I had a feeling it was coming. As I mentioned in the things to look for post earlier today, the Hornets had an abysmal night shooting from deep(18%), the Spurs were hitting their deep shots at a nice clip(44%). That - and some missed free throws - was the difference in the game in the end. Otherwise the Hornets were essentially even in turnovers(even), fouls(-1), free-throws(even), rebounding(-2) and shoting percentage(+2%).
I'm not particularly bothered by the loss. We knew the Spurs weren't going to roll over for us, so we just need to come back Sunday and take one in SA.
Some observations about the game, bullet style:
- Other than Wright, our bench was not good tonight. Bonzi had some boneheaded shots and plays and Pargo, once again, couldn't find the bottom of the net, shooting 1-7. Ely, who had provided some solid defense on Duncan in the earlier two games, provided us with fouls, turnovers, and an awful 3-second violation that negated a made three. Harsh.
- West had himself a nice game until crunch time, when he uncharacteristically botched 3 free throws in a row and got blocked twice.
- The Spurs perimeter defense was much improved by leaving Bowen on the Perimeter and letting Ginobili track Peterson. Surprise? Peterson and Peja combined to shoot 3-10 and get 2 threes.
- Tyson Chandler had a nice game going until he picked up three quick fouls in the third - two of them stupid fouls he could have easily avoided. Thats when we got Ely. Yay.
- The Spur's execution was excellent tonight, leading to 28 assists. They were driving and dishing and swinging and driving until they found the open man. After having countered that by determined scrambling in games 1 and 2, the Hornets weren't able to keep up with it this game.
- The Hornets perimeter defense got shredded tonight. Parker and Ginobili kept getting wherever they wanted, both scoring 31, and Ginobili was clearly in all-out attack mode. The guy was never at rest, and I salute him for fighting through that gimpy ankle. He was a game-changer.
- Paul scored 35 on 15-25 shooting and had 9 assists with one turnover. He spent more time in the paint than almost anyone else on the floor, unleashing his hesitation dribble and crossover to get right to the top of the dotted circle multiple times. Duncan was unwilling to lay off Chandler to challenge him for fear of the alley-oop, and it resulted in Paul drilling a layup line.
- The Spurs played all their best 4 players - Bowen, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili 40 minutes each. Unusual for Pop to do that, so he must have been determined to not let this game slide.
- Duncan wasn't able to get much going on his own on the offensive end, but when he was able to catch a pass moving through the lane and go, he was effective. Defensively, he had a pretty big impact, altering shots and helping on West effectively when West made moves into the paint.
Next game isn't until Sunday. It'll be interesting to see all the "told you so" articles that will crop up now that the Spurs have won one. It was a bit over the top the number of columns I've seen announcing the Spurs were finished over the past few days.
They aren't finished until game 5 of this series.

Well, in essence we are all guilty of that 'told you so', because I don't think anyone of us thought the Spurs were going to play abysmal this game. I'm proud of the first three quarters (and some of the fourth when Spurs pushed the game to 10+), because despite horrendous rotation and botchy perimeter shooting, we hung in there, with the lead at times. Again, they limited CP's effectiveness in moving the ball, but that isn't to say CP was limited, per se. Only stuff to improve on though, so let's regroup for Sunday. Maybe Ginobili will stop being so good.

theyneed to screen bowen to get peja free and let him shoot just an idea but i think it would work if paul gave the screen since parker and manu can be shot over

I wouldn't even say they limited CP's effectivness moving the ball; there were at least four times tonight where Chris passed the ball to a teammate right under the basket and they couldn't convert. I'm actually encouraged by this game tonight. With Bowen not guarding him, I think it's more likely that CP puts up another 30 point 10 assist game then it is that Tony Parker and Ginobili put up 60+. Bowen really bothered Peja tonight, but I'm sure Byron will address that over the weekend. Run him off screens and get him more looks in transition. This was a two point game with 8 minutes left in the fourth. If we hit a few more threes (like we have been), or if San Antonio misses a few more (like they have been), then we're talking about a 3-0 series lead. I can't wait 'til Sunday.

Ryan, one thing you didn't mention was the discrepancies in assists. According to ESPN, we had 15. They had 28. Pretty much sums the game right there. Bad movement on both sides of the court for the bees.

Chris, most of my concern lies on the options CP had, limiting that. I guess 'ball movement' wasn't too specific, but certainly perimeter looks were shoddy, unlike the last few games in the playoffs. Just limiting Peja's open looks hurts our offense, as anybody could probably tell tonight. But I don't think it's absolutely necessary to integrate Peja (it'll be closer games, in my opinion), so long as we have people willing to attack the basket, at least drawing fouls from their bigs.

Byron had to do a better job with subs. Seriously, Pargo was cold and clearly Peterson or Bonzi should have been in at SG instead. By the time the lineup was straightened out, the Spurs took the game.

I think the move of Bruce Bowen onto Peja Stojakovic changes the nature of the series. As Mark mentions above their was a huge difference in assists. With Bowen on Peja and Manu on Mo Pete that effectively limits both of the wings. Duncan is on Chandler which limits him. That leaves a two man game (albeit the best possible two man game) to lead New Orleans to victory. Bruce is the right type of defender for Peja, he reminds me a lot of Rick Fox. He's disciplined enough, quick enough, and will stick to him like glue. He'll bother Peja consistently. That's also lot of one-on-one or two-on-two basketball. Which will be a huge burden on West and Paul, especially Paul, to consistently create and score on nearly every single possession. It also takes a lot of guys out of the play and makes it hard for them to contribute and/or hit shots when they do actually materialize. For example it's much harder for a perimeter shooter to hit his three pointer when it's his first shot in the last 6 minutes rather than his third. It hurts the rhythm of the offense substantially. It hurts ball movement. I think the Hornets need that third scorer to be solid at around 15-17 points to beat top teams when they're performing well. If San Antonio can limit those other supporting players this will really change the serious. Hornets are still in control of the series and they can win this series but this matchup has just changed in a big way. They've got to find some other ways to score, getting back to running the floor would be the easiest way.

Thanks for covering the recap, Ryan. I was able to take in the game down at the Gordon Biersch watch party. Those things are going from strength to strength. Anyways, I wasn't too disappointed with the loss. I didn't think the Spurs would let themselves fall into a 3-0 hole, although I didn't think we'd lose by double figures either. I agree with previous commenters though that we'll need to get Peja more involved in Game 4. We can't just forget about him because Bowen switched over. Chris Paul was phenomenal last night. That shot he flipped in over his head at the end of the third quarter was ridiculous. I got brain damage just trying to comprehend it.

I left the game at the half and was surprised to see the hornets lose this one by 11....

Dave, you make a great point. I think to combat the move of Bowen on Peja, Coach Scott should maybe consider playing JuJu for MoPete more in game 4. That's nothing against Morris, because hisefficiency has been huge for us so far in the playoffs. It'sjust that, to me, JuJu seemed to do the best job of anyone checking Ginobli last night. More than that, Wright brings more of an agressive style to the game on offense and defense, and I like the idea of constantly challenging Manu and making him work that ankle as much as possible. That being said, I agree with everyone who wrote that they kinda saw this coming. The Spurs are a good team, and we're not going to win many games against them when our defense struggles and the supporting cast doesn't produce. No worries, though. The guys stepped up in Game 4 in Dallas, and I've got total confidence they will again on Sunday.

I'd love to see more of Ju Ju. He can cause Ginobili serious problems with his length, quickness and activity. He's easily done the best job on Manu for the Hornets this season. It looked like he could irritate Parker too. You stop us, we stop you. I like your thinking Matt.

The Spurs made 2 significant adjustments prior to this game. 1, they moved Bowen to cover Peja. 2, Manu started. Manu starting wasn't real big, because he still played his usual minutes. Putting Bowen on Peja was huge. Through the 1st two games, he averaged 23.5 points.... last night: 8. San Antonio averaged 83 points through the 1st two games, last night their "Big 3": 78.... They played like champions who were up against it. I was proud of our guys for competing. Oh, and other than Julian Wright, our bench pretty much sucked.

I've got so much love for JuJu too, but it looks to me like Manu's last second halftime bucket was the giraffe's assignment, and he wasn't even in spitting distance. It was - dare I say it - a rookie mistake. In a close game, that hurts. I totally agree that JuJu gives us a different, more attacking frame on offense, but I'm betting MoPete is still a safer bet to cover Ginobli in crunch times. Hell, I'd vote to have JuJu start the second, third and fourth to keep the offence rolling, but I'm now on the MoPete defender bandwagon. We'll see I guess... But definitely more off the ball screens for Peja ANDMo.

Responding to Dave, if the Spurs try to lock down Mo Pete, Peja, and TC, and leave us with a two-man game between Paul-West and Parker-Oberto/Thomas/Horry, Ifeel pretty good about that. Those are fantastic match-ups for us. Paul is torching Parker, and I've seen no evidence that any of those three can handle West. If Paul & West go for 60 again (which they will in those match-ups) and weplay defense the way we did in Games 1 & 2, we will winGame 4.

Oh. My. God. I just checked the polling results for the All-First/Second/Third teams, andTWO total retards voted Steve Nash First Team ahead of CP3. What freakin' season were those clowns watching? Steve Nash for chrissakes! He averaged more turnovers than CP averaged points this year! I think I have seriously underrated how little seriously this team is actually being taken, which makes me want to spank these defending champs even more. GEAUX BEES!!!

Simply put, the Spurs needed to win-the Hornets wanted to win-BIG difference. The 3 pters were the key. They allowed that punk-ass Parker space to get to the rim. Ginobli was the X factor. Gimpy ankle my ass. If I were the coach-I'd play the Spurs the same way the rest of the series-no adjustments. Rely on the Hornets athleticism and youth. Speed kills and-given time-the Spurs will be roadkill.

That was a tough game. Just one of those can't-get-momentum-in-the-second-half affairs. That 3 second call on West (the one that wiped out a 3 pointer) hurt. I encourage all of you to join me next game in my oop ritual. Every time cp3 throws an oop to TC, take a shot of liquor. Makes a game like this a bit more tolerable. Still hate the spurs. Can't we get someone to throw Muppet Ginobli into Doris Burke next game?

Does anyone else see that Chandler's continuously hand - checks Tim Duncan in the post. I thought the NBA had outlawed this defensive tactic.

Never Mind Chandler hand checking TD in the post. I just read this on the NBA.com: http://www.nba.com/features/stujackson_bogpresentation_070503.html Still Tim Duncan is going to play so much better in games 4 and 5, so prepare for thatHornets fans.. SC
