A few weeks back, we began a quest to find David West a nickname. It proved to be a popular mission and you fine readers were funky enough to make a bunch of suggestions. Some were good, some were bad. There didn't seem to be any clear way to pick a winner however, so we decided to ask David West himself.
My main man Toney Blare had himself a press credential for last Monday's Hornets-Nuggets showdown in the Big Easy, and had the opportunity to present our list of potential monikers to West pregame. I'll let Toney tell the rest...
When I walked into the Hornets locker, CP3 was on the floor stretching, headphones on. I said what's up, then introduced myself to DWest again.
"I'm David."
Right. So I explained that I was there on SLAM biz, but that a certain Hornets fansite of great renown, creativity, and allegiance, had asked me to relay some possible nicknames for this would-be All-Star. I held up a printout of Ron's email with the list.
"Mr. Shush?... These sound like wrestling names."
He looked some more.
"And One."
"You like that one?"
"I don't know, I guess... Fluffy?"
"Yeah, I think they're talking about your facial hair."
He laughed at that one.
"What do you think about Big Easy D-Weezy?" I asked him.
"Yeah, there's some guy who always yells that at the games."
"From up on the upper deck?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, he came up with that, he's a crazy guy."
We talked another minute about Kenyon Martin and a one-time college match-up, and that was about it. I headed out, not sure if he had a nickname, but proud that the reputation of Mikey SeasonTickets had spread to the innards of New Orleans Arena and the heart (sorta) of the Hornets' star forward.
Legend.
Big thanks to Toney for asking those all-important questions. Kinda freaky how he predicted West to be an All-Star, too. (He wrote the above on Tuesday.) You can catch his full report of the game that night over at SLAMonline.
To wrap this up, here's the list of nicknames that were presented to West...
- The Finisher
- The Barber
- The Statement
- Stealth
- Mr. Shush
- The Dean
- And One
- Fluffy
- Sonar
- DX-Factor
- Big Easy D-Weezy
- The Who
- Whirlpool
- Rawhide
- X-Pac
- D-Spect

Yeah, he didn't exactly pick one in the end, so we're not really any closer to having one definitive nickname for him. This was all a bit futile really, wasn't it? Oh well, I had my fun.

Artest, Maggette, Miller 3 guys who all have the ability to hit from deep(thus spread the floor) and slah to the basket. All3 have ability to play near all star basketball. All 3 are very much available because all 3 play for crappy teams looking to dump them. Artest is on the final year of his deal, maggette has 2 years left and is an FA the same year CP's extension comes up, Miller has 3 years left therefore making him the most unlikely of the 3 the hornets target. So which one should the honrets go after, i dont care i just want one of them. Miller is the best shooter of the group and the best all around offensive player, but does he play great enough defense??, Maggette is the worst shooter of the group but the best slasher and is a preety good defender, Artest is the bets all around play of the group, probably the best defensive player in the NBA when he's not being crazy, and he brings a whole new level of toughness and just a mean streak to this team. Yes artest maybe crazy but he also has a good relationship with Scott you know Artest would probably make this a championchip team. Imagine how great defensivky we would be with Artest, Chandler and Paul. Arest would also make West more willing to defend people. Jackson, Wright(try and give them armstrong first), 1st round pick for Arest. Jackson,Armstrong,1st round pick for Maggette. Hornets need to make one of these two moves.

While I would like to see the Hornets go after big name FA's, I think the starting five we have now is pretty damned good. Now if we can get some solid backups we have a team to watch out for.

If we go after artest or maggette her is our team . PG-Paul/Pargo..SG-Artest(Maggette)/Peterson...SF-Peja/Peterson... PF-West/Bowen....C-Chandler/Ely Peterson comming of the bench would give our bench a whole new spark, I would feel very comftarble with Pargo, Peterson, Bowen, Ely and one of the starters(west/chandler out on the court. Plus if we Butler does not get moved than maybe he will start play with some confidence and start making some shots. Pargo/Peterson/Butler/Bowen/Ely is a great bench.

Yeah, fluffy is still the 'coolest' nickname for West. Hey tho, I'm proud that my suggestion "Whirlpool" was suggest to DWest. "Methinks" (LOL) he liked it best, just cuz i gave it to him.

Ryan, please explain Fluffy so everyone can realize how cool it is. That way next time someone talks to DWest they can explain it correctly.

Excuse me while I drop in for a Mardi Gras pit stop. I'm having the time of my life out there. Watching the end of that Super Bowl on a big screen on Saint Charles as parade floats went past... doesn't get much better than that. Anyways, sticking with the topic at hand, I believe some announcer said West's jumpshot was as soft as a fluffy bunny, and that's how it started. Can't recall the announcer. Ryan? I also recall somebody saying that "nobody's afraid of Fluffy until he rises up and DUNKS IN YOUR FACE!!!" Me likey.

Yup, you got it right Ron. I heard it on Sirius radio on the way over to Ryan's for a game one night. (I come over at half time and some times I just can't help but check how we are doing...Ryan TiVOs the game and can't stand commercials so we start watching near half time) It might have been an ESPN radion announcer but didn't catch his name.

Dude, usually I'd say screw you, but the way West has played the last three games, I've got nothing.
