Damn that winning streak. The Hornets spent the first half of the year crushing opponents on the defensive end, staying in the top four all the way to February. Then, we had that wonderful nine-game run where not only was our defense solid, but our offense was clicking so smoothly that we were outscoring everyone. Since then we've been struggling a bit, trading winning and losing streaks.
During this stretch, our offense has slowed, bogging down into too many two man games, and too many forced post ups. That said, our offense isn't the problem. The one-on-one ball isn't pretty to look at, but our offensive efficiency is actually the same as it was earlier in the season.(It's 9th now, and has fluctuated between 7 and 13)
It's our defense that has been killing us. After climbing to 2nd overall on January 30th, our defense has fallen apart and pulled our rating all the way down to 7th. It's easy to blame Chandler and West - they do have about three plays a game where a guard penetrates to our basket and neither of them leave their man to challenge his shot, but I've been watching them specifically the past few games, and they are still a solid, if not spectacular, defensive pair. Their rotations are decent, and Tyson is especially good at stepping out on the pick and roll and recovering.(West is so-so) The issue is our perimeter, where defense starts. Too often, our defense is relying on Paul, Pargo and now Mike James in the backcourt. All are fast and can stay in front of their man, but none is good at dealing with high screens or wing players that can muscle them a little. They just don't have the size. Confronted with a pick, they invariably go under or trail their guy around it, unable to fight through and stay in front of their man. Having a pair of them out there at the same time, unless Pargo is smokin', is usually a net loss. That's why losing Bobby Jackson hurts a little. Bobby may have had trouble staying in front of a fast guy when isolated against him, but he could fight through picks like a linebacker, and was giving ground to no one. He could take the tough assignment and let Paul freelance and disrupt, his particular specialty.
This is why Morris Peterson, Rasual Butler, and maybe Bonzi Wells will be so important to us down the stretch. We need at least two guys of those guys to start contributing more consistently on offense so they can stay on the floor and defend. Morris and Rasual are actually two of our best defenders, but when they are cold, Byron has a hard time keeping them on the floor for long stretches. So let's hope that Morris gets his body in order, Butler finds his shot, and/or Bonzi gets his offense and defense flowing on the floor.
Otherwise, this will be a looong March.
Matchup: Suns(39-18) @ Hornets(37-18)
Off Efficiency: Suns 110.3(1st), Hornets 107.5(9th)
Def Efficiency: Hornets 101.9(7th), Suns 103.9(15th)
Sunny Blogger: Bright Side of the Sun
Phoenix comes to New Orleans tonight to take on the Hornets, lugging with them a massive new toy named Shaquille O'Neal. Over the last 10, the Suns have gone 6-4, and so far O'Neal has produced what I expected of him: Jack diddly on offense, some rebounding because no one else on the Suns likes to stay near the basket to rebound, and slow-footed defense. I'm sure his scoring will rise some, but I doubt it will reach Marion levels. I still think it was lame to trade for Shaq.
The Hornets are sporting their own new players - who so far haven't been the bench-revitalizing pick-ups we had hoped for. The second unit offense is a little better with Mike James, but the defense has suffered correspondingly with him on the floor. Bonzi has been a wash. The Hornets have gone only 5-5 in their last 10, their worst set of ten games all year. Hopefully it won't continue.
Both teams appear to be at full strength, though Morris Peterson is still struggling with that bad back.
Positional Analysis
PG: Steve Nash vs Chris Paul
Advantage: Hornets
I like Paul's entire game better than Nash's(Read: Defense). Both are fantastic players, and I enjoy watching them go at one another. Maybe Nash will be able to keep his turnovers down this game, and only lose it to Paul 8 times.
SG: Raja Bell vs. Morris Peterson
Advantage: Even
Both play tough defense, aren't shooting particularly well this year, but can hit the corner three if left open. If Morris is bothered by his back much this game, this could swing in the Suns favor.
SF: Grant Hill vs. Peja Stojakovic
Advantage: Even
Hill is the great all-around player that every team should have. He can pass, defend, shoot, drive, handle. Peja is a specialist scorer - but he's one of the best specialists around. These two guys approach the game very differently, but both fill a vital role and will battle in this game.
PF: Amare Stoudamire vs. David "I ain't Fluffy" West
Advantage: Suns
I'm not a fan of Amare. It's not his talent, or skills, or anything like that - I just don't get any intensity from him at all. I have a feeling that had he the intense focus of Nash, he'd be one of the best players ever. I just don't see it. Fluffy has got intensity and a lot of skill, he just doesn't have the raw physical tools to match with Amare defensively. Couple that with Amare's lack of defense, and expect these two guys to be scoring at will on one another.
C: Shaquille O'Neal vs. Tyson Chandler
Advantage: Hornets
Blasphemy? No. Shaq plays the same role for the suns that Tyson plays for the Hornets. Except Tyson can still run, jump, and step out on the perimeter and defend a little. Shaq can take up space in the paint and get some easy putback buckets. I'd rather have Tyson.
Bench
Advantage: Suns
Barbosa and Diaw are a great one-two punch to pull off a bench. The Hornets are still trying to develop a consistent punch from anyone. Pargo is their closest thing to a threat right now.
Hornets win 112-108.

Great breakdown Ryan. Not much to add. But, I think that as all new players adjust to their teams, it is a struggle to learn all the correct defensive assignments and get that instinct for how each guy will react in a given situation. In this case, I think this factor goes in Hornets' favor because our new players are bench players. The Suns have a major starter inserted (Shaq) who has to know how react, and who, incidentally, is replacing the Suns' defensive go-to stopper (Marion). Let's hope this and everything else means a victory for the Bees.

Great game analysis and great blog. I love this kind of real basketball talk as opposed to the "Kobe Rocks - You suck" insight that passes for discussion in LA. I really don't disagree with any of your points. I didn't like the trade and nothing has come close to changing my mind. Ilike TC over the Big If for exactly the reasons stated. And as much as it pains me to say it, CP3 is the best regular season PGin the game b/c of hisamazing defensive skills. I look forward to seeing how he performs in the playoffs under that kind of pressure. He's young and its a new thing for him. Don't expect too much his first time in. As for Amare, I think you may have missed some of his intensity just based on when you see him play. He certainly started the season flat but ever since getting beat by LA on Christmas Day he has been on a tear and as well documented is the Sun that has loved the trade the most (except maybe DJ Strawberry who moved up a notch in the already thin rotation). Did you see him against KG? Amare can bring it and has been lately and I fully expect he will tonight. Nash played 40 minutes last nightagainst the Grizz which is high for him this year while Amare and Shaq had low minutes. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Suns run the offense less through Nash and even have DJ (a great long defender) on the floor against CP3 more then normal. That's what I would do. Of course Coach D pretty much thinks Nash is the Second Coming of Pistol Pete so its not likely that he will ever go away from Steve even on a night like this when he should consider it. Good news for you: Diaw had a great night last night. The last time he had two of those in a row was 2005 (before his contract was extended).

Great post, Ryan. I love your point about the perimeter defense. Makes a lot of sense. A couple things to add in response to the post and the above comments... 1) I actually like Amare a lot. I saw his performance against KG and that shit was impressive. You could say he benefits a lot from playing with Nash, but the same could be said about West playing with CP. 2) If you want great Lakers analysis, try Forum Blue and Gold (forumblueandgold.com). 3) Bonzi sat out practice yesterday with a sore Achilles. He might be doubtful for tonight.

munciemugs, that's me, from Muncie IN.I ran into Bonzi's dad today and he told me that Bonzi went to bed one night thinking he would be traded to the Bulls and got up the next day to find out he was going to be a Hornet. I'm telling you Wells is very happy there in NewOrleans, rather than in the Windy City.......Bonzi doesn't think the Bulls are going anywhere, BUT THINKS the HORNETS have a strong team that can beat anyone.......I know Wells hasn't showed anything yet but Bonzi's dad, Gawen Deangelo Wells the first- Bonzi being the second, thinks that he will be a consistant contributer once he gets familiar with his new team. Do yal Hornets fans know how Bonzi got that nickname? Well Bonzi's mom craved bon-bons when she was carrying him.......so they called him Bonzi when he was born. I sure hope the Hornets get on the right track tonight and get a BIG W!!!

I had no idea that was even a nickname! Thanks for the info Usually when we pick up guys in the offseason I have time to do some digging and find some unusual facts and stuff about them, but during the season the schedule is hectic. That said, I hear from DJ Toney Blare that there's some crazy Mike James radio interview hidden somewhere on these internets.

Hey man i hope your right. I have been to many hornets games this year, and walking into the arena on monday I was telling My girlfriend we should wipe the floor with the wizards. After blowing our lead and missing 10 free throws...I knew if we would have won it would be a really sloppy win. But at the last second... Hopefully like you said we get back on track and take it to PHX. I think Shaq is done and really like he has shown wont be a factor. Good post...I was linked here by ESPN.com so I have fav'd our site keep up the good work!

However, West maintained it was far too early to evaluate the trade for Wells and James. "They haven't been a major part of what we've been doing. That has no bearing on the fact we've lost these three games," West said. "They haven't been on the floor in crucial situations. It's been the guys who've been here." they haven't fluffy? i guess i was imagining things last night in most of the third and fourth quarter. maybe he was too busy getting offensive fouls or countless turnovers to notice! lol, i'm mean! i'm still happy we got bonzi though.

No sparks, our comment form sucks. I'll get it fixed in a minute. @Chris: I'd expect a sellout for this one. Shaq alone will be a big draw around these parts. They were still advertising the $10 tix on the radio a half hour ago though. And in other news, PJ Brown is going to sign with the Celtics. Check the news section.

As a side note, both Marcus Vinicius and Adam Haluska have now been cut by Memphis and Houston, respectively. Don't know what our roster will look like in 30 days, but it might be interesting if they brought them back.

I thought PJ would have signed with us for sure if he was planning on coming back. w.e he would have been helpful but its not that big of a loss.

I doubt we'll see Vinicius or Haluska this season again. We'd have to sign them to new deals and salaries if we did, and I think the Hornets had no plans on playing them anyways so why pay for em. We may see one or the other next year in training camp, but that's about it. PJ is a nice glue guy and all, but his entire offensive game was an elbow jumper that was already starting to fail when he played for us two years ago. Defensively, he's still alright, but I'm not actually upset about him not coming in. Best of luck to the guy. Welcome to the site Ryan Ray - and Munciemug - I went to Ball State for a semester. Howsit goin in Indiana?

What a great WIN last night !!!! Iv'e been telling everyone that CPaul is the best point n the NBA!!! Move over Nash, you are now officially an OLD man , you were never a good defender but NOW WOW you are NOT in the same league as Cp3,,,, he can take you off the dribble any time you closely guard him and if you back off he will shoot over you 4 easy scores.....How about thode 15assists, and West is the most under rated player in the west. Go Hornets and GET the Jazz, the team with the second best point n the NBA!!!! It will b nice to finally b on national TV again.......It isgoing2 b tough and I hope we WIN!!!! Now I rate my top five NBA teams: 5 Pistons, 4 Boston, 3 Hornets, 2 Spurs and even though I HATE 2 say it numberunothe Lakers! Notice the Yao less Rockets, theMavs, and Suns are misssing from my top five. GO HORNETS!!!!!!
