Going unbeaten in the preseason has its rewards you know. Apparently if you make it through with nothing but W's, David Stern sends your team a cake with "Love and Lemons" written on it. Might not sound like much but I hear D-Stizzle insists it be the most exceedingly good kind of cake.
Time is short tonight because me and some solid folks hit up Handsome Willy's (site of the mega-party next week) post game and now it's all late and stuff. So let's do the game notes Gerry V style then hit the scratcher...
- Chris Paul and David West were in All-Star form. Their numbers were the far side of ridiculous for an exhibition game. See for yourself.
- Tyson couldn't get his offense working like he wanted to and that seemed to frustrate him and hurt the rest of his game. He made some key plays late, but not a strong performance at all for him.
- I love James Posey and both his socks. Dude was out there digging on defense, coming up with loose balls, diving out of bounds, knocking down triples. I'm real glad he's a Hornet. Interesting to note too that he played more minutes than starter Mo-Pete, and he was out there with the other four starters down the stretch. I expect that will often be the case this season.
- Hilton Armstrong didn't have a masterful performance by any means, but he pulled some kind of wizardry in the fourth quarter when he got blocked, chased the ball down on the baseline, whipped a dribble behind his back and then dropped a no-look to Melvin Ely for an easy two. Reminded me of the time Neo stopped them bullets.
- Rasual Butler continued with his aggressive play, looking to attack whenever he was on the floor. Didn't always turn out too good for him tonight but I hope he keeps his head up and stays assertive. I figure his biggest problem last season was losing all confidence when he got into a bad slump.
- Pink.
- Free throws and rebounds were not pretty for us tonight. Pacers shot a high percentage for most of the game. Lots of open jumpers and they made us pay.
- Trailing for most of the fourth quarter, but the Hornets never flinched and finished it out like a serious team. The Pacers were just trying to hang on, no killer instinct.
- We were definitely in regular season mode for this one. Starters played more realistic minutes, CP and West had it going. Not an altogether great team performance, but the effort was there. Maybe not the concentration, but definitely the effort. If that makes sense.
- Devin Brown DNP. He really is looking like the odd man out.
Methinks I failed miserably at the Gerry V thing. There can be only one. Hornets will wrap up the preseason on Thursday against the Miami Heat in Mobile. Eyes on the cake-shaped prize.

I kind of respect the Pacers for trying, considering how badly they got destroyed 2 weeks ago. But the Hornets were having none of it. I kept watching the bench at the end of the 4th quarter, seeing David West and Chris Paul with no ice on their legs yet, and thinking, "Yeah, Byron Scott is totally going to do it. Cruel." Also I totally forgot that Jarrett Jack was on that team, and I got all excited. Because I just think his name sounds like a great pirate name. Arrrr... Also, on one play, Chris Paul actually caused T.J. Ford to fall over, so completely did he burn him. I'm in awe of him.

Couldn't spell hepl defence in this game... Pacers got alot of open looks, and to their credit, they knocked them down. Indy can give some of the East contenders fits when they get healthy and learn how to close out games. I see them making another run at the 8-spot in the east, only to fall just short again. Danny Grainger is a beast... he is a legit budding star. They should reserve a spot on the all-star roster for this kid, but its tough to play forward in the East right now though with KG, Brand, Bron, Jamison and the like. Good luck Danny. If Posey can keep this kind of play up all season... I don't want to hear ANYONE saying we over-paid this dude. He is just amazing. For those of you who weren't at the game, there was this play he made in the 4th quarter where he jumps in front of a bouce pass, and while the ball is going out of bouds, he dives and tries this volleyball spike to a teammate halfway across the court. The ball went out of bounds, but its just a sign of things to come. October 29th cannot get here fast enough.

Yeah Mikey, a lot of things Posey does doesn't show up on the stat sheet. Dude is a hustler. That's why he wears those big knee pads. He don't mind getting down there for that ball.

I feel left out. The game wasn't on League Pass or anything in the West Coast. I just got the audio version over the internet. What else happened in the game? Peja? How did Ely do? When's JuJu coming back?

I'm still nervous about our bench. Hell, they only produced 23 points, and left it up to the starters to finish off the Pacers!

@ Hornets-Saint: I think 23 points from the bench is about what we averaged last season. I doubt they'll manage much more than that this year, unless maybe JuJu or Hilton really make leaps. @ Stefan: Peja was decent, knocked down some threes. He was guarding Granger for most of the game, even when Posey was on the floor, too. I'd like to see Byron give Peja an easier defensive assignment some nights; might make him more effective offensively. Ely looks a little sharper than last season, but he's still a bit of a black hole down low. When the Pacers showed some zone in the second quarter, twice Ely found himself surrounded by three or four defenders in the post but tried the shot anyway. As for JuJu, I believe he's being rested until opening night.
