I can't be mad at the loss tonight. I'm pretty proud of the way the Hornets played. The Rockets are red hot right now, but we refused to just roll over and give them another win without a fight. We got down big a couple of times, but managed to rally back and make a game of it. "Passion, purpose and pride" was in full effect; Houston just happened to be better on the night.

Notes...
- Final score was 106-96. Linkage: recap | box score | standings
- Chris Paul was phenomenal. I noted earlier that we needed an MVP-type effort from him, and after a slow start he definitely came through for us. He finished with 37 points and 11 assists. Couldn't ask for much more out of him. He kept us within striking distance in the second half. Great game, kid.
- Tracy McGrady gets player of the night though. 41 points (17-27 FGs), 9 assists, 6 rebounds and a couple blocks. It was great to see we started doubling him midway through the second quarter, but then we pretty much deserted that tactic in the second half. It was tough, because he's smart enough to give the ball up and the Rockets as a team swing the ball so well that they end up with a bunch of open jumpers, which of course they were hitting tonight. I think we should have doubled McGrady more though. At least make him work harder. So many times tonight he caught the ball and had time to size up the defense and contemplate his move. Can't let him have that. Force him to put the ball on the floor or pass quickly.
- Peja was limited against the Rockets for the third time this season. Tonight he had 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting; The previous two against Houston he had 10 points total. Shane Battier just does a great job on him. Dude does not play help defense at all. He has his back to the ball a lot of the time on D, making sure he doesn't lose sight of Stojakovic. As a result, we really had a tough time getting the ball in Peja's hands. With Battier guarding him, the only open looks he got were on broken plays. Peja did heat up a little midway through the second quarter, nailing a pair of threes. No surprise that Battier was on the bench when that happened.
- When Peja is smothered like that, I'd like to see him and CP work more of a two man game. About five minutes left in the third quarter, Peja set a pick for Chris, Battier and Rafer Alston got caught and had to switch, leaving a couple of mismatches. Rafer ended up fouling Peja on the play. I think if we'd run that same trick a few more times, Peja would have had some easier catches, easier looks at the basket and might have ended up with 20+ points tonight.
- Another nice outing by Julian Wright. Byron got him in early, he hit his first three shots, and finished with 9 points. I continue to be impressed by his defense. For such a freak of an athlete, he's surprisingly clever about closing out on shooters. I expect him to lunge at the guy for a big-time block, but he stays on his feet and slows himself down as he gets out, minimizing the chance for his man to blow by him.
- Melvin Ely, you've become a black hole on offense. Seriously dude, try passing the ball back out of the post every once in a while. You're allowed to do that. Byron had Ely out there for for seven minutes spanning the first and second quarters tonight, but sat him the rest of the game after tiring of the selfishness (I don't know how else to say it), turnovers and bricked free throws.
- With Hilton Armstrong still locked in the doghouse and Chris Andersen paying his dues, that left Tyson Chandler playing heavy minutes at center. In 41 minutes, he had 15 points, 16 boards and a pair of blocks. A nice night's work.
That said, I can't figure out why Tyson has been shooting the ball so much lately. He's averaging 11.2 shots per game this month, compared to just 5.9 in February. I know West is out right now, but Tyson shouldn't be the guy getting the extra looks on offense. His hook shot is incredibly flat and maybe 30% accurate, and don't get me started on that fadeaway jumper that he tries in the lane. I'd much rather CP or Morris Peterson firing up more shots while West is out. - Interesting seeing Jannero Pargo vs. Bobby Jackson out there tonight. Pargo shot horribly and finished with 7 points, but he's earned the green light. He's been having significantly more good nights than bad this season, so I'll live with 3-of-13 from the field every now and then.
- Get your ass healthy, Bonzi.
- Mo-Pete got some shots to drop early and finished with 12 points. He had the McGrady assignment through most of the first three quarters. He didn't do a bad job either, but again I would have liked to see T-Mac rushed more. Byron opted to sit Mo for the fourth quarter though, going with the rookie instead. Not a bad idea, but it didn't make much of a difference in the end.
- Play of the game: Just under two minutes to go in the game, down ten after McGrady put home a rugged reverse. Chris gets down the floor, blows by his man, draws a crowd, and flips it over his shoulder for Tyson to catch in mid-air. Incredible alley-oop.
- The Hornets and Rockets combined to hit 18 three-pointers in the first half, which is apparently an NBA record. The Rockets ended up shooting 34 threes on the night, making 14 of them. The Hornets were 11-of-21 from deep.
- Alston and Chandler got into a verbal exchange after the final buzzer. I hate Rafer Alston. He's not invited to my next slumber party. All the Honeybees are.
That loss actually knocks us down to fifth in the Western Conference. The Rockets now have the same record as the Hornets, but own the tie-breaker 2-1. We'll have a chance to even it up on March 19th in New Orleans.
After a bunch of other games tonight, there are now seven teams in the West with at least 40 wins, Golden State (39) and Denver (37) ain't far behind. Crazy days. Philly and Atlanta are the last two seeds in the East right now and neither of them have thirty wins. Bums.
Moving on, and I'm glad we get a break until Wednesday. It's been pretty much non-stop since the All-Star break, no more than a day between games. Unfortunately, our next three opponents are the Spurs, Lakers and Pistons. Two wins out of those three would be great like free cake.

Scott said both Bonzi and West should be ready on Wednesday. In other news, I'd like to punch the f*ck out of Rafer Alston. What the hell is that guys problem? Why does he feel he always has to get into it with a Hornet? ALWAYS! He's got little big man syndrome. Punk bitch. Watch on 3/19 he's going to try to get into it again with a Hornet. Watch. Just watch.

But now that I think about it, he usually talks shit when he's in Houston. He may not get into it with anybody on 3/19. Last season it was him and Desmond Mason getting ejected from a game. This dude obviously has a problem with the Hornets.

Well, I like the effort that they have showed. Rockets are just as hot as a real rocket. About Alston, I think its just his nature getting to peoples faces an talking verbally... http://basketballnonsense.blogspot.com/2008/03/houston-is-still-up-and-kicking.html

rafer is a headcase. all toronto raptor fans are glad he is longer with their team. i disagree with having pargo and julian out there in the fourth quarter to defend tmac. at one point pargo got caught and had to defend tracy and tracy just sood there, 5 inches taller and made an easy jumpshot. he had no hand in his face cuz pargo is just that short! lol! it was hilarious to watch them stand beside each other. david and goliath. are we the golden state warriors? no wonder our defense stinks lately! small ball never works on the defensive side of the ball. we seem to never rotate quickly enough on their shooters. leaving them open for wide open threes. and having a rookie like julian in the fourth quarter who has never played against tracy was stupid imo.

JuJu guarded Tmac better than anybody else on our team suprisingly. I wonder how Bonzi would have done trying to guard him. And is anybody else afraid we might not even get into the playoffs considering our injuries and difficult schedule??

There are many reasons we lost this game and here they are. a)Houston was just on fire. T-Mac was hitting everything, Rafer, Novak and Head were on fire from deep and even guys like hays and Scola were getting everything to go down. Plus they got many lucky bounces there way. how many time during the second half did they get some loose ball off a miss to go straight into Mutombos hands right under the basket. b)We were going 4-5 most of the game on offense. Bowen is great in limited stretches but he just kills our O when he is in for long periods of times. c)bad coaching by Byron Scott. I will hold off on the double T-mac argument for a little bit. But I just want to get to his questinable timeouts. I mean in that second quarter there was a strecth where they went on a 15-0 run with the Hornets not calling one timout, and it was not one of those long drawn out tuns they were just getting the ball and tossing up 3s and everything was going in, B-Scott needed to call a timeout eralier to break the momentum. d)Tyson Chandler. Say what you want but he is one of the main reasons we lost. Im not so mad at his inability to make a damn hook shot because atleast he getting some nice looks and eventually they will go down but i was really dissapointed in both his defense and his rebounding. he gave up on way to many rebounds. Whenver he felt he got pushed a little he would just wave his hands and yell and just let someone else grab a board. He missed atleast 3 dunks because he let Hayes get a peices of the ball. how the hell can a 7-1 guy not finish dunks over a 6-6 huy. Once Tyson feels he gets foulded he gives up on the ball he doesnt make an attmpet to carry the play through. e)Tyson Chandler again. After the first game of the year where he had like 4 blocks and layed out like 3 people against sacramento he is playing like a pussy ever since. He never attampets to block a damn shot and is satisfied just watching other people dunk it or lay it up. Seriously he is 7-1 he needs to atleast try and block a shot, he never trys. f)Melvin Ely-if I ever see him in the game again I will personally drive myself down to B-scotts house and bitch slap him. Hilton was playing a million times better. Melvin is a black hole and turnover machine. He is also slow on defense a crappy rebounder and cant block shots. hilton atleast is a good shot blocker and is willing to pass the ball and he is a much better rebounder. hell even Birdamn is a better option right now. We need to cut our losses and waive ely. g)Double teaming T-Mac. Many of you will say we should have double teamed him more but i disagree. Personally I dont belive in double teaming anyone unless the players around him arent great 3 point shooters. Adelman surrounder T-Mac with many 3 point shooters all game and the Rockets buried us. You can balme the defensive rotations but when you double teama wing player out on the top roatations become a lot harder than when you double team aplayer in the post. Let T-Mac get his 40-50 points but atleast try and not let everyone else nail you with 11 3 pointers. h)Please come back mr.west. I really loved the way were were playing team ball the last 3 games but against houston we went back to our 1-1 bullshit. peja was trying to post up all game. Tyson was going 1-1 and so was Jannero. CP was the only one who showed up yesterday.

anyone else sick and tired of tysons unwillingness to block a shot or atleast attmpt to block a shot. I am really dissapointed in Tyson, the tyson from last year needs to comeback or we are doomed, our interior D looks crappy again.

Tough loss guys. However, goot say you have a keeper in Julian. And CP is a top 3 player in the nba right now. Whats with the interior D though. I mean I thought Tyson Chandler was an enforecer down low. But he looked very soft and very timid there. No wonder why his shot blocking numbers are so low. I have to say I was not at all impressed with Tyson and seems that he is turning back into the Tyson for the Chicago days.

i was so happy. i thought i found a rocket's bashing party, but i'm sorry, folks. as much as i hate rafer, he was only sticking up for his teammate. the game before last dwest and tyson had extra hard "fouls" on yao ming. rafer didn't like it, and said something. this all rose from that night. post game, cp3 and tyson distastefully bashed rafer with the media, while rafer took the high road and said "i'm not gonna talk about them, but they don't like me and i don't like them, and we'll leave it at that" (paraphrased). now that kinda of attitude is not what we need in nola, and it shows weakness. trying to hurt the franchise player of another team, especially against a city that stepped up for us when no one else would, is weak and classless. until tonight, i saw cp3 as a decent, respectful person. so did the mvp voters.

I can't say I'm proud of the Hornets tonight - even Chris Paul. He waited until it was too late to take over, when it was evident early on that if he kept shooting we had a chance to win. I was so frustrated when we had it down to ten and we missed three shots in a row. Also I live in Austin so I'm all alone.

So toby what teammate was Rafer sticking up for last night? He's still sticking up for a teammate from a past game? How damn dumb is that? Tyson fouled out trying to guard Yao. You're sounding like he and West kicked Yao in the damn face or something. The fact is Raferisalwaysgetting into it with a Hornet player. I mean if he's gonna keep talking trash for shit that happened months ago, something is wrong with him. Sam Mitchell would probably say the same thing. Sticking up for a teammate? Are you kidding me? Oh yeah and speaking of trying to hurt players... what about Rafer trying to stick his foot under Tyson (not last game but the game before that , ala Bruce Bowen) and trying to undercut Tyson. That dude thinks he's in Rucker Park. LMAO! And as far as respect goes, Rafer can only wish to have as much respect throughout the league that Paul does. Stop all the damn hating. It's uncalled for.

until chandler is willing to protect the basket we are never going to be a serious contender. Chandler is starting to get on my nerves. Just because he cathces a few alleyoops every game he thinks he can call it a day.

Houston is as hot as ever right now, but they are still going to have to prove they can win a 7-game series. They have won 18 games in a row and essentially accomplished nothing. Must be a wierd feeling to wake up the day after you win your 18th game in a row, only to find out that you're only 3-1/2 games from being out of the playoffs. Granted, we're inthe same boat, but we've been pretty consistant all year. I still see us going 51-31, and that should be good enough to make the post season. I just cannot see the rockets maintaining this kind of shooting for the rest of the year. They would have beaten anyone saturday night. When T-Mac was not doubled, he scored. When he was doubled, he found the open man, and THAT dude scored. They were a well-oiled offensive machine. We were not. This was the 3rd game without David West. We didn't miss D-Weezy so much when we were playing the Leastern Conference, but going up against the hottest team in the hottest conference, thats a different story. I don't think the answer is running offensive sets FOR Tyson Chandler though. Lets face it, the guy scores on put-backs and alley oop dunks. He is NOT a shooter. On the other hand, what other kinda low post presence did we have. It would have been nice to have Bonzi out there, but he's laid up sorry too. And no, Chris Andersen would not have faired any better. Last thought, at least Bobby Jackson didn't kill us.

Although I'd like to see TC more aggressive on defense, I don't think I can hate on his play. I think it's how the defensive scheme is set up. Plus, a lot of guys in the league that get blocks do so coming from the weak side on a double team. D-West is usually a formidable defender, and we don't see a lot help needed on other big guys. Also, you'll notice a lot of times when Chandler sidesteps a penetrating player, he's in the semi-circle, and basically has to play matador. I hate that rule and the NBA is foolish to keep it. On the flip side, his athleticism is not something a lot of centers can keep up with, as we saw Saturday, and he's a rebounding machine. No he's not dominant. But that doesn't mean he doesn't do his job well. Ordinarily, we have three other superstars who can score. As for the loss itself, I'm starting to notice a trend in Hornets losses. In a lot of these games we are getting killed by a penetrating superstar who cycles the ball back to 3-ball shooters. (Think L.A.) Byron and co. need to find a better way to defend these teams. I don't think we want our strategy to be hope they miss. Guys are too good these days to do that. Then again, as Mikey says, let's see a team shoot like that in a 7 game series. Despite our rep as a running team, I think our best play comes when we resemble the Spurs more. When we had our long winning streak, we of course ran every opportunity we got. But when you don't get those opportunities--such as when a team is shooting well--you have to be able to bang low with your big guys, get the pick and roll running, and get good ball movement to find open shooters. It may not be as "exciting" but it wins games. We were methodical killers on that stretch, almost impossible to come back upon because we werent' relying upon hot or cold shooting, that part of the game was only our icing on the cake. Teams that can't run the half-court can't win championships. That's why the Lakers refused to deal Bynum and went for Gasol. It's why the Suns got Shaq. Run and gun is great but ask how many championships Rick Adelman and Donnie Nelson have compared to Phil Jackson and Popovich. Yeah. Zero to thirteen.

There's know way to know for sure, but the BEEEES would have had a chance if West and Wells were healthy......I hope Bonzi gets healthy before the end of the season so he can help us win. I believe I will be proved right if and when Wells gets well and plays well.......Give hem 4 games of 30min on the floor with CP3 and you're going to be pleasently surprised at his overall production. Wells has several 20p 12r games left in him......and he can do it against the best teams and best players in the league!!!!!!!! GO HORNETSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
