The Hornets played a rather uninspiring three quarters of basketball tonight, but the reserves came in and turned it into a blowout in the fourth quarter, thus ensuring a franchise-best fifth win on the road trip.

Half-assed notes for a half-assed performance...
- Final score was 106-77 ( recap | box score | standings ). The Hornets came out strong and it looked like we might win by a billion, but then we let the Heat chip away with some long bombs and cut the lead to four in the third quarter. Thankfully our reserves were able to turn up the D, and we outscored Miami 32-11 in the final frame to grab win number 52.
- Julian Wright was a big reason we were able to pull away in the fourth quarter. He played some great defense, both individual and help, got to the foul line a bunch of times, and was able to tear down a heap of rebounds and fire home some jams. He finished with 11 points, a career-high 9 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists and 3 steals in 19 minutes of action. He also avoided turning the ball over and didn't commit a single foul.
- One thing Julian needs to work on though is following through on his shot when he gets fouled. He got hit at the rim a couple of times tonight and changed his shot to a pass because of the contact. It cost him some free-throws. That said, I was impressed by the more direct route he was taking to the basket. He would see a gap tonight and just tear through it. Nice to see.
- Tyson Chandler was a beast tonight, hitting all ten of his field goals for 20 points and also adding 10 boards. He took a seat with about five minutes left in the game, and promptly hit himself in the face with a towel. CST were only too happy to show several replays of said incident.
- Chris Paul was nice. 14 points, 10 assists, 5 boards, 1 turnover. Thankfully, he didn't have to play in the fourth quarter -- yeah, he got those numbers in only 30 minutes -- which is the way it should be against a team like Miami.
- All 12 active guys got some burn tonight, and everyone got on the scoreboard. Ryan Bowen made sure of that when he hustled home a free-throw in the final minutes. In all, our bench contributed 33 points. Miami's bench had 32, led by 15 from something they were calling a Blake Ahearn.
- David West shot 8-of-17 for 22 points. Peja Stojakovic struggled early but knocked down a pair of triples in the fourth quarter. He finished with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting.
- Nice job on the boards tonight. Again it was a nice team effort, with a several guys helping to keep the glass clean. The Hornets finished with a 50-40 edge.
- Of course, all these numbers don't mean much. We were playing the Miami Heat after all. This is a team that gives 20 minutes of PT to chronic open dunk-misser Alexander Johnson.
- This has to be a mistake, right? The box score states that attendance was 19,122 for the game tonight. That can only be true if 15,000 of those people were invisible.
- In the house: George, Chad and Denise Shinn, along with Gary Chouest, all sitting down wind of the Hornets bench.
- 9:48 left in the third quarter and Chris Paul drives and kicks to Peja for the open three. Peja sinks it, giving Paul the 2000th assist of his career. Aw yeah. Bob and Gil noted that only two players in NBA history have racked up 2000 dimes faster than Chris, namely Oscar Robertson and Kevin Johnson.
- Play of the game? Loads to choose from. Tyson and JuJu both caught some funky lobs, but I'll go with West's drive and throw down on some unknown Heat player two minutes before halftime. That was vicious.
I'll leave the bullets there, because I have to hustle out to the airport to greet them boys back from one helluva road trip. If anyone wants to join us, get at me asap via email ( ron [at] hornets247 [dot] com ).
Hornets back at it on Friday at the Arena against the Knicks. Looking forward to it.

Great to see CP hit 2,000 assists so fast. If he keeps it up he may be in other elite company. His 9.3 ast/game career average is equal to that of Isiah Thomas, and in the neighborhood of J-Kidd and Oscar Robertson at 9.4 and 9.5, respectively. If you look at the all-time leaders in career assists, only Stockton at 10.5 and Magic at 11.2 averaged more. By the by, in only his third year, CP is already putting up 11.4 per game this year. Who knows what the future might hold.

I'm betting CP averages about 34 ast/game in 2010. And he better still be a Hornet then, because that's a LOT of assists per game. Like, twice as many assists as Miami had buckets the other night. I know we're supposed to have that killer instinct so close to the playoffs, and crush larynxes with our mad no-mercy skillz, but I really feel sorry for Captain Pat. Dude is a WAAAY better coach than heading a D League all star team, and he's about to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame in the year of his worst coaching record. Thats just taking the piss. I never liked Miami much as a team, but damnnit I'm rooting for the Captain to steer those kids to a division title next year.

You know we're good when we win by 29 and we call it a half-assed performance

Just got back from the airport. Six of us there. Me, some friends and a few guys from Hornets Report. It was a blast. Melvin Ely came out first, stopped, got out of his vehicle and posed for pictures with us. He even had his girl (who came to pick him up) take a picture so we could all be in it. Bowen came out after and he was cool enough to stop and sign stuff. Then Pargo drove out with Chris in the passenger seat. They pulled over and got out, and both of them posed for pictures with us and signed some things. Other than that we got a few honks and waves. I was surprised the guys stopped and seemed so appreciative that we were there to greet them, given that they'd just arrived back from a long road trip and probably couldn't wait to get home. All in all, it was a pretty cool night. I'm waiting on the pictures to be forwarded to me, and I'll probably put a post together about the experience then. Gotta go crash now.

"Takin' care of businessevery day.Takin' care of business that's what I say". That's what it may take to WIN the West........possibly 7Ws out of last 8games........We neeeeeeed at least 5Ws to insure home court inthe first round of the playoffs. Will the Spurs ever loose???? Yes, WHEN WE BEAT them in the playoffs.... We absolutely should beat NYKnicks at home and we need to let the Warriors know we are better...as well as the Jazzzz.....MinnTWolves should be a W also. Those Laker and Mav games may well tell us if we are really READY for the post season..........realistically it would show the association we are ready to make some BIG time noise if we win 3 of the 4 remaining games vs. the other playoff teams. Part of the reason I believe we are READY is the fact that CP3 is on OUR squad......we have a really good blend of other players that excell at different things(DWest being the best of the rest)... Pega's ability to put the 3point dagger in opposing teams hearts...TyChand is playing WAY ABOVE the rim.....between MoPet, Mr Wright, Pargo and Wells, our supporting cast role players can do a lot of damage..........that gets us to the factor that may well deciede just how far we advance on the NBA playoff calendar (April? May? or June????)?????Who and how well are Hilton and Bird Man going the BACK UP Tyson??????THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT QUESTION??????? GEAUX HORNETS.....and get at least 6,six,Six,SIX more regular season WINS!!!!!!

I don't know if it was Barron or not, but in the 1sthalf there was a Miami Heat player that had David West beaten twicein the low post with a good, strong baseline move. Then he, for no apparent reason, just stopped under the basket, allowing the Hornets to close in on him. One such an event led toa highly-contested missedshot, and the other led to a turnover. I was almost rooting for the kid to go up with the shot.

What time did the Hornets finally get home? I would of liked to have gone but there's just no way with work so early. It's great that some of them stopped. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

The flight got in at about 12:30am. It's tough to be out there with work looming the next morning; that's why I've skipped the airport thing a few times this season. I just had to be there though after that 5-1 trip.
