No new breaking news yet about who the Hornets are pursuing on this, the first day of Free Agency. There have been rumors here and there that the Hornets will Pursue James Posey of the Celtics or Corey Maggette of the Clippers, but nothing concrete has cropped up.
Either of those two players are possible, but 'possible' is about the strongest word I can use. The Celtics would be fools to let Posey walk, and their window for a repeat is only good for a couple more years at best anyways. They should keep him. Maggette opted out of a contract paying him 7mil, and I have a hard time seeing him taking less money than that - and the Hornets can only offer a little short of 6 million.
We have been helped a little by Baron Davis and Elton Brand opting out of their contracts. With those two guys joining Gilbert Arenas in a Free Agent market that only has a couple teams that can offer much in the way of cash, it makes the available cash that much tighter. That could translate into Maggette taking the Mid-Level exception from some team. Still, I'm not sure I'd want the Hornets to passively hope that Maggette, who will be bound to get multiple offers of the Mid-Level Exception, would select them over the other teams. I've always believed that if there's a player you want, you should figure out what you're willing to give up for him, and make an aggressive play. So of course, my inclination would be for the Hornets to go hard after Maggette. I would love to have them see if the Clippers would bite on a Sign and Trade. How about:
Morris Peterson + Rasual Butler + a 2009 1st Round Pick for
Corey Maggette signed to a 5-year $40-45 million deal.
The Clips aren't exactly floating in wing shooters, having only a badly aging Cat Mobley, a Slashing non-shooter Al Thornton, and rookie Eric Gordon to play those positions. Adding Peterson as a solid big shooter and Butler as a possible defender/shooter who conveniently has an expiring contract the same year Thornton needs an extension seems like something they'd have to consider. And the 1st round pick is a nice sweetener.
If I were Jeff Bower, I'd also think hard about a package to try and pry Udonis Haslem from the Heat. With Beasley in the fold, they don't need Haslem so badly and Udonis can't really play the center position full time. With Shawn Marion also there, something has to give. Would Hilton Armstrong, Mike James, a re-signed Chris Andersen, and a couple second round picks be enough to get Haslem? Hilton and Andersen would shore up the Heat's hole at the center spot, and Riley likes veteran points. Mike James could be the ball-handling deep threat the Heat need to put next to Dwayne Wade.
So - that's my speculation for the day. Hopefully we'll hear something exciting soon.

Reading comments posted by Harvey hornet and GerryV on HR.com it seems like Hornets have already found their guys. Gerry hinted that hornets are gonna get a wing that is capable of starting at the 2, a big man and another bench swing player. Harvey floated out the idea of Lee being the big man in one thread. I would not be suprised if the Knicks looked to move Lee along with a bad contract like richardson and/or james to try and get contracts that run out quicker. Mike James contract ends in 2 years which is when lebron, bosh and wade are all free agents. How bout David Lee, Quintin Richardson and Jerred Jeffries for MoPete, Mike James, Hilton Armstrong and a future first round pick. Knicks lose 2 of their big, bad contracts and pick up James contract which is shorter along with Armstrongs contract which is shorter. MoPete has a long contract but he is a good fit in D'Antonis system. Knicks also pick up a future first rounder. Hornets meanwhile can make use of all 3 of those players. richardson is probably a better fit in the starting lineup than MoPete, and Lee and jeffries would help bolster our bench.

Sounds like you don't expect us to make much of a splash this summer without giving up a few pieces. I'd be happy if those suggested trades went through though, although part of me kinda hopes we keep Rasual and he can bounce back strong from a bad season and that fiasco in Miami.

I don't really think that Clippers would accept that kind of deal. There are other teams who can offer better pieces to Clippers. But you're right. This is no more a rebuilding team. Hornets should find players who can help them immadiately, and some sacrifice looks inevitable.

Drop Zul for his Miami antics and make an offer to Maggete straight up. Then pull a spurs/barry and pick up Zul a few weeks later. Have i gone too far or is it a possibility?

The hornets need to pry Chilldress from the talons of the hawks.

Can't drop Rasual and make a straight up offer, Adam. The Hornets are over the salary cap and can only offer 5.7 million in a contract to a free agent - which is probably not enough to get it done. That means either Maggette takes less money to sign with us for 5.7 mil or we have to trade for him - like I was suggesting.

I think it would be a steal, though unlikely, to get Maggette for those pieces. I've heard some Ben Gordon talk, but I don't feel he is that much of an upgrade over Pargo. Mickael Pietrus seems like a realistic option. He can play D, shoot the three, and run the floor with Paul. He reminds me a bit of a younger, more athletic Ime Udoka, who tore us up in the Spur's series.

Nothing matters till Chris Paul inks his deal, which looks like it is going to happen very soon. Today, at least, I'm a happy man. I know all the big names are gonna get all the headlines, especially early in free agency, and our real chances of landing a Magette or Posey are pretty slim, given wecan't give any better than a mid-level exception. How about someone like Ryan Gomes or Carl Landry? I know both of these guys are restricted, but neither of them are being talked about alot right now. They're both young, and would fill some need that the Bees have. I know Landry is a little undersized for what we're looking for, but he will battle underneath. What do y'all think?

Yup. Maggette is essentially left hoping that the 76ers or Grizzlies want to pay him. Otherwise, he HAS to take the mid-level from someone.

Basically, I feel tricked by Bower's draft night move, which all but promised an impact free agent pick up or two. If having some extra $$ was the key to doing that, then I was all for the trade of the pick. But if the only way to actually make an impact is by trades, then the $$ was not really about facilitating anything. It was about getting more money for George Shinn, plain and simple. Because if the Hornets can't work around the cap in signing a free agent, then they really didn't have any shot at making an impact without a whole lot of luck in finding trade partners with the right set of converging interests. Look at the last trade we made, where Bonzi Wells and Mike James came here for Bobby Jackson and Vinicius. We let go of a bad contract (Jackson) but got one even worse with a less productive player (James) for a longer period. The deal only would have worked if Wells had been a factor in the playoffs. He wasn't, and we're stuck. The only successful trade by the Hornets in the last maybe ten years, in fact (going back to the Kobe fiasco) was the one for Chandler, and that was only because we got lucky that Chicago was dumping him to clear cap room for Wallace. We can't expect to get lucky like that (Maciej Lampe? Baron Davis for nothing, since we were already on an express train to the lottery and Chris Paul?) this time. We're on the radar, now. People in our own conference are not going to hand us the missing pieces we need for a deeper playoff run. I wasn't unhappy about giving up the draft pick, since the Hornets are so generally bad at drafting (West, J.R., Paul, and Wright the exceptions, recently). But if the mid-level is all we have to play with, we're probably going to wind up splitting it between two journeymen who will get us maybe to the second round again. No wonder Scott only re-upped for two more years.

Knicks are desperate to get contracts to dump. Who knows, we could be looking at something like Butler/James for Crawford so they can be free in 2010.Or even David Lee and a scrub for one of those guys, though I would expect them to try to get more from Lee, who would likely have to be a sign and trade because he wants a longer contract.

I'd love to have Barbosa but he can get paid much more elsewhere. I think a guy like Barbosa or Monta Ellis would be a really nice compliment to CP in the backcourt.
