Great game for our guys in Phoenix tonight. The Suns suffered through billions of turnovers and some rough calls through the first three quarters, but it looked like the momentum had swung in their favor as Peja Stojakovic limped off the floor midway through the fourth, right as an unsypathetic Amare Stoudemire rammed one home to shrink our lead to five.
But we had guys step up. Guys like James Posey, Morris Peterson and Rasual Butler. Thems be the Hornets on national TV, kicking ass in unusual ways.
Notes...
- Chris Paul didn't play well. And yet, Chris Paul finished with 20 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. He's so good, even his not good is pretty damn good. If you didn't see him play tonight, I'm calling it a sub-par performance because he shot poorly (6-14 FGs) and turned the ball over five times. He had three turnovers in Oakland the night before. A little uncharacteristic for CP.
- Let's all hope Peja's okay. Craig Sager reported that he went to the locker room for treatment, but told Byron Scott he felt he could get back out there and finish the game. So that's good. He rolled the right ankle playing defense, but it didn't look awful. I'm guessing he won't play Saturday against Cleveland, but beyond that the Hornets don't play until the Hawks come to town on Wednesday. Almost a full week to rest up.
- Peja was having a real nice game before he got hurt. He poured in 11 points in the first quarter and finished with 20 on 7-13 FGs. He and Matt Barnes were going at it pretty heavy with the trash talking late in the second quarter. Not sure how Barnes can talk smack about anybody with those fantastically crap tattoos.
- No Tyson tonight. He warmed up but decided not to play, that ankle still bothering him. Hilton Amrstong started at the pivot, and while the box score doesn't show much from him, I thought he played a great game out there, matching up with Shaq most of the night and not backing down one bit. He seems more focused on every possession nowadays. Last season it was like he was tuned to a different station on every second play.
- Ely also gave us good minutes, at one point even prompting Doug Collins to say he was reminiscent of Moses Malone -- easy on the whiskey there, Dougie -- but in the fourth quarter Byron opted to go small, with David West playing the 5. I'm not sure if that was us adjusting to the Suns -- who didn't play Shaq for the last 15 minutes of the game -- or vice versa, but it worked out pretty good.
- Collins was also fascinated by David West's "newly developed" shooting stroke. Yeah, the Hornets weren't on national TV much last season.
- Rasual Butler is on the fast track to redemption. He was everywhere during his 19 minutes, and came up real big for us in the fourth quarter. There he was jab-stepping in the corner with six minutes left, pulling up and nailing the triple to make it an 8-point game. The next Hornets offense lasted 64 seconds, with Rasual responsible for getting after one offensive board and tipping it out high for the reset. Then at the 4-minute mark, he's sprinting down the floor to swat Grant Hill's layup out of bounds. Loving your work, Rasual.
- Ryan was on the money when he said the Hornets were going to make it rain from three this season. 13-24 from deep tonight, five of which came in the last seven minutes.
- The Suns dancers could do with a better stylist.
- Mo Pete led the team with 21 points. 7-10 from the field, 4-6 from deep. And all without his headband. He might be on to something there.
- Yeah, Posey's addition is kind of a big deal. Back-to-back charges on Leandro Barbosa, dagger threes in the fourth quarter, relentless hustle throughout the ballgame. If I could travel back in time to a year ago, I'd be checking out every Celtics game just to see Posey play.
- Incidentally, Shaq was benched right after that play where he pushed Hilton Armstrong into Nash, sending Steve flying to the ground. I like Shaq, but that was stupidity of the highest order. Not a good idea to be throwing 6-11, 235 lbs. missiles at your star point guard.
- Watching this game with Mikey, he doesn't much like Byron bringing in Mike James for CP so early. I kinda like the experiment. Way I see it, James gets thrown out there with the big guns and runs the offense rather than feeling obliged to fill it up, while Paul has more gas in the tank come the fourth quarter. And even if it doesn't work, best to be trying this stuff in the early part of the season.
That'll do. Our Hornets roll home to the Hive unbeaten. Get past LeBron, and we've got the Hawks, Bobcats and Heat to pick on before the Lakers come to town. Makings of a great start right here.

It was a rough night for me, I woke up 3 times during the game lol and couldn't stay up from 3:30 to 5 but fortunately due to the beutiful internet I was able to download the game.
It's an important win for the Hornets, it's always better to go up 2-0 early in the season especially with having Lebron knocking at the arena door in the third game.
What concerns me the most is the big men rotation. Hilton played really good tonight but I still feel we are too weak with the big guys, lets say Ty goes down and Hilton has one those slump like games that he had so often last season? I think we should still try to sign P.J Brown maybe after December or something to have a big guy off the bench who knows what he is doing.
Overall I loved what our SF/SG guys did tonight. It feels like Posey's presence is making Mo Pete feel a lot more confident, he did tonight what he did in Toronto, not only spot up shooting but also so drives to the lane bringing those And1 plays, real good stuff from Mo this game! I hope he will gain more fans this season, the guy deserves it!

Don't forget Rasual Butler. The dude made some huge plays. He practically leapt out of the Arena to get that offensive rebound tip in the fourth that ended with a Posey three. I've also always loved his shot blocking - I'm so glad to see his offense good enough to let him show it off.
Devin was bad again. He looks heavy and out of shape. Honestly, I can't wait until we see the inevitable Armstrong-Posey-Wright-Butler-James 2nd unit. I'd also go for an Armstrong-Ely-Posey-Butler-Wright 2nd unit.

Yeah Devin Brown looks a bit out of shape for now, but with a good bench that I see we are getting this season we might be able to work on him as the season is progressing. It's not like two seasons ago when we needed him to contribute right off the hook. But well he did very good that time.
As for Sual Bop I was impressed, really impressed tonight when he worked it out. I see that BS was right in believing in that guy, great coach and good attitude can do wonders for the team.

Hopefully this kind of game can give some confidence to our back-up bigs and to Rasual. I thought they all had a very productive games last night. Back-up point guard is emerging as a HUGE concern going forward. MJ doesn't look comfortable right now, and Devin Brown looks like he's losing a battle on all fronts for playing time.
Oh, one more thing... I think I'm falling in Man-Crush basketball love with James Posey.

Not sure I agree with your assessment of Hilton Armstrong. When he did play Shaq hard, he fouled the shit out of him (including that ridiculous flagrant). When he backed off because he didn't want to pick up any more PFs, Shaq easily bodied him and scored. There doesn't seem to be much of a safe median where he can play effective D and not commit obvious fouls. He also turned the ball over a couple of times including one really silly play when he was standing under the basket daydreaming and fumbled the ball when Chris passed it to him. Honestly, I thought Ely had a much better game. Either way we definitely felt Tyson's absence.

We rained 3's and that's a good sign. Keep it up and championship rings are dreams no more. Any word on Peja's injury yet?

Mo-Petes' defense was more than solid as usual and his offense was stellar. He made a couple of crazy shots plus the foul and had a lot of fun with it! :-)

Nothing solid on Peja's status yet. I'll post it as soon as I know.
@stormsurge: Yeah, Mo was real nice. Phoenix left him open, he spread the floor and he hit his shots. That's all he has to do on offense. He'll have those opportunities all season.
@Jared: Yeah, he fouled Shaq hard a few times, but overall I was very impressed with him stepping in for Chandler. I don't so much mind what numbers he puts up so long as he's out there focused and trying hard on every play. He definitely did that last night. Plus, he's got 6 fouls, Shaq can't shoot free throws, might as well use them up and put him on the line. As for that fumble Hilton had, that was a great pass by Chris but it was a bullet. Tough to catch, I doubt even Tyson would have grabbed it. It was really a position thing on that play; Hilton wasn't facing the ball, so he had to twist back to try catch it at his shoulder. I'm sure Kenny Gattison will be showing him that on tape today.

Hilton has still problems with his confidence. And I can't get it. He has some talent, he earns guaranteed money and he will play even if he makes some mistakes, because coach believes in him and nobody can teach his combination of agility and size. Come on Hilton, show some fun and passion out there even if something isn't coming off at times. Man, does somebody has his E-Mail?

My only goal for this year is a championship, so I'm going to be kind of negative even though we won.
Butler did a great job last night might shouldn't Julian Wright be getting minutes over Butler. I was really hoping JuJu would be a huge part of the second team.
Second West is a beast, but Stoudamire man handled him in the during the Suns mini run in the fourth. He also needs to stop complaining about every call.
I hate Mike James; he has such a waste of space.

@ choco... West shouldn't feel special about Stoudamire man-handling him for a stretch of a game... Stoudamire does that to every other PF in the league. The dude is a freak of nature, but he's still a liability on defense. I thought West's numbers, coupled with a couple guys off the bench, pretty much cancelled out his scoring. Ju Ju is still nursing a sprained ankle he suffered in Europe during the preseason. He suited up last night though.
Hilton has put together two ok games. He's made some mistakes, but it looks like he's getting to his spots better on offense. He's also probably one of the most underrated shot-blockers in the league (he had 2 in the 1st quarter last night). What I'd like to see from him in the coming weeks is some consistency. We really need to cheer for him loud on saturday night, especially if Tyson can't go. Come on Hilton; don't be a box of chocolates... We want to KNOW what we're gonna get.

I'd just like to say that many of us have our hopes a bit too high for Peterson right now. I'm not ready to believe he'll be a lot more productive than last season just yet. He had great games against the Suns last season too. I'm hoping for 13ppg from him this season.
As fas as our back up bigs, both played well last night. Ely is stronger, but slower. Armstrong is weaker, but faster and more active. They both helped in various ways, but I don't think either of them can play well in the long haul and the playoffs. We need more help.
Back up PG is my biggest concern. Mike James doesn't seem like he can get the job done. If we can get the Devin Brown back from two years ago, I'd be perfectly happy with that.
& Mikey, you're not alone! I'm falling in Man-Crush Basketball love with James Posey too! I don't think I cheered more for a new player on a team ever in my entire life.
Did anybody watch his interview after?
He's such a nice guy. Reminds me of CP in some ways.

+1, StefanC. I'd be surprised if Mo-Pete hits double digits this year, simply because there are so many guys around him that play similar games and positions (Brown, Posey, Wright when he comes back). We might have our hopes high.

@ At the Hive: I would be surprised too. That's why I'm only "hoping" for 13ppg from him. I think about 8 is more realistic, just like last season. If we can get Rasual Butler, Julian Wright, Posey, and Mike James to all flirt around 10ppg, we would be unstoppable! Again, that's a big hope too.
I'd like to hear any trade proposals that any of you guys would like to see for us this season. Any??

I'd say we should only be encouraged by these two games. So let's go easy on Hilton. Really, how many starters in the league can handle Shaq well? There's a reason he has four rings on two teams, three finals MVPs and a regular season MVP: the man is awesome. Even today, a bit older, he's still better than most centers. Like Niall said, the man had fouls, and used them. Smart. But he also knew when not to foul. Listen, anyone who's seen Shaq play over the years know that even a solid hack is not usually enough to stop him from dunking right through you. You need to wrap the man up, and sometimes that's just not possible. Hilton played hard and showed some grit (including those three blocks), and for now, that's enough.
I'm not ready to hate on Mike James yet, either. Let's not forget our back-up "PG" last year really just ran down and jacked up shots like he was coached by Don Nelson. It's obvious Byron trusts him enough to try and get him running the offense, not just jacking up shots. Has he done it yet? No. But am I patient? Sure.
Especially with two wins on the books.

I think Mike James can still run our offense, and Hilton can still be a decent back up Center. It's just that I believe this is not enough to win a championship this year. The Laker bench would eat our bench alive right now. If Hilton, MJ, Devin, and Rasual all improve, we still have a chance, but realistically I don't see that happening. I am hoping that will happen though.
Hey with Byron Scott as our coach, anything is possible isn't it?

Also, just cuz I'm a crazy man when it comes to Hornets Basketball, I noticed two things:
1. So, last game we played the Suns and the Cavs are next. Well guess what!? The last time we played the Suns the previous season, we won by a game winning shot by Peja Stojakovic. Last time we played the Cavs, we won by a game winning shot by David West! Just a coinkydink I thought of
2. During the off season, we lost Jannero Pargo aka JP. Then we signed James Posey aka JP! So we never did lose a JP. Amazing huh? (I'm sure others have noticed this too)
