What a finish.
I was just about ready to criticize David West's performance against the Cavaliers tonight. He couldn't get a body on Anderson Varejao all game, didn't get his first rebound until the third quarter, passed up several open jumpers, shot the ball poorly and never figured out the double teams down low.
But then he goes and hits the gamer, erasing the late heroics of LeBron James and breaking the Cavaliers' hearts along with their nine-game win streak at the Q. West might have struggled up until those final seconds, but once again he left the floor shining bright.

Notes from the Hornets 49th win of the season...
- Final score was 100-99 ( recap | box score | standings ). It was pretty close throughout, with neither team amassing a double-digit lead at any point. With 12 seconds left in the game, LeBron took it right down the middle to put the Cavs ahead by one, then the Hornets answered with that jumper by West out of a timeout. Less than a second left, no timeouts for the Cavaliers. Thank you, Cleveland, and good night.
- Chris Paul shot horribly, finishing 5-of-17 from the floor for 15 points. Everything else he did was amazing. He racked up 20 assists, including that last-gasp dish to West after drawing the entire city of Cleveland into the paint.
He was throwing incredible passes all game, like that one to Peja Stojakovic at the beginning of the third quarter, where Chris found himself double-teamed on the low block, yet somehow managed to find his sniper on the far wing for an open triple. By halftime, Chris had 11 assists racked up, while the Cavs had dished just 9 between them.
Oh, and Chris also managed to pick up 2 steals while turning the ball over just once. He'll be wearing his underwear over his shorts any day now.
- LeBron James also had a sub-par shooting night, sinking just 6-of-14 for 21 points, the same amount he scored in New Orleans almost three months ago. This time though, LeBron can't blame it on Bourbon Street.
Our defense on James was pretty good. Peja was actually checking him most of the game, and definitely deserves credit for his efforts. As always though, it has to be a team effort to slow a guy like LeBron, and I thought everybody did a pretty good job helping out tonight. We might have even been a little too focused on that dude, which could explain the numerous open looks we gave up to his teammates. - I know I just got done praising Peja's D, but I must say I was surprised to see him guarding James out high on the Cavs' last offensive trip. I would have expected Byron to give Bonzi that assignment. Can't be faulting Scott too much these days, though. Everyone was expecting a Hornets' fade after the All-Star break but Coach hasn't let it happen.
- On the offensive end, Peja started ice cold tonight, missing his first six shots. But man did he ever heat up. He knocked down 8-of-10 the rest of the way, including six triples. When just about everyone else was misfiring down the stretch, it was Peja who kept us afloat by dropping 11 points in less than five minutes. Keep doing what you do, foreign dude.
- Also not from this country is Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who gave us fits tonight. He was scoring inside and out and never seemed to miss, to the point where I swear he was hitting shots he didn't even take. At the end of it all he had a season-high 29 points to go along with 15 rebounds.
- Big Z was a tough cover for Tyson Chandler, who always seems to get burned by bigs that can step out and hit the long J. Our pivot didn't have himself a bad game though, finishing with 13 points and 11 boards. He caught some nice lobs from CP early, and came up with a massive put-back late. Solid game overall, just needs to figure out how to guard those big shooters.
- Overall we got slaughtered on the boards, 48-33. Varejao and Ilgauskas combined for 15 offensive rebounds, giving the Cavaliers way too many second chance opportunities. The Hornets have now been out-rebounded in four straight games, with the opposition grabbing an average of 9.5 extra boards during that stretch.
- CST sideline reporter Jordy Hultberg grabbed assistant coach Paul Pressey for a quick chat after the second quarter came to a close. They wrapped it up with this exchange:
Jordy: You're looking good tonight, my friend.
Pressey: I'm just tryin' to get like you. - West's line for the night: 20 points, 7-of-19 FGs, 6 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers.
- Damon Jones seems to have the same arrogance as our friend Rafer Alston, but has even less game to back it up. Jones came in the game tonight late first quarter, and acted like he was some kind of superstar after he dropped a quick three. He didn't seem so cocky though when he got blocked a minute later by Bonzi Wells, or when Peja faked him out of his shoes in the fourth quarter.
- The Cavaliers celebrated the 3,000th broadcast of radio announcer Joe Tait at halftime. Dude looked a lot like a much older version of Chuck, the Hornets PA announcer at the Arena. Anyone know Chuck's last name?
- Great stuff in Jim Eichenhofer's latest five observations post, where he calls the victory over the Cavs our most impressive road win since the All-Star break. Jim's thoughts on the play of Chris Andersen tonight...
The 6-foot-10 backup center totaled eight minutes of playing time Wednesday, but he was the second reserve to enter the game, at 1:25 of the first quarter. His lone scratch on the stat sheet came in the form of a three-point play, a confident drive to the rim. Meanwhile, neither Melvin Ely nor Ryan Bowen got into the game Wednesday. Hilton Armstrong was a healthy inactive for the second straight night.
Also some nice details in there regarding the Hornets "no-frills" campaign to promote Byron Scott as Coach of the Year. Check it out. - Jannero Pargo had a better game than yesterday. He didn't shoot great (4-of-11) and missed that wide-open three late, but he gave us 13 points and 4 boards off the bench. I can live with a bad shooting night from Pargo so long as he isn't taking real bad shots. Against the Cavs, he didn't appear to be forcing it.
- Pargo got 24 minutes of burn, which included the entire fourth quarter. Morris Peterson did start the game despite that knock he got against the Pacers yesterday, but Byron only had him in there for 19 minutes.
- From the AP recap...
Stojakovic (1,389) moved past Antoine Walker into eighth place in career 3-pointers. - Play of the game tonight? It was either that uncontested layup by Sasha Pavlovic in the first quarter or David West's game-winner. Tough call.
Next up our Hornets will travel to Boston for a Friday rematch with those same Celtics we beat last week. Something tells me the C's still remember that game and are not entirely satisfied with the way it turned out for them. Could be trouble.
But that's all in the future. Let's kick back and savor the moment. Now is a fine time where the memory of a David West dagger is still fresh, the Hornets have won five straight, and the Bobcats lead the Lakers by double-digits in the third quarter.
Life is good.

I'm just glad we won. Even if we do lose to the Celtics now, we won't be on a 2 game losing streak.

We won, yay, but rebounding has GOT to be a major concern. I think our rebounding woes against the Cavs actually have more to do with our focus on doubling Lebron, and Z drawing TC out from under the basket. You essentially have David West trying to box out 2 or 3 dudes. Thats not an easy task. Oh, and a quick word about Kobe Bryant if I may: Serious MVP candidates do NOT get ejected from a home game, in lateMarch, against the freakin' BOBCATS, with the conference #1 seed on the line, down 8,with less than 4min to go in the 4th QTR. (best run-on sentence of ALL TIME) Just exactly how valuable are you when you're watching from the locker room as your team loses, at home,to the Bobcats?Lakers didlose, by the way. I think Kobe's only one Technical away from a 1-game suspension, or someone correct me on that.

Yup, 1 away. I just read one of the Cleveland papers writers, and he referred to Peja as a traffic cone with legs. Did he watch the game at all? As usual, Peja did his solid perimeter defensive job, pushing LeBron towards help and making his long range bombs hard to get off. Sure, LeBron beat him twice - but pick any defender in the league and LeBron will shake free a couple times against them. I'm so tired of it.

How many victories is Mo Pete going to not contribute to? Can someone please explain to me what value he is bringing to the table? I'm starting to think he is a lucky charm! The hornets need to replace him this summer, He is nothing more than a default starter - byron wont start juju and im sure he wants to keep bonzi coming off the bench. - this summer we need to get Ben Gordon to replace bonzi as the go to bench guy, and have bonzi move up as starting OG...off guard

This is the first time that I have seen the Hornets and Chris Paul play this year. As a Cavs fan I was obviously disappointed in the outcome of the game. I was hoping the Cavs would catch them on a backend of back to back and pull of a victory. It was nice to see a competitive, relatively well officiated game that was decided by the players. Nice win for the Hornets.

Well said, Chris. The Cavs are a tough team to beat at home. I didn't know this until late last night, but they are also, according to the dudes at NBATV, the #1 rebounding team in the Association. After what Varajao (get a haircut) and Big-Zdid on the glass last night, I can see why. This game was HUGE for the Hornets because with a game remaining against Miami on this road trip, there is a good chance we can finish at least 3-3. I want to go 6-0 of course, but I have this feeling that Boston will have something for us on Friday night.

Chris Paul is fun to watch and he is only going to get better. Would love to have a point guard with half his talent in Cleveland. Watching Paul play shows how terribly the point guard situation is in Cleveland. West could not hold Paul's Jock strap. I sure hope the Hornets beat the Lakers. I would hate to see Kobe win a title.

First time commenting, but I love the site. Couple things: Tait is a legend, so watch it. Jones may be cocky, but I notice you conveniently didn't mention the big shots he hit down the stretch. He was in Mike Brown's doghouse for a while, but is in good graces and playing well. I'd like to see a Cavs-Hornets final, but the Cavs' chances might be longer than NO's. Good luck!

Thanks for the comment, Joel. I didn't expect my comment on Tait to cause any offense. 3000 broadcasts is incredible. Regarding Jones, it just irks me how cocky he always is despite a career average of 6.7ppg. I get it that NBA players need to be supremely confident in their abilities, but DJ seems to overdo it. Pargo brings more to the table but you never see him acting like he's a superstar. Most you get is a cold-blooded stare when he comes up big in the clutch.

I think you misunderstand amon Jones (by the way, there is a reason I left the "D" out of his name) antics. If you watch him on a nightly basis, he does not take himself seriously. He is just having fun. It would be fun to watch a Cav NO final, but I too believe the Cavs willhave a harder time gettingthere than NO. I think NO point guard play will get them far. Cavs need some serious help at the point. WatchingWests play at the point last night against Paul was not pretty. One of these days, hopefully soon, theCavs will put a point guard on the floor with Lebron and then watch out. Lebron is a beast. Good luck to NO, you have a good team to watch.

@ryan heres a e-mail i went to that cleveland writer Paul came from the left side to double-team, but James drove hard to the right, around Peja Stojakovic, a traffic cone with legs, then past the late challenge of Tyson Chandler. The layup that gave James his 49th straight game of at least 20 points worked too well. Too much time was left. if peja was a traffic cone with legs why was lebron only held to 21 pionts dude you shouldn't be a writer if you aren't even going to pay attention to what your writing about. and just so you know peja was the reason new orleans won not david west because if you had watched the game i was watching peja shut out lebron and kept us in the game when no one else was making baskets so dont diss the serb till you got something true to say Emir lidan ye maybe he didn't total shut out lebron but lebron was held to 21 pionts and the whole team helped shut him out but i feel like giving credit to peja since barely any1 else does

Yeah, I didn't take the Tait comment to be anything other than in jest. The "listen in" that the CSN Ohio broadcast did during the 2nd quarter where they played Tait's radio commentary over the video of the game was pretty sweet. It was much better than listening to the play by play T.V. guys - even though I thought Cleveland's T.V. guys weren't bad at all.

I remember watching DWest at XU and I was MUCH MORE THAN IMPRESSED. The rebounding, steals, blocks and that GREAT offensive game.......What he has improved most since college is his 15 to 18feet game .....which is MONEY NOW. Some probably thought he is a little undersized as a 4 but they were WRONG....just like the 30 teams who passed on Carl Landry in this last draft!!!!! What great shot by David and it was all set up by that penetration by CP3MVPMVPMVPMVP!!!! Who does more More MORE! Why is he BETTER than Kobe??????????? More unselfish, more creative YES MORE CREATIVE, more steals AND MORE DIFFICULT TO GUARD...YES BETTER THAN kobe....Better than KGarnett, more explosive making his teamates even BETTER a more accurate outside shooter.....AND WEBEAT lebron in his own house.....CP3's most underrated area of his game is his defense. How many ways does Mr Paul beat a team????? And he takes and MAKES big shoots. Hats off to the Hornets in that win over the Cavs....and I agree with the bloger who asked how many more games does MoPet start when he is doing so little on he court????? Wells had 25p 9r in 29minutes in Boston earlier this year........About 5 years ago in Minn KG guarded Bonzi most of the second half when Wells went for 28 in second half and 35 for the game. It could be tomorrow night is the time to go back to Wells, a man who can score on anyone......a great third or fourth option. It really doesn't matter who scores the points....Iwas about to say Pedja and Pargo had lost their touch and they both hit BIG shots in that great win! Byron Scott is pulling the right levers, flipping the correct switches and keeping the right focus in this run in the through Western Conference. He got the shaft in NewJersey and it's our benifit now. Our preparation has been consistant through out the season,,,,kudos to all the coaches. If we beat the Celtics?????????Let's come home in FIRST PLACE in the West and continue in that #1 seed on our way to a NBA title!!!!!!!

Ron, No problem on Tait. He's a unique guy, including the way he looks. If you get a minute, try to track down a clip of him doing the DiGiorno promos. Chris is right on Damon Jones (I've heard the Amon Ones, no D and no J, thing a lot). ... He's having fun, which is why I like him. If he wasn't a Cav, I'd certainly hate him, so no worries. Good luck the rest of the way!

You know, I too have been impressed with Peja's defense lately. It goes back several games now. Surprisingly, the last time I really was unhappy with him was against Luol Deng, but that guy was just sprinting everywhere to make plays, no wonder he didn't play more minutes that game. Other than that, he's really seemed focused on stopping guys. It's like Byron showed him something that lit a fire under him. And on the other end of the floor, I love how he's 100% unflappable. He missed what, his first five shots last night? And do you think he thought about it once as he took the next five? I doubt it. And sure enough, they kept feeding it to him, and he started draining shots. Amazing.

I was reading a truehoops article about Paul going to cleveland to join up with lebron ina year. Well why not the other way around. Why doesnt Shinn try and lure in Lebron. Not only would you sell out the hornets arena every game with Lebron and CP on the same team you could probably move games to the Superdome and sell that out for 41 straight games. Imagine how much attention would be placed on the Hornets and new orleans. We would be the talk of sports, it would revitalize basketball by having the two best players in the league playing with each other. Paul--Peja--Lebron--West--Chandler would be an unstoppable starting 5. Yes we are over the cap but the financial gains would be bigger than the lux tax losses. We would be on antional TV all the time, win championchip after championchip and just destroy the rest of the NBA. We would be the definition of a dynast. Well why would lebron want to come to new orleans a small NBA market? a)He is best friends with Paul b)He can win all the awards and trophies he wants here. he can not only go down as one of the greatest players ever but also play on one of the best teams ever. c)Him and CP would make this a huge market, the entire world would watch this team play. This is the offical Lebron + CP in 2009 campaign.

Yes, it would be nice, but it's never gonna happen. No way Shinn could go that far over the cap. The eventual rewards might be great, but he doesn't have the money to make it happen in the first place. And I don't see LeBron wanting to come to New Orleans all that much. He wants bigger and brighter lights methinks. N.O. isn't a star-struck town and it seems LeBron likes being worshiped. And I don't foresee CP and LeBron teaming up in Cleveland either. I imagine Chris will always be happy to remain a Hornet so long as the front office keeps making solid moves and surrounding him with talent.

It was a great game. It was kind of payback time for LeBron. I remember two years ago in OKC LeBron but up a shot at the buzzer that knocked the Hornets out for the playoffs. (if my memory is right). I also have sweet memories of seeing D. West having buzzer beaters here in OKC. I remember those like yesterday. Also - to mW - I totally agree with you on Peja. What a great win.

I've found myself looking forward to a Hornets game day almost as much for the 247 cyber-freak-fest (INCLUDING idol references) as the game itself. I think that makes me sad. Like in the corner of kindergarden with weird stains sad. So... why couldn't Byron start Juju at the 2? Why WOULDN'T Byron start Juju at the 2. His D seems to be on a par with Mo's (the main reason I can see Mo holding down the starter spot) and if his shot isn't falling he can slash and follow up. Mo seems better utilised as a second unit gun - left in if he is hitting and let cool on the benchif he comes in cold. I'm just worried that we seem to have had to come back from slow first quaters too much lately. It makes for an exciting game (being in Oz I listen to Sean and V on the audio stream), but I'm pretty sure I'd be just as happy if we demolished teams from the start rather than clawing back from 15+ down. Of course, we could just get Bronbron. Or Gordon. Or maybe Monta - I hear he's quite good. Or coax Mitch Ritchmond out of retirement. Maybe MJ can still get up and down...........

Wow. Someone said something good about my Idol post! I think Mo is slowly working towards being replaced if he doesn't hit his shots. Still, I think he fits in well though with the starting unit - giving it defense, some space to operate by spreading the floor a little, and little need to send the ball his way. With Chandler, West, Peja and Paul all capable of scoring in one way or another, we really don't need another person to feed the ball to to begin with. I've got a post all planned out about Peja and Byron. Twill be fun!
