I've seen some confusion in various places about what selling the 27th pick means for the Hornets financially. For those of you who want to know these things, this is the financials for the Hornets:
The Hornets have $58.8 Million in Salaries currently on the books for Peja, Chandler, West, James, Peterson, Paul, Butler, Armstrong, Wright and Ely. (Ely hasn't indicated if he'll become a free agent yet.)
That number puts us over the cap right now. The Cap is not expected to rise very much, and last year it was $55.6 million.
Since we are over the cap, we can offer:
- Any number of contracts worth a total of $5.7 million per year to various Free Agents, using the Mid-Level Exception.
- A contract to Pargo, who holds Early Bird Rights (for playing a continuous two years with the Hornets); a deal worth up to $3.5 million a year (175% of last year's salary), OUTSIDE of the Mid-Level Exception.
- A contract to Bonzi Wells, who also holds his Early Bird Rights (his time with Houston counts; you can't lose your Bird rights through a trade), any contract up to about $4.0 million a year, OUTSIDE of the Mid-Level Exception.
- As many contracts as we want to players who will accept the veteran minimum.
BUT all of this spending is limited by the Luxury Tax line. Last year, the Hornets spent right up to that line, coming under it by a few hundred thousand. I would expect that we will do the same thing this year.
That line was set at $68 million last year. So we have about $9 million to spend.
If we had not sold the draft pick, we would have had $8 million to spend. The amount of money the Hornets got for the pick is undisclosed. Whether it goes into the pocket of Shinn or not depends on whether the Hornets make money this year or not.
An example would be; We sign Pargo for $3.5 million a year, Bonzi Wells for $4 million a year, and have $2.5 million to spend on a Free Agent Big like Ronny Turiaf.

Your example at the end would probably be our best case scenario this summer, unless we can rip somebody off in a trade like the Lakers did with the Grizzlies. But I assume Turiaf will get offered more money elsewhere. Whether he's worth more or not is debatable.

Oh, and I'm hearing that the cash we're getting from Portland amounts to $3 million.

Personally, I'd rather see if we can get Bonzi and/or Pargo for less than the maximum we can offer them. I think if we can offer Turiaf a 3-year 9mil offer, we could probably snag him.

While certainly I hold no particular interest in guesstimating non-pro player's abilities, I can say that I, for one, appreciate all the research put into analyzing the 27th pick. It's no easy task (even if you'rea fan of NCAA/EURO league), and the realization that this is a business is no easy thing to swallow. Kudos to you guys. With that said, I do wish we had an owner with the mentality of Mark Cuban. While I don't condone his antics (justified or not), his ability to essentially give the team to the fans truly displayed his dedication to the game. Granted, there are not very many fan-to-billionaire-owners in the league, but watching the Hornets go year after year of somewhat penny-pinching antics has me rolling my eyes a bit. Like hornets247 has already stated, yes, it is a business; I understand that. But sometimes, you just gotta make some sacrificies for the fans.

a)hey guys remeber that this not a done deal yet. If Courtney Lee or Mario Chalmers are there at 27 than I would be shocked to see the Hornets still pull the trigger on this deal. Over the past few days Hornets have been working under the assumption that these 2 guys wont be there. b)Hornets are still looking at other trade scenarios which involve moving up, down, out and or grabbing vetrans. Although the Hornets aren't really looking to move up, if the right deal came along they will explore it. c)I would be shocked if the Hornets did not trade for a second round pick and grab Weems. d)Hornets are thinking bigger than guys Jarvis Hayes and Grant Hill. They are thinking more in the line of Ron Artest and Corey Maggette to put them over the top. problem is if those guys dont go for MLE than you really buried yourself in a hole. e)Unless a package of Mike James, Hilton Armstrong and a future first rounder exites anyone I doubt hornets can make any big time trades. In conclusion the whole offseason is gonna be a boom or bust. If they get a player like Artest or Maggeete than they are championchip conteders immediatly. If they don't than you have to wonder wether guys like Diop, Duhon and Barnesare gonna be enough to solidify that bench.

@ Anonymous: I was under the impression that this was a done deal pending League approval. I'd love if they could hold off trading the pick until their favorite guys have been snapped up tonight, but I can't see Portland agreeing to that.
