So there you have it. The Boston Celtics: your 2008 NBA Champions. From rock bottom a year ago to the top of the mountain today.
Here's a few thoughts knocking around my brain as I wonder how I'll survive three-plus months without NBA basketball...
1) First and foremost, congrats to the Celtics. I actually thought the Lakers would win the series, but seeing the C's crowned as NBA champs was easier to swallow. I can't help but like Garnett, Pierce and Allen, and seeing those guys finally get a ring was sweet. As for the Lakers, Kobe and Fisher already have the hardware, and their teammates have plenty of time to get some.
2) I'm happiest of all for PJ Brown. He's one of the classiest players us Hornets fans have ever had the pleasure of rooting for. Best of all was that he didn't just latch on with the C's and ride coattails to get the first championship of his 15-year career. No, he made some huge contributions for Boston throughout the playoffs, and averaged almost 20 minutes per game in the Finals. He brought defense, rebounding and he frustrated the hell out of Pau Gasol every damn game.
3) With PJ coming up big for the Celtics, you can't help but wonder how far the Hornets could have gone if dude had instead signed with the team closest to his hometown of Slidell. I definitely think he would have put us over the top against the Spurs.
But then, could we have beat the Lakers in the Conference Finals? I would have said "no" before seeing LA get demolished by Boston these past two weeks. I know the Hornets aren't quite on the same level as the Celtics, but as ESPN's Mark Jackson commented during Game 5 on Sunday, the Lakers were getting crucified trying to defend the pick and roll, and the Hornets were perhaps the best pick and roll team in the League this past season.
Makes you think.
4) More than anything this morning, I wanted to hear what Kobe had to say after last night's game. His teammates really let him down in the Finals, and I was interested to see if he would criticize them in the media, or if he would take the high road instead. So far it looks like he's doing the latter, which is the smart move on his part. The Lakers have a great young team and they should have many more chances to win it all. They might lose a couple of pieces over the summer (Vujacic and Turiaf), but with Bynum back next season, Kobe carrying an extra chip on his shoulder, and more time for Gasol to fit in and learn the triangle, LA will be tough to beat.
5) Watching the Celtics fans at the Garden celebrate last night, I was thinking how that could be us Hornets fans at the Arena next season. It's not that hard to believe.
6) So, how many years do Boston have left with this group? How big is the window? They've got everyone back next year (except maybe Posey, who has a player option, and likely retirees Brown and Cassell), but they're not exactly a young team. How long before experience becomes old age and the C's go back to sucking?
I guess I just want to know if we can beat them in the Finals next season.

I think we had a fighting chance to take them this year. I think we had a fighting chance against either of them. We beat them both by substantial margins during the season.

We did split against both of them. Next year's going to be interesting. Nothing like this year. Well, maybe the play will be, but the pressures, the hype... Can the Hornets come back with the mental focus of that Celtics team? The difference was how they stepped it up in their Game 7s, while the Hornets didn't. Did you guys hear when they were STILL talking about Chris Paul when they discussed great playoff performances? A minute later they concluded, rightly, that Paul Pierce led his team to a championship and is therefore above everyone... but the fact that CP3 was in that sentence. In fact, that final "There can be only one" ad? Where they showed both sides of the players' faces for the first time, as sort of a salute to the playoffs? The Hornets were in it 4 times, ridiculous for a team that didn't even make the conference finals. Next year they're going to be on TV... A LOT. And inevitably there'll probably be Chris Paul backlash and people will stop looking at him like a breath of fresh air and start Kobe-fying him. Well. Those are all external things. How will the guys themselves respond? I hope they bring it. I can't believe it's so far away!!

I too, heard those comments about pick and roll defense by the Lakers. Also, they struggle against teams that shoot well from the perimeter and having slashing guards. We have Peja and CP. I felt we would have played them tough. And going into the Finals, I really thought our young legs and energy would take us a long way against the C's. But now, I'm not sure. They REALLY wanted it. And they got it. Can't wait until next year.

It's nice that we have a young team and so these what-if's don't sting too much. We've got plenty of years ahead of us to improve and try win it all.

Sorry to party-poop, but the most important aspect to the teal is health. Regarding this season, I'm not sure DX could've sustained his 'Mark-is-worshipping-you' production numbersconsidering teams (Spurs) were taking advantage of his tweaky nature, and I doubt any team in the league has the balls to actually want to play against ahealthy player versus an injured player. I mean for pride, maybe so, but money talks very loudly, especially with sports. And Ron, while I know this wasn't during his tenure at NOLA, PJ Brown was well-documented for his testy temperament (see: Knicks history). Oh well, he's the only player on both teams I wanted to see get a ring, hehe. Kudos to PJ, no kudos to anyone else! And another thing, I saw a video with (the inevitable) riots in the street over at Bean Town. I would be scared to see what happens to NOLA after our 'chip. Vandalism?

Congratulations to the Celtics. The best team won! I know the Hornets can beat the Lakers and I know they can beat the Spurs - just some kind of melt down in the last game. Tired I think. It was a great sports day in OKC Wednesday. The news all full of basketball. With CP3 being in town, The Celtics win, and the continuing saga of trying to get the Supersonics here. Just turn the page for the next chapter.

I wouldn't be concerned with Boston. The Hornets need to make it out of the West first before looking at Eastern competitors. Since the Lakers won let's have a quick look there. They've nobody on their roster with enough defensive discipline to defend Peja Stojakovic so the Hornets will have 3 legit 17-25ppg scorers in a potential series. That's a huge bonus that gives the Hornets a large advantage. The Lakers do not at this point defend the pick and roll well but it'll interesting to see what Bynum and Gasol can do next season. Gasol is 7-1 with a 7-5 wingspan, he isn't a great defender but he's tough to shoot over and that always let's him ahieve more defensively than he should (look at Boozer's, Duncan's KG's FG% in playoffs against him). He'll be on David West so that could play out in several different ways. If West plays smart he can drive all day from Sunday on Gasol ... then again he could do that against Kurt Thomas too but still preferred to attack the same way regardless. Bynum probably matches up with Tyson Chandler as well as anyone in the West. He has the athleticism to match Chandler and the rebounding to match Chander. His defense and offense were coming on leaps and bounds before injury so no ideas how good he'll be by the playoffs next season. Kobe Bryant is a huge matchup problem. Mo Peterson can't defend Kobe. Kobe knows that, Kobe sees a green light whenever Mo is on him, Kobe loves to play against Mo Pete. Like when he went for 81 points in Mo's face. It's not a pretty sight, it is a big issue and it's the issue the Hornets can solve the easiest. They've got nobody who can defend Chris Paul

Ron, honey...If P.J. had played for the Hornets we would have beaten everybody...the Spurs, the Lakers and of course the Celtics because they wouldn't have had him to help win. But what the heck...P. J. got his ring...the only thing he said was missing from his life and I'm really enjoying the reactions of all the Celtics after the win. Saw R. Allen and K. Garnett on the David Letterman show and Keven was so excited I thought he was going to explode. I'm very happy for them. But........... Next year is OUR YEAR! It's the Hornets' year. We are going to win it! You wait and see. Go, Hornets! And Go, CP3...you are the REAL MVP!
