I just got back from watching a near-flawless performance by our New Orleans Hornets in Game 2 of the NBA Playoffs. They came out breathing fire in the first quarter and dumped 39 points on the freshly adjusted Mavericks. A nice start indeed, but a basketball game is made up of four of those period thingys, and not even the NBA's computers could remember the last time the Hornets had put together 48 minutes of great basketball. Surely the fantasticness couldn't last all game.
But yes, it did. The Hornets kept the pedal to the metal and refused to let Dallas make any kind of run to get back in it, maintaining a double-digit lead all through the second half, and building the advantage as high 28 points in the fourth quarter. The 17,855 fans in attendance were prepared for a let down after that exhilarating finish to Game 1 on Saturday, but instead they were treated to another four quarters of dominance by the home team.

Notes from the best place on earth...
- Final score was 127-103. Linkage: recap | box score
- The big question coming ahead of Game 2: how would the Mavericks adjust to prevent Chris Paul going off like he did in Game 1?
Well, they tried a few different things. They started out with Jason Kidd guarding him, and hedged hard with Erick Dampier and Dirk Nowitzki on the Hornets' pick and rolls. That didn't work too good, as Chris was able to either lob a pass to our rolling bigs, split the double team himself, or fire it out to the wing for the hockey assist to those same rolling bigs.
So next Dallas tries single coverage on CP with a bigger body, having Josh Howard pick him up in the backcourt. This gets the ball out of Paul's hands for a while, but now Jason Kidd is guarding Peja Stojakovic and that doesn't have a happy ending for Dallas.
How about Jason Terry then? He comes off the bench and starts shadowing CP all over the floor, getting help from Brandon Bass to set traps in the backcourt. This doesn't work great either, as Chris manages to find David West at center court easily to break the press, then with Peja, Pargo and Peterson all making their deep looks, the Mavs halfcourt defense is spread wide enough to open up things for West inside.
And that was just the first quarter. As the game progressed, the Mavs would try some of the same defensive mix to try limit Paul, and then some new stuff, like an Eddie Jones headlock for example. Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George and Antoine Wright would all take turns guarding Chris, too, but it didn't make a difference. If they played solid D and forced Paul to give the ball up, another Hornet would burn them. New Orleans had every weapon locked, loaded and pointed directly at the target tonight. All the Mavs could do was pick one to die by.
- Chris Paul finished the game with 32 points (10-16 FGs), 17 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 turnovers. How about that for an encore to his crazy-good Playoff debut? He played a really smart game tonight, recognizing the different ways the Mavs were trying to guard him and choosing the perfect response every time. Quite simply, dude was legendary.
- As a team, the Hornets shot 60.8% for the game. For the game! Has that ever happened in the Playoffs before?
There will probably be a lot of Mavs fans saying that the Hornets were just on fire, kinda like the Warriors last season. I'll agree with that to an extent, because guys like Mo Pete and Jannero Pargo were nailing shots that they often brick. However, methinks the Hornets great spacing and excellent ball movement also had a lot to do with the high shooting percentage. David West in particular seemed to get a bunch of wide open looks because the Mavs were sending big men out to help on CP. The Hornets also ran the ball pretty good, getting 29 points on the break compared to 13 for the Mavs. That didn't hurt the shooting percentage. - Jason Kidd: 7 points (3-of-10 FGs), 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 turnover.
- Gotta give much credit to Jannero Pargo again for keeping Jason Terry under wraps. Terry was shooting the ball well tonight, but could only squeeze up 8 shots in 31 minutes, thanks to Pargo sticking closer than a Siamese twin. Unlike Game 1, Pargo also had a fine game at the offensive end, too, contributing 10 points and 4 assists. One of those dimes was that great lead pass to Chris at the end of the first quarter, which CP turned into a bucket before 1.8 seconds had evaporated off the clock.
- Peja Stojakovic had the long bombs dropping. He shot 5-of-7 from deep, making them over multiple defenders or none at all. He also did a pretty nice job defending Josh Howard, who the Mavs were trying to get going early, but finished the game with just 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting. Peja had 22 on 8-of-13 shooting.
- David West and Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 apiece tonight, with Zee German earning almost half of his at the free throw line. West got a lot of open jumpers in the first half thanks to the defensive attention on Paul, and made the most of mismatches down low to get some buckets inside. In the second half, Weezy attempted just six shots but made four of them, including that jab-step pull-up three over Nowitzki with four minutes left in the ballgame. That shot rocked my world.
- I could have sworn that the Hornets got every defensive board out there tonight, but somehow the Mavs ended up with a 38-31 rebounding advantage, including a 10-4 edge on the offensive glass.
- Tyson Chandler delivered another solid performance, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. He needs to be careful though after picking up half a double technical for jawing with Erick Dampier early in the third. That's the second Playoff T for Chandler, and apparently five more will earn him a one-game suspension. Sure, the Hornets might not last long enough for him to pick up five more, but you never know how far we can stretch this magical season. Better safe than sorry.
- Erick Dampier is not very good at this basketball thing. He did have 6 points and 6 boards in just 16 minutes tonight, but I'm guessing his time was so short because he couldn't defend the pick and roll to save his life. He also botched an open layup in the fourth quarter, and fouled Chris Paul on a jumper (which went in) about a minute later.
- Brandon Bass deservedly got those minutes left vacant by Dampier. The former Hornet was about the only guy giving Nowitzki significant help out there tonight, going 5-of-5 from the field and 9-of-9 from the line for 19 points and 8 rebounds. Dude should add the letters "da" to the middle of his last name.
- How about Hilton Armstrong tonight? He got 20 minutes of burn thanks to Tyson's foul trouble, and the kid did pretty good out there. He was aggressive offensively, drawing seven fouls on the Mavericks. He also blocked a couple shots and displayed some nice composure in the paint, twice finishing plays when he was fouled. Oh, and let's not forget him diving out of bounds to save a rebound to Paul late in the third quarter. That led to a fast break triple by Peja.
- Also strong off the bench was Bonzi Wells, who did his usual bit of everything: 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.
- The Honeybees wore orange outfits during the first half tonight. I hadn't seen that before, and I'm not sure why they went with it, but me definitely likey.
- At the top of this post I said that the Hornets played a near-flawless game tonight. Offensively, I couldn't have asked for anything more, but there's definite room for improvement at the the other end. After all, the Mavs did score 103 points tonight, up from 92 points in Game 1. We allowed them to shoot 47.1 percent from the floor and they nailed 7-of-14 from deep. They also got to the line 39 times, after we gave them 38 free throws on Saturday.
One thing we need to work on is defending the baseline. The Mavs seemed to get by our guys down there a few times tonight, particularly in the second quarter when they ran pick and rolls on the wing and ended up with easy buckets. The double-teams on Nowitzki were also a step slow for most of the night. By the time the help got there, Dirk was already in the paint and by then the best we could do was foul. I'd also like to see our guys closing out a little better on the shooters. A lot of the Mavs' three-point misses were wide open looks that wouldn't go down. I'm not sure we'll continue to be so lucky.
Anyways, methinks I'll leave it about there. Lots more I could write about such a fine performance, but I'll let you guys fill in the blanks as I kick back and enjoy a victory beer from my "Dallas Sucks" koozie (thanks, YoungFella).
Next up, the series shifts to Dallas for Game 3 on Friday. The Hornets have this whole Playoff thing figured out at home, now let's see how it goes on the road.

Ah the road... Such a magical, mystical place. The site of drug-addled epiphany (thanks Mr Keroac) or equally hallucinogenic carnivals (Wizard of Oz style). And while there is indeed no place like home, I get the feeling that the emphatic nature of these last two will have dispelled any nerves or hesitation from the boys in teal. These kids fouund themselves out there on New Orleans arena in the past two games, and methinks they aren't gonna forget who they are bing a mere few hours up the road. The road is harsh, but this is a team now,and when you're travelling with friends you can have the best time of your life. Like the movies. Harold and Kumar, about 73 starring Owen Wilson. Y'know, where you have a blast and come back better dudes. That's what this one will be. All we have to do is have the jelly-wrestling sorority party ready for their glorious homecoming.

What an incredible performance by CP3... Truly a superstar in the making. If we can take Game 3, then there is no reason to believe we can't close it out in 4 or 5.

What an incredible game! Yelled myself hoarse. I think those orange and pink Honeybee costumes sucked. The design was cute but think about it... The Hornets have the best colors in the NBA... teal, purple and gold. Why can't they fly our colors? It's the playoffs, for crying out loud! Their costumes are some of the most boring in the league. Watched TNT's recap of the game and "Sir" Charles Barkley said something that rubbed me the wrong way. He said that what Dallas needs to do to stop CP3 is "hit him hard".

I"ve seen 100s of playoff games in 50years watching the NBA,and I can't think of ANY time I witnessed such of aTHING as these first two performances by our littlest Bee, Chris C BEE 3 Paul. Not Isiah, not Bob Cousey, not PistolPet, not Stockton, NOT MAGIC, and even though he scored more points, not even M J. In 80 minutes of basketball, CP3 has played only 3 bad minutes (when he turned the ball over those three times) in the other 77min. he has 1, one, ONE turnover...WOW WOW WOW. It's not like he has spent most of the time just dribbling the ball unguarded out at the center court....Ron, as you accurately pointed out, doubles, tripples, full court half court...it doesn't matter, CP3 makes the RIGHT DECISION 96% of the TIME....Paul has handled the ball about 100times so far in these playoffs... with 4 turnsitovers.....and 27ASSISTS....and throw is some really good D...and 67points....Is JKidd even playing in this serries???? Only 2 things scare me....one, the Mavs will shoot better in Dallas..and 2, David Bass, the most under rated big I know in these playoffs!!!!!!! Would someone put your body on him and keep him away from the rim....and the guy can shoot out to 15feet....Watch out for him NEXT GAME...jkid may grow up to Jason Kidd and play better at home. If not, mark the "BLANK STARE" cubanis going to be crying all the way to the bank where he is going to have to put a lot more money to pay the rest of jkid's salary....I've nothing against Mr. Kidd but he has obviously lost some of his game and now is on the down side of his career. Let's address the play of the "rest" os opur team....Pargo more great D and some good shooting in the first half, MoPet, solid D and great offense, Bonzi and Tyson need to stop the-silly-foul-thing...but both gave quality minutes when in the game (Tyson is dominating the paint,to bad that reverse dunk failed), and our CAUCASIAN shooter was sensational..those daggers at the right time(how about Bonzi's steal leading to Peja's three)...the bigggggggest surprise of the night,Hilton's play..blocking a sure 2 once and solid overall game.........and DWeast-the-best-mid-range-shooter-in-the-NBA PERIOD! ! ! ...and alsohe is playing the D on Mr Dallas Dirk...with alittle help from his friends...... Again we need to give PROPS KUDOS and CHEERS to Coach Scott for preparing us to play...I have never seen such of a young inexperienced team play back to back games like this.....I know Peja and Wells have some experience, but the rest of the teamWOWWOWWOW. GEAUX BeeeeeSSSS get the remaining 14 games! ! !

Just checked out Yahoo's +/- tallies for the game last night. Dirk "led" the Mavs with a -27 followed by Terry with a -22 and Kidd with a -17. I think these are mostly weighted by the amount of time that they spent on the floor (35, 30, 30), but Howard and Bass didn't have numbers this high and they spent 30 minutes apiece. Bass is definitely the Mavs best player in this series. Dirk's scoring is being nullified by West on the other end. DWeezy finished +29 when he was on the floor last night. Incredible.

Whatever adjustments AJ made prior to this game, um, he might wanna try something different. Those adjustments didn't work too good. I think his new adjustments should involve a Marine RECON sniper or an M1A1 Abrams Tank. You guys think Dallas would like to have Devon Harris back now? The kid has quicks and can draw a charge, as evidenced in playoff years past. But he's in New Jersey. Jason Kidd looked like he was running through 8" of maple syrup last night. One adjustment that I believe Avery needs to make is for Dirk to play the 5, but use him kinda like they use Mehmet Okur in Utah. Another is to put Ba(da)ss at the 4. He showed last night that he's a matchup problem for anyone, an adequate help defender, and can actually guard David West. Dampier just doesn't have enough quickness to help on the pick and roll, and not enough athletic ability to keep up with Tyson on the break or battling for rebounding position. My player of the night not named Chris Paul has to go to Hilton Armstrong. Man, did he pick the right time to not suck. He looked aggressive, assertive, and confident. Thats really all that it takes for the kid. He just has to have the right attitude, the right approach to each game, and come in with an elevated confidence level.

All we need to do is win one on the road, and we can seal this thing up in 5. That is, unless they continue to surprise me like they've done all year and sweep. If that happened Iwould be surprised, but at the same time I wouldn't. Dallas is starting to look shell-shocked. A quick start to game 3 could get the ball rolling.....

Are the hornets allowed to change their active roster? They had Andersen and Ely inactive and thats probably not the best thing for a possible round two matchup against the spurs.

So Chris Paul continues to set records. Only the 8th in NBA history to open up with back to back +30 point and +10 assist games, and the first to ever do it as a playoff debut. I would imagine this elite 8 list Paul joined last night will shrink greatly if he can do it a 3rd time in a row. We are all watching history get made. Over and over again. What the hell is going to happen when he fully matures? I'd argue he hasn't hit his maximum potential yet. Can you imagine performances like the past 2 nights all year long and then him turning it up a notch in the 2009 playoffs?

I'm a Mavs fan but what the hornets are doing is just amazing. CP3 is a top-3 PG and West would be a superstar if he was in a bigger city. I can't wait to see the Hornets play the Jazz in the conference Finals

@T: the NBA has changed its rule on inactive rosters.Actually, Ely was active and Butler inactive last game. I'm supposing Byron anticipated if they got into foul trouble or had problems defending, it would come against Terry/Stack/Howard, and not Dampier/Dirk/Bass, and so elected to activate Butler. People have been talking how the Hornets haven't won in Dallas in 9 or 10 years, but what hasn't been mentioned lately is that the Hornets had the 2nd best road record in the West (Lakers were 1st). Based on what we've seen this season, I'd be shocked it they couldn't steal one in Dallas.

i watched the game from home on tues. and what a game it was (untill the 4th quarter when TNT decided the orlando game was better viewing and then put the last 5 min. back on for us. what a bunch of jerks). anyway did anyone get the feeling that charles barkley hates the hornets? pre game talking all kinds of shit about cp, half time making a hundred different excuses why the mavs were losing and post game trying not to swallow the bad taste in his mouth because having both feet in it. they all need to get a grip and admit the hornet are an allaround good "TEAM" they all showed up on tues. and they all played a great game. the world knows we have something here. I'm loving this basketball thing, it's a new sport in my eyes and it keeps getting better.

This game was so much fun to watch. I'm not a fan of either of these teams, but both teams manage to really step up in game time. Let me be the first to say it, although my vote for MVP goes to Kobe, that Chris Paul will earn at least two MVP awards in his career. If Steve Nash was able to get 2, CP3 deserves at least three. Good luck the rest of the way.

TNT's highlights were mad hating, too. They had the game on for about a minute, and every single headline was "Can the Mavs bounce back?" or "The Mavs are down 2-0" or some garbage like that. I looked at mW right after and said, "Am I crazy or did we never even hear the word Hornet?"

Got to post twice...cause I saw Bonzi's dad today....and he tells me that his son is very, very, very happy to be in New Orleans! ! ! ! Bonzi is especilly impressed with West and Chris Paul... Mr Wells agrees with me that CP3 is the best player in the playoffs so far........ I said to Gawen, I had hoped Bonzi would get more minutes in these playoffs...to which he said, "O no Bonzi is happy to contribute and he feels he has up to this point" adding "Dallas has tried to double Bonzi and that has helped his team...even when they have taken the ball out of Bonzi's hands".....Gawen says he will be in NewOrl when the Hornets return to play again..... Food for thought......BWells scored 45point in the playoffs in allas about 5 years ago.....He once had 18p 14r and another time went 18 and 7 also in the playoffs.....If we are having trouble scoring, I suggest they give the ball to Bonzi and give him the side to work. They can only double so many players. Hope that is in the second round GEAUX 14 more!

It's not just the Bonz that wants to play in New Orleans. When CP3 gives you that many touches and the team is in synch and wins, everybody wants to play for the team. Special thanks to Milwaukee, Atlanta, and Utah for passing on this special kid. I know I'm party pooping as usual, but remember, this is supposed to happen statistically. Now the Hornets need to win on the road to solidify some extra confidence for a potential late postseason run. And Ron, you need to stop using 'methinks'. That's my word. Hehe.

Snoop Jackson brought up a good point in his article about the Hornets, Bonzi has killed the Spurs in the Playoffs before. I know thats getting ahead of things, but still fun to think about... @muncie: Great to hear that Bonzi is very happy to be in the NO. Great exclusive!
