The Mavericks showed up to play tonight. Whether they were energized by their home crowd, or just desperate not to go down 0-3, they came out aggressive from the start on both ends of the floor, and that made all the difference.
Our Hornets took the Mavs' first punch pretty well, bouncing back from an 11-point first quarter deficit to take a three point lead midway through the second thanks to some nice bench play. It wouldn't last though, as the Mavs kept pounding the paint and running the ball, getting easy points from free throws and fast breaks. The Hornets kept the game from getting completely out of hand in the second half behind some Jannero Pargo heroics, and managed to cut the Mavs 17-point lead down to 7 with two minutes left in the fourth. Then Jason Terry knocked in a dagger three and it was all over.
There will be no sweep. Now we've got a series.

Notes...
- Final score was 97-87. Linkage: recap | box score
- As stated, the Mavs aggressiveness was the big difference tonight. They were much more physical guarding Chris Paul, and they started Jason Terry in the backcourt so they could have a quicker guy on him from the start. Terry was able to get under the screens and Chris couldn't make him pay, not having his jump shot working and getting his path to the lane blocked by bigs like Dampier, Nowitzki and Bass hedging much better than they did in New Orleans. CP finished the game with 16 points on just 4-of-18 shooting, adding 10 assists.
- Also struggling mightily tonight was our other All-Star: David West. He just couldn't drop a J from the start, and when that's not working for him he doesn't get those some opportunities off the dribble. When he did manage to get in the paint, Dallas crowded him pretty good and forced him to either give it up or try a tough shot. West finished with 14 points on 6-of-20 shooting, while adding 9 boards.
- Our rebounding was absolutely horrible in this game. I'd actually go so far as to say that the Hornets poor board work was the biggest reason for the loss tonight. The final rebounding totals were 52-42 in favor of Dallas, and I'm guessing they held a big edge in second chance points, too. There were numerous plays where the Mavs simply outworked our guys to track down an offensive rebound, or sometimes even two on one trip. They just seemed to want it more.
- Great game by Dirk Nowitzki: 32 points, 11-of-20 shooting, 19 rebounds and 6 assists. That was a man-sized game he delivered when his team really needed it.
That said, I found it very hard to respect him tonight. He flopped at least three times in the game, including twice where West caught him on the wrist as he was following through on his jumper.
How the hell does a wrist-tap land you on your ass, Dirk?
I don't think Nowitzki's a soft player by any means -- soft doesn't get you 19 rebounds after all -- but it's easy to see how he gets such a reputation when he reacts to light contact like he was tackled by a rhino.
- Jason Terry is probably my favorite Maverick. He never seems to get down on himself and just keeps plugging away. Tonight he got that start and gave Avery Johnson excellent play on both ends of the floor, defending Chris Paul well while hitting some big shots on offense. He finished with 22 points (8-18 FG's) and 6 assists.
- Jason Kidd set the tone for Dallas in this one, playing much more assertively from the tip, and making life much tougher for Chris Paul thanks to his constant post-ups. He didn't score much (8pts, 3-6 FG's), but he definitely made the Hornets pay more attention to him offensively, and that opened things up for his teammates. Kidd also finished with 11 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
- The improved defense and rebounding by the Mavs allowed them to get out and run much more than they did in New Orleans. They held a 23-4 edge in fast break points.
- Of course, I should note that the Mavs' improved defense didn't help their offense all that much, since their 97 points tonight were 6 fewer than what they scored in New Orleans on Tuesday.
- Jannero Pargo was the only Hornet who had it working offensively tonight. He helped bring us back from that early deficit by scoring 10 points in the first half, then just went off in the second half when nobody else on the team could score the ball consistently. JP was hitting from all angles, knocking down threes, draining pull-ups, flipping in reverse lay-ups, sinking baseline turnaround fadeaways... just an incredible one-man offensive assault. He was single-handedly keeping the Hornets alive in the second half.
When it was all said and done, Pargo had dropped 30 points in 32 minutes, shooting 12-of-20 from the field and 4-of-7 from deep. - When Pargo was going off, it seemed like our other guys were just standing around and waiting for him to bail us out. I caught that happening a few times. Very little movement off the ball, no picks set on the weak side, nothing like that. It was a lot like watching the Cavaliers.
(Yes, I did just compare Jannero Pargo to LeBron James. I'm sorry.) - Beyond Pargo, our bench play was decent tonight. I thought Hilton Armstrong came in and gave us some solid minutes after Tyson got in early foul trouble. Hilton didn't score, but he made some aggressive moves to the basket and grabbed 6 boards in 12 minutes. Not bad.
Bonzi Wells also gave us some decent minutes, but nothing too special. We went to him in the post numerous times in the second quarter, but the Mavs weren't liking that and did all they could to make that entry pass difficult, or else they'd send a double team after the catch. - Foul trouble plagued the Hornets again. After giving up 38 and then 39 free throws in the first two games, we gave up 38 again tonight. In the third quarter, we fouled five times within the first three and a half minutes, getting into the penalty by the 8:43 mark. Ridiculous.
Tyson Chandler picked up two fouls within the first three minutes of the game, and that set the tone for him for the night, taking his edge off. He'd finish with 4 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes. - I'm not going to complain too much about the officiating tonight. Sure there were a lot of bad calls, but the Hornets can't worry about things they can't control. If we hadn't given up so many offensive rebounds, or maybe if we'd come out and matched the Mavs' intensity, or if Chris Paul and David West had been able to hit even sixty percent of the open looks they got tonigh, or if we'd got back better in transition to limit fast breaks... if we'd done all that and still lost, then maybe I'd bitch about the referees screwing us over. As it is, I don't think I can do that.
- Chris Paul had zero steals tonight. It's the first time all season he has finished a game without a single steal.
- About that play by Erick Dampier in the final minute of the game: that was a cheap shot, completely uncalled for. The game's over, your team has won, and you blatantly shove a guy half your size out of bounds? I don't get that.
And the worst thing about it all? Tyson Chandler got baited in and picked up a technical: his third in three games. Like I stated here before, seven technicals in the Playoffs gets you an automatic one-game suspension, so Tyson needs to start keeping himself in check if he wants to be part of a deep run. - Jerry Stackhouse, fresh off his verbal assault on Byron Scott, did not start tonight, played just seven minutes for Dallas, missed both field goal attempts and saw his team get outscored by 8 points while he was on the floor. Oh, and he also got tea-bagged by Julian Wright early in the second quarter. Great game, Jerry. Keep up the good work.
Okay, so the Hornets' losing streak in Dallas continues. What are we at? 14 games now? 26 years?
Whatever. I'm feeling good about the Hornets chances in Game 4. Think of everything that went wrong for us tonight: the foul trouble, the horrible shooting, the piss-poor rebounding, Chris Paul and David West completely off their games, Dirk Nowitzki going nuts for 32 and 19, Jason Terry and Jason Kidd stepping it up, a very hostile crowd, and what the hell, let's even throw in the lousy officiating while we're at it. All that going against us, and we were still right there in the dying minutes with a chance to win it. We end up losing, by just ten points. So what? We beat the Mavs by 12 and 24 on our home floor.
Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about Game 4, and then the Hornets will be back in New Orleans next week, ready to eliminate and advance.

Erick the Viking is such a neadrathal f#&*face. That was a totally calculated "don't come in my house next game either" kinda move, and to me that epitomises the difference between these two teams. CP and DWeezy complain and get frustrated because they are in the moment and want to win the game. The Mavs are way more calculating than that, and know how to milk a foul (hello! flopsy Dirk) and just be plainnasty about it.That is what I think most commentators are talking about with the 'experience' tag. To me it isn't experience but bordering on playing below the belt. If the Mavs wanna win like that, they can have it. We got totally outplayed tonight, were on the ropes almost from start to finishand the fact that this shit is still carryingon - especially when the game is decided - makes me have so little respect for the 'experience' of this team we're playing. That being said, I'mso mad at Tyson for taking the bait and getting another tech. Damnnit boy, we CAN'T start Hilton in the future rounds. But big ups to Jannero for fronting up to support CP. And I don't hate all the Mavs. Like Ron said, JET is an admirableprofessional. I'd also say JKidd was a huge presence in the game by playing hard, not talking crap or playing cheap. And although Bass wasn't as much a factor this game, I'mloving howthat kid has stepped up his game. We won't shoot as bad next game, and hopefully we can suck up the physical play and dominate the glass too. No need to get down. But obviously a need to vent. So there you go...

Dont be too down on Jerry... he's a vet who had his ring stolen in 06. He's only playing poorly because he recently reaggrivated his groin... he was playing so well before that.... Don't expect to win the next game the Mavs are just deadly at home. This ones probably going to 7.

oh yeah if the mavs lose the series the current core is gonna blow. I only want to keep Terry, Wunderkind, Kidd, and Bass. Def. get rid of Stack, Damp, Juwan, Jones. Howard needs to proove himself NOW.

Again, I opted to not watch the game, but I saw some at a restaurant, which I was somewhat disgusted to watch. I didn't want to appear rude during dinner by staring at the TV, but on the offensive end, there was alot of body contact no calls. But yeah, all in all terrible game I suppose. This is where the media interjects 'playoff experience' all up in us, so we need to really step up in big D and at least put up a fight next game. Good job to the Mavericks. This puts more pressure than probably expected on the bees. Oh, and dammit Ceiling Fan Repair Man. Emotion is good. Being overly liberal displaying it is not. There's no longer speculation: this will be a problem given a long playoff run. Part of the learning process, yes, but you've got to be a more intelligent player than that.

David Stern thinks we are idiots....alls he cares about is his ratings thing. I' NOT a FOOL, the real final score was 38 to 13 and the IMBECILES that call themselves TV commentators never mentioned how all the close calls went to the White boy's team.. I am sick and tired of the Larry Bird(O it's now any white guy that has game, A la Steve Nash, and there was a time that the fools in the media thought Christian Laghtner was a savior, this syndrome, this ratings SYNDROME...)AnD THAT'S WHY WE GOT RIPPED BY THE REFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes the real score was, Dirk flop on the floor and get to the line...Josh the weed Howard living at the line.........Jkid leaving the 3 point line WAY early on a missed freethrow, real NBA fans know that no player can cross the 3point line before the ball is released,.......Dirk run over CP3 and get to shoot 2 frees...If the David Stern(head of officials) mentality coutinues the rest of this series...WE ARE TOAST...we will loose in 6, six,SIX GAMES,,,,that;s right. In 3 games the Mavs have shot 113 FREETHROWS yes 113! ! ! ! ! ! ! I about crapped watching the game.....but I must agree with those who say we played crappy....ALL but Pargo...in the sec half, did we think Pargo could outscore the whole Mav team?.......Any and everyone has a bad shooting game now and then, but being out hustled for rebounds I can't understand...come on Bonzi...while you were on the floor for 22minutes, Dirk got about 10 rebounds and you got one...and Tyson if that's all the game you are going to bring, you might as well stay in the hotel.... Am I the only fan who notices that Pargo won't pass Wells the ball...when bonzi is down near the paint. Bonzi can help us IF he is really part of the offense...unlike West, Wells will pass the ball when double-teamed. Wiil we bounce back? I have my doubts....My guess is we will win one more game in this series.........

@muncie - No! Don't lose your huge Hornet heart! Whenever I find myself getting really bummed about a loss or a lousy game you come out with enthusiasm and show - no, HAMMER on - the upside, and I start to think it isn't so bad and we can pull it out. Even if every call goes against us for the remainder of the playoffs, this team will make the semis at least. And Ron's observations were true. We were awful on offense and lethargic on defense and we were still within 7 with 2min to play. Dallas left it all out there. That makes me believe we can bridge that gap again. Even in Dallas. Geax BEES.

David had the worst game I've seen him play. In addition to missed open looks, he had lazy passing and rebounding on more than a few occasions. I think he let the refereeing distract him again. I know it distracted me! I don't have as much of an issue with 38 fouls for Dallas as I do with only 13 for the Hornets. From what I saw, the Hornets drove to the basket early and drew a lot of contact, but were givenfew calls. We missed a lot of these shots, but that happens when you are hacked or expect to get hacked. On the other hand, Dallas seemed to get a lot of their fouls away from the basket or on loose balls. If the refs won't acknowledge the contact, it only makes sense to stay outside and shoot jumpers. The standards for perimeter contact seemed to be a lot tighter on the Hornets as well. If the refs call every reach, then its tough to get a steal... In addition to West getting hammered inside all night, Ihavefour nominees for worst blown call (or no call): Hilton Armstrongon Jason Kidd for #3 at the end of the first,Terry clearing out Janaerowith a charge/elbow combo in the 2nd for no call, Dirk'smulit-step falling-down rhino charge into Chris at the end which was called asa block, and (to be fair) Chris pushing Dirk down from behind in the 1st just like Erick did to him late. Lucky that wasn't a flagrant.... I would love it if you wonderful statistics gurus could check these for me: What percentage of drives IN THE PAINTfor each team thatdid not end in a made basketended up beingawardedfree throws? How did the number of loose ball fouls compare?

Man, I was worried that Westicles wouldn't even break 10pts. Anyone know the last time David West didn't score in double figures....... thats right, the first game in Dallas thisseason back on December 14th. I'm not saying, I'm just saying. You know, I hate to throw out the "lack ofplayoff experience" card, so thats exactly what I'm gonna do.These Hornets are young, and have never played a ROAD playoff game together before. CP said before game 1 that it was like the NCAA tournament. Well yes and no... andone of the biggest differences is that the NCAA tourney is played atneutral sites. The Hornets didn't have to worry about their relative lack of experience here in New Orleans, because they knew their crowd would be behind them. Different story inBig-D. We had no ideawhat kind of intensity they would bring, and were really taken aback when they sustained that intensity through 48 minutes. I can really only think of one lull for the Mavs, and that was in the 2nd quarterwhen Jerry Shithouse was on the floor. But even with that sustained DAL intensity, the by-quarter scoring differential wasn't too bad (-7, E, -4 and +1). If this were a regular season game, i'd actually be ok with this loss, but its the playoffs so its different. I have to also admit, I'm still getting used to this playoff thing from a fan perspective. So, congrats Hornets. Younow know what it feels like to play in someone else's house in the playoffs. Don't expectDallas to back down in Game 4. You know what kind of intensity they are going to bring. Now match it, sustain it, andgo out there and take care of business on Sunday.

Obviously a disappointing game, but like Mikey said, I expect the Bees to bounce back and take game 4. The Mavs were obviously too good of a team to get swept, but they don't seem to have the tools to take this series. I don't think I'm alone to say this, but the Mavs are probably worse since the Kidd trade, and even worse, have mortgaged their future to do it.

you guys... I was there... the refs were bad, but it wasn't signifigantly imbalenced. Oh and don't say anything racist, we're still too close too the nba giving the finals to Dwyane "free throw machine" Wade and Diesel over Dirk and KVH.

As bad as last night was- I'm almost more confident than I was before last night's disaster. On the road- experienced opponont desperate for a win- terrible shooting and re-bounding night for our starters- gross disparity in the number of fouls called and free throws taken- and we were STILL in the game with three minutes to go. If that's the best Dallas has, they are toast. Cheer up MuncieMug- I'm pretty sure we're gonna win this series.

@ Diane: Looks like it. They're 3-0 up on the Suns now. I hope they don't sweep, because then they'll be well rested for the Hornets should we make it through. I'm really surprised to see the Suns going down like this, btw. There was so much hype about that series, and they just didn't show up.

It was just a bad game all around. Chris Paul and David West were both ice cold. Those two plaus Chandler were frustrated all game and forced alot of things. The refs were awfull, and very one sided. dallas got all the calls like they have been getting this entire series. We came into Dallas wanting a split. We let the first game get away from us, now we just got to make the necessary adjustments and come into Dallas and game 4. Than we will be going back home looking to eliminate the Mavs in 5.

LOL! This cracks me up! When the Mavs are on the other end of a lopsided foul count, we are called whiners for bringing it up. When someone else's player falls down it's called smart defense or he's a savvy veteran. When Dirk does it, it's because he's soft. Oh, and claiming the NBA is racist to favor white guys??? Hilarious!!! Are you guys forgetting the treatment Dallas got in the NBA Finals after going up 2-0? (Both of those games were pretty decisive, too). Or did you guys not even know you had an NBA team until this year? I bet Hornets fans didn't mind when Chandler two hand shoved Dirk in the back in game 1. Or when CP did the same thing in the first quarter of game 3. Or when CP lowered his shoulder and bulldozed JET (totally extending his arm to push off). I bet you guys even thought it was funny that not only did CP get away with it, but JET actually got called for a foul. But Eric Dampier decides to send a message and you guys start crying. Have you ever even watched your own team without a biased eye for 5 seconds? Tyson Chandler is one of the dirtiest players I have ever seen. And he cries every time a call goes against him. For a player that creates so much contact and does so much extra that he gets away with, it's ridiculous the amount of whining he does. Don't fret, though, Hornets fans. As diehard a Mavs fan as I am, I still don't expect them to pull it out. Unless you want to act like we did 2 years ago and do more whining than driving.
