The magic is back, baby.
The three game slide sobered us all up and made us forget that buzz the Hornets have been delivering so much this season, but tonight's game in Phoenix was probably the best bundle of funkiness yet.
I can barely form a coherent thought right now because my brain has never before been through such a range of emotions in such a short space of time. Best jump right to bullet mode...
- Final score was 132-130 after double overtime. Linkage: box | recap | standings
- I'll get to the individuals in a minute, but I think the whole team needs to be commended for coming out and refusing to roll over in this one. The effort was back to a more familiar level, something that wasn't apparent during the losing streak. The defensive rotation was significantly better, even though we did end up giving Phoenix too many open looks down the (long) stretch. For me though, those few momentary lapses can't cancel out a night of awesome hustle on the defensive end. Phoenix are an offensive juggernaut and we did a solid job.
- Peja Stojakovic was unbelievable even before he hit that last shot and sent me crashing to my living room floor in pure elation. I loved how we were looking for him all game, running him off picks and trying to get him open looks right from the first quarter. He created his own shot quite a few times tonight, too, more than we're accustomed to seeing.
- But back to the final shot. Absolutely amazing. He shot that thing almost back over his shoulder at the basket, having faked Amare Stoudemire a little and turning back the other way. Impossible shot. There's no way he should hit that. But he did, and that's why we pay him the mega bucks.
- We put the ball in Chris Paul's hands twice to win it tonight, and he missed both times. However, 42 points, 9 assists, 8 steals, 5 rebounds and just one turnover tells you the guy's still on some MVP type shit. Way to bounce back from the Utah game, Chris.
- Jannero Pargo was our third hero in this one. He's been killing if consistently for a while now. Tonight he delivered pull-up jumpers, clutch free throws, and even an insane out-of-control layup late in the first overtime. Never scared.
- I was a little disappointed with David West and Bobby Jackson again tonight, but they definitely came up with some big plays and helped us get the win. Offensively, I think West is doing his best to cope with the double teams he's now seeing. He's forcing some shots, but I believe he'll learn to adjust and be effective at that end again before too long. Defensively however, he's still making me slap myself in disbelief. Prime example: That wide open Nash three to send it to a second overtime was a result of West not helping when his man picked Pargo out high. West followed a cutter down the lane instead, even though we were up three and knew Phoenix had to have a three.
As for Bobby, he had a tough night trying to slow the quick guards of the Suns. Barbosa in particular burned him up. I thought Bojangles played better as the game progressed though, and he closed out on the shooters pretty well in the end. - The Hornets have now won 13 straight overtime games, the longest such streak in NBA history. I think Rasual Butler may be working on the longest streak of missed jumpers in NBA history, but we won't talk about that.
- Gotta give the Suns credit for dragging this one out. They really made us earn it. I thought we had it won a dozen different times and they'd come back and get a bucket. Still don't get the Shaq thing, but that's neither here nor there.
- Speaking of, it would have been interesting if Shaq had been healthy and suited up for this one. Welcome to Phoenix, big man. Now get out there and give us 55 minutes.
- Hilton Armstrong. Sigh. I love the kid, but he kills me. For every nice move he makes, he delivers another two that have you shaking your head and wondering why the hell we gave up on Brandon Bass for this. He really had his hands full tonight with Amare. Tough cover. Head up, Hilton. I'm rooting for you, man.
- Oh hey, practice is canceled tomorrow because the game ran late, and Adam Haluska wore black pants tonight.
- Wow. I can't recall a single play involving Morris Peterson in this one. He played 19 minutes and finished with 2 points. Byron went to a small lineup of Paul, Pargo, Jackson, West and Peja for most of crunch time, and that worked pretty good.
- You know who really lost tonight? Everyone on the Northshore who couldn't watch the game because of the Cox-Charter dispute. And because they lost, the Hornets lost. How could you watch that game and not have the urge to go see one in person? We might have to start with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch to get this damn TV thing settled.
So the win tonight was big and massive and altogether huge. Not only did it break the infertility spell cast upon us by Deron William's witch doctor, but it also means we now own the tiebreaker with Phoenix and we remain neck and neck with Dallas in the standings. Just like a sneeze only better.
A billion more that can be said after this game, but I'll have to count on you fine readers to fill in the blanks in the comments. It's wicked late and I have to move back some furniture.

Damn what an awesome game. Every time I thought the Hornets had it won, the Suns would hit a three. And Chris Paul had two pretty good looks to end the game, twice, and couldn't deliver. Other than that though...42 pts, 9 assists, 8 steals, and 5 boards for CP. Granted, he only had 2 pts in OT and 2OT, but he also played 50 minutes and played stellar D on Nash (Nash had 10 TO's). Peja had 26 and 6, including the game winner AND a jumper to tie the game in regulation, J Pargo had 22, and DWest had 22 pts, 13 boards, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. 3-0 against the Suns baby, hell yeah. Here's hoping for another winning streak.

I couldn't get to a bar tonight to watch the game in Austin, but I was glued to the updates on my cell phone kicking myself for missing this one. I'm getting league pass after the all-star break. This is awesome. I know he was a ways from it and it WAS double overtime, but I'm going to fantasize about CP3 getting a quadruple-double.

that's odd that they don't carry Tyson jerseys at the Arena store. I got mine at Foot Locker. maybe they have Armstrong jerseys as well...but I would be surprised.

Pargo is becoming one of the best 6th men in the game. CP was amazing. Peja is becoming peja of old, he is amazing. West is still struggling, he needs to look for the mid range jumper and stop hesitating. We need to get rid of butler, its shooting is starting to get riiculous.

I had to order my Tyson jersey from the internet. We kept asking at the arena when they'd have them, and they kept saying they'd ordered them, but... still not there. Someday I'd like to do the airport thing, but everyone here was too drunk after the ending of that game.

I'd also like to do the airport thing, but I have this nagging habit called a job. That being said, I do think we should all band together and plan a trip out to the airport for one of their return trips. After the Chicago game anyone? Oh, and Ron, lest I forget your Adam Haluska fasion update. I think you have a good thing going there. Keep it up.

I'll do my best to check his snappy dress every game, Mikey. It's the little details that are so important, you know? I'll definitely be doing the airport thing soon. There's actually a guy on the HR boards who's leading the charge and we've started to get a mailing list going to rally troops. If anyone wants on there email me (ron at hornets247 dot com) and I'll pass it on.

Since I am in germany I normally miss out on the weekday games and just get the final score, but today I got up at 5am anticipating listening to the last 5 min of the Hornets win. I didn't expect to catch one of the most exciting games of the season. I think I woke up the neighbors with all my screaming after Peja hit that shot.

Man if we get Mike Miller, Maggette or Artest we are set to goona championchip run. Paul/Pargo Peterson/Miller(ginobli type role) Stojakovic West/Bowen Chandler/Ely There is the 9 man rotation, Pargo and Miller off the bench would be money.

the small ball lineup barely worked. how many times did we see pargo or chris having to guard one of their clutch three point shots to tie the game? don't you think a taller guy like peterson would have helped to make the shot tougher to get off than someone short like pargo. pargo was great, but jackson instead of peterson? thats dumb. west is a lazy defender. period. he's sucked for 4 games straight. pass out of double teams dude! you're not zach randolph!

I didn't have a problem with West last night. He was taking shots that he took during the winning streak - they were just rimming out. Sometimes that happens.

I agree that his shots simply wouldn't drop a lot of the time last night, but there were occasions where he should have passed out of those double teams. I think though that West is still adjusting to teams playing him more aggressively and sending multiple defenders at him. He'll figure it out. Defensively, I don't think it's laziness, but a lack of concentration on his part.

Pedja was on the court for 48 mins and had zero FTs and This is not a one game thing either. For some reason, his FT's attempts have all but disappeared in NO. I understand that he was hurt but he seems fine now so Im wondering if you have any ideas why this is happening. Pedja is one of the best FT shooters in the league and in the playoffs, FT's will be even more important. My brother was shocked when he saw his stat line but ive noticed this for a while. Is it an injury thing still or is his role now more of a spot up shooter? Teams that have shooters in the 90%+ range have to find ways to get them to the line.

Good question, rob. I hadn't really thought about it, but I guess it's mostly because we've been using Peja as a spot up shooter, or running him off picks for jumpers and guys rarely get fouled on those kind of shots. He looked to take his man off the dribble a couple of times in Phoenix, and hopefully he'll continue to do that because it makes him that much harder to guard. At the same time though, I'm not sure how much I want to see Peja trying to finish around the rim and taking knocks. He's made of eggshells you know.

the small ball lineup worked cuz pargo and chris were playing really well. other nights, when someone like pargo isn't lighting it up, i'd rather see peterson out there than jackson. flat out, jackson isn't quick enough nor is he tall enough to disrupt someone's three shot to tie the game.

i wasn't calling him lazy..but he does have lazy moments. like at the end of the game, where pargo was made a fool of, he wasn't supposed to follow his man to the hole, when they need a three to tie. the suns aren't stupid. they know when they are mere seconds left and down by three, they need to attempt a three and not a layup, because the other team will let them have the layup without fouling. instead of coming out, he went in...and poof, we have a short dude guarding someone like barbosa to tie the game? he doesn't help tyson enough. he's a big reason why we've been giving up 100 or more points for 4 games now. he's slowing down. tired? maybe the flu is coming his way. but no doubt he's clueless on defense and what to do on offense when double teamed. being doubled means you are good, so i hope he watches people like kg on tape and figure out how to pass to peja or mo who are open a lot! i love him. but he's kinda confused out there lately. hopefully its just midseason slumps. tyson does the same stuff too!

but no doubt he's clueless on defense and what to do on offense when double teamed. - by that i meant lately. this past week and a half. not the whole season! but he's a warrior, he'll get through it! hopefully he'll get confident enough to shoot without hesitating. he's good, but he has to believe in his shot like chris believes in him. hesitation is his biggest problem. the defense can be fixed with practice. hesitation is just mental. but the best game ever!

Great post Ron. I think I recognized that team last night. If Pargo keeps playing like he is maybe will have a chance at 6th man. A couple of weeks ago I heard he is coming in 2 hours early with CP3 to practice together. I think it is working. We got the game on COX last night in OKC. Too bad they can't get it all over NO. Just an unbelieveable game.

west might be the worst help defender in the nba, and its not because he doesnt have the ability its just that he is way too lazy on defense. and on offense he needs to stop forcing it and look for some pick and pop plays with paul, he needs to start look for the mid ranger shot more.
