A fine game at the Arena tonight. The Hornets sputtered through the first half before turning it on after intermission and blitzing the visiting Rockets. Rafer Alston didn't feel much like talking afterwards.

Let's dive into the notes...
- Final score was 90-69 ( box score | recap | standings ). We had a tough time scoring in the first half, fell into a 14-point hole, and trailed 44-39 at the break. The defense was pretty solid from the start though, and only got better in the second half, when we limited Houston to just 25 points while scoring 51 at the other end.
- Much credit goes to Peja Stojakovic and Tyson Chandler in this one. They had just 13 points between them, but I figure they were the keys on defense tonight. Byron Scott opted to have Peja guard Tracy McGrady one-on-one for most of the game, which sounds a bit like a death wish when you say it out loud. The Serb more than held his own though. He played right up on T-Mac, not allowing him the room to catch, ponder and shoot like he did a couple of weeks ago when he dropped 41 on us.
Of course, playing so tight meant McGrady blew by Peja every so often, but the rest of our guys did a much better job of clogging the lane, then rotating to cover the shooters. When the Rockets did end up with deep open looks, they mostly misfired. As a team they finished 2-of-19 from downtown. - Chandler was one of those guys doing the lane clogging, but he also did a fantastic job of the old flash-and-recover against Houston's high picks. He'd end up chasing Rafer Alston or whoever almost out to halfcourt, then dash back under the basket before Houston could swing the ball and find the open man. He must be dog tired after all that. It looked like he was running suicides out there, he was back and forth so much in the halfcourt D.
- The offense was mostly taken care of by Chris Paul and David West for the first three quarters. CP finished with 21 points, 10 assists, 4 steals, 4 rebounds, and an uncharacteristic 5 turnovers. West got right back to work after missing two games with that ankle injury. He worked hard for 23 points and 11 boards.
- The fourth quarter belonged to Bonzi Wells. We were tied at 59 entering the final frame. Bonzi outscored the Rockets 20-10 the rest of the way.
He got his buckets a million different ways, too. He was attacking the basket and putting home tough layups, then posting up on Shane Battier and dropping baseline fadeaways. He shot five free throws and made them all, then even threw a cherry on top with a corner three-ball with 1:17 left in the game. - The thing I love most about Bonzi is that he's steady offense off the bench, which could not be said of Bobby Jackson. Throw Wells the rock down low and he'll get you some points on the board, while also giving up nothing on the defensive end (3 blocks and 2 steals for Bonzi tonight). I'm loving that trade more and more as the games go by.
- Another solid performance by Julian Wright tonight. He was his usual hyperactive self, running the break, grabbing rebounds, making some funky passes. He also got to guard T-Mac for most of the fourth quarter, and did a fine job.
Worth noting JuJu's stats since he started getting significant PT. In the past eight games, he's averaging 10.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 turnovers in 22.4 minutes. In that same stretch, he's been shooting 58.7 percent from the floor and has knocked down 5-of-10 three-pointers. - Attendance tonight was announced as 17,956. Make that seven sellouts in the past twelve home games. It's almost to the point where it's not a big deal anymore, which in itself is kind of a big deal.
- Play of the game: 4:20 left in the fourth, Hornets lead it by 13, and it's now or never for the Rockets. Alston calls for a pick on the wing, then opts to go baseline. West and Paul come at him hard with a trap to the corner, and Rafer ends up being hassled out of bounds. Hornets ball, and the capacity crowd roars its approval. Chris brings it up court and is fouled semi-hard by Alston before he has a chance to blow by him again. Seconds later, Rafer gets T'd up for talking too much.
Ah yes, that was the high-point for me. - Halftime show tonight was called Red Panda Acrobat, which was basically one Asian chick balancing atop a really tall unicycle while flipping an increasing number of plastic bowls from her foot to her head. She kicked five up there at the end and the crowd just about died of disbelief.
- Fresh from John Reid's latest on NOLA.com...
Chris Paul facetiously said he wished he could be half as good as Alston thinks he is.
"He called out one of our players," Paul said. "But I've never seen Rafer in an All-Star Game. David played in one this year (in New Orleans).
"(Tracy McGrady) is a great player, and if I were Rafer, I would ride his coattails, too." - I like Luis Scola. Dude's got some nice moves inside. And how does he keep his hair looking so manly?
- So what's up with Jannero Pargo? He went scoreless in 14 minutes tonight, missing all four field goal attempts. In the ten games so far this month, he's averaging 6.6 points on 29.4 percent shooting, compared to February averages of 11.3 points on 44.3 percent shooting.
Maybe the trade knocked him off. Before he could share point guard duties with Bobby Jackson in the second unit, but now his main job off the bench is to distribute the ball and run the offense. Or maybe not. I have yet to figure out the cause of his recent struggles. - After the Rockets scored a season-low 74 points against the Boston Celtics yesterday, Tracy McGrady told the media that he had never seen a better defense in his 11-year pro career. So here's me wondering how he feels about the Hornets defense that held his team to a new season-low of 69 points.
That win puts us back on top of the mighty Western Conference. Technically, we're tied with the Lakers and their identical 46-21 record, but we're above them in the standings because Chris Paul has nicer shoes.
Moving on, and we've got the Boston Celtics up next at the Hive on Saturday. That should be a trip. Beyond that there starts a six-game East coast road trip, which can only mean earlier games and faster recaps. Rejoice.

I just wanna kick the Celtics ass on Saturday! And yes, I'm loving Bonzi. I was forced to watch him back in his 1st year in Sacramento & I loved his style of play over there too. And your play of the game, was my play of the game too. I was soooo happy when that happened you don't even know.

Correction: Bonzi was 6/7 from the line. Not a perfect 5/5 like you said Ron.

I should have clarified, Stefan: I was throwing out Bonzi's fourth-quarter numbers.

I predicted it, I posted it here.....And it played out just as I said.....BonziplayWEll did his old team in. An encouraging note for Saturday's game is, BWells'other best game of the season was at Boston earlier this year(25p 9r) in a heart breaking loss. I have always thought Bonzi was a better allround player thar MoPet, even going back to college(I recall a discussion I had with BBaLL friend of mine, arguing that BW was better than AllAmerican MoPet, who was a Senior at MicState). MoPet is a lot better outside shooter than BWells (and that is important at certain times) but in the long run Wells is able to do more things(especially rebounds and steals) that help a team win....... If I were Byron Scott I might keep Wells on the bench at the start of games but find some way to get 30minutes for Bonzi, he can rest Pedj and MoPet.......and against some teams even David West for short periods of time........ IS CHRIS PAUL UNBELIEVABLY OF WHAT????? As much of a Bonzi fan as I am I still can't believe Wells outscored Houston 20p to 10 in 4thQ....I thought TMac and Shane were touted as good defenders. I've already bloged on the Houston Chronicle's web site rubbing their noises in it.....cause they NEVER gave Wells a chance to shine..... My hope is forMoPeat and BWElls will maintain a positive relationship...and contribute to good team chemistry....WE NEED EVERYONE ON THE SAME PAGE AND GO FOR THE NUMBER ONE SEED and A NBA CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!! It could happen....did anyone think the New York Giants were going to win the Super Bowl when there was 4 weeks left in the regular season???????? THE JAZZ PUT IT ON THE CELTICS IN BOSTON a little over a week ago, NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE LEAGUE TO SEE WE CAN DO THEM IN ALSO!!!! It's in our grasp, and now is the time....Is CP3 unbelievable of what????? HE'S THE MAN WHO CAN LEAD US TO INCRETABLE HEIGHTS!!!! GO HORNETS AND BUZZZZZZ IN THE Celtics ears!!!

I think it will be Hornets vs Celtics in the finals as well. I do believe wholeheartedly that the Rockets get out of Round 1, heck very possibly out of two, but I think CP3 lights the playoffs up. That being said, you guys are setting yourself up for dissapointment with Bonzi. BIG dissapointment. He had a good game, and he can be that player whenever he wants. As a Rocket he wanted it about every 10-12 days

I approach each Bonzi performance with a bit of cautious optimism, so in that respect I agree with you UofTOrange. On the other hand, Bonzi is in a contract year, and during his last contract year in Sac-town, he played like a man possessed. Then, of course, he signed with the rockets and immediately hated Jeff Van Gundy. As good as Bonzi's 4th QTR was tonight, everything still revolves around Chris Paul. Bonzi was able to do what he does tonight because CP3 does what HE does night in and night out. I really liked the wayCP covered (he who shall not be named) tonight. Chris got out deep, got in his face, and wouldn't let him spot up for open 3's. He also fought through screens quickly, not allowing (he who shall not be named) to get off many uncontested shots. The Rockets just looked completely spent mid-way through the 3rd Quarter. Their lead went bye bye, and then their shots weren't falling anymore. It looked like they had enough at that point. Adleman needs to regroup his troops before things get ugly. Tonight they really looked like a team that missed their superstar center, but as a Hornets fan, pardon me for not feeling sorry for another team's injury problems.

Also, Bonzi's looked good for several games now. We don't need him to keep it up forever. Just for the next couple months. ;-)

Very curious to see how the mpg change for each player after the last games. Yesterday up till mid of 3rd quarter BS was keeping Peja in all the time and then due to bench really picking up their performance he was kept there (in the last game i think PS, CP, TS were more than 40min each). Having BW and JW so positive from the bench also allows the team to rest players and make sure that the 82-game season is not issue by the playoffs (obviously more important is that they are adding points) . So my questions are: - How will BS manage expectations of MoPete/Pargo? Is their below expectation performance due to BW trade? -Do we expect MJ to offer something in the near future? -Any impact form Andersen in this year or is it all over? Been following New Orleans closely the last games and there seem to be something good going on. Hope BS makes sure the chemistry is ok and the team can do something better during Play-offs...

Hey AK. Here's my thoughts... - I think Pargo may have been affected by the trade, but not so much Mo-Pete. Pargo's role changed slightly in that he's expected to be more of a quarterback out there now, being the primary backup for CP instead of sharing that duty with Bobby Jackson. I'm not sure how much that has to do with his poor play of late though. It may just be a slump he's going through, and hopefully he can shake it in time for the Playoffs. As for Mo, I don't know what to tell you. His defense is still pretty good, but he's giving us very little on offense lately. I think Byron will keep him as the starter though, because we really benefit from Bonzi's scoring ability off the bench. - James could get some looks. Pargo likes to get his points off pull-ups, while James prefers to take it to the hole. Byron might turn to James when we start settling for outside shots. - I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Andersen on the court this season. If we stay healthy, he'll likely remain inactive, and there's no way he'll make the Playoff roster. I hope he keeps his head up though and comes ready next season.

why is everyone so worried about CRACKHEAD anderson?? Mr. Drug man who managed to get back on a team that doesn't even WANT him. THe only reason why he's back on the team is because some strings were pulled for him. Did the media share that? It's ARmstrong I'm worried about and if he'll ever see the daylight of the court again...and an insulting 38 seconds of PT doesn't count. Poor guy. I hope HE keeps his head up and comes ready for next season. I personally think he's better off elsewhere...just like Bass.

What are the rules regarding playoff rosters, Ron? Clarify that for us, if you will.

I disagree entirely with the French dude's comments about Birdman- and I think Ron is off-base in predicting we won't see him this season. I honestly don't give two shits if he was suspended for doing lines of coke off a girlscout's ass- I care about performance on the floor. I think Byron Scott is bringing Birdman along at a measured pace untill he is as comfortable with the playbook as guys who have been there. JuJu couldn't buy his way onto the court for most of the season- now he is looking like a go-to relief player. Birdman is a good team chemistry-high energy- high performance for a relief player talent(see Ryan's output-per-minutes-analysis a couple weeks back). I've got imaginary cash money that says he is on the active list come playoff time- hopefully along with Hilton. I have personally given up on Ely- but he has more years in the league, and I am afraid Scott might go with the more experienced player. As for the guys questioning Bonzi Wells- I similarly don't care about his "history". This is a close knit team with a strong coach- and a future hall of famer that has his back. Bonzi has played fantastic- but I'm pretty sure he realizes that CP3 is THE big dog on the floor and in the locker room. Dennis Rodman was the biggest head-case in NBA history- andHE helped Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan win a couple rings as I recall. Lets all show Bonzi some love and let him do his thing.

Info on Playoff rosters from NBA.com... Each team that qualifies for the NBA Playoffs must submit a list of its players eligible to compete in playoff games on the day following the end of the regular season. Because there is no Injured List for the NBA Playoffs, each playoff team must designate the 12 players eligible for the playoffs from all of its regular season lists (Active, Injured and Suspended). A player who is on the Injured, Active or Suspended List at the end of the regular season, but who is not designated for playoff eligibility, need not be waived. He remains on the appropriate regular season list through the NBA Playoffs. Teams must have at least nine eligible players dressed and able to play in a playoff game. Teams failing to comply are subject to fines. From that I believe we have to pick 12 guys for the Playoffs and even if one of them goes down injured, we can't replace him with another guy from the regular season roster. So, I'm thinking the following eight players will feature in the Playoff rotation: Paul, Peterson, Peja, West, Chandler, Pargo, Wells and Wright. That leaves us with four spots between Ely, Bowen, Armstrong, Andersen, Butler and James. Which two get left out?

What a tough question you ask Master Ron. I'm not that basketball savvy but I'm going to say Armstrong, I really like the guy but he makes too many mistakes - I want to keep him but maybe next year will be the charm. The other guy I say out is Anderson - won't have played with the team enough to beable to fit in. Play Ely a minimum - and keep Bowen as a defender and rebounder. I think Butler and James have good sense and could help fill in some minutes.

I think Butler is pretty clearly done for the season. I hope they sit Ely as well-but it could be Hilton. Why would they have added Birdman's contract if not to play him? They have to keep James active as a back-up point in case disaster strikes- and they are paying him too damn much to sit at home. Bowen has proven his worth again and again. I'm going with Butler and Ely as the odd men out.

Wow, that would be a good discussion by itself. IMO Butler is pretty much done. He is pretty much a spot up shooter who can't shoot this year. Both Mike James and Bonzi Wells can creat their own offense, take it to the hole, get to the FT line, and defend. James and Bonzi's playoff experience also cannot be ignored. I also think that Andersen was brought in to motivate our 2 reserve big guys that have beenthe model of inconsistencyall year. If I had to pick someone to inactivate for the playoffs right now, it would be Andersen, but I wouldn't be suprised if he made the roster and one of the other guys (Hilton or Ely) is ousted. I think between the two active reserve big men, Ely has the advantage because he's got the playoff experience. The only wild card in this equation is David West's ankles (let us pray). I'm just glad to see that bringing in Andersen is only a real discraction to the fansand not the team itself. I was worried he woulddork up our team chemistry, but in hindsight, he was brought in at the perfect time. Our chemistry was already temporarily shaken when we did the B-Jax trade. So bringing in Andersen at that time just adds a third new face. I think that took alot of media pressure off him as well as the team.

Anyone else think Hilton looked great in 34.whatever seconds in the end of this game? A great move under the basket and a monster reverse jam. Then a block or deflection that was key on the defensive end? I still can't figure out why one bad game put him in the doghouse when he had several good ones. But either way, I agree with those who say Butler is out for the playoffs. Also, it's clear that one big man will sit out as well. While I'd like to say it would be Ely, most coaches like to go with experience, and so I dare say it'd be him over Hilton. Although, if Birdman gets no play in the regular season, it's almost certain to be him. My only other question is that I thought you could re-orient your 12 man roster every series. That is, change it from series to series, to accommodate poor play or injuries. Any confirmation or denial of that?

@Wawer: I'm not sure about the series to series thing. It sounds to me like there's just one "Playoff roster" though, so I doubt you can switch it up between each series. For example, Ely was left of the Spurs Playoff roster last season, so that makes it sound like team's only get to make their decision once.
