I really shouldn't complain too much about the game tonight. A 2-1 result on this road trip was about as good as I had hoped for. Beating the Nuggets last night was a nice surprise, but taking out the Blazers in Portland on a segababa is a lot to ask. The Rose Garden is a tough place to steal one.
Our guys held tight for about 30 minutes tonight, despite some hot three-point shooting by the home team. But the energy was with the Blazers all night long, and it finally broke open for them in the second half, when they ripped off a 17-0 run spanning the third and fourth to put the game away.
Let's get to some bullets. I had some people over (gotta share that League Pass), so there's probably a lot I missed tonight. Feel free to chip in with your take in the comments.
- What was once our strength has often been our weakness this season. By that I mean Chris Paul dominating the ball on offense. Defenses couldn't keep it out of his hands last year and that was always a good thing for us. But now it might be the biggest cause of our horribly static offense. We depend much too much on him probing and creating shots for others, and he struggled doing that tonight because, once again, his teammates were busy standing still on the perimeter. Not good.
- Gotta give credit to Portland for the D on Chris, too. They doubled him in the backcourt after every made field goal for most of the game. Denver tried something similar last night but they got burned because we had a bunch of guys on fire. Not so much tonight. Peja was our only consistent scoring threat out there, finishing with 21 points on 8-14 shooting. That's his season-high.
- West struggled. He got a lot of attention on D, so no big surprise that he shot 5-15 and scored just 10 points. I can't be mad at him for those offensive struggles, but I really wish dude could have a positive impact on a game even when his scoring is taken away. But no. His rebounding continues to be woeful (3 boards tonight, averaging 6.6 now on the season), and I can't remember the last time he had a good defensive game. His passing out of those double teams is always wince-inducing, too.
- Note to the Blazer announcers: Tyson Chandler is not a big-time shot blocker. He's not a big-time anything right now.
- What was with that bar chart they showed at halftime? Hornets: 6 turnovers. Blazers: 6 turnovers. But the Blazers bar was longer? What, were their six turnovers better than ours?
- Brandon Roy was great. 25 points, 10 assists, 6 boards. He can do it all, and he makes great decisions with the ball in his hands. As Mikey put it, "he out-Chris Pauled Chris Paul tonight."
- For his next trick, Sean Marks will hit a three in your face. (And then he'll proceed to miss his next two jumpers, but whatever.)
- Speaking of the bench, they weren't horrible tonight. Posey gave us a real nice scoring punch in the first half, Hilton gave us 8 points and 3 boards (and a turnover), and JuJu was nice in very limited minutes. Devin Brown had his second straight bad game, shooting 1-8 FGs tonight. You love that he takes it hard to the rack, but sometimes that's just not there for him. Dev also got burned by Roy numerous times on the defensive end, but holding that dude down is a lot to ask of anyone.
- Can we please stop complaining to the refs so much? Sure, there were plenty of bad calls in the game tonight, but barking at the officials makes things worse, not better. Apparently the Blazers announcers commented that the Hornets complain more than any other team in the League, and it's hard to disagree with that. I wish we'd just shut up and play. Our biggest problems have nothing to do with the refs.
- CP and Tyson both had 6 rebounds tonight. So that's three times in the last four games that our shortest player has led the team in rebounds. Hmm.
Alright, back home we go. We actually get to rest up until next Wednesday, when the Suns roll into town. Steve Nash sat out their game against Miami today with a bruised right thigh. We'll have to keep an eye on that.

Totally agree with that. It's aggravating as hell to watch for me, personally. There's always gonna be some questionable calls. You take it and you move on

Couldn't agree more. I stated this last season, and i'll repeat it now. As a guy who has refereed his fair share of games at the summer college level, you play basketball against the other TEAM. You're not playing against the officiating crew. Tell you what.... make every shot, and we'll make every call! Deal?

WHY is Julian getting such limited playing time? It can't be because he isn't running the offense properly, since there is no freakin offense right now. At least he brings energy and CUTS to the basket!
I'm still voting for CP3 and DX for the all star game, but no way D-Weezy deserves it right now. Focus dude! And Tyson looks like he doesn't want to get his name called. Ever. Although he seems to have crippled Oden out there, which is satisfying.
Also, I'm unspeakable pissed at nba.com right now. The video recap for the game announces the Portland Trailblazers hosting the CHARLOTTE Hornets. That is absolutely unacceptable for the organisation's worldwide media outlet to get that wrong. Dickheads.

For a fun math stat, and those of you who care and actually think this first month of the schedule is an actual sampling of the whole season... here is a fun stat for you. Extend our current 9-6 record over the course of the whole season, and you get 54-28... pretty damn close to last season.
Of course this doesn't matter at all... I'm just trying to kill the doom and gloom. Lighten up, I'd call this road trip a success.

Anyone else cringe when you can hear D West yell out "and one" when he throws up a brick through a double team?

I completely agree with our status as crybabies. We whine after almost every shot. Amen, LSUhornet. D-West yells that after almost every shot. It's probably habit for him now. I also agree about D-West being a one-dimensional player. When his shot is falling, he's a beast on offense. However, when he's off, he contributes nothing else to the game. He's lazy - has anyone ever seen him on the floor going after a loose ball or falling out of bounds chasing an errant pass? More than once I've watched him watch a ball go out of bounds that he could have easily saved, but he was already heading back up the court. Also, his D is nonexistent. It's like he thinks his only job is to shoot the ball and once he does so, he's done until the next offensive possession.
I don't want to take away from his offensive game - when he's on, he's great. But we need people who can play on both ends of the court.

I think I'm with Byron on the 2-1 roadtrip. Sure, when we were 0-0 2-1 seemed safe. But once you're 2-0, going 2-1 only means you went 0-1 in the last game. I'm not happy with it. At the end of last year, and especially after signing Posey, we thought we'd be dominating this year. We thought we'd be 12-1 now. Like the Lakers. They have something we don't and we need it. Now.

There is something not right with this team. CP said they are not there physically & mentally. That's a big problem. Tyson is still underwhelming. Dwest still can't or won't play D especially when he's off offensively. Thank goodness peja is coming around but its not enough with the lack of rebounds & consistent defense. Changes to either the system or personnel need to be made

I agree that the season has been pretty disappointing thus far, but we have shown some improvement in the past week as opposed to the previous two. Hopefully we can keep making baby steps and be a real dangerous team in time for the playoffs.

The problems are there... and they are serious ones, but that Denver win got my confidence in this team back. But then again, the 3's and jumpshots were falling. We are a really hard team to beat when are shooters are on.. but I guess that's part of the problem. We rely too much on kicking out to our shooters. I say get Julian more PT and get him cutting and slashing. Devin goes hard to the rim too... and I love him for it, but against superior opposition he just doesn't seem to be too succesful at it. I want him to keep doing it though... especially since he seems to be hitting his free throws lately.
I do agree with the D-West critique... when he's playing well offensively, he's amazing, and the rebounds and such seem to come with that... but when his shot isn't falling he is basically invisible. That tip-in in the Denver game? We need to see more of that from West. And we know he can rebound so why isn't he? Same with Chandler. 3,4,5,6 boards from your starting PF and/or starting C just isn't acceptable. I hope Byron pounds that into their heads.
All in all though... I expected something like 10-5 after 15 games, so 9-6 isn't too bad. I hope we can fix what's ailing us though.

Things could be worse - we could have Stephon Marbury on our team, whats with that guy anyway?
I know there is something wrong with Tyson I didn't see him get into with
Przybilla last night.

mo pete's friend Plaxico Burruss from university just shot himself in a club with his own, unlicensed gun in Manhattan. Looks like he'll be going to jail for a minimum of 3.5 years since New York has the strictest gun policy rules for a few years now.
and just months after winning the superbowl and a 35 million dollar contract for 5 years. plus he got his teammate Antonio Pierce in trouble, since Pierce hid the gun at his NJ home. look like the NFL is over for Plax since he's already 31.
what a waste. what an interesting friend for Peterson to keep.

i am not saying mo is like that at all. its just i used to live in NY - and Plax isn't someone you should hang out with. he's trouble from a mile a away - at work he's always getting fined. cops seem to always be at his place. trouble with the wife in a violent manner if i recall correctly.
its okay to be friends with pp like thatl when your kids, have no money and don't know any better - but once you become a real adult, friends like that are shown the door. especially when you get money.
its sad to say, but you have to do that, or you'll get caught up with a record trying to help a friend and being at the wrong place at the wrong time. maybe even death. its a sad reality in the black community.
mo seems like a cool cat though. plus plax totally ruined my fantasy league with his pathetic play. should have known better, but i guess a superbowl ring with fool ya.
i doubt their best friends though. its been a while since college.

Sarah, I think you have it backwards. When you reach a certain level of celebrity as a professional athlete, your available circle of friends is relatively small. You don't exactly meet people casually any more. Youre not going to get an invite to watch the Saints game Sunday after running into him at the supermarket. While Plax may not be a fine example of a pro athlete in terms of his personal life, he is in a similar circumstance professionally-wise. Think of a semi-famous actor who casually knows Amy Winehouse. They have more in common than they do with schleps like you and me. To that end, the relationship may not be close or deep enough to make those kind of comparisons or links.

It was a Glock. The only safety on it is on the trigger itself. It poses no risk of going off if dropped, but it can be fired if loaded and improperly carried.
