And that's the season. The Hornets fall to the Spurs, 91-82 after fighting back to within three from 15 down at the start of the fourth.
Two things did us in tonight. Rebounding and a three point barrage. The rebounding, though a pronounced problem earlier in the game, got better in the second half. The Spur's three point shooting, however, never cooled.
At several points this season I pointed out the Hornets lost when their three point shooting was poor, and the opponents was great. Tonight, the Spurs hit 12-28, a mark of 42.9%. The Hornets shot 4-17, for 23.5%. Their shooters off the bench - Finley, Horry and Udoka were huge, raining 6 of 11 threes from deep. As usual, the Hornets bench produced little until Pargo had a hot aggressive streak taking the ball to the basket at the end of the game.
In the end, we fought hard, and just fell short at the end, leaving me simply exhausted. And I wasn't even on the treadmill for this game.
A few things I saw - though this will probably not be a full recap.
- Tyson Chandler did a phenomenal job on Duncan defensively. On the posessions where he played Tim straight up, he worked him hard, and Duncan almost never got a clean look. Wish we had softened the doubles on him and stayed home on the perimeter.
- Manu was amazing in the first half, and terrible in the second. In fact, that run that brought us back in was allowed by fast, early shots by Ginobili and the aforementioned defense on Duncan.
- The Hornets missed a ton of easy shots. Paul and West together bricked two easy lay-ins each, and Bonzi . . . well . . . let's not talk about Bonzi right now.
- I'm actually a little surprised West had 20 in the game. I guess when I think about it, he started off well. The second half, he was really poor. His five drives, three on Oberto, two on Duncan all dribbled over the rim and out.
- Oberto, Thomas, Udoka and Duncan were simply brutal on the glass. As soon as a shot went up, they'd form a little wall around the rim, and Tyson could only get to the ball by jumping over it and back-tapping it. On offense, multiple times Duncan or Thomas would just sneak in and take the ball away from the Hornets. Painful.
Okay, I'm done. I'll be back sometime soon to talk about the future. For now, I'll go mourn the present.

Congratulations to the Spurs! Very consistent and persistent as expected, and the better team this year. I hate the Spurs, but moreso the Lakers, so beat L.A.! I have plenty to criticize about the Hornets, but really, the only thing I want to just say was how happy I was watching the fans cheering at the end. It solidifies the pride and understanding of the fans of New Orleans. I was certainly frustrated for the lack of representation at the beginning of the season, but I think our fanbase is in good hands now. Great season. The tough part is getting better from here. Geaux Hornets!

The future can't get any brighter. We've got players who will continue to improve their respective games into last season, and a stud in Paul who just has no skill limits. We had a good time following the Hornets this season, always fighting for the top spot. Let's see how this offseason go, it'll sure go well as there isn't much to lose, so feel happy Until next tip-off New Orleans Hornets. (Las Vegas summer league tipoff, yeah)

Congrats to the Hornets. I was pretty upset with the very nasty blog trash talk on both ends, some of it got just classless. I have been a life long spurs fan (about 20 years) and overall NBA fan very rarely missing a game., so I feel I have some special perspective Your team plays the right way. Hustle, defense, and unselfish. We played that way for 10 years in the Robinson era before our first ring. It does take awhile, their are no just sudden surprises like in the NFL. A piece of advice: Keep this team and coach together, and be patient. We have a collection of very old players, but their lack of athleticism is overridden by a knowledge of what the others will do. It is so underated. Imagine Paul with these guys in just a couple of years, with that vision! What potential. There is no "magic player" you can get that will change this. It seems all of your players fit thier roles well. Popovich has a great quote about the stone mason striking a piece of rock 100 times without any noticebal change. Then, on the 101st strike, it happens. There are no shortcuts to greatness, just hard work, working together. I hope you guys keep this team together. We are riding off in to the suset, and you guys could have a real chance to take ownership of the west. Great effort, and be proud of your team.

Hey Aaron, thanks for your insight. While I'm inclined to dissent some of the thoughts, you offer civility, which is, in my opinion, the best approach. I think the Hornets mindset consists of 'hustle, defense, and unselfishness', it showed we really didn't execute very properly, especially the complaint of rotation and coaching. Also, to be honest, NOW I am strangely happy to have seen the Spurs hit open shots on the regular, because it proved to me the abilities of players on an elite team after years of watching scrub teams miss wide open shots, even inside 22 feet. I feel this was an important loss, because we lost AS A TEAM. While I deny playoff experience a factor, this does nonetheless help with the experience AS A TEAM, and allow us to bond more and grow AS A TEAM. I think offseason we can improve even with a blockbuster trade, but one thing's for certain: CP, DX, and the Repair Man are our core, and what a damn fine core to have. And with that, let the media rave on their expert calls regarding playoff experience.

I can attest for the fact that at least some of the fanbase was there ages after the end, watching the highlight video and still in the stands. Also, who are these people who seriously think the Spurs will get through LA? I don't make guarantees when it comes to my own team because, hello, superstitious, but... yeah.

First off, thanks to everyone for keeping the comments civil. I really appreciate that. I was dreading getting back home and reading Hornets fans calling for Byron's head or blaming the officials for the loss, and Spurs fans gloating "I told you so, ya'll suck!!!!!1" But there's been very little of that, and I'm glad. Second, I'm sorry you got stuck with this recap, Ryan. Tough one to write about. And third, I don't feel too bad right now. It took the defending champs 6 games and 47 minutes to beat us, and they did it by just being the better basketball team on the night. No shame in going out like that. This whole season has been one helluva journey, and I'm looking forward to even bigger and better things next year. I'll probably wrap more of my thoughts in a recap tomorrow evening, but for now let me just say congrats to the Spurs. Good luck against the Lakers, and hopefully we'll get another shot at you next year.

Such civility in here it's great. Yep, should say that the Spurs did play better in this game and they deserved it. Great job Hornets for coming this far! I will certainly be following your whole season and getting into the cheering early. :) GO HORNETS!!!!!!!! <3

I'd like to say, with all the tact and charm that i can, GO LAKERS!!!! I respect the spurs talent and intelligence, but I just can't root for the guys. I've hated Kobe since the Divac trade, so it is strange to be rooting for him as well. And oh yeh, thanks Hornets for a great season. And thanks again Ryan and Ron for helping me follow it all. Next year I'm relocating, and I'll be able to make a few games along with having the Cox sports channel. Geaux Hornets!!!!!

Nah, as the boys at the Basketball Jones advocate "Screw Hockey"! Uber sad, but kinda relieved as well. I'll definitely get more schoolwork done. Did we look a little directionless out there tonight? Missing the fundamentals? We never really got a chance to put this series away, so I'm not furious that we 'blew' it or anything. We played our hearts out all seasonand I'm stoked with that. Love ya Bees!

WOW, not decade but rather the whole franchise. Sans 2002-2004, the Sabres have been consistently good... but need to just get over that hump. Case in point for those not in the know, since induction in 1971 (!), the Sabres have only missed the playoffs NINE times. At least you can count on them MAKING the playoffs (I was a big fan of the Mavericks during the 90s. Not really heartbreak... more like failure). But why the heck are we talking about hockey?

Hey guys, Cavs fan here. But like LeBron, I'm a fan of Chris Paul too. I really enjoy the blog, so thanks for writing it. And I feel your pain about the loss. I think I was more upset about this game than the Cavs losing, just because I thought the Hornets had a better chance to go all the way and I absolutely loathe the Spurs. But really this was a great first playoff run, and you guys have nowhere to go but up. Good luck next year!

Lifelong Hornets fan here, dating back to the days of Muggsy, 'Zo and Johnson. I think everyone should just take stock of where this team came from, and what the expectations were at the start of the season. A new franchise record for wins in the most competitive, high-quality conference in history... the Runner-Up for MVP & best PG in the league, coach of the year, Potentially the finest defensive center since Dikembe Motumbo, Getting a great season out of one of the best shooters of his generation when many thought he was finished, and the player who resembles the spirit & progress of this team more than any other in David West. This is just the beginning everyone.

Wow - what a body blow that game was. I had almost forgotten how agonizing basketball is... it's more gut-wrenching than any other major league sport. I don't know if I've ever felt this way after a Saints or LSU football loss. It's really tough. Hats off to Pargo - he almost singlehandedly pulled it off. I was hoping that we could have found Peja for that potential equalizing three pointer, but Jannerro was hot, and he was wide open. He just couldn't quite finish off his run. This team was loads of fun, and we have a lot to look forward to. This was a franchise-saving season - I look forward to seeing all of you guys next November outside the Hive! The one last thing I wish for (even though I am not done watching the NBA for this season) is a Lakers/Celtics Finals. I think that the NBA had a great season, and if we want this league to be ashealthy and popular as possible, avoiding a Pistons and/or Spurs Finals is really important.

correction to my above post : I meant to say that I am done watching NBA this season. I just can't bear watching teams that I know the Hornets are better than (Celtics, Spurs) continue to play. I think we would have lost to the Lakers, but it would have been a ton of fun to see us take them on. Can you imagine what the city of New Orleans would have been like for a trio ofLakers/Hornets home games? Wow. Here's hoping we'll get to experience that at some point over the next several seasons.

As a Spurs fan, I remain convinced that the future belongs to the Hornets. As always, experience was served one more time in this series, but the Hornets will be the team that scares teams for as long as Chris Paul is around. Obviously, some upgrades are in order to get over the hump next year; some of it will come simply by virtue of Paul and West being another year older and more experienced. But as pretty much everyone has said, the bench needs a serious upgrade. While Pargo hit some big shots last night, where was he before then? He shot a staggeringly bad 27.9% from the field yet took the fourth most attempts on the team behind Paul, West, and Peja. Someone needs to let him know that it's NOT cool to take away shots from Paul and West. And I'm pretty sure that any time Melvin Ely is your primary backup big man, you're screwed. Bonzi Wells is finished. Luckily, the bench should automatically get better just by virtue of Julian Wright and Hilton Armstrong being a year older, and there should be some reasonable mid-level exception guys on the free agent market (Mickael Pietrus), and a few guys who will go cheaper that could help (DeSagana Diop, Eduardo Najera?). All in all, great series and great series guys. I hope we don't have to play you guys next year!

Random comments. I agree with the comment - it didn't look like we had a plan, seemed totally disorganized. Very Very sloppy shooting. I wish I had a buck for every shot we missed - I could fill up my gas tank. But all in all it was a great season. Again, Ron and Ryan thanks for your time all these great posts. In raw bitterness, I want the Spurs to sweep the rest of their series just to show that we were a better team than anyone gave us credit for. My whole row last night just sat there in stunned silence. Some cried. Thanks Hornets for a great season. Thanks George (words I never expected to say) for doing right by NOLA and giving us a hell of a team. Thanks Byron and his staff for taking us so far. It was a hell of a ride. GEAUX VOODOO!

wow, the hornets lose when they shoot the 3 poorly and the other team shoots the three well. i, myself, have noted earlier in the season something along this line as well: teams that score less points than the other team lose.

Why would New Olreans go with the white shirts instead of the weird looking gold. I'm pretty sure the sea of white was much more comfortable for the Spurs than the sea of yellow was in the previous three games. Got to learn to stick with what's working! Plus the fans where just a little two nervous and I really think it affected the team's play. Spurs will take out the Lakers in 6. I think we can all agree that the Suns and the Hornets were much better than the Nugs an the Jazz.

Mavs fan and season ticket holder from Dallas checking in here. Congrats to the Hornets for a great season. I'll admit I didn't give them much respect when the Mavs-Hornets series started, but I was awfully impressed by CP3 and the rest of them throughout the series. You guys have some amazing players and obviously a bright future ahead of you! Props to the classy fans of New Orleans as well. I was shocked to see everyone still in their seats cheering on the team at the end of last night's game. Dallas fans (myself included sometimes) have gotten spoiled over the past years and now feel entitled to wins every year - so it's refreshing to see some true appreciation from a fanbase! Looking forward to a Mavs-Hornets rematch in the playoffs again next year!

Sorry about that mess, could someone clean up comments number 40-41! The Hornets are great starting 5... we desperately need to address our miserable bench. Byron and Jeff should start looking at these free agrents now. I would keep Pargo , Juju, Wells and Armstrong (if you must) Childress, C. Delfino (our Manu), James Jones, Martell Webster, Nenad Kristic, Mickael Pietrus, and Chris Duhon. That is a low cost bench that I think we should Aim for.

@ Hornets Fans Hell of a series. I'm a Laker fan but I tuned into a lot of Hornets games this season to watch them the Paul-Chandler alley-oop parade and Wests money jumper from the elbow. Was looking forward to the Lakers-Hornets series I thought I'd be watching Wednesday night. Hornets crowds are way louder than LA crowds too...must be fun. Anyways, definitely be proud of that team; they took the defending champs to 7...and took game 7 to the wire without the standout performances you'll probably be seeing in the future from Paul-West-Chandler. See you next year. @ Hornets247 writers Great job with the blog. Been a pleasure to read all season. GL in the offseason. Happydaze
