Twas a rough one at the Arena tonight. The Hornets and Jazz both started hot out of the gate, each team shooting above fifty percent in the first quarter. It was all downhill from there though, as the sellout crowd endured both squads trying hard to suck less than the other. In the end, it was the Jazz that sucked least.
Win 55 and franchise history for the Hornets will just have to wait.

Quick and grumpy notes, because I'm tired and bobbleheadless...
- Final score was 77-66. Linkage: recap | box score | standings
- Some folks might say that both teams struggled offensively tonight because there was some great defense being played. You know, folks like Jeff. I don't really buy that. The defense was good, but not a-combined-143-points good.
The Jazz got a bunch of open looks from three -- shots they usually make -- but they couldn't knock them down. They finished 4-of-19 from deep. The Hornets looked like they'd never ran a pick and roll before, and Chris Paul had a woeful shooting night. Add to that a bunch of unforced turnovers by both teams, and some mighty shitty officiating which kept guys off the free-throw line, and you've got an ugly game. - The only guy who played real well tonight, on either team, was Mehmet Okur. He scored inside and out, dropping 22 points and collecting 17 boards. He was also the only Jazz player not to turn the ball over.
- Chris Paul struggled mightily. He was scoreless with 5 assists in the first quarter, which was fine. Then he managed just 4 points and 4 assists the rest of the way. I'm reluctant to say he still has some kind of mental block about playing against Deron Williams, especially since he got the better of the match-up last time they met. CP just didn't look right tonight though. I'd expect him to breathe fire and cremate the T-Wolves in Minnesota tomorrow night.
- Williams didn't have a great game either, but he certainly played better than Paul. He shot equally bad (2-of-11 for 4 points) and turned the ball over twice as much (6 fumbles), but his 16 assists were huge for Utah.
- By the way, this was only the second game all season that Chris was held to single digits in scoring and assists. The other time: February 4th, at Utah, when he finished with 6 and 6.
- With the win, the Jazz become the only Western Conference team with a winning record (3-1) against the Hornets this season. The Sacramento Kings can also finish with a winning record against the Hornets if they beat us next Tuesday.
- David West started hot offensively, hitting some tough shots over Carlos Boozer. Unfortunately, he forgot to guard Okur at the other end. The Jazz did a pretty good job of doubling down on West inside whenever he caught the ball, and their rotations to cover the swing were decent enough that we didn't get many open looks off it. West finished with 14 points (5-of-14 FGs), 7 boards, 4 assists and 4 turnovers.
- Boozer also had a forgettable night. His last couple games against the Hornets have actually been pretty poor. This time he finished with 10 points (5-of-14 FGs) and 6 rebounds. He seemed to get burned by the lousy officiating quite a bit, and looked pretty pissed when another call didn't go his way in the fourth.
- Some bright spots tonight: The bench actually looked good, Julian Wright and Hilton Armstrong in particular. JuJu's crazy intense D almost got us back into the game in the fourth quarter, while Hilton came up with some strong plays in the game, and held his ground well against Boozer and Paul Millsap.
- It's easy to blame the coach when things go wrong, so that's what I'll do: Byron Scott's substitutions were questionable tonight. Bringing in Mike James for Jannero Pargo in the fourth quarter made little sense, and I'm not sure why he didn't play Peja Stojakovic at all in the fourth quarter, when he was our best scorer on the night (7-of-15 shooting for 15 points) and has this tendency to be an absolute legend in the fourth quarter.
Sitting David West for Ryan Bowen after we'd just scored two points in six minutes was also a tiny bit strange. Bowen's not much of a scoring machine, you know. - Game recaps from other blogs linked here as I find them: At the Hive | Hornets Hype | My Utah Jazz | Basketball John | Frank Layden Admirers
I'll leave the bullets there.
The Spurs were inactive tonight so we only dropped a half-game on them, still lead them by one in the standings. As I'm typing this the Lakers are down 16 to the Blazers entering the fourth quarter, so hopefully they'll get slayed tonight too.
Hornets in Minneapolis tomorrow to try beat up on the T-Wolves. Hornets.com tells us that our guys won't have a shootaround ahead of that game. After shooting 17-of-58 (.293) from the field in the final three quarters tonight, perhaps they should reconsider.

The past participle of "slay" is "slain."

Well, at least the Lakers lost tonight to the Blazers. And with them being the only playoff team in the West with a better conference record than us, Friday's game becomes even more huge than it was. (We're up 2-1 head-to-head, but if they win, they tie it, sending it to Western Conference record as a tie-breaker, which they are 0.5 ahead now, and a victory against us would be brutal.)

The refs were shitty on both sides. Guys from both teams were hacking at each other and no fould were called. This game was just very very odd, it was like being in a twighlight zone. Chris Paul and Deron Williams looked more like Chris Quinn and Shammond Williams out there. Peja was dunking over people driving the line, but couldnt hit anything from deep. West and Boozer were non existant. The game seemd to fly by. It really felt like a 30 minute game not a 2 hour game. Just a very odd night, it was like a nightmare, you wake up the next morning and your wondering what the hell just happned. Anyways we need to pund Minnesota and regain some confidence. We also got lucky that the lakers lost so we still have some cushion on the first place lead.

I think we will look back at this game and say,"it was theBEGINNING OF THE ENDof our season"..... A season of great improvement BUT ending in disappointment......IF WE ONLY SCORE 67pts....CRAPPPPPP.....we are NOT an top level team......I bet all the OTHER CONTINDERS ARE LAUGHING TODAY............. I will only alter my assessment if and when we beat LA in LA!!!!!! Many Bee fans will NOT agree with what I now propose......START GAWEN DEANGELO WELLS NOW!!! Play him 34minutes a game AND take 5 to 8 of DWest's postups a game and GIVE THEM TO WELLS!!! What would this accomplish you ask.....DEVERSIFY the offense.....I noted when Bonzi was traded to the Hornets that a blogger said when the ball is passed into West it's like passing it into a BLACK HOLE.........I'll tell you one thing, if Bonzi's offense is him being told to go stand in the opposite corner as Pega, HE WILL NEVER HAVE ONE OF THOSE 4 to 6 offensive rebounding games>>>.......Bonzi's postup game FORCES the defense in andaway from the 3point line creating space for Pega's 3s!!!!!!! I'm tellin' yallllll BWell can really hirt teams when he is given 20 touches a game inside of 18feet from the rim. The only way for him to really beincluded in the offense is for West to sacrifice a little of his game to make us better......I'm tellin it right now you will be pleseantly surprized when BWELLS gives it up when those demanded DOUBLE-teams come.....and DWest will get it back FOR EASY DUNKS.......(note it's probably to late in the season for this to happen but Wells' playoff experience will only be a factor if his minutes are increased NOW)... I HOPE WE DON'T THINK WE HAVE HOME COURT SOWED UP........And I will be surprized if we are the #1seed!!!!!! I could be wrong, this game may be an aberration, and we may still play great and secure that #1seed. I have yet to form an openion about Pargo,,,,,,I do know BWells is much more of a threat when he is on the floor WITH CP# 'cause will pass the ball to Wells.....You may think my solution is simplistic,,,,,,,,,how did wells destroy the Spurs 2years ago??????BY GETTING THE BALL INSIDE THE PERIMETER where he can do the damage........Wells should average 18p, 7.5 r and 1.7steals + 3.5assists in 34minutes!!!!!!!! GIVE BonWell THE BALL!!!!!!! GEAUX GEAUX GEAUX HORNETS!!!!!!!

FirstI wanna say thanks to Portland. I wouldn't exactly say that Williams out-played Paul last night. He had the benifit of having the one non-sucking player on his team. I can bet that at least 10 of his 16 assists went to Okur. On the other hand, I would say that Paul out-sucked D-Will. I don't know who that Official is, but he was the black guy, #40. He has got be the most terrible official in the entire league. I'm not even sure he was watching this game. He single-handedly took away 8 points from the Hornets, and took away at least 2 possessions from the Jazz. At least the suck-a-tude was all the way around. **Update... his name is Leon Wood, #40. I hope you're reading this Leon, because you are horrible. That was the most pitiful excuse for officiating that I've seen in a long time.At least your mind-boggling horrible calls didn't just go one way. Seriously, were you even watching the game? Is your last nameactually Donehey? You better believe I'm gonna remember you.**

The worst part is that with this loss, instead of having a nice buffer on the conference, we perilously stand 2.5 games out of SIXTH place. Additionally, should we fall into a tie somehow with the Jazz, they have the tie-breaker over us. (Currently, the only Western team that can say this.) The only consolation is that the Lakers have inexplicably lost to the Bobcats, Grizzlies, and the Blazers in the past two weeks. As an aside, if CP can bounce back strong tonight, he rejuvenates his MVP candidacy as Lebron's and Kobe's teams have struggled of late, with their teams averaging 5-5 over the last ten, while the Hornets are 8-2 over the same stretch. Everyone has a bad game, but letting your team skid in a tight run to the playoffs is not MVP material.

Then again, the Spurs, who are the anointed ones, also have a 64-90 loss to the Jazz and no one's saying that was the end of their season. Hornets are 10-2 in the last 12, both of their losses coming to playoff teams. The Lakers are def. worse off in that regard. Now if they lose at Minnesota, it's a different story. The NBATV guys didn't have any doomsaying on the highlights, just talked about what the Jazz need to do to keep home court in the playoffs. They seemed to acknowledge that everyone drops a stinker now and then, and breezed right by it.

I agree, I laughed out loud at the dunk. Then used fast forward on my TIVO to watch most of the second half of the game. I think the fans caught more passes in that game than shooters did.

Can anyone figure out why Peja could hit everything from inside the arc this game and couldn't buy a 3? (Despite keeping his streak alive on 1-7 shooting...)

lol, i didn't watch the game, but mo had decent game, shooting 4-9 for 9 points - more than CP who had 4?!!! and he only played 19 minutes? why? and is ron right, did peja not play the fourth? why? were we down by 20 or something? mike james playing in a crucial game, when he hardly gets burn at all? ryan bowen playing in a crucial game after he hasn't played in weeks? while peja doesn't play in the fourth and mo plays less than 20 minutes? yah, we got outcoached. ryan frikken bowen? in a game where our starters are struggling to score?!!!

btw utah isn't a great defensive team. there i said it. which makes this loss even more weird. minny isn't an easy win after a back to back either! the players that play for minnesota have pride... why you ask? cuz the ghost of kevin garnett wouldn't have it any other way. the dude will haunt them if they don't try hard every game. i'm serious about that one.
