My prediction was right. There will be no 1st round pick for the Hornets this year. No second round pick either, apparently.
Funny, isn't it? I spent so much time posting about how unlikely(71% chance of a bust) it is to get a viable player from a pick so late in the draft, but when the pick was sold, I can't help but feel a boatload of disappointment.
I guess a lot of that is how the pick was shipped out. I would have been excited to see it used as a sweetener for a trade for a veteran. I would have been pleased to see it used in the draft, even if the chances of a successful pick were small. I could have lived with the Hornets trading out of the first round and into the second to pick up multiple picks and cut down on guaranteed salary.
But to outright sell it to Portland for cash? Really? Have we not seen how poorly that has worked out for Phoenix?
I know this is a business. I know the Hornets have a long history of making moves solely to put a little more money in the bank: They reached an agreement with Peja to sign as a free agent, only to turn around and allow him to sign with Indiana and then be traded to us - giving Indiana a huge trade exception to play with - for a reported sum of $250k. Last year, we took on the contracts of Mile Ilic and Bernard Robinson from the Nets, allowing them to get under the luxury tax line. What did the Hornets get out of it? Cash payments. Reportedly, those cash payments covered the contracts value and then some, giving the Hornets a little money. I applauded those moves then - the Hornets aren't the most financially solvent ball club around, and every little bit helps.
This is different though. The Hornets are right there. I truly believe they are just two consistent bench players away from being a contender for the title. The 27th pick of the draft, no matter your take it's value, is still an asset, and the Hornets gave it away for cash. Is cash for the Hornets an asset? Yes. Is it an asset to the team on the floor? Not so much.
I'm sure there will be spin to this decision. There always is. Not selecting in the draft does free up around 1 million dollars of salary room over the next couple years, but I want to be honest about that number. Add that million to our other expiring contracts, and we are still not under the cap. With Peja, West, Chandler, Mo Pete and Paul's soon to exist extension, we won't be under the cap for another three years at best. That means the million can't be used to sign Free Agents from outside the team. The best we can do with it is throw it at a Hornets player who is now a Free Agent.(you can go over the salary cap to sign your own players) Maybe it's needed to resign Pargo - Or the team has decided to bring back Ryan Bowen, Chris Anderson or Bonzi Wells and need that million to get it done.
Those are all legitimate reasons for the trade, but I've seen those guys. None of them are the consistent bench player we need, not even Pargo. So it feels like - at best - we've dumped a player with unknown potential to retain an already flawed part. Hence, my disappointment.
Oh - one last thing - can you imagine how great it would be to be a Portland fan right now? A team of young, solid players and an owner who lets his GM be like a kid in a candy store, buying anything he can get his hands on. It's enough to breed jealousy and a desire to send Henry Abbott of TrueHoop(a Blazers Fan) a congratulatory note with lots of bitter undertones in an attempt to make him feel bad for his good fortune.
I'm not a petty man. Really. I swear.

I first read your last line as "I'm not a pretty man. Really. I swear." Anyways, I guess this whole trade is a little disappointing since it doesn't really help us do more in free agency. Our best option to strengthen the bench now seems to a trade. Hmm. And as for the Blazers, yeah, they're doing pretty good. Five picks in the draft? They can't help but get lucky a couple of times and find some guys who can contribute. It should be interesting to see who they pick at 27 and how he develops.

Good call on the draft pick. First thing I thought of this morning when I heard the Hornets got rid of their pick was this site predicting that very thing.

yo guys jonathan givony confirmed my source the other day when he also reported that Hornets had made a promise to Mario Chalmers to take him at 27. Preety much Hornets had 3 names penciled down and they were 1)Lee, 2)Chalmers, 3)CDR. Hornets were finnaly able to get CDR in for a workout yesterday and lets just say he struggled and the Hornets felt that he was not a player that could carry his success over from college to the NBA. So that all but ruled him out. Word also came in that Orlando has given Lee a promise at 22 and Mario was also able to get a promise somehwere higher up in the draft. Therefore, the Hornets main guys were all gonna be gone at 27. The real darkhorse was actually Sonny Weems whom the Hornets brought in for a second workout. Byron Scott loved this guy, but Hornets felt that they could probably get him later in the draft. Therefore, even though Hornets traded the pick away I still feel as though they may pick up a second rounder to grab Weems. Hornets are also looking at a number of different trades, but the asking price in all of them is Julian Wright and the hornets are trying not to trade him. Right now things are not looking to good for the Hornets. They have virtually no tradable assets outside of Julian Wright, they are trying hard to move Rasual Butler but no wants him. Mike James soon to be expiring contract might come in handy but unless you package that with assets you are not gonna grab anything. In FA Hornets will only be equipped with MLE and a large chunk of that is gonna go to Pargo if they resign him. Hornets also want some vetran presence andnames like Bruce Bowen, Robery Horry and James Posey are being brought up. The guy I spoke to was shocked and confused the Hornets moved this pick. he said that many within the organization were against the trade because they felt that the hornets needed to keep all the assets possible. He said that some of Bowers advisors told Bower to hang on to the pick until draft night and see if anybody falls. He said alot were frustrated at the fact that Bower made no effort to workout guys like Jason Thompsan, Nathan Jawai, JJ Hickson and ryan andersen. Also were also frustrated that he made no effort to put togather a full scouting report on Nicholas batum and Ante Tomic. My source seemed preety frustrated at the way things are heading because he feels Bower is too cautious in not repeating past mistakes of Vincius and Simmons. From what I can gather things are not looking to good for the Hornets moving forward this offseason as there are not enough tradable assets and not enough dough once they resign Paul and pargo.

also look for the blazers to do one of 2 things in this draft. a)Pick up Ajinca at 13, batum and 27 and Tomic at 33 and stash all 3 in europe b) word is that there are talks about a 13, 27, 2nd rounder+Outlaw+ Rodriguez+ Frye+ filler to NJ for RJ+ 10 in the works. IMO KP is just running circles around every GM in the league right now.

Really disappointed about the Hornets trading the pick..i was looking forward to seeing who may be around for us to take at 27..glad they're not gonna trade JuJu but there's no one else on the bench that's good trade bait..even though we get a little money, i don't like this trade at all

Interesting stuff Roland. Two things though - Jannero Pargo is a candidate for Early Bird Rights for the Hornets, therefore, any contract he signs with the Hornets does not count against the Mid-Level Exception, as long as that contract is no more than 175% larger per year than the previous contract. Paul's contract extension won't kick in until next year, so that won't impact what we can spend either. Bottom line: We'll have $7 million to spend under the luxury tax this year - which is in line with what we spent last year. We can sign Pargo to any contract that doesn't exceed 3.5million a year, and then spend use whatever's left as part of the Mid-Level. If we had drafted with the 27th pick, we'd have had 6 million dollars to work with.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Butler's and James' (if he picks up his player option) contracts expire in the summer of 2010? So shouldn't both be trade assets in teams locking to restock for the James/Wade sweepstakes? Especially teams that are fucked under the cap, like the Knicks?
