Crazy win in Orlando tonight. You might even say we stole this one.
It came down to the Hornets trailing 92-95 with a minute and five remaining. Mo Evans gets called for a foul on Mo Peterson as the latter breaks into the backcourt for the inbound. Foul away from the ball; that's one shot and possession. The replay shows Peterson was the one who created the contact, but it's too late now as Peja cans the free-throw, then knocks down a triple a dozen seconds later. Hornets lead it by one.
Fast-forward past a missed three by Evans, and Peja tries a 16-footer at the other end. It's off, and after some battling the ball ends up out of bounds. Hornets will keep it, despite the valid protests by Orlando. Twelve seconds remain. An inbound, a foul and a couple of Peja free-throws later, and this one's almost in the books. Just to prolong the anxiety there's a dunk by Hedo Turkoglu, two bricked free-throws by Chris Paul, and a too-short pull-up by Keyon Dooling at the buzzer.
Hornets win it by the narrowest of margins, and our guys look more relieved than joyous as they exit stage right.

Notes...
- Final score was 98-97 ( recap | box score | standings ). The Hornets were hampered by foul trouble early and fell behind by as many as 14 points early in the third. We managed to battle back behind some insane offensive rebounding and then it was neck and neck all through the fourth.
- Great game by Mo Pete, who not only managed to fool the refs into calling that foul on Evans, but also dropped 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-6 makes from downtown. The last time Peterson had such a big offensive game was way back in early January, when he scored 22 in Phoenix.
Mo also did a nice job chasing down the boards -- he finished with 6 -- hustling after loose balls, and playing solid help D. - Stojakovic struggled mightily against Hedo all night, at both ends of the floor. Peja shot just 2-of-11 for 10 points, while allowing his counterpart to go off for 26 on 10-of-19 shooting. However, there was redemption for our guy late, as he knocked down that big triple and didn't allow Hedo to get loose for any late looks. Well, except for that dunk, but whatever.
- Chris Paul had a rough one, but somehow managed to come away with magic numbers of 19 points and 12 assists. He got in foul trouble early and got upset with the officials, although methinks he didn't have much of a case. He couldn't get his shot dropping consistently (6-19 FGs, 0-4 3Ps), and turned the ball over an uncharacteristic four times.
And then came those late misses at the free-throw line, which could have cost the Hornets the game. I seem to remember CP bricking a pair like that down the stretch earlier this season, though I can't recall which game it was exactly.
Still, when it's all said and done, Chris Paul on a bad night like tonight still trumps half the point guards in the game. - The Magic did a great job defending David West. From the start, Rashard Lewis was right up on West when he faced up out high, then fronting him in the post. Orlando can get away with that fronting because they have great help-side D from Dwight Howard. Of course, playing West so aggressively got Lewis into foul trouble, and that really hurt the Magic because we had no answer for him on defense. He was just on fire from deep in the first half, and finished with 24 points (9-12 FGs, 6-8 3Ps) in just 29 minutes.
- West finished with 18 points (6-16 FGs) and 11 boards. He got burned a number of times trying to guard perimeter guys, and for much of the game he seemed really reluctant to go all the way out and put a hand in the face of a Rashard Lewis or a Keith Bogans.
- Tyson Chandler played a great first half tonight. He was challenging all kinds of shots without leaving Howard alone for easy rebounds. He got busy on the boards himself early, grabbing six in the first half. He was bothered a bit by foul trouble later, and that seemed to limit his aggressiveness. He did manage to set countless concrete picks on Keyon Dooling in the fourth quarter, though, which either freed up CP to work some magic of his own, or allowed Tyson to roll off and catch a lob at the rim.
Tyson finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds (6 offensive), and even knocked down a pair of clutch free-throws in the fourth quarter. - With Tyson playing just 33 minutes due to that foul trouble, and Melvin Ely inactive due to some kind of illness, Byron Scott decided to roll the dice and throw Hilton Armstrong out there tonight. And that turned out pretty damn good.
Hilton had himself a damn fine showing out there, rebounding his ass off and frustrating the hell out of Dwight Howard, who initially mistook Armstrong for an April Fool's joke. Hilton even pulled up and banked home a 14-footer out there at one point, because that's just how he rolls, bitches. - Pargo, Wells and Wright were the only other guys off the Hornets bench tonight, and they all contributed pretty good. Bonzi seemed to quieten down Lewis for a stretch, while Pargo came in and gave us some great minutes when CP was benched with foul trouble in the first half. As for JuJu, he only played five minutes in the second quarter, but on one play managed to cover fourteen miles in half a second to reject a Keith Bogans triple, then followed it up later with a sweet spin move to get two in the lane.
- This was a match-up of two well-coached teams, as both Scott and Stan Van Gundy are in the running for Coach of the Year honors. My buddy Mikey called me during the game to point out how well Van Gundy was using his timeouts to halt any runs we had. Commenter mW also noted this in the game thread, and contrasted it to the approach of coaches like Byron and Phil Jackson, who will often sit back and let their team play through the lulls. I'm not sure there's a right way and a wrong way here. Sometimes calling a timeout helps your team regroup and refocus; other times the players benefit more by playing through it and growing as a team.
- I must question Byron's decision to leave Mo Pete on the bench for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter. On normal nights, that makes sense, but when Mo has been lighting it up from downtown and Bonzi is out there bricking triples, surely you have to get the hot hand back in the game.
- The Magic have some impressive pieces. I knew what to expect from Howard, but I didn't realize Lewis could D up like that, or that Hedo was so versatile. That dude has great handles for a guy listed as 6-10, and he has those big lunging steps that help him get by guys and finish in the lane. Very nice player.
- Gil McGregor's best pun of the night: Upon noticing that the Hornets' mascot, Hugo, was in the building, Gil commented that "Hugo bees here!"
You see, that's funny because Hugo is a hornet, a hornet is an insect, and bees are also insects. Gil had to substitute out the more appropriate word (is) to get the pun in there, but given the time constraints I think you'll agree that the joke still worked quite well, and may have even proved devastating to any good-humored individual within earshot.
It's my hope that through constant analysis of Gil's puns, some day we will all be able to possess such wittiness ourselves. Only then will we be able to impress the ladies.
- Great board work from the Hornets tonight. 51-30 was our advantage, including an incredible 21-2 edge on the offensive glass. It was true team effort, with guys like Pargo and Peja coming up with seven boards apiece. The Magic are no slouches on the glass either, averaging 42.1 rebounds a game, compared to our 41.9.
- Play of the game: Well, maybe not a crowd pleaser, but I thought that steal and breakaway jam by Chris Paul midway through the second quarter was incredible. Pargo had just gotten blocked on a similar opportunity, but Chris turned on the afterburners and made sure nobody was going to catch him. That acceleration was amazing.
Next up we've got the final game of the road trip in Miami tomorrow. The Heat suck so bad right now that I'd consider the entire trip a failure if we drop that game. It's one we absolutely should not lose.
As of right now, we're still on top of the West (obviously), but the Spurs just got done beating the Warriors in Texas, so they're still breathing down our necks. The good news is that the Suns lost to the Nuggets, so that spreads out the West a little. Well, not really. It's still pretty crowded in here.
Leaving you with some freshness...

With you on the "more relieved than joyful." Did you catch Byron Scott with Chris Paul at the end? That was pretty hilarious. CP looked like he wanted to cry when the guys tried to high five him.

Yeah, I saw that. CP put his hands to his head after the final buzzer sounded. You know those free-throws would have eaten away at him had we lost. Actually, I'm sure he'll be beating himself up about it anyway.

Yeah, this was getting eerily similar to the New Year's eve game versus Toronto. Paul's shooting barely above 70% from charity the last 10 games. Just sayin'...

The Orlando guys interviewed Paul at the end of the game, and he had two great lines: "Peja is amazing. Just amazing. But yeah, when Peja took that three, we only needed two, so if he missed it, I was going to kill him." "Ikill guys all the time about missing shots in those situations. I have to knock those things down."

thats thesecond roshambo victory on this road trip. we didnt really steal it like the new jersey nov. game, but we did put on our yarmulkes and jew them down nicely -on nbatv cp looked pissed as a fothermucker in the post game interview when they asked him about those missed free throws...dude looked about as upset/dejected as all those people leaving the building. just relentless tenacity exuding from his face...hell prolly shoot 3000 free throws before the heat game. -whos s.ac? -ron ill gladly take gil and his pun happy ass over bob licht anyday...if i had it my way, gerry v would be the commentator and gordys lame ass would be gone. if youre reading this gordy, STOP SUCKING! it was about as nasty as a mono-gono-herpa-syphilitis yeast infected vag, but sometimes you gotta pound through that to get what you want.

Your comments are unmistakable, Bob. I actually like the Hornets announcers. Jordy is probably my favorite out of the three TV guys, but Bob and Gil are cool, too. They're obviously homers, but they're paid to be just that.

I wonder if coach going with Hilton had anything to do with him playing well against Orlando in his 13 minutes back in November (1-2 FG%, 2-2 FT%, 4 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), while holding his own against Dwight Howard? TC went down with an injury in that game. Or maybe it was just his "turn" in Scott's rotation. Either way, I thought he did great tonight (15 min, 5 pts, 7 reb, 1 ast). He came out slow, but then turned it up when TC got into foul trouble. It's like he knows when the team really needs him and turns it up. If he can keep up that level of play as a regular back-up, while learning to hold onto the ball a little better, he has a good shot at being a key back-up. And he's still young and learning. Awesome.

Ron, it was the Toronto game on New Years Eve. That was the other "CP missed FTwith under a minute left" game. We lost that game. IfI can recall the game... that means there aren't many of them. We were all waiting for a game where Mo-Pete goes off, and we got it tonight. His effort was huge. He was rebounding, running the floor, diving for loose balls, and even pulling the wool over the refs' eyes in getting that foul call in the 4th QTR. He may not have won the game, but his effort definitely kept us in it. That is what veterans do during a playoff run when it gets to April. Dwight Howard had 15 boards, and that was exactly half of Orlando's rebounds. We were attacking the glass with ferocity, and I was loving it. Wow 21 offensive rebounds, 6 by Tyson, and he only had 7 total. Speaking of Tyson, I've noticed something during the road trip. Teams have gone to the "Hack-a-Tyson" as their primary defense on that unstoppable alley-oop. Get to work on those free throws, big fella. Expect to see ALOT more of that as the playoffs draw near.

Even MVP's are human, CP3 needs to shake these missed freethrows off!!!! And having 4 turnovers is bad for him, but a three to one turn-to-assist ratio is not bad.......CP is our MAN andwill go on to have BETTER games soon......Hats off to MoPet, great all round game......(correction: BWells missing 1out of2 threes isNOT "bricking up" threes).I like the balanced scoring last night.....we will need that kind of team effort........how about those 20+ offensive rebounds aganist DHoward!!!!! No let downs now, keep the heat on those cool Heat.....and get this last important road win. It would be good to see the bench...... (how about HiltonA's 5 offensive rebs last night) Pargo JWright and Wells should get more minutes in this back to back situation......we need MORE than just the starters being productive!!!!!! GEAUXXXXXX STINGGGGGGINNN HORNETTTTTTSS!!

I thought Bonzi threw up and missed two long bombs on one possession in the fourth quarter, but maybe one was inside the arc. Either way, I'd rather have Mo Pete pulling the trigger on those. If we want to get some points out of Bonzi, we need to isolate him on the low block and let him go to work.

Bench Production: Points: Hornets - 20, Magic - 19 Rebs: Hornets - 16, Magic - 12 Assists: Hornets - 3, Magic - 4 It was a slight advantage, but oh what a difference one point makes.

Does anyone understand Byron Scott's big man rotation?

Cool page, just found this. Great run down of the game, was on the edge of my seat there at the end. As for Chris being tough on himself, the day he lets up is the day he loses that edge that makes him who he is. It's that relentless competitive nature that has had him grow so much this early in his career. Plus he realizes that he's the leader. During a playoff run, in a competitive western conference where every game counts and this game is coming down to a 1 point difference, he knows how important that is. Those misses will only make him better as he works to improve and prevent it from happening again. I will say, I think he should have had issue with that 2nd early foul. Called for charging when the defensive guy is not set and is still shuffling to get into position? Come on.. Those officials were horrible all night though, seemed to eventually balance out. You gotta let the stars play though, this is playoff caliber basketball, you don't call goofy things and put the stars on the bench for either team. I hope this official crew doesn't get to call playoff games.

Welcome, Juncti. Always good to see a new name in the comments. I get your point about that 2nd foul on CP, but it's just odd to see Chris running into a guy like that, even if the defender's feet aren't set. Usually he avoids those situations pretty well. I thought the third foul was harsh in particular, when Chris was battling with Howard for a rebound. All in all though, I thought we got real lucky with the calls at the end. Magic fans have much more reason to criticize the officiating last night.

Regarding the big man rotation, I think Byron played it pretty well last night. Andersen didn't handle Bosh too well on Sunday, Ely was ill, and Armstrong played pretty well against Orlando earlier in the year so he deserved a shot. Turned out nicely. Bowen seems to have fallen out of favor, but I imagine he'll get another chance.

Saunak, here's the best way I can describe the big man rotations.Coach Scottuses the pasta theory. If he keeps throwing them all up against the wall, eventually one of them will stick.

Yes indeed, a good performance from the "Dr. Jekyl" version of Hilton. Unfortunately we will more than likely see "Mr. Hyde" very soon, and he'll be riding pine again.

Yeah, that's what I mean. It balanced out eventually. I mean a call on Paul for being under Howard to me about equaled being called for being short? I also can't stand the calls on Chandler when he stands there with his hands straight up, no contact, yet a foul call on a shot. Never understood that one. Magic fans may complain, but I view those late calls our way as just offsetting the bad calls earlier. But of course no Magic fan will notice or remember bad calls early, just the ones that "cost" them the game. At least tonight should be a much lower pressure game. I'm thinking we see a lot more bench performance since this game should be in hand early.

For once, at the end of the night, I think the Hornets got the better part of the calls last night. It hurts me to say, but I think it's true. But it was close, with some against us early and some for us late. I guess that's kind of how it goes when you call games so tight like they did last night. However, Orlando's mistake was to keep up the hard, physical defense up anyway. Nonetheless, I prefer it when they just let them play.

Those Orlando announcers were more annoying than the San Antonio and Boston ones. Some clips: "Who does Chris Paul remind you of?" - "Isiah Thomas" "I don't think so, Isiah never went 2 for 10." "We don't get to see New Orleans very often on television because they just aren't that exciting" [sic] They also repeatedly called fouls going the Hornets way as terrible calls and fouls not going the Magic way on the offensive end as terrible.

Chris Paul has never been accused of sexual harassment either, so that's another difference between him and Zeke. And I can't recall seeing the Orlando Magic on national television much this season. They must be boring to watch. I'm so glad I don't get to hear other team's announcers, because they'd probably piss me off too much. At least Bob and Gil share my bias.

The other teams announcers is pretty much all I ever hear. League Pass is great, but man, I think I've heard Bob and Gil four times all season? You can imagine my relief when I do get to hear them, no matter how bad the puns are.
