If you get the D&D reference in the title, you're cool. Really. Ignore what people have been saying about you for years.
Tonight the Wizards come to town. They have just suffered through a 2-8 stretch, stand 3 games below .500 and still hold the 6th seed in the East.
Your screwed up comparison of the day: The Hornets are 20 games over .500 and are fighting to keep the 5th seed in the West.
In fact, if you take the East 4th seed, Cleveland, and put it in the West, they are a 10th seed. The East 3rd seed, Orlando, would be fighting for their lives, barely holding on to the 8th spot. And these teams even get to play other crappy East teams 52 out of 82 games a year. I think that answers why East-leading Boston and Detroit only have 12 and 15 losses respectively.
Matchup: Wizards(26-29) @ Hornets(37-17)
Off Efficiency: Hornets 107.6(9th), Wizards 105.0(12th)
Def Efficiency: Hornets 101.8(6th), Wizards 105.7(22nd)
Wizzy Blogger: Bullets Forever
On to tonights game. The reason for the Wizards sudden slide is the injury to Caron Butler. The man is known as "Tough Juice", which for some reason gives me disgusting mental images of him chewing tobacco and launching black wads of saliva at a spitoon. Anyways, he's been out, and he'll sit out tonight. His tough defense and determined offense were vital to this team, which was already missing Arenas and his crazy offense.
The Hornets aren't missing anyone, and they've managed to have one more practice with Bonzi Wells and Mike James. Yay, I'm sure they know everything there is to know about their teammates now. I expect big things from them.
There aren't many teams on our upcoming schedule that we can take advantage of, but these wounded Wizards are one of em. We need to smack 'em.
Positional Analysis
PG: Antonio Daniels vs Chris Paul
Advantage: Hornets
Antonio has always been an underrated player. He's tough, his defense is great, but he's usually ignored because his offense is efficient but not prolific. Paul is tough, his defense is good, but he's an offensive monster. Antonio will have his hands full keeping him out of the paint - especially with big men who are less-than-interested in stepping out on the pick and roll.
SG: DeShawn Stevenson vs. Morris Peterson
Advantage: Wizards
DeShawn is shooting poorly this year, but his defense is solid, his three point shot decent, and his turnovers low. Morris Peterson would usually match that, and I'm a big defender of his, but he's not playing up to snuff. C'mon, Mo.
SF: Antawn Jamison vs. Peja Stojakovic
Advantage: Even
I'm slotting Antawn here - but he and Blatche are practically interchangeable at the forward spots. Antawn is more of a long-range bomber, so the wing position goes to him. Antawn and Peja have pretty similar scoring skills - with Peja having better range. Antawn crashes the glass a lot harder. Even though Antawn gets more shots from his team and therefore has a higher scoring average, I feel this position is about even.
PF: Andray Blatche vs. David West
Advantage: Hornets
Blatche is a nice piece for the wizards. He's a versatile forward capable of rebounding and scoring a little. He's also a great help shot blocker. He's not, however, capable of much more right now. David West will do his thing, and I doubt Blatche will be able to do much about it.
C: Brendan Haywood vs. Tyson Chandler
Advantage: Hornets
Haywood is having one of his best years ever. And he still does much less than Tyson does. He's also not strong like bull, so Tyson should be able fend him off, get in position and clean the glass.
Bench
Advantage: Hornets
Even without knowing how Bonzi or Mike James are going to do, the Wizards bench is sorely depleted due to the injuries to Etan Thomas, Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler. Normally, this would be a strength for the Wizards, but it's not right now.
Hornets win 106-98.

Honestly, I'll be disappointed if we don't crucify these guys and win big. Tough games against Phoenix and Utah coming up, we really can't afford to lose to a team like the Wizards.

A lapse in concentration, need that we do not! I thought I'd throw that tought out there in Yoda Voice. Mo Pete just needs to relax and play his game, he's been pressing alot lately, although he did shoot the 3 well in San Antonio. I'm actually hoping for a big game from our bench tonight with the Wizz being thin in their lineup. Go Hornets!

mo pete needs to just take open shots. don't feel the need to take a shot if its not there. just don't even ask for the ball. relax and let someone else mess up. thank god he's not a turnover machine. just take open shots, and if byron pressures you to do more, don't. it just takes away from the team. frankly, i'm sick of all the one on one, and with west and now bonzi and mike, it looks like i'll be seeing a lot more. if that continues, we are going to fall miserably in the second half.

Quick question, Ryan. I know that Brent Barry got released by the Sonics right after the Kurt Thomas trade. What is the likelyhood that he dons the "Fleur De Bee"? Also, how do you think he'll fit?I'm not super-serious about it, but it's tempting to think about. Iheard that Boston is looking to get him as well.

The Hornets have expressed interest in Brent Barry in the past(offering JR Smith for him a couple years ago) so I wouldn't be surprised if they looked into it again this year. The only issue is that because of that flurry of trades in the offseason, wherethe Hornetstook on the contracts of players like Bernard Robinson and Mile Ilic, and were paid a little retainer by the teams to take them off their hands and help them get under the Luxury Tax line, we are much closer tothatline than we normally would be. There's about 5 million of dead salary on our payroll. We can still sign Barry, but then we wouldn't be able to sign anyone else. If the Hornets want to bring back Birdman or another big like PJ, then Barry is probably not going to be considered.

Yeah, we need this win big time. I also wanted to echo the complaint above about one-on-one ball. While it's nice to have guys that can do that (Bonzi), the Hornets have played their best when they have moved around the ball a lot. There's a reason that plenty of guys who can dominate one-on-one in high school and college fail in the pros--it doesn't work. Ask Kobe and Lebron about that. Neither will win a championship without playing team ball (which Kobe did during his 3 with Shaq). This is especially true when these types of teams get lazy and sit around on the perimeter, then allowing 5 guys to collapse on their superstar. There's a reason CP brought back the West in the All-Star game, and it wasn't because he thought he could score 20 in the quarter. He got the team involved. As a contrast to the limitations of one-on-one ball, look at what Kobe did to us a month or two ago. He just kept driving it in, kicking it back, and his team killed us. We kept collapsing on him, and the team got involved. Then, any time we went to them, Kobe finished it himself. Any good team needs to mix it up, run some, establish the half-court, bang it down low, make mid-range jumpers, nail the 3s and get good ball movement. If a team relies upon one strategy, they can be gamed and beaten. Look at Dallas last year in the playoffs. If we get back to playing like that, we'll be golden. And I expect that to start tonight.

It can become a catch 22 with the ball movement. Guys aren't hitting the spot up jumpers, so we try going one-on-one instead to get a much needed bucket, and that's rarely the solution. Sure; drive the basketball and try get some points in the paint, but that doesn't mean you stop passing. As for Bobby last night, he had something like 11 points in the fourth quarter, but there was no game-winner. Rocks beat the Bulls by 13.

I don't like the pressure on Mo-Pete. I feel like this will make him even worse. I don't think he was that bad before his back spasm to criticize him like scott did. Keep ya head up mo!

While I have maintained a purely platonic love/hate relationship with Pargo over the last two years(Love him when he is hitting/hate him when he's bricking) I hope the team recognizes that he is playing on borrowed time and emphasizes Mike James as the primary back up for CP3. Like it or not- James is going to be here the next three years, so we have to get as much bang for our Hornet buck as we can. Two years ago he was a 20ppg starter for the Raptors- so the potential is definitely there. We barely got Pargo back this year on a two year-player option deal and his stock has only risen. He's going to want more than this year's 2 mil- and there won't be enough cap room left to re-sign both him and Bonzi. If we are going to turn around James' career- HE has to be the back up floor general.I know Coach frequently checks this site looking for my advice, so here's what you need to do- go back to your hockey styleend of the quarterquarter line change with James and Wells, Armstrong and Andersen- and play JuJu when a bigger line-up makes sense- Pargo when we go small and quick. When you shift back to the starters-especially in the second half- leave whoever has the hot hand on the floor for extended minutes (Bonzi- I'm talking about you here). Jesus, do I have to do everything around here?
