There isn't a player on Jazz that I don't like - except for maybe Harpring(untalented and uses aggression bordering on thugery to make up for it) and Okur(don't like his playing style), but they aren't like the Nuggets, who have two players in Kenyon Martin and Carmelo Anthony that I despise.(I watched both of their losses to Sacramento and Seattle and giggled my head off)
I love the clever play of Ronnie Brewer. I still have residual fondness for Andrei Kirilenko when he helped my fantasy team a ton a few years ago. Paul Millsap is an incredible story and everything I'd want in a backup - or even starting - big. Deron Williams is a joy to watch. Boozer, if not exciting, is easily appreciated for all the things he does. Their offense is amazing.
Now, with all that said, I hope we beat the living hell out of the Jazz, meet them in the playoffs and then send their team home. Just so I can read the comments on a CP3 for MVP article and not see half of them be Jazz fans whining about Deron Williams.
Game Preview
Matchup: Jazz(51-26) @ Hornets(54-22)
Off Efficiency: Jazz 111.2(1st), Hornets 109.2(4th)
Def Efficiency: Jazz 104.1(12th), Hornets 102.9(6th)
Blogger: My Utah Jazz
On the negative side, The Jazz are one of the few teams in the league with a better differential than the Hornets, scoring 7.1 more points per 100 posessions than they give up. The Hornets score 6.3 more points than they give up. Over the course of a season that's a pretty significant difference. The Jazz have crushed the Hornets twice this year by big margins.
On the positive side, the strength of schedule for the Jazz(win percentage of the teams they have played against all year) is only .495, while the Hornets opponents have a winning percentage of .510. That's not really enough to make up the difference, but it does make the difference only one made free throw over the course of a game. The Jazz have won 7 of 10. Hornets 9 of 10. The game is in New Orleans and the Jazz have a weak 16-22 road record and were beaten by 12 in the last meeting, which was in New Orleans.
Put those negatives and postives together and what do you get?
These teams are really well matched. Tonight is going to be a throwdown.
Injures: Ronnie Brewer has been day to day, but they hope he'll play tonight. The Hornets have no significant injuries.
Positional Analysis
PG: Deron Williams v Chris Paul
Advantage: Hornets
No one puts CP3 in the corner.
SG: Ronnie Brewer v Morris Peterson
Advantage: Jazz
Ronnie Brewer is a clever, athletic player who fits into the Jazz Offense beautifully. His baseline cuts are second to none, and I guarantee that if he plays we'll see at least one sneaky layup from behind the basket where he catches the entire Hornets defense by surprise. Morris Peterson fits into the Hornets offense pretty well too - but he has a much smaller impact overall. Brewer also plays the passing lanes with skill.
SF: Andrei Kirilenko v Peja Stojakovic
Advantage: Even
Andrei's defense isn't actually the type that will bother Peja much, but his help defense will harass the rest of the team pretty effectively. His all-around game is also pretty solid, with good passing and rebounding instincts. Peja will get his and probably out produce his opponent, but plan on seeing Kirilenko have at least a few great plays on the defensive end.
PF: Carlos Boozer v Sir Fluffy
Advantage: Even
Boozer actually has fewer offensive weapons in the post than David West does, but he has honed those weapons to a razor sharp edge. West is more versatile, but has to find an effective weapon before unleashing it. Boozer is a better rebounder, West is a better defender. Both have an absolutely deadly 17-18 foot jumpshot. Great battle.
C: Mehmet Okur v Tyson Chandler
Advantage: Hornets
Okur is only good when his three point shot is on. If it is, he's deadly. If it isn't, he's useless despite having a surprisingly effective post game that he doesn't like to use. Tyson always plays the same way - full of effective energy, but he'll be uncomfortable going out to the 3-point line to defend Okur. Still, I'd rather have Chandler.
Bench
Advantage: Jazz
The Jazz bench has been narrowed to four players:
- Paul Millsap, a rebounding, dunking fiend who is near impossible to keep off the glass
- Matt Harpring, a limited player with a nice midrange jumpshot who likes to push, shove, throw elbows and then flail around afterwards like he hadn't instigated it
- Kyle Korver, a dead-eye ranged shooter who can do little else, but does that one thing very, very well.
- CJ Miles a young slasher with a dangerous outside stroke.
The Hornets bench has also been narrowed to four players:
- Jannero Pargo - a streaky shooter with waterbug quickness and decent defensive ability.
- Bonzi Wells - a powerful guard good at muscling his way to easy buckets and steals. Also has a nice midrange fadeaway.
- Julian Wright - freakish giraffe calf who disrupts the defense, has a developing offensive game and generally makes you feel exhausted watching him.
- Chriltvin Elderstrong - A random big man selected from Melvin Ely, Chris Andersen and Hilton Armstrong. None are particularly effective. Right now it seems to be Hilton's turn. He's a decent rebounder, a terrible finisher, a good shot blocker, and a foul machine.
Hornets by 4. Enjoy the game.

I'm more excited for tonight's game than I was for the NCAA championship game. Chris Paul and Deron Williams are on such tears that this will be a clash of the titans. There are no two better PG's in the league. Both teams set themselves up for years to come with their respective floor generals. Prediction: Jazz 108, Hornets 105 Let's get it on!!!!

Chriltvin Elderstrong.... honestly Ryan, you need to warn someone before unleashing a name like that. I have people at work looking at me funny because I'm laughing so hard. They usually look at me funny for different reasons.

"No one puts CP3 in the corner." Classic. This one is going to be tough. I like the Hornets chances though. They played down to some poor opponents last week but then stepped it up against Golden State. It seems like they know when to turn up the energy. No matter the winner tonight though, I'm sure this will be a great game. Looking forward to a packed Hive.

Okur will be key. If he's hitting and forces Chandler out of the middle, it could be a long night.

The Hornets have a lot to play for, and based on their 1-2 (all home wins) battle this year, I saw Byron is going to get them pretty amped to protect homecourt.

Chriltvin Elderstrong looks like something from a Fantasy Novel. Of course, I'm a huge Sci Fi/Fantasy fan, and I am trying to write a Fantasy novel, so maybe that's not surprising.

I know, and I totally thought about that when I likened David West to Obi-Wan Kinobi in your previous post. In the last game we built a huge lead in the 1st QTR that we lived off of for the rest of the game. As I recall, both AK47 and Boozer were non-factors. I don't expect an offensive explosion from AK, but I do anticipate him being more active on the defensive end. Boozer will want to make us pay for a subpar outing last time. Again, I think this game comes down to defense. If we allow Utah to get uncontested shots from 3, we're dead. I also expect Williams to go after Paul early and try to get him into foul trouble, because the only way to beat Chris Paul is toforce him off the floor.

I hate Jazz fans, so i hope hornets win this by 50 and Paul drops 50 on Williams. Jazz fans are the most arrogent, stupid and homer fan base in basektball.

Okur's numbers dwarf those of Chandler over the last month. He is really really hot right now. I think whoever the home team is will win this match up 80% of the time at least. Sir Fluffy is the man.

I'm a Jazz fan, but first I want to say I have a lot of respect for the Hornets. From the job that Byron Scott has done this year to the phenomenal play of Chris Paul to the much improved play of David West and Tyson Chandler. But I wanted to address a couple of points you made. First, I think giving the edge to Chris Paul in the PG position is pretty ridiculous. At most it is even. In his career DWill is 7-2 against Chris Paul. In addition, Williams has outplayed every other top-notch point guard this year. This includes Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, and Baron Davis. Williams vs. Nash: 2-1 Williams vs. Paul: 2-1 Williams vs. Kidd(Dallas/New Jersey): 2-0 Williams vs. Billups: 2-0 Williams vs. Davis: 3-0 This is why I feel at best, you have to call this matchup even. DWill is a tough matchup for Chris Paul because of his size. He usually will post up early in the game to get Paul in foul trouble. The second point I wanted to make is that I don't think Chandler will even guard Okur because he will spend too much time out of the key guarding Memo's 3, which has been on fire recently. I think New Orleans needs to have David West guard Okur and have the taller and longer Chandler guard Boozer. Then again I don't get to watch every Hornets game like I do the Jazz so I might be wrong about this, it just makes more sense since Okur is a 3 point shooting Center. Good luck tonight and congratulations on a great season!

if you re-wrote the first 3 paragraphs and switched the teams, I'd totally agree. I don't fault you for giving PG edge to Paul, I'd give it to Williams if I made a comparison. I hope it's a good game but I'll take the Jazz and the over (-5, 210). And I love the anonymous comment. Wouldn't be a basketball blog without some flame comment!

Yeah sad to say but you guys lost like I predicted yesterday so all I gotta say is "how do you like dem apples?" Deron may not have had many points but either did CP but who had more assist?... D-Will and he got his team involved more....obviously. So just remember this... The Jazz will continue to wax that ass every time these teams meet and shit will never change as long as Chris Paul is running on that New Orleans Hard Wood. We have the best fans, the loudest stadium, and a better team numbers don't lie.

I love your passion for the Jazz, Anton, but you're not the most objective cat I've ever come across. Could it be that Deron got his teammates involved more, or was it just that his teammates were hitting their shots, while the Hornets couldn't hit anything? Since Chris averages more assists per game, does that mean he usually gets his teammates involved more than Deron? And if the Jazz are a better team, why do the Hornets have a better record? The numbers don't lie, right?

Whats the Jazz and Hornets season series? Yeah the Jazz are ahead 3-1. The Jazz are a better team when compared to the Hornets. Teams play different against other teams given many different aspects. one being location, time, match ups, stamina, etc. Obviously you never played basketball in high school or college like this Jazz fan. The Jazz are a better team when compared to the Hornets thats a fact. Deron did get his teammates involved more and thats why he is a better point guard and Chris didn't get his team involved. Also the Hornets weren't hitting there shots because there field goal percentage is lower then the Jazz and we were hitting ours. Im done wasting time here there is one last thing thats a fact and thats that the Jazz won, now you guys can make your excuses all you want its just adds to my point.
