So Team USA has begun exhibition play in preparation for the Olympics, destroying Canada 120-65. The team fielded this year is crazy strong, and I would be astonished if they didn't trash the competition.
One thing, however, has irritated the hell out of me in the coverage of this team: Jason Kidd is being pushed as the savior of the team and at the same time being given the lion's share of the credit for Team USA's win in the Tournament of the America's last year. Some of the articles about him are downright fawning.
At this point, I'd love to get through one USA Basketball article that doesn't mention his record, gold medal, and "steadying, veteran presence". Just one. The guy is old, slow, can't shoot and completely self-absorbed. Deron Williams and Chris Paul are BOTH better choices to start over him.
Here's a recent interview:
Jason Kidd: So we're all here after I dominated that Canadian team. That makes me what, 46-0 for Team USA.
Reporter: That's including exhibitions, right?
Jason Kidd: Sure, yeah. Guess I didn't need to bring my gold medal along, huh? I left that medal at home, you know. I figured I don't need it because I never lose.
Reporter: So what do you think about the team this year? Going to guarantee a win?
Jason Kidd: Well, I am 46-0 now, so what do you think? The team is pretty good, and of course, it's got me. You know, a veteran presence and an actual pass-first point guard. Because I'm all about the team and not personal stats. All about the passing.
Reporter: Well, you got 0 assists tonight, but that's because of the team being unselfish and moving the ball a lot, right?
Jason Kidd: Absolutely. I set the tone, passed the ball, and of course they had to pass the ball. They need to follow me because I'm a veteran presence. And I don't shoot much, you know?
Reporter: Yeah - you didn't take a shot tonight in 16 minutes.
Kidd: See? I'm all about sacrificing my game. Passing. Playing hard defense. I do the little things, that's why I've got 100 triple doubles, man.
Reporter: Speaking of defense, your back-ups came in and really changed the defensive intensity. Generated turnovers, got the team flowing offensively. Coach K said they really made a difference and they played 23 and 21 minutes each. What do you think of Deron Williams and Chris Paul?
Kidd: Well, you know Deron's pretty good. Not an all-star like me. Not 46-0 like me. Maybe he'll be that good sometime, but not now. That's why he's not starting.
Reporter: Well, what about Paul?
Kidd: C'mon, he's alright.
Reporter: Really? That's all?
Kidd: Of course, he can't defend. He's small. Not like me. Didn't you see the playoffs? I posted his butt non-stop. He couldn't stop me. Just took him apart.
Reporter: Oh? I don't actually remember you scoring that much in the post in the playoffs . . .
Kidd: I told you man, I'm not about scoring. I'm about the little things. I got a couple assists a game out of posting him up, and he couldn't do a thing to stop it. Posting up isn't only about scoring, man. It's about rebounding and passing. That's why I've got 100 triple doubles and am 46-0 with USA Basketball, and he's got a bronze medal. I know how to defend and play the game the right way.
Reporter: That's great. There had been some concerns, you know, about the microfracture surgery you had on your knee and worries that you may have lost a step on defense. You are 35 now, and won a gold when you were 27.
Kidd: No way. I'm tough, man. My knee is fine, and I wouldn't let a little pain stop me anyways. I'm hardcore. Tough as nails.
Reporter: What do you mean?
Kidd: *Laughs* C'mon, you just said you saw the playoffs. You start pushing me, I'm going to make you pay, man. I'll give you a hard foul. Gave Pargo a hard foul. Do you think LeBron would do that? Carmelo? Dwight? No way. That punk thought he was so bad, scoring all those points. Stopped him cold.
Reporter checks paper: But Pargo outscored you 73 to 43 in that series.
Kidd: Exactly, he was getting all full of himself, you know? So I gave him that foul. Showed him who the all-star was. I don't let anyone show me up, man. No one, not Pargo, not that bitch Jouma . . . er . . . Jamal. Crawford. Yeah. Uh, what was I saying?
Reporter: That you're a tough defender.
Kidd: Right! It's that kind of toughness thats let me get a gold medal in 2000. I thought about bringing that medal you know. To show these guys what its like, that they could maybe be as good as me.
Reporter: That's great. Thanks for your time.
Kidd: No problem! Hey, remind me sometime to show you my gold medal when we are back stateside, okay?
Reporter: Sure. Great. Thanks.
True story. Really

yeah, but the 2004 team's roster was a young group, more importantly they (apparently) lacked experience playing international rules basketball ...

Ah...gotta love those "true story"s!!! But I disagree with you about Kidd on the USA Team. After watching the Canada game I really liked the way the team worked with Kidd on one team and then working Chris and Deron together. That was awesome. We'll get a better idea against a better team, but I liked what I saw. Kidd didn't get any assists but the stats don't always tell the tale. CP3 was awesome....and Michael Redd! Super!

Interesting that Kobe's rant in summer 07 was a tantrum about LA not trading Andrew Bynum for Kidd. Ooops! Then Mark Cuban panics, gets Kidd to be savior in Big D, and he stinks out the playoffs. Chris Paul couldn't help but yell, "He can't guard me!" On the bench, hiding his face behind a roster sheet, Byron Scott was smiling. If the team loses, it won't be because of Kidd, but because they're so thin at center. So I'm inclined to be charitable. "K" has the insurance policy he needs at point, and won't hesitate to put them in of the team struggles. After all, he's got an ego, too. So let Kidd have his last hurrah, as he gathers meaningless anecdotes in preparation for his next career as a self-absorbed talking head on ESPN.

Wow. I thought you were making it all up until I read "true story" at the end. I don't think Team USA needs anyone other than CP3 and Deron at the point. Between those two guys, you have everything that you could ever want a point guard to do. I figure both of them are better running the break than Kidd, too, because Kidd isn't as much of a scoring threat in the open floor. CP has that floater and Deron can just ram it down your throat. I hope those two guys end up getting most of the minutes at point guard because I'd much rather watch them than Kidd.

"mailto:F@#king">F@#king Haters Man! Give Kidd a break. It's not his fault people talk that way about him. He's 35 for chrissakes. I've never seen Kidd be anything but humble in his interviews. What was the point of this article? You never took any of your momma's advice did ya'?

Obviously nobody on here has seen CP or JKidd play international ball other than the Canada game Friday because you would have realized from 2006 that Paul's offensive game is just not suited for the zone defenses other teams play and can't handle the double teams when he drives in. He's a great defensive spark off the bench, but Kidd should start.

Right. Because an old, slow guy who couldn't defend the Hornets back up point guard in the playoffs is a better defender. And Chris Paul should be benched because two years ago - when he was a rookie - he didn't take over the olympic squad. Kidd managed 1.7 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in the Tournament of the Americas. Impressive. Not even a basket a game.

funny thing is, he's not even the best at passing on the team. So his only contribution is being old. Dude quit on his team and pretended to have a migraine and nobody called him out for it. I don't understand why the media keeps giving him a free pass on everything.

I hate Jason Kidd. He should just join the Spurs already so I don't have to hate the rest of the Mavs. Real bitch move what he did to JP in the playoffs. TC should accidentally kick him in the face then give him some of that Duncan crotch love. (I'm referencing the most fantastic alley oop I've ever seen circa the 2008 playoffs). Anyway, Kidd can eat a dick.

wow. i can't believe how many hornets fans hate on JKidd. you're all so jealous of the attention he's getting. unfortunately his IS more experienced and DOES has the record to show for it. he' s the team's best passer, by far, he's respected by the entire team, and he's a winner. what more do you want? i mean really, you've all taken a sip of the chris paul kool-aid. why dont you get off the man's cock?

How is he the team's best passer when both CP3 and Deron averaged more APG this season?

I have respect for Kidd as a player... I mean, how can you not? He will certainly go down as oneof the better PGs to ever play the game. Granted, this past playoff season he looked a bit like a washed up old man compared to CP... but hey, it happens. I'm sure Williams and Paul have lots of respect for Kidd, in fact I remember an interview with Williams in which he said Kidd was one of his heros growing up. Now.. Kidd as a person, from what I understand the guy hit his wife so that's an automatic strike against him right there. All that aside, that wasa funny interview.

Listen, for me, at least, this isn't a Hornets thing. I moved to Nola from New York. Was a Knicks fan (and boy am I glad to have moved...) I had nothing against Kidd until he quit on Byron Scott and got him fired from the Nets. Kidd can deny it all he wants, but I was up there watching the whole thing with front row seats. Byron is a tough coach to play for, no doubt. He doesn't give superstars breaks that other players don't get. But guess what, it was his hard work that took the Nets from a zero-team to championship contender. It was Byron who got them to the Finals 2 years in a row. Then Kidd was happy because it was "his" team. Butthey've sucked since Byron left. When Kidd finally realized that they weren't getting any better as fast as he was getting old, hetanked out until the Nets traded him. As for the Mavericks? I was ecstatic when they traded for Kidd. Our dangerous division rival mortgaged their entire future to win now. Only they got worse after the trade. The Mavericks are screwed. Their cap situation is atrocious, and one of their pivotal pieces, Josh "Cheech" Howard pulled a Vin Diesel and decided to go all Fast and Furious over his hometown highways. Sound like someone else is trying to tank their way out of town? So please, don't accuse our anti-Kiddism as solely based on the Mavs-Hornets rivalry. We're glad you got Kidd. Because he sucks. He is a cancer in the locker room whose ego outweighs any potential success on the floor. So, thanks to that trade, there's really no rivalry between our teams. We're going to stomp all over the division, and you'll be trying to make sure you end up ahead of the Grizzlies.
