It's no secret that the Hornets have been struggling this season. The offense has often looked stagnant, the defensive effort has been lacking, and Bill Simmons thinks he has a feeling that maybe there could be some tension brewing between Byron Scott and Chris Paul. Recent beat downs of some of the L's worst teams hadn't given me much reason for optimism as the Hornets rolled into Denver to play the red-hot Nuggets tonight. Right at game time, we learned that Tyson Chandler would be unavailable, and then the Hornets came out of the gate like they were drunk on stuffing and dug themselves into a 12-4 hole. I was about to hit the whiskey and call it a night.
But then our guys sobered up, the shots started dropping, Kenyon Martin was Kenyon Martin, and before you knew it we were witnessing the best performance of the young season by the Hornets. It came down to the wire and we emerged with the W, but I would have had little to complain about even if we had lost the game tonight. It was a great team effort, a win we worked hard for and truly deserved.
Let's get to some of them green bean casserole flavored bullets...
- Rasual Butler stepped up big-time. Most of his 19 points came in the first 30 minutes of the game, but he shot the ball real well and also did an admirable job slowing Chauncey Billups. Seems Byron opted not to have CP guarding Billups too much, and Rasual's lanky D was a big reason for the Nuggs' point guard finishing with just 12 points (4-12 FGs) and 5 assists. Worth noting too that this was the first home defeat for Billups and the Nuggets since the Iverson trade. They were 5-0 coming in.
- Great job keeping the Nuggets off the line. They only got up four free-throws in the first half, and finished with 22 attempts total. They average about 33 a game on the season.
- I really liked that neither of our All-Stars went off tonight, we were without two starters, on the road, against a serious ball club, and we still came away with the win. Maybe we need to get back that underdog mentalityto get rolling again. Damn lofty expectations and Finals predictions might have had us in a daze.
- And yeah, I realize that Chris Paul finished with 22 and 10 tonight, but I didn't think it was one of his better games. Only then I saw that he had a plus/minus of +21, so I'm probably a dumbass.
- West struggled plenty. He front-rimmed just about every jumper he took and had numerous costly lapses on the defensive end. He did come up with a big bucket off a CP airball down the stretch, but it was definitely a forgettable game for him.
- Kenyon Martin killed the Nuggets out there, and I'm not just saying that because I don't like the guy. He couldn't knock down those open 17-footers, he looked lost on defense (resulting in a bunch of open shots for our guys), and he got called for a costly technical with 85 seconds left in the fourth. I'm oh-so glad he's not on my team.
- For his first trick, Sean Marks will dunk on your ass.
- The Hornets shot 12-23 from deep, and 27-29 from the line. Them's good numbers. Peja dropped 4-7 from behind the arc, his first time shooting better than .500 from that distance all season. Posey also came up big with a huge-mega-collossal triple with 19 seconds left in the game. He does that sometimes.
- J.R. Smith killed us. He was on fire all game, finishing with 32 points on 13-21 shooting. He was hurting us inside and out, burning a few different guys that Byron put on him. Smith scored 9 points early in the fourth but then Posey switched to cover him for a few minutes and that was the end of that.
- The offense is getting better. Slowly but surely. The hot shooting helped disguise some of the same old problems tonight, but there were numerous offensive trips where the stagnation was really evident. For example, that deep three that Chris hit late in the fourth was pretty much a desperation heave after a bunch of dribbling and not much movement. Likewise, that late tip by West came about after we held the ball for an enternity, then ran a pick and roll which resulted in CP heaving a fadeaway over Nene. We were lucky that those shots dropped tonight. There's still a lot of progress that needs to be made.
I'll leave it there. Hornets back at it in Portland tomorrow night. Gonna be a tough one, but hopefully TC will be back and the confidence will be up after tonight's big win.

Great game tonight. Like you said, we were down two guys, West struggled, the Nuggets tried to take CP out of the game and other guys like Peja, Posey, and Sual stepped up. That's already a big improvement from last year and what we've seen in other games this season. I heard Doug Collins say that after tomorrow we have 5 games in the next 15 days. Hopefully that will give Coach Scott time to really work on putting in some new offensive sets.

"For his first trick, Sean Marks will dunk on your ass."
Priceless. But I wish I got to see it. Started work as a graduate accountant this week so no more streaming of hornet games unless there's one on the weekend. How do you guys manage to work and keep this blog up to date? Good employers???

That game was crazy... nearly gave me a heart attack, but our guys came up big down the stretch. CLUTCH like a mutha... D west with the tip in despite a subpar game, Paul with the loooong three, Peja with the late 3, Posey with the the late 3... making up for his silly foul the play previous. Great stuff. And like you said... this was one of the first games of the season where I felt like, even if we lost it, we really played hard and played well for most of the game.

Agreed on all points about David West, though let's bear in mind that he spent significant time at the 5 spot tonight. I do believe that every 6-9 power forward should do some community service at the center position and it's good for every team... just imagine if injuries mandate this for long periods of time... but that certainly had a hand in his performance.
What could have made things easier is if Armstrong had decided to make himself a roster player, instead of amassing five fouls in what, 11 minutes? We talk a lot about his stupid turnovers but I think we should also be dedicating some of our creative energy to his stupid fouls.
That said, we really really need a dependable big man off the bench, so I am irrationally optimistic that he will just magically become that. So kudos to Hilton for shooting 100% from the field last night. Nice dunk in the open lane too.

@ Johnny Utah: Two words: Sugar Mommy.
@ Caveman: Great point about West at the 5. I overlooked that. I didn't mention Hilton or Ely in the recap either, but yeah, both those guys gave us solid minutes. Devin Brown was a little disappointing out there. He forced up two real bad shots in the fourth, though one was necessary due to the shot clock.

Down the stretch, I didn't really like our offensive shots. Although it was clock management, we were forcing shots at 3 seconds. Luckily down the stretch we hit some big shots. Clutch.
The best thing tonight was ball movement. We had a few plays where we penetrated, dished it outside, then swung it around until the Nuggets just went D'Antoni and hit the trey. Certainly helps when your 3's are dropping (52 percent?), but this is what I was complaining about when we ran a stagnant offense where we would force a shot after one pass.
Aside from some bench issues, thought our effort was decent throughout. Hopefully we can replicate it tonight.

Thats about as big a win as you can get in November. The Boys needed that for confidence sake.

I really question why Byron didn't go back to Hilton late. Yes, the man had 47 fouls, and a few TOs. But he came out really aggressive, got some boards, shot well when he had the opportunity, and got to the line a few times. I know that Nene used to play the 4, and so maybe Byron was okay with putting West on him, but it just seems risky. As much as Byron's liked his progress, I guess this shows how much he really trusts him.

As far as Hilton goes, he did play well when he did manage to stay on the floor but 5 fouls in 11 minutes (4 turns)...I don't even understand him sometimes. Anyone remember that great game he had back in '06 against the Pistons? I remember watching and thinking, "Man, this guy might actually pan out." I've never seen the Hilton we saw that night and I don't really understand why. Of course I don't expect the same amount of production because he's a backup and doesn't get a ton of minutes, but more often than not he produces little or doesn't produce at all.

Great game. I thought CP3 looked really good - he gave us a lot of energy, guess he was tired of loosing to normal teams. I am so happy that Byron has let Rasual out of the dog house. He must have been working his butt off this summer, he reminds me of the Rasual of old. Unfortunately, Denver let JR out of the dog house too HE reminded me of the JR of old.
@louisianasyi - I remember that game in Detroit well. That's when I knew Hilton and Brandon Bass could play ball. What really surprised me about that game was their great performance was for not. We never saw them in a lineup like that again. I've always had a strong sense that Brandon Bass could play really good - now he has been working over in Dallas.
And for Ryan - Lets go burn up some trails in Portland!!!
