The Mavericks are done. I don't say that because they are down 3-1 and heading to New Orleans. I don't say that because of the past history for the Mavs in tough situations. I don't even say it because of any new wrinkle I saw in their game plan tonight. I say it because they flat out surrendered tonight - while the game was still on the line.
At first I was disgusted by the Dallas fans when they started to stream out of the Arena with five and a half minutes to go and their team down nineteen. I thought it was pathetic. But when less than two minutes later Avery Johnson pulled the only two players he had who had been at all effective in the second half, I understood it. This year, Dallas quits. Fans and players alike.
Yeah, that's a bit harsh, but what the hell else can you call it? They were down eighteen with 3:38 remaining when Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry were pulled in favor of Jose Juan "I ain't going to do a damn thing" Barea and Malik "Why the hell am I getting minutes for an NBA team" Allen. They had three and a half minutes left! Tracy McGrady once scored thirteen points in thirty five seconds! Which is more important, trying to scratch out an improbable comeback and heading to New Orleans 2-2 instead of 1-3 or giving those two guys an extra ten minutes of rest when they don't play until Tuesday?
I can just say Avery Johnson is done. He's just too high-strung and that Finals loss to Miami must have caused a few things to snap. During the last two post-season he's been trying too desperately to out-strategize the other team, and allowing his team to go away from what it does well. Last year, he swapped his starting lineup in an attempt to match up to an inferior team, and allowed that team to play their way all series. This year, he spent two games at the start of the series game-planning junk defenses to throw at Paul in a madcap attempt to keep him under control. The result was Paul tearing the Mavericks apart until they went back to a normal defense focused on going under screens and trying to limit his penetration and make him shoot long shots. You know - the same sort of defense everyone uses against Paul.
That, my friends, is what military historians call "surrendering the initiative". Once you start spending all your time worrying about what the other team is going to do, and not trying to play to your own strengths, you've already taken one step on the path to defeat. The Mavericks have now taken 3.
Observations from the game, bullet-style:
- There has been a huge deal made about how Kidd was going to punish Chris Paul on the block. That his greater strength was going to cause all kind of trouble for our boy. After tonight, Kidd has shot exactly zero times on a post up of Paul. That's not points, that's shots. Zero times. He's gotten a few nice assists hitting cutting players, but not once has he tried to score from his "position of strength". In fact, Kidd's only offensive strength has been his three point shooting and a few fast break layups. He doesn't even get to the rim in the half court anymore. I kept count last night and four times he managed to get into the paint, three times with lanes open the basket. On all four drives he kicked the ball out for a perimeter shot. That's not going to get it done.
- Speaking of Kidd, that foul that got him ejected was dangerous as hell. Pargo may have rolled out of it with the reflexes of a cat, but Kidd caught him on the neck and yanked downwards. Even if Pargo hadn't been in the air, that's a Flagrant in any situation and speed. He deserved to get tossed. Honestly - I hope he doesn't get suspended. I'd much rather have the ball in his hands than Jason Terry's, and I told my buddy I hoped they'd downgrade to a flagrant 1 and let him keep playing. I doubted he'd add much to his 3 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 turnovers. In 29 minutes.
- My Hornets player of the game was Pargo. He of the snaggletoothed-grin was again a big lift off the bench, scoring 11, dishing 2, and skying for six big rebounds when our guys were getting beaten pretty badly on the boards.
- We got rebounded again. This time by 5, but we allowed 16 offensive rebounds. Yuck.
- Julian Wright gave Pargo a run for his money, playing with electric energy and doing so well he kept Bonzi stuck to the bench in the second half. He was 5-6 for 11 points, had a pair of nice finishes, and had 2 rebounds and 2 steals to go with his usual frenetic giraffe-calf defense. Oh, and he stripped Jerry Stackhouse and made him look like a schmuck. That's always good.
- We finally got a handle on the free-throws, playing the game we usually played during the season. We shot the least free throws in the season, and gave up the least during the season. After handing the mavs 38, 39 and 39 free throws the previous games, we only let them get 16 tonight. Coupling that with our usual decent defense, and despite the Hornets allowing 16 offensive rebounds, The mavs managed only 84 points on 97 posessions, which is simply awful.(Normally the Mavs should have gotten about 108)
- Paul had a poor game again. At least, you'd think so until you saw his statline of 16 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal and 1 turnover. Only about three teams in the league wouldn't give up their starting point guard for a player who produces that sort of line on a good night.
- Jason Terry, Brandon Bass and Dirk Nowitzki opened the game well, but when they proved to be the only threats the Hornets clamped down on Bass, focused on Nowitzki and let Terry try to win the game himself. Game over.
- Josh Howard, a former fan favorite in Dallas, is now being showered with boos at home as he continues to struggle in the series. You know what? The guy was a force for them for four years, carried the Mavs for a month early this season, and is now being treated like crap because he enjoys pot. I hope he gets out of Dallas, and then the Mavs can play their other awesome wing players. You know - Devean Goerge, Eddie Jones, and Trenten Hassel. I'm sure they'll combine to help the Mavs fall to 43 wins next year.
- Tyson Chandler had another poor game. Dallas has done a nice job driving right at him, getting into his body and using their muscle to make his athleticism not much of a factor. Still, his defense has been vital down low in keeping some of those close shots contested.
- Jerry Stackhouse delivered his usual awesome game, 1-5 from the field, 0-1 from three, with 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 turnover. It took him fifteen minutes to do that. Apparently flapping lips don't produce much on the court. Guess what, Jerry? When Byron was the same age you were now, he was playing twenty minutes a game for the Indiana Pacers, averaging ten points a game on 46% shooting, 39% from three. As their sixth man, he helped them reach the Conference Finals where they fell to Shaq and Penny in seven games. Guess where you will be when the Conference Finals are being played?
- The other Hornets starters all played solid, but not spectacular games. West got his with 24 points on 21 shots and 9 rebounds. Peja had an efficient 19 points on 13 shots to go with 5 rebounds, and Peterson played well for 27 minutes, scoring 10, grabbing 2 rebounds and somehow managing to block 2 shots. Very workman-like and respectable by all of them.
Game 5 is in New Orleans Tuesday night. Let's see if the Mavs can generate some fire between now and then.
Oh, and everyone give Ron a big hand. I've been gone for eight days with my family in DisneyWorld, and I intentionally avoided the internet and TVs so I could watch the Hornets games when I got back without knowing what happened. So all this good playoff coverage you've been gettin'? It's been all Ron. He's the man.

My mom tells me I'm the man all the time. I thought that was just mom talk, but perhaps it really is true. Nice recap, Ryan. I was amazed that all those "fans" left early, too. That could have been the last chance to see their team this season. As for the Mavs quitting, I'm not so sure I agree with that. I get pissed with Byron all the time for leaving key guys in too long after the outcome has been decided. The Mavs had about zero chance of coming back in the last few minutes, so AJ emptied the bench and ensured all his big guns are healthy to fight another day. My favorite moment of the game was right after Kidd took down Pargo. Did you see Pargo's reaction? Even though he almost had his neck snapped, he was smiling and clapping as he got up. Right then he knew the Mavs had folded; the game was over. I love Pargo.

Oh, and I think we should go easy on Jerry Stackhouse. I mean, if he had Magic and Kareem playing with him out there, all in their prime, the game might have gone differently.

Stack and Kidd are two guys who over the years have put up phenomenal numbers and have won nothing. They put up the stats in games that don't matter or in ways that don't contribute. Yet, there are guys out there like Rick Fox and Robert Horry who have had less in the day-to-day box scores, but who have made a crucial stop or hit a crucial shot, enabling their teams to win important games. And for that, they have a collection of rings. Maybe they should take note. And for the record, I feel like New Orleans has plenty of the latter guys. Go Hornets!

Congrats. You've pretty much won, I haven't given up all hope, but theres less than a dream. The only hope is if they play serious spoiler in 5, smash 6, and run into 7 with enough momentum. The Hornets best hope is in game 5, and it shouldn't be too hard. Please don't blame this on Dirk or Terry. This loss was completely the doing of Stackhouse and Howard. Those guys are poisoning my team... I was just so sad when Terry's headband fell off. That guy was doing so well, but Avery kept Stackhouse and Howard in there... their both freakin worthless. And you can't blame the Mavs for giving up down 17 with 3 to go... they were just saving face... I just hope we finally take out the trash this year, including the coach. You're better... for now.

I've re-played the Kidd foul on Pargo a few times in my head, and I can't help but think it was kind of a "Robert Horry on Steve Nash" tactic being displayed. I really have to give our coaching staff alot of credit for keeping our guys on the bench. If any of our players not in the game had come off the bench, they would have been served suspensions. Wow Dallas' Bench..... wow! Except for Bass, they really suck. I mean, I just can't say anything else. The only players on their bench, actually their whole team, with a positive +/- was Eddie Jones, Malik Allen and Juwan Howard. How do you spell garbage time? Did you see that we only had one bench player with a negative +/- that played more than 10 minutes, and that was Hilton Armstrong (big shocker).

I'd love to see a plus/minus for this series when we have Paul, Pargo, and Bonzi on the floor at the same time. We killed them in New Orleans AND in Dallas with the same lineup.

"Guess where you will be when the Conference Finals are being played?" Hopefully with the fucking Knicks for someone who neither sucks nor talks trash about his own damn teammates. You guys caught us on an off-year, don't forget it. You didn't meet the established team, that'll be ready for next year.

@ godallas: With all due respect, I think it might take a little longer than a year for the Mavs to get back on top. At least one Dallas reporter this morning expects the Mavs to blow it all up in the offseason and miss the Playoffs next year. I'm in agreement that it might get worse before it gets better for you guys.

really... J-Ho's value is dropping like a lead balloon. Stacks would be... but its hit rock bottom for someone who was once an all star. Seriously, who's idea was it to hire Juwan Howard? Our bench belongs in the D-League... thats one big problem... and our futures completely mortgaged... thats another big problem. But really, this is a team right now that hasn't been able to gel, you screw with a team's chemistry midseason, and you could be asking for a collapse. This could be a killer offseason... like firing the coach (really... putting in JJ Barea, god love him, when we have a 7 point lead against a powerful hornets bench... JJ doesn't need to go, but hes not a playoff mav yet) and dumping all the old eastern all stars and trading Howard for someone young whos on the rise, improving Bass... or... this could be the offseason that sends the Mavs towards below .500... hopefully losing twice in the first round will be the wake-up bitch slap so to speak...

Um, while I take notes from summary statements, I don't really agree demoting JJ like that. He's actually pretty good, and desperately needs some quality PT. Anyway, Dallas was never a team I trusted to hold onto leads, even during our 67 win season. I think most organizations need youth, not experience. I criticized the people we signed this the season (E. Jones, Juwan How, and I guess Tyrone L.), and I guess it turned out for the worse. At least Brandon Bass is a (blindingly) shining spot for the Mavs. Thankfully, I still don't see a 'rivalry' between the two teams, despite how chippy it has gotten. Time to wrap up and pack up for San Antonio. Stay classy New Orleans. Gameball to Pargo, most definitely, if only for surviving. We love you Hobbit. And glad to see you're back, Ryan! P.S. NBA.com says "New Orleans' Mardi Gras-esque yellow road uniforms made their postseason debut, a low point in fashion history". Hahaha. Bring back the purp!

@ godallas: One thing to remember about us meeting in a supposed "off year". We're gaining experience, creating great team chemistry, and Chris Paul is only going to grow from the playoff experience and get even better as an all around player. So if the Mavs are better next year, so to will the Hornets be better. Going to need a lot more than what they have now to derail the Hornets potential. Get ready to see Bees on top of the leaderboards for a few years to come. I can see the Hornets as playoff regulars, with a number of deep runs. Hopefully they can bring this city some gold it's long been missing.

I think its safe to say that regardless of what happens on Tuesday that Avery Johnson is done as the Mavs HC? I really think he is..the Mavs have fallen apart big time (all but Nowitzki & Terry of course)..I've said all along that the Kidd trade was a bad one but they wanted to win now even though Idon't see the rush..their main guys (Nowitzki and Howard) are still pretty young..they should've kept Harris..their are plenty of contenders (ieus with CP, Utah with D-Will, and Boston with Rando) that are young at the point..Howard is seriously slumping out there..i feel bad for Dirk..he's the only Mav who's played hard every game and they may be making another first round exit..couldn't be happier for the Hornets though!!

I dont think anyone is booing Howard b/c of the pot, at least not anyone intelligent. They're booing himbecause he's stinking out the joint when it matters most. He has been a no-show all series long, and his slump has lasted since the last month of the reg. season. That's why he's boo worthy.

I thought the Mavs would probably win this series, and that the match up was actually pretty good for them. I knew Paul would be good (noted, that I didn't think he'd be absolutely ridiculous in Games 1 and 2), but what I didn't count on (and I think what the Mavs didn't count on) was David West. Man, has he been something else this series. The Mavs are in a bit of trouble with their roster, but I don't think they need to go into outright rebuilding mode. Their roster is still pretty good, and I don't think pulling panic trades for Howard or even Kidd are going to solve much. Instead, they should focus on securing a good bench player via trade of free agency (with the midlevel exception) and probably fire Avery. They don't play defense all that well anymore, and the iso-heavy offense is terrible with Kidd. An offense with more motion would help these Mavs greatly. But for the moment, you're absolutely right: these Mavs quit. The Hornets will definitely be a perennial playoff contender; it's hard to imagine any reason why they would fall off. And provided Tyson establishes a bit of a back to the basket game, and CP3 and Julian Wright continue to improve, this team will be downright dangerous in years to come.

Hey Rob, that's what us Hornets fans have been seeing for more than just this season: David West flying under the radar completely. Fans STILL do not know who the heck he is, which is a disappointment considering his impact to the game. DX deserves more recognition, but trust me, scouting reports do not underestimate his game. The Mavs need to supplement BBass. The guy could go beserk. Pretty high basketball IQ from what I've seen.
