As the season enters the stretch, the MVP race has boiled down to Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Chris Paul and Kevin Garnett. All are worthy, and I won't be upset over any of them winning the prize. I fully expect it to be LeBron or Kobe, but it's still pretty amazing that Paul, in his third year in the league, has already entered the discussion.
Anyways, I was poking at various stats while the Hornets were running around with 5 bench players for long stretches of the Knicks game and came up with a few interesting/amusing stats. As a result, I'm going to present three new awards: the Hornet's Most Vital Player if You Only Care About Shooting(MVPYOCAS), Most Consistent Player(MCP), and Most Perverse Player Who Inexplicably Plays Better in Losses(MPPWIPBIL).

Most Vital Player if You Only Care About Shooting(MVBPYOCAS)
This award goes to our very own Jannero Pargo, he of the energetic defense, over-dribbling and streaky shooting. In wins this season, Pargo is firing away at an impressive 47% clip from the field. In losses, he shoots an ice-cold-cover-your-eyes 30%. This, of course, confirms what we knew all along - if we have one player on the bench who can come in and score efficiently, we're hard to beat. As much as I love Pargo at times, he's too streaky to count on to do this.
Runner-up: Ryan Bowen.
Ryan Bowen actually has the biggest differential on the team - 54% in wins and 27% in losses, but since he doesn't even average 2 shots a game, it's a stretch to call his shooting percentage vital - or even call him a shooter.
Note: Stojakovic and Peterson both have a 9% difference in their shooting when comparing wins to losses. The team as a whole shoots 7% worse in losses, so this isn't that much of a variance.
Most Consistent Player(MCP)
The award of Most Consistent Player(MCP) goes to the player who's initials make up part of the award acronym: Chris Paul. The difference in his shooting between wins and losses is a mere .6%. 47.9% for Losses and 48.5% for wins. That little pithy statement announcers use - "He's going to get his" is entirely accurate in Paul's case. No team is going to take him off his game, even if they slow the rest of the team. LeBron is the same way - 49% in Wins and 48% in losses. Kobe, the so-called greatest player on earth,(this irritates me, can you tell?) can apparently be taken out of his game. He's at 49% in wins and 42% in losses.
Runner-Up: Rasual Butler
Butler is a close runner up in the consistency award. Unfortunately, he consistently sucks, shooting 34% in losses and 35% in wins. What the hell, man.
Most Perverse Player Who Inexplicably Plays Better In Losses(MPPWIPBIL)
Good ol' Melvin Ely has somehow managed to shoot 52% in losses, and only 41% in wins. I'm not sure what that tells us. Maybe that he's the only one on the team who responds well to adversity . . . or that his offense doesn't really matter. I'll leave it to you to decide.
Runner-Up: None
Ely stands alone.
It appears the Birdman will be joining the Hornets - as long as he is able to pass his physical and the other Health-related matters. I can't say I'm upset to add another big man. Hilton and Ely are WAY to inconsistent.

I'm excited Birdman has finally been reinstated. From all accounts he has kept in good shape, so it seems likely he will pass the physical. I loved him when he was here before and I can't wait to see him flying around the court in a Hornets' uniform again!

Statement from Jeff Bower regarding Chris Andersen this morning: "We were always more concerned with Chris Andersen the person rather than Chris Andersen the player and are pleased that he has taken the appropriate measures to get himself reinstated by the NBA. "We will now begin the process of getting him back on the court and back in a Hornets uniform as quickly as possible."

Regarding those awards, I don't think we'll see the NBA adopting them anytime soon (narrow-minded fools). Rasual Butler was horrible against the Knicks. 0-4 from the field, and all of those misses were of the flat, front-iron variety. I'm rooting for the guy, but his main role on this team is to come off the bench and shoot the ball well from distance, and he's done that very few times this season.

"Butler is a close runner up in the consistency award. Unfortunately, he consistently sucks" Simply brilliant and hilarious description; I think you need to copyright that before Bill Simmons steals that line to describe someone in his next article.

great stuff ryan. where does ryan get this stuff? link? i don't like calling kobe the best player on the world, and that stat kind of proves it. he ain't much of a leader and he of course can shoot you out of a game, no matter how talented he is. he's never be known for taking down a shot. i wonder if kg is also a guy who shoots the same in wins and losses. i'd be happy if kg, chris or lebron wins the mvp. there is a reason why kobe has never won the mvp award. cuz consistenly there was a player who did more for his team than him each year. scoring 50 points isn't going to help your team all the time. playing great defense like kg helps - getting tons of assists like nash and paul helps your team. using steroids like lebron helps your team - no way he is 23! no way! drug test that guy! i kid!

The Hornets have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow morning to announce the signing of Chris Andersen. I guess it's official then.

You know, now that the Cavs and Lakers are surging you have started to hear a lot of people amplify the MVP talks, and a lot of people are saying that records of their respective teams definitely matter. Funny how you didn't hear that mantra as much when CP led his team to the top of the West. Also, it's interesting that so many people say it's just Kobe and Lebron in the MVP race now, but so many say it's definitely one of the two and lay out their reasons why, only every other source says it's the other one, alternating their MVP choice. There's no doubt that Lebron is wickedly talented, but he's also putting up his numbers in the East. Look at how KG is dominant this year and struggled at the end of his tenure in Minny to be that kind of player. Not only are the players better in the West, but so are the coaches. There's a reason Kobe's shooting percentage dips in the 4th, it's because any five guys can stop any one. Soon the East teams will figure that out. Unfortunately, the MVP is rarely a young guy who's in his first year of MVP-caliber play. So CP probably won't get it. Has Lebron then earned it? Yes. But, if you ask me, I think it's kind of crazy that if you asked who the most talented player in the league has been any of the last five years and 80% of the people would say Kobe to say that he's had no MVPs during that time. I think it's safe to say it's his turn. But next year? CP all the way. But you know what, I'm going to keep chanting MVP at the home games, because you never know what will happen down the stretch. And CP's our guy.

Yay, Chris Andersen - I'll get a stat-pack together on him and post italong tomorrow's game preview. Sparks- the stats I quoted come from the Splits published by ESPN for all players. Here's a link to Chris Paul's: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/splits?playerId=2779 Mid-way down the list you'll see "In Losses" and "In Wins". Garnett shoots 53.7% in wins, and 52.8% in losses. So yes, he's consistent. Oddly enough with Garnett - he averages less points, less shotsand more rebounds and assists when his team wins. He shoots more when they lose. So when we face them at the end of the month, we should let him shoot. :)

um mike w - about lebron and kg and their stats in the east - they'd be averaging the same stats no matter what conference. kg didn't decline the last few years. in fact, he has worse numbers this year, except in field goal percentage. his managment really never had a single good player beside him other than cassell and sprewell, both past their prime. he was just stuck on bad team or average. just like lebron is now. both can score, rebound and do what they do best against any team. kg has talent this year. we will see if lebron will ever have it in cleveland. i think the reason why kobe's stats go down is, one he shoots a lot, and two he's a perimeter player. kg and lebron, even though both have good jump shots , live in the paint. the celtics are elite, it doesn't matter that they pay in the east, same with the pistons. each have great records against the west. its just that lebron's team is average at best. unless his team wins a lot, he doesn't deserve the mvp over guys on better teams. remember the pistons beat us, the suns, the spurs etc by a lot! they are elite. and we all know how the celtics embarrass teams. lets not underrate them when we play them.

I agree. I doubt that's David West. Anyways I'm glad the Birdman is back! & thank you for pointing out how Kobe shoots 7% less in losses than in wins. Just proves why CP3 or Lebron should be the MVP. Not Kobe.
