Man, both these teams suck on the road.
The series swung back to New Orleans tonight and our Hornets were back in business, using a massive 28-11 third quarter to sting the Spurs and put ourselves back in control. David West was nothing short of monstrous on the night, Chris Paul was Chris Paul, and Morris Peterson picked up the slack with mucho three pointers.
All in all, it was a damn fine night at the Hive.

Let me try keep the notes short and to the point this time. These late games are killing my sleepy time...
- Final score was 101-79. Linkage: recap | box score
- Probably the biggest difference tonight from the past two games was the Hornets intensity. Obviously energized by the home crowd, they showed much better hustle on defense and played way more aggressively than they did in San Antonio. It was a pretty tough game, with 53 personals and 3 technicals called by the three officials named Joey. Tony Parker got beat up a lot and that seemed to knock him off his game. I didn't have the advantage of replays at the Arena, but I think most of the Hornets hits were just good hard fouls, and they worked well.
- We adjusted a little on Duncan, playing him more straight up than we did in the previous four games. Byron still sent the double teams, but they usually didn't come until Timmy put the ball on the floor, making it more difficult for him to pass out of there. Tyson Chandler did a great job on Duncan for the most part, giving him very few easy looks at the basket and staying out of foul trouble. Duncan finished with just 10 points on 5-18 shooting, although he did tear down a beastly 23 boards.
- As Ryan predicted in his Game 5 preview, David West had himself a game. His numbers: 38 points, 16-25 FG's, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks and 2 steals. West had the entire package working in this one, putting together undoubtedly his best performance of the season. He helped keep us in the game in the first half when nobody else could buy a bucket, passed well out of double teams all night, played solid help D, and just abused whoever the Spurs put on him down low. Fabricio Oberto is probably pulling his beautiful hair out right about now.
- Our bench pretty much sucked again. Pargo had 10 points but he didn't shoot well. Beyond that we got 6 points from the reserves. Bonzi was really only good for some hard fouls tonight. With the bench not delivering, Byron Scott opted to open the fourth quarter with all our starters on the floor. Popovich went with a five of Udoka, Ginobili, Barry, Finley and Oberto, and didn't get Parker and Duncan back out there until there was 8:26 left.
- We tried to free up Peja from Bowen some more. We ran him along the baseline and around various picks to get him good looks. It didn't work great, with the Serbian only launching 9 shots and connecting on 3. I'm still waiting to see him in the pick and roll with Paul, trying to create mismatches.
- Hmm. I just noticed that we out-rebounded the Spurs 50-41, despite those 23 boards by Duncan. No other Spur had more than 4 rebounds. Peja had 11 tonight.
- Chris didn't have his shot working in the first half, but started taking it strong to the hole after the break. He scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, and finished the game with 14 assists and just 1 turnover. He also pretty sure he didn't flop once.
- Good bounce back game character-wise for the Hornets. They got way too bitchy down in San Antonio, arguing with the refs and shoving random Spurs. West in particular seemed to be focused on the job at hand tonight. I thought he really let himself and the team down with how he acted in Game 4, but he definitely redeemed himself in this one. Head down, play the game, let the final score do the talking.
- Great atmosphere at the Arena as usual. They had the crowd pumped up with clips from the movie 300 on the big screen ("Give them nothing, but take from them EVERYTHING!"), Hugo running from midcourt to the upper bowl with the Rocky theme tune blaring, and Drew Brees throwing an autographed football from courtside to the upper deck. Good times.
- One low blow: that dude with the life-size Eva Longoria cutout behind the basket when Parker was shooting free throws in the fourth quarter. I laughed at the time, as did everyone in the Arena (damn you, mob mentality) but in hindsight that was just way too personal. We're better than that, New Orleans.
- The Spurs stayed ahead in the first half mainly because they were busy dropping 6-of-9 from three. In the second half they managed to hit just 3-of-14 from deep. As a team the Spurs shot just 37.7 percent from the field overall. Bowen and Udoka were their only guys to hit at least half their shots, and they only launched 11 between them.
- Two other things I thought the Hornets did really well tonight: They took care of the ball and they kept Parker out of the lane. As a team we only had 6 turnovers, compared to 23 in the last two games combined. Parker scored 18 points but only 6 of them came in the paint.
- Cause for concern: Tyson left the game about three minutes into the fourth quarter with what's being called a bruised left foot. He had to be helped to the sideline by his teammates. West also came out of the game late due to back pain. In the AP recap, it says Byron isn't too concerned and expects them to both play on Thursday, so hopefully that's the case.
So there we have it. Just when everyone thought the momentum had completely shifted in the Spurs favor, the Hornets get back home and lay another beat down on the defending champs. I'll admit I was pretty nervous ahead of the game tonight, but after how it went down, I'm feeling confident about our chances of winning the series. Game 6 will be tough and we might not be at full health, but if it comes to a Game 7 -- which wouldn't be played until next Monday -- it will be in New Orleans, and then you have to favor the team that's won the last three games here by an average of almost 20 points.
Two chances to slay the giant. Let's get it done.

Thurs-Mon would be 4 days of rest. That's good for the Hornets but too much rest for the Spurs. Can't allow those old legs to get that much rest.

Great job team...coach ByScott knows a thing or two about playoff basketball....... Living only about 120miles from Xzavier (or how ever it's spelled) I saw DWest play a few times in college.....I couldnt believe he FELL all the way to ? in the draft...how did so many teams mess up, and not see the multi-talents he posses? His game last night is the overall best in the playoffs (by anyone) this year...38 14 and those 5 blocks,WOW.....and how about Peja's 11 rebounds.....WHY CAN'T EITHER OF THESE TEAMS PLAY ON THE ROAD...are the refs cheating to much for the home team?????? I'm so glad to say this morning, "ONLY 9 MORE WINS TO A CHAMPIONSHIP"... We're almost half way there. To now think, almost no one thought we would beat Dallas (Dallas in 5 or 6, they said). Now we have the Champs on the ropes! ! ! This IS the BIGGGGGGGEST story in theses 2008 playoffs. Let's SHOW UP in a BIG WAY in SanAntone and put the BIG HIRT ON them ! ! ! GEAUX HORNETS AND GET THE GAME THURSDAY (get er done)! ! ! ! ! !

biggest reason for peja's rebounds was the minutes played -45 most of our started player almost the whole game which worked out great tonight but we cant do it forever so that bench needs to be improved hopefully byron will want another forgeiner in there and sign me up =) seriously though bench improvement is the number 1 thing to fix this summer

Good recap as usual.... but come on - are you serious about the Eva Longoria cutout? I'm sure Tony will find some way to recover from the grevious wound this stunt caused him!

BTW I wasn't at the game b/c of work, but I'm pretty sure that Parker missed both free throws.

I think that the Eva cutout was ok, and hilarious. If they had a cutout of Parker's grandma in a Hornets jersey, that would be too personal, since she's not a public figure. Eva's a superstar too, so she's fair game for satire, and this was pretty lighthearted.

I cant talk this morning from screaming last night. Last night may have been the most fun Ive ever had with my clothes on. I can summarize the game like so: DWest DWest DWest was on FIRE. WOOOO!

I also have something to say about the halftime entertainment. Last night's show was the best I've seen, and I think the Hornets should have local acts perform at the half WAY more often than they do. It was a great show, there are tons of local groups to choose from that could rock just as hard, the fans would be into it (is there a more musically aware population than that of New Orleans?), and it would be a real way for the team to support the recovery of the city's musical scene. And as much as I loved the Simon Says competition and the baby crawl race, I would always rather watch Trombone Shorty, or Rebirth, or Anders Osborne, or Kermit, or....you get the idea.

@MarkF Im with you on the local entertainment. Of course now, Soul Rebels are part of the Hive and Im happy with that too. I'm starting to believe that the secret to our home court advantage is the tuba. Hey, I dont recall, but did we show any love for Horry when he broke the NBA record for most playoff games? If we didn't, we shoulda but it sure seemed the Hive was out for blood last night and if a Spur wont the Metal of Honor last night, we would have booed him.

@Matt - Totally. Props To Horry. I'll never forget that dunk he missed but hung on to the ring and flushed back home (Houston days?). Disallowed but totally awesome. He might not have had the overall impact of Kareem, but dude has hit some CLUTCH shots over his career. Tainted a bit with the Nash hit, but still, a hell of an achievment and deserved. Well done Rob. Oh, and DWEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZYYYY!!!!!!! (and for the love of everything sacred please step up Donatello and JuJu)

About the Eva cutout: True, she's a public figure and everything, but I just think the personal stuff is a bit much, whether Parker's wife happens to be a public figure or not. I'd rather as a crowd we just be loud and boo and cheer appropriately, rather than resort to that. We can beat the Spurs and stay classy. It's the same way I feel about Paul flopping in the series and West acting like he had his toys taken away in Game 4. And I'm not completely dry when it comes to this stuff. I remember those guys in the stands when we played the Mavericks, dressed up like cannabis plants and taunting Josh Howard. That was okay in my book, because Howard admitted to being a dumbass and smoking weed on the radio. But I don't see any reason to rip on a guy just because his wife is a famous actress. If most people found the whole Eva thing funny and harmless though, fair enough. I've yet to see it mentioned in a news report about the game so it obviously wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be.

Even More Hilarious was the Darth Vader introduction of the Spurs' starters before the game. The"Imperial March" was playing while they were being introducedawesome. I'm suprised you didn't mention that Ron. Well, Peja found a way to contribute tonight, even though he didn't score many points. I thought his endless journey around screens to try and get a shot had an effect on Bowen as the game wore on. He did finish with 11 boards, and one HUGE assist to Mo Pete! That was a fantastic play in which he passed up a relatively open 3 to dish it to Mo, who was even more open. Mo, having the hot hand, nailed the trey from the corner.

Nice win. But, what's with Juju these days? He doesn't want to take open 3's anymore. I was really pissed last night when he was WIDE open for a 3, but decided to get closer to the paint and attempt (and miss) a jumper.

What do you mean, "we're better than that, New Orleans" ... that's PRECISELY what we should've been doing from the get go. It's not like somebody was dry humping a blow up doll dressed like Tony Parker's wife or anything...Sheesh...

The Eva sign is as low class as it gets. Sad part is that guy probably abused that sign in his basement before he took it to game. Damn perv. Don't mess with families, man come on. I wonder if he was holding up that sign when Parker face planted on the ground and the crowd booed him. Thats worse than the Jazz fans booing Fisher. Great job people.

Well. Considering Parker has faked hurt several times in this series (and from how he bounced up and hit his free throws with no problem), it's not surprising...

I don't really think anything was wrong with the Eva poster. It's not like Eva was naked for all the kids in the Arena to see or anything. But perhaps most GUYS would be applauding the guy had Eva in fact been naked. LMAO! What's classless is this Utah fan holding one hand over his eye while Derek Fisher is at the FT line. Everyone knows Fisher's daughter had/has eye cancer. And then you have this guys holding up this poster for Kobe.... http://bleacherreport.com/images_root/image_pictures/0030/9791/38701985_article.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v461/eureca323/fishfancopy.jpg

@ Mo: Agreed, those images show far worse taunting and a complete lack of class. I'd love to hear Chris Paul's thoughts on the Eva poster. He's friends with both her and Parker, so it'd be interesting to get his take on it.

Some of my comments on the game from watching it on TV: Seems like knocking down Tony Parker a few times is good for us because he seemed to not be as aggressive. The first foul on Chandler was bull shit that was clean. David West was the hero in the first half and kept us in the game and the defense win in for us in the second half. I've also noticed that when Chris Paul is around 7+ assists in the first we almost always win regardless of his point total. The Eva thing may be classless, but if there is Game 7; I think the fan should start making out with the Eva cut-out. Not only that the fans should pass it around and all of them should make out with the cut-out. By the way this for some reason didn't make the television cut.

Oh yeah thats a real great idea. Pass around an Eva poster and have everyone make out with it. Brilliant. Your children must be so proud. I think it was too pathetic to put on TV, some stuff is too sad to give attention to.

Half way through the 2nd quarter I went and dug out my OKC Hornets T-shirt and OKC Hornets baseball hat and put them on. I guess thats what did it. anyway - thanks Ryan for not doing the recap! Stay pregame it might be safer. I'm worried about Tyson's foot. Is that the one he had surgery on? He seemed like he was in alot of pain. I'm rooting for The Lakers - we can't beat the Jazz so hopefully they will take them out.

Another great game in this epic series. I think overall the quality of play is going down a little in this series as both teams are getting worn down a bit. Thanks to David West for winning it almost singlehandedly for us tonight. The Spurs finally started missing some shots which helped our defensive intensity in that pivotal 3rd quarter. It seems like the Spurs 3pt shootingis the key to the series. They have been getting open looks through game 5, so obviously NO can't or won't stop the barrage of 3's. In game 6, I would take my chances w/ Duncan 1 on 1 regardless of who guards him. Put his bricklaying ass on the free throw line if he gets in too close. We have enough big bodies to foul him. They have too many good shooters to leave open all the time. The pressure is on the Spurs now though. Lets knock out these guys and hopefully bring on the Jazz.

Nice recap, and I say that as a lifelong Spurs fan. As for Eva, I'm totally split. On the one hand, Tony really should be able to handle that since their high-profile relationship is all over the place. And it, obviously, would be a hell of a lot creepier if it was a blow-up picture of somebody else's wife who wasn't on the cover of 100 magazines a year. On the other hand its totally totally classless. Maybe funny, but totally classless. I felt the same way when Red Sox fans wore blonde girl masks to throw off A-Rod when his infidelities came to light. I felt the same way with Jessica Simpson signs for Tony Romo or the above-mentioned stuff about Kobe and Fischer. I was ashamed when Spurs fans chanted "No Means No" at Kobe. Like, I'll scream my head off at Dirk and tell him, in no uncertain terms, that he sucks and everyone he knows sucks and he can suck it. But it would never occur to me to show up with a poster of his wife and kids. It reminds me of the Talkin' Softball episode of the Simpsons, where Lisa scolds Bart for taunting Daryl Strawberry and Bart says that they're pro athletes and these things just roll right off them. And, of course, The Straw is wiping tears from his eyes.

Classless? Hells No! i could see if it was a picture of a nekkid eva longoria or eva longoria having relations with Tim duncan. It was just a picture of his wife. You know, the same wife who is at every one of his home games who he can look up and see in the stands every other day. If he can't handle that kind of "taunting" in the nba, parker needs to go back to biddy basketball and fans need to lighten up!

As long as the picture of Eva was authentic, I have no problem with it. That is, if she made money by posing for that picture and some dude got it blown up, fair game. Let's also not forget that TP is the dude who said something to the effect of "I love you and miss you, baby," in French after one of these playoff games. Remember when the TNT asked the poor intern what he said? So not only has SHE put herself in the public sphere, but HE has also, and moreover, THEY have put themselves in the public. Fair game. My opinion = class has nothing to do with it. Just home court advantage.
