For the second game in a row, I got recap duty - and true to form from the regular season, whenever I get to write the recap it's never a happy one. I've managed to write a recap after a winning game one time all season. I'm not a supersitious man, but if this continues Ron may end up on permanent Recap duty.
As for the game? There was nothing good in that game. I tried to pick one or two plays to hold up as a microcosm of that game, but a whole slew of them stuck out to me. Just a few of the ways of Hornet's Futility:
- Peja has his number called three times in the first five minutes of the game. Running like a madman off screens, he managed to miss two uncontested layups and a wide open 15 foot jumper. Later, his one open three for the game? Clang.
- The Hornets, desperate for a run to bring the game back within reach, managed to force 6 turnovers at the end of the third - and got two points out of it.
- Julian Wright, who sank two big threes in game two has the ball worked around and receives it, wide open, on the wing. He passes up the shot. Next time down the court, the Spurs ignore him, he gets the ball, he passes up a wide open shot, dribbles into traffic, and loses it.
- Multiple times, Paul penetrated, drew the defenders, kicked to West, and West faked a shot, fumbled around, and then bricked a contested shot. When he did decide to post or drive, he managed several nice up and unders, but laid them short repeatedly.
- The Hornets missed a lot of shots. The starters managed 4 offensive rebounds.
- Tyson Chandler plays two solid quarters, keeping from fouling, making Duncan work for his shots(though Duncan was still hitting them), then, out of nowhere, he picks up five fouls in a 12 minute span.
Essentially, even when the Hornets managed to do good things, they couldn't finish them. Of course, I don't want to give the impression that the Hornets were doing lots of good things. I said in my last post that I felt comfortable because the Spurs hadn't shown they could stop our offense. They did it tonight. Oh, and don't let the spurs 30.8% long range shooting fool you. Finley and Udoka killed us from long range when the minutes mattered, and Parker seemed to hit every long shot he took.
Lets see what adjustments Byron makes and see if the Spurs can do it in New Orleans. I have a feeling next game will be very different.

Thanks for the recap..however painful that might've been for you. :/ I hope it will be different in Game 5!! I watched two minutes at the end of the third quarter of the game and was so ultra disappointed that i turned off the tv and resorted to following the game online... but it was garbage time in the 4th so i didn't watch anymore. :( (like couldn't bear to watch it anymore...) The Spurs did seem to figure out how to shut down key players (Peja's gone cold from the arc, it seems.. :/)-- i wonder if they can replicate that on the road. They are the champs and have really shown how to keep composure going home 0-2... Game 5 is key for the Hornets to win or they'll be down 2-3 going back to San Antonio and that would be really difficult for them to win the series. I think i agree with Coach Scott about intensity level-- The Hornets didn't match the Spurs' hunger in wanting the game. Perhaps they just got a bit lax on the road? Did the first quarter of Game 5 go lopsided as well? i heard that by halftime it was already double digit lead... Nevertheless, Go Hornets for Game 5!!!!!

I'm with Melvin: I'm worried, too. Losing doesn't bother me too much, but getting absolutely spanked does. I thought up until the last few minutes of Game 3 that we looked hungry and played smart, but since then we've looked like a different team. We really needed something from either Wright or Wells in this one and they couldn't deliver. West played horrible and was acting like an asshole out there. I expected better from him.

This is what I feared after game three. With the Spurs back to normal defensive matchups and Peja effectively D'd up by Bowen the Hornets ball movement has crashed to the ground. Even if Daivd West had hit his shots and scored 25 points they wouldn't have won. The Hornets need that third scorer to beat good teams when they're performing well. Someone needs to step up and fill that void. Bonzi Wells is the next best scorer on the team, Scott needs to involve him more. It's tough to beat San Antonio with only two significant scorers on the court.

I had started worrying when TC's blog/statement prior to this game mentioned that this serieswas similar tothe Dallas one (where they lost the third game, but won the fourth). It sounded like our guys were over-confident andsure that they would win the 4th game. I hope this loss lights a fire under our butts, and helps us beat the Spurs tomorrow.

Actually if we were going to lose this one, I don't mind it being big (other than having to watch it, of course). Close losses can sting. But a blowout will crush a man's pride. And sometimes that makes one angry. And this team needs to play angry.

@ mW: I don't know, man. I'd be feeling much better right now if we'd only lost by single digits. And David West and Tyson Chandler definitely don't need to play angry. They need to chill out and get their heads together.

Lesson learned, I hope. I'm sure there was talk in the Hornets locker room about "getting to that next level" prior to last night's game. The Champs showed us that we don't even know what level that is yet. That was the most complete game that I've seen the Champs play all year, and they played that way when they needed to the most. Thats what chamionship basketball is all about. Either we are going to learn that lesson in 48 hours, and come out ready to play game 5, or we'll continue to learn it over a long summer. Anyone else feel like we've awakened a sleeping giant? For us Hornets fans out there, we can lean on 2 facts(at least for now). 1, They beat our ass to TIE the series. Somebody still needs to win two more games. 2, two of the last three possiblegames are on our home court, where we haven't lost to-date in the playoffs.

Someone told Peja he's in the playoffs now, so I guess its time for him to do his usual May disappearing act, huh. Wow, missing two open layups like that, and I bet I can count on one hand the amount of 3-pointers he even attempted in San Antonio. Credit the Spurs with completely taking him away. But come on Pedrag, I know Bowen hounds the hell outta you, but you're 6'10. Grow a pair.

Coach of the Year - the pressure is now on you. Pop made some great adjustments after Game 2 (mainly allowing CP3 to be a scorer before a passer and essentially shutting down Peja). Now we gotta figure out what to do to 1) get Peja involved again and 2) slow (stopping is impossible) Tony and Manu in the paint

Peja is no "Dissapearing Act", he was great for Sac Town when he was there and overall hes not doing too bad except for these past 2 games where he doesn't seem like himself and I'll give credit where it's due, Bowen has been airtight which for some reason seems to completly throw peja off his game, but I don't see how thats gonna change in game 5. When you find a way to defend someone so well then theres no reason to just stray off that method. I just hope someone else steps up for this series at least because I can't think of any other defender in the playoffs with bowen's expirence except for maybe Kirelinko and Peja showed he can hold his own against Andre but I hope I'm wrong about this because I love Peja Stojakovic and I hope someone can tell me somethin to easy the pain in the bottom of my gut, but I feel if no one stepsup like a Wells or Peterson the suns gonna set onourHornets...=(

I have to commend the Hornet fans. I have never posted here but I always read the posts. I am used to reading the sour grapes posted by almost all Sun fans. The refs ripped us off etc...etc... As a Spur fan I'm not ashamed to say that the Hornets do have a chance---a great chance. Game five will proably be close --whoever wins will probably take the series---may the best team win.....

I don't know, Mikey. Peja looked pretty awesome against Dallas. And he looked good in Games 1 and 2 when he had anyone other than Bowen on him.

@ Tom Turney: Thanks, man. Always good to hear from a level-headed fan, no matter the affiliation. I'm always cool with people complaining about the officials so long as they've already berated the several other things their team did wrong that cost them the game/series.
