DeShawn Stevenson delivered the final dagger with his buzzer-beating three-pointer tonight. That shot cost the Hornets a game they simply did not deserve to win. There we were, at full health, just two days removed from being on top of the Western Conference, playing a sub-500 team missing a pair of All-Stars, and we're tied with seven seconds left.
Stevenson's gamer was justice served.

Half-asleep game notes...
- Final score was 95-92 ( box | recap | standings ), with Stevenson's pull-up three from the wing proving to be the difference. He was on fire all night. Morris Peterson couldn't stop him, Mike James couldn't stop him, not even the buzzer could stop him. Dude dropped a career-high 33 points on 11-21 shooting. Good game, kid.
- Mo-Pete got creamed on what I believe was a Brendan Haywood screen near mid-court on that last play. Solid pick. Peja Stojakovic came over to try challenge the final shot, but seemed to forget to put his hands up.
- We did a lot of shit badly in this game, but the free throw shooting was probably the worst. We shot 12-of-22 overall. Mo-Pete bricked two big ones with about four minutes remaining. Hilton Armstrong did the same with seven seconds left, but got bailed out with an Antawn Jamison lane violation and got to retake the second, making it that time. That tied the game and set up Stevenson's winner.
I never like to blame one guy for missing shots and costing us a game, and this time is no different. But man, as a team we've gotta do better than that from the line. As horrible as we played, we still could have won just by knocking down the easy ones. - Peterson was about the only guy that I can say played a nice overall game tonight. He started off hot and finished with 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting, along with 7 boards. I'm not sure why Byron Scott decided to bench him for 15 minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters. Mike James and Jannero Pargo weren't doing anything special out there.
- Our final offense was baffling, too. We're down one, with 0:14 left and coming out of a timeout. Surely we burn some clock with Chris Paul out high then go for the last shot, right?
Instead, the plan seemed to be to give ourselves a couple of chances at it by going early. Chris drove, got crowded, and barely found Hilton to setup those free throws. Meanwhile, Peja, who has proven to be somewhat of a heroic genius in these late game situations, was stuck in the corner with nothing resembling a pick over there to free him up.
Decoy? Stupidity? You decide. - I thought West played a decent game. Our help defense was actually pretty tight in the first half, and he was a big reason why. The Wiz got most of their points in the early quarters by draining jumpers; they didn't get anything much inside until later.
- West did of course see the double teams again. Plenty of them. I've begun to wonder if the other guys are communicating well enough out there, telling West that the doubles are coming. He always seems to get caught off guard, and has to scramble to pick up his dribble and find an open teammate.
- One more thing about D-Weezy: I really wish he'd stop hesitating on his jumper. I thought he'd beat that habit back in January, but it's crept back into his game.
- Wiz rookie Nick Young got some burn tonight. You may remember him as the kid a lot of folks said we should have selected ahead of Julian Wright in the draft last year. Young had 8 points in 14 minutes, 3-of-5 shooting. He also played some real pesky defense on CP when they matched up for a stretch in the second quarter. Pretty impressive.
Definitely can't call that Hornets draft decision a mistake this soon, but Nick would probably be helping us a lot more than Julian right now. Then again, Byron might have Nick buried on the bench, too. - Chris had some nice numbers: 22 points, 10-of-14 from the field, 8 assists and 2 steals. He did have four turnovers though, and he seemed to be fumbling the rock a lot more than usual out there. This was also a game where we really needed him to just grab it by the balls and take that shit over. It's a lot to ask, sure, but that's what being a franchise guy is all about. Plus, he's done it numerous times before.
- We had 16 turnovers total tonight, which Washington converted into 26 points. You know, it seemed as if we managed to mess up in every facet of the game during one stretch or another. We'd go a few minutes where we were allergic to rebounds, then some where we couldn't pass the ball, and after that we'd forget how to play defense for a while. Often times we'd do several things really bad all at once. You know, just to see how that would work out.
- Bonzi Wells started real well with a nasty baseline dunk over some poor Wizard. It was all downhill after that.
- The halftime show was the Jesuit High School Jazz Band. Not bad, but why weren't they on stilts?
- Peja had a miserable game. He seemed frustrated early because he wasn't getting many touches, but as the game went on he got some wide open looks and just couldn't connect. He did hit a massive triple to put us up three with just over a minute left, which is why I believe we should have been looking for him again at the death. Whatever. He finished the night with 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
- Tyson, Tyson, Tyson. I don't know, man. 16 fouls in three games? I'll agree that the refs were pretty woeful out there tonight (on both ends) and you got unlucky with a few calls, but there's no denying that you've been dragging since the break. I thought the All-Star snub would light a fire under you, but I've yet to see even a spark.
- The attendance was down a little tonight, as you'd expect. Monday night, lowly opponent. 11,289 there to see the misery.
- Play of the night: Pargo's halfcourt heave to beat the third quarter buzzer. That put us up six, and helped get folks back to their happy faces for a while. Inflatable Hugos then took to the court and danced funky to the usual tunes as David West bopped along on the sideline.
- There was talk in the comments after the last two games about too much one-on-one in the Hornets offense. I don't think it was as bad tonight, but we were disgustingly stagnant. I don't think I saw a screen or a cut from the weak side all game. Much of our offense seemed to rely on the pick and roll, which unfortunately only includes 40% of the team.
Oh well. The good news is that both Dallas and San Antonio won tonight, and our next two games are against Phoenix and Utah. Methinks I feel all warm and tingly inside. Oh no wait. That's just me about to throw up in my mouth.

the shooting was awfull tonight. peja couldnt hit anything, paul was good but nowhere near great, David west was below average and struggled down the strecth, Tyson Chandler was downright awful, Bonzi sucked and so did Pargo. James was decent and Peterson was good. FT shooting was the reason we lost the game. Tyson needs to regain his cool and stop getting so frustrated after foul calls. The defense is not as good as it used to be. I was really pissed off during our last 3 game losing streak but now i am just speechless, im not pissed off i am just dissapointed. The big 3(TC,CP and DX) have got to get back on their games and take control of this team.

thsi team seems to always choke down the strecth. I mean a week ago we were coming off a huge win over dallas and now we are talking about falling out of the playoff picture. I mean I dont want to think about it but if we dont make the playoffs this year, better yet if we dont get homecourt this year than as much as i hate to say it Byron is probably gonna get fired and hornets are probably gonna look to move either David West or Tyson Chandler.

Why did the Hornets attempt to use James to guard Stevenson in the 4th? Stevenson was simply overpowering him, and getting to the rim or the line. By the time Peterson came in it was too late, Stevenson already had gotten into a groove.Steveson had about 15 points in the fourth and 10 of those came while James was attempting to guard him. I'm all for integrating the new guys, but Scott has to recognize was is happening on the floor. Also what happened to the offense in the fourth?

Let's not get carried away. This team has been great down the stretch this season. Before last night, we'd won the last six games decided by three points or less. And if we somehow failed to make the Playoffs this season, Byron might be fired, but no way we'd trade West or Tyson. I agree about James on Stevenson. MJ was getting burned. Physically, Mo-Pete was much better suited to guard him.

our defense has been fucked as of late...it may sound like a bad idea, but id like to see cp be the 1st option on offense in the 3rd. tyson needs to get the sand outta his vagina, become the windex addict he used to be. yea our psyche is kinda fucked right now. i think a quality win over a good opponent should help free us of this funk.

And happily, we have Pheonix coming to town. If any team will get us out of our funk, it'll be them. Then, of course, we get to face the despised Jazz. Bleh.

Listen, here's the angry bottom line: NOBODY KNOWS THIS TEAM. And before I get angry responses, I mean America at large, not Hornets fans/blogers/posters. Before the All-Star break, despite creeping into the Western lead, no one would consider us a contender. As if our 40 game record didn't speak for itself. And we still don't get respect in this regard. I'm sorry, the best 8 records in each conference make the playoffs. Period. They said we we were a team with only one legit All-Star. We had two, and two participants in the 3 skills competition every team is eligible for (not every city has a WNBA team). How many teams could say that? They said Tyson wasn't good enough, and the man is only averaging 12 and 12, while we've seen him torch guys like Camby, Kaman, and Jefferson, guys above or near him in rebounding. Pretty good stuff. They like to say CP is good, but it wasn't until the All-Star game that they acknowledged generally that his outplaying of Nash, Kidd, Parker, and Iverson all year hasn't been a lucky streak. Had they even watched him when he's not on national television? Isn't that some people's jobs? Then the refrain kept being the bench. Listen, these guys were mostly just reiterating Byron's own words. Seriously? Can they not tell the difference between real complaints and a coach trying to light a fire under his team? Did members of our bench go cold at times? Sure. Is that probably why they are bench players in the first place? Yes. Even with the best record in the west, they kept saying it. I think I only heard one guy say on TV that, um, with the best record, how much improvement do you need? And then it became the thing to say that this flaw had been addressed by the recent trade, after which, by the way, we're 0-3. Any comments pundits? And now it's the same quickly becoming tired refrain, Hornets fade down the stretch. Um, did these guys miss the stat that our starters missed 162 games last year? And that's only starters! Bobby missed like 20 himself. Of course we faded, we faded all season! And we still almost made the playoffs. And how many of these guys were even on the team 3 or 4 years ago? So for all those people who say the Hornets always fade this time of year, you're morons. This is a completely different team, with a different level of skill and experience. Byron has led a team to 2 separate Finals appearances. He has the team he wants. They're healthy. Look for them to go deep in May.

Chandler and the poor shoting is the reason we lost. Chandler has been awfull since the last 3 games treak. He is not even rebounding the ball that werll anymore. Byron needs to sit down with him and tell him to keep his cool and step it up.

i love how mo pete didn't play for 15 straight minutes and then had to come in with 4 minutes left. sure he was hustling for a few tip ins and doing his best, but when he missed those two free throws, was anyone surprised? its called being cold! why let mike james and bonzi play most of the minutes down the stretch while not being productive when you have a guy who was the best player in the first half sit on his ***, while tyson gets tecnicals, peja gets not touches or isn't having a good night and when West is turning it over a lot? seriously Byron? don't play him in the last 2 minutes if you aren't going to play him in most of the third and the fourth anyway. your asking for trouble!

I refuse to blame this loss on one person, or one facet of the game. I was also among those who didn't consider us a champioship contender THIS year. I still see us finishing the year at or around 51-31, but is that good enough to make the playoffs. That still has yet to be seen. Last night was the worst collective lack of effort, especially on the offensive end, since the Minnesota game back in November. This team does not have a 4-game losing streak all season, so they had better circle the wagons. As a dedicated fan of the Hornets, I have but 2 wishes. One, I wish the New Orleans fans don't turn their backs on a team thats still 19 games OVER .500, and my other wish is for the Hornets to prove to me they didn't peak in January.

um breaking new: YAO Ming is out for the rest of the 2007-2008 season with a stress fracture in his left foot! meaning, the nuggets have life, and now we only have to worry about the mavs and spurs in our division, along with the suns (3-0 against them), the lakers and utah as the only elite teams left. really the mavs and the spurs are our real competition to see who gets the division title and home court. this sucks for yao and his team, but we know they can't continue they way the've been playing this month for the rest of the season. they will have to depend on tracy, who is another injury prone player who's been saying he's not as good as he once was to carry the load! ouch! no more inside presence, so ppl can close out on their shooters, who aren't great drivers besides tracy. no inside presence, will make it hard to have great offense, plus the west is tougher this year. last year, the rockets had 50 wins despite losing yao for a long time, but again, 50 wins won't get you a playoff spot for sure this year...and they ain't getting homecourt without winning the division..and i can't see us, dallas or the spurs letting them win that! tracy won't win a playoff round this year again! i really admire his efforts to help the Darfur region btw. it keeps him humble and makes him realize how trivial the nba is. but i still want him to one day get past the first round. he's a great player.

That first wish is the one I'm the most worried about. Man, I could deal with the losing streak better if the showing hadn't been so dismal last night. :-( It's like the sellout crowd came to the Rockets game, and went, "Yep. What a bunch of losers. WE WERE RIGHT." And then didn't buy tickets. I know it was Monday. But we have had GREAT games since before the All Star break. One of the best attendance moments was a Monday. I'm disappointed.

Yeah, you can't really blame last night on any one player or coach. There were so many mistakes. By the by, at some point in the third, ticktock6 and I, like lots of you ,were wondering why Mo wasn't in the game, but he wasn't on the bench, so presumably it was an injury. The paper said his back again, but I don't remember him playing with a sleeve on his calf before last night. Is that just me? And no, last night, based on the way they played, they did not deserve to win. But we all know that plenty of teams that don't deserve to win do. A team as beat up as the Wiz don't deserve to win that game. Ever. But they did. We as fans, like the players, just need to move on. I'm certainly not giving up on the Bees, and I am fairly confident that the Suns and Jazz will be on the bad end of their wrath come Wednesday and Friday. See you all at the Buzzfest!

@ticktock6: I'm disappointed with the attendance last night, too, but I believe that previous Monday game you're talking about was against the Nuggets. Folks will turn up to see Iverson and Carmelo, but not so much Jamison and Stevenson. I think we'll sellout Wednesday and at least get close on Friday. I just hope the Hornets put on a good show. @sparks: I can't believe that about Houston. Finally they had everything clicking and then the Great Wall falls. Sucks for them; great for us. Finally something to make the West a little weaker instead of stronger.

Mike W's pep talk actually helped a bit, and I have decided to come in from the ledge. I also saw in Marty Burns' SI.com that PJ Brown is looking to get back in play and his agent has been fielding offers. PJ would add instant toughness and character, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

I'd love to see PJ back with the Hornets. He'd be a great addition. Hopefully he's looking to stay close to home though, and doesn't go after the biggest paycheck. I doubt money will be his biggest motivation, though.

steve i saw that too. i would be great if he could join. he doesn't hesistate on jumpers like d west does. maybe he can teach some of the bigs to not foul out and to keep their cool and to remember blockins hots and defense isn't overrated. @ Mike W - were you at the game? how did you notice morris wasn't on the bench? it would make so much more sense if we bryon didn't have a choice about Mo, because he was in the trainers room getting treatment. it makes him getting up high for rebounds more appreciated knowings he's really hurting. and yeah, thats not the first time he's wore a sleeve on his calf. i've seen it for a few games now. its not that pretty looking of a garment huh?

if we beat the suns and the jazz than we are heading into a nice little strecth where we can reel off a bucnh more wins and reclaim the first spot. If we go 1on 1 than we are in an ok but not a great position to make a run for homecourt. If we go 0-2 we are likely 7-8th seed we are on a 5 game losing streak our confidence is broken, everyone questions why bobby jackson was traded, turmi starts. These next 2 games are gonna be huge, we need to come away with both!

Yes Anonymous Dude, ticktock6 and I were at the game. Actually she pointed out that Mo wasn't on the bench, after wondering why he wasn't playing. So we can only hope it's just a little stiffness, and nothing major.

I'd like to know what happened to Tyson. Is he still pouting about not getting on the All Star team? All thru the game I kept thinking about the mature Tyson we saw last year...the one who thought getting to the top of the rebounder list was really a goal. Now he's getting technical fouls for acting like a child! Bring back the man...send back the boy!!!

As much as I Love Tyson, he needs to shut the fuck up during the game & grab some boards. All he does is complain now & not get back on defense in transition. It's pissing me off so much. And CP3 is doing a little pouting to the refs himself but not nearly as much as tyson. Same thing to David, Welcome to Playoff basketball kid. Shut up and play.

both chris and tyson have the same amount of technicals, stefan, so they both are acting like childs equally. wonder why bryon critcizes our bench, but not the star players who hurt us when they complain and let the other team get an extra free throw or when they yell so much at the ref, they don't have time to get back on defense. they have 8 each. thats near the top of the league!
