
To keep in line with that gloriously awful gem of a quote, I've got another batch of broadcaster quotes I've noticed over the last few games regarding West.
- "David West likes to Kill the Grizzlies" - Memphis announcer
- "West always seems to have big games against the Bobcats" - Charlotte announcer
- "West always plays well against the Cavs" - Cavaliers announcer.
- "He always seems to get up for games against the Raptors." - Toronto announcer, talking about West
- "David West loves playing the Clippers. He just kills them." - LA Clipper announcer.
There are a couple things that you can take from these quotes. One is I get stuck listening to the other teams announcers way too freaking much on League Pass. Two, the other teams announcers have finally caught on that West can really score. Good for them, he's only been doing it for more than two years.
Now, when I first started hearing quotes like that, I'll admit I enjoyed them. Nothing like hearing one of your teams players praised by the other side. But now they have begun to irritate me. I'm probably overthinking this, but to me there's a subtle subtext to all those quotes: This guy saves his big games for our team. Therefore, big games aren't normal from him.
I mean, think about it. When Kobe or Iverson or Wade take the floor, the announcers don't say, "Here he comes, that guy loves to kill OUR team." No, those players are recognized scorers. If they drop twenty-five or thirty-five points on a team, it's par for the course. If West does it? It must be a special event.
C'mon. The guy's been scoring 18+ for three years now. Can we just accept he's a good player and scorer now? And can we get the guy enough All-Star votes that he can at least crack the top ten forwards in the West? Let's give him some respect!
How can we not respect him? He's got a Fluffy Bunny Jumpshot!

Laughed at loud at the league pass/announcer crack- man can I relate to that. David has been an absolute beast. CP3 should be a no-brainer for the All Star game. Tyson and Peja have both been contributing well night in-night out. We have FOUR kick ass starting players- with Mo Pete at least playing decent D, and not hurting us with turn overs or brick-fests. This team is so close to really contending for a title, it will be a damn shame if they can't tinker with the supporting cast enough to at least get into the second round of the playoffs this year.

I dunno. As an avid bunny lover, I'm very accustomed to the softness of a fluffy bunny, and I must say that West's jumper is not quite that soft. But nice post. It's hard to believe that the guy still gets slept on so much. Interesting quotes from him in today's T-P too, saying how he doesn't try to sell himself and just wants to play ball. That probably has a lot to do with him staying under the radar.

D.West is one of the best kept secrets in the NBA. And he belongs to the Hornets. Hooray for our team!!

Just read where Damon Stoudamire has been relegated to third string back up pg in memphis. His contract runs about 4 mil and is good through next year. Wouldn't be a long term commitment for our fron office- and Memphis's record is so bad- they might not even care about helping us in the short run. Would still prefer one of the Seattle PGs, but Stoudamire could help.

I think Damon sucks. Has anyone been watching this guy?

Stoudamire's pulling down 7 points and 4 assts in 20 min/night. I think CP3 would get to keep his starting job- but not too fugly for a back-up point.

In that case I think I'd rather Earl Watson. He plays like 6 more minutes than Damon... 8pts, 6asts and 6 years younger. Damon is about the same age as Bobby. He gives about the same points as Damon but not as many assists as Damon because of course Bobby is a chucker for the most part.

I'm not crazy about Damon Stoudamire, but it sounds like the Grizzlies might give him up for a crappy return. I don't think he'd cure much of the bench woes though.

As a Pistons fan with League Pass, I feel the same way dude. First of all, I feel I get the other teams announcers at least 65% of the time...shouldn't they just use the home team's announcers as a general rule? I hate listening to some Cleveland jackass when the game is at the Palace. Second, I also hear the same comments over and over again. If I have to hear the story about how Chauncey Billups bounced from team to team for years before he settled in Detroit, I'm gonna rip the cable out of the wall...
