Electric times at the Arena tonight. I hadn't felt that buzz since the playoffs last May. The crowd was into it from the opening tip, went nuts when Chris Paul claimed a piece of history, and somehow found an even higher pitch when the Hornets made that kick-ass run down the stretch.
Let's dive right into bullet mode:
- Our guys came up with some mighty big plays in this one. Perhaps none was bigger than the 6-0 Chris Paul winning a jump ball against the 6-6 Manu Ginobili with 24 seconds left and the Hornets clinging to a 4-point lead. There are so many things that Chris Paul shouldn't be able to do, but he just goes ahead and does them anyway. He'll probably cure cancer when he's done with the basketball thing.
- A couple more big plays came courtesy of David West late in the fourth. With Peja Stojakovic sitting this one out due to back spasms, West decided to pick up some of the slack by nailing a couple from deep. Those two buckets started a 13-0 Hornets run, turning a 7-point deficit into a 6-point lead with just over a minute left to play.
- You want more big plays? How about all those defensive stops down the stretch? If you discount Manu's meaningless layup right at the end, we allowed just 11 points (3 FGs, 5 FTs) in the final frame. The Hornets D was actually pretty solid throughout. Granted, the Spurs, and especially Matt Bonner, missed a bunch of open threes (9-26 3FGs), but we didn't give them much inside. We mixed it up a lot on Duncan, sometimes doubling, sometimes playing him straight up with Tyson. Nice job too of keeping Parker and Ginobili out of the lane. Those two finished with a combined 37 points on 15-25 shooting, but a lot of their damage had to be done on jumpers, and Manu didn't get to the free throw at all.
- Let's talk about the historic moment: 3:43 left in the second quarter, and Tony Parker tries to whip a pass out high from the corner. Only there's Chris Paul and his seventeen arms getting in the way and coming up with the steal. Mark it down as 106 consecutive games with a theft, the Spurs losing a possession and Alvin Robertson's record in one fell swipe. As mentioned, the Arena left out a roar of approval for that one, and CP took a moment to salute the crowd on the next dead ball.
- 4 and change left in the third quarter when Chris Paul gets doubled and turns the ball over. Roger Mason breaks the other way, with Rasual Butler in hot pursuit. Rasual blocks the layup, a trailing Parker gets the rebound, but doesn't see Rasual sneaking behind him as he goes to reset. Butler swipes it away, saves the ball back to a teammate from the sideline, then busts ass down the floor, getting the rock right back so he can hit the short jumper. The whole sequence lasted about seven seconds, and it was probably the best seven seconds of basketball Rasual Butler has ever played or ever will play.
- Sean Marks vs. Matt Bonner. I threw up a little.
- Byron started Devin Brown in the backcourt tonight, and also gave Antonio Daniels several minutes alongside Paul. We didn't fare too well with those small lineups though. The Spurs played off Devin and he could never make them pay, and we didn't really push the ball enough to make the most of Paul and Daniels on the floor together.
- Posey's been huge for us the past three games. He delivered 20 and 10 in Toronto, dropped 9 points in the final 8 minutes last night in Memphis, and did a little bit of everything toinght against the Spurs. I'm pretty sure he wasn't solely responsible for keeping Manu in check, but he definitely played a big role in that. He also knocked down a big triple in that 13-0 run, and it seemed as if he was getting every rebound in the fourth quarter.
- West and Chandler worked well together inside tonight, especially when Tyson was hedging out on those picks, leaving Timmy roaming towards the basket. West repeatedly made sure Duncan didn't roam right to the rim for an easy two. In total, our two big bigs combined for 31 points, 20 rebounds, 5 blocks and only 4 fouls. Neither guy shot particularly well and they turned the ball over seven times, but I'm calling it a great night at the office for both of them.
- The Spurs must have the most diverse hair in the league, what with Manu's bald spot, Bonner's gingerness, Mason's mini fro type thing, Oberto's majestic mane and Duncan's hairline of doom. And let's not forget Pop's evil Santa beard, sitting there on the bench, quietly judging you.
- Great job by the Arena crew tonight. They put on quite a show for the national TV audience. They had the movie clips and sound bytes rolling at the right times to get the crowd revved up, and I'm sure all the towel waving must have looked good on ESPN. Nice work.
So the win tonight puts the Hornets a game ahead of the Spurs and a half game ahead of the Rockets in the division. That puts us third in the West, behind the Nuggets and a small speck on the horizon that I'm told is the Lakers.
Next up, we've got the Kings on Saturday. We've found some redemption against the Bobcats and Spurs already this season; hopefully we can smack Sacto with some similar payback this weekend.

very nice win, looking forward to watching this game on NBA LP.
Peja out and no MoPete, Julian? These 2 are valid options for Peja, or am I missing something here?

West's 3's were HUGE. He looked pretty comfortable stroking them, too. If he could hit those at a respectable clip, he'll be very hard to guard.
@ oilcan: Julian probably would have been out there if the opponent wasn't so tough. I think Byron really wanted this one, and he didn't want to risk putting JuJu out there.

I wouldn't exactly call David West a 3-point threat just yet, but its clear he's worked on that shot. He stated at the end of last season that one of the things he wants to improve on in his game is his range. Well done, sir.
OMG can the Sean Marks experiment end already? 9 minutes, two fouls, 0-3 FG, Dyno-MITE!

Rashall Butler? Did we get a new player?
Seriously, you work for NBA.com doing game recaps, you would think you could know how to say the player's names. I mean it's only your job.
Hopefully we'll be at full strength for the next Laker matchup. We need some payback on them next.

The NBA.com guy probably couldn't believe that it was the same Rasual Butler from last season, so he made up a new name.
@ Mikey: Agreed about Marks. His biggest contribution is supposed to be hitting jumpers. Well, so far this season he's 4-21 on jumpers, and aside from a couple of decent rebounding games he' given us very little else. I don't see how Byron can justify keeping him on the floor. I'd love to see Bowen out there. At least he's really good at something.

He is right, Cp has what is mostly called streetsmart but he does that on the court. But seeing that play you need to also notice that on the way up that Chris faked the false start Ginobili caught CP3's arm on the way up so I guess we can call it equal for both guys.
For me this was by far the best game of the season, 2 threepointers from David West, a huge shot from our X-Factor James Posey and the D play from Rasual Butler all played well to win this game.
On the other hand I need to say that the Spurs are a great team, Duncan is one of the best players in history and Tony Parker is one of the dudes that you just have to like because of the way he is playing on the court.
Great win and we saw that little things really matter in games like that.

I have no such itch. It's in the past now. Some more thoughts from last night:
*Glad to see a truely Tyson-Like performance last night from the big fella, complete with some double-double action. He gets up for these games against Duncan. 7 offensive rebounds against the likes of TD21 is SICK!
*Nice job all-around with hitting the boards. I didn't realize we out-rebounded them by that much tonight. No Hornets starter had less than 5 boards. Devin was credited with 6, and I know he boxed his guy out at least two other times so a fellow Bee could pull one down. Did I mention that Sean Marks didn't record a single rebound? ugh!
*Manu would be a legit 6'7 with a nice comb-over.
*I didn't think we got to the line enough last night, but in the end it was only a one-point advantage to San Antonio.
*How about Hilton Armstrong hitting those freebies, huh? Of course he got his nightly turnover, but only commited two fouls!! That's gotta be a record. He also had 8pts, 1 steal, 1 block, and 3 boards. That's a quadruple-single folks! He can beat you in so many ways, AND he's got a steal in one game in a row. I know CP is quaking in his Jordans.
Now, let's get some revenge on these Kings on Saturday. I heard Sean Kelly on the radio last night saying that the Kings game in November was our "wake-up call" game. Let's hope so. And get well soon Peja!

big win with nothing about defense. reminds me about the last game at the arena vs. the jazz which was hard to watch. i'm glad we pulled this one out. i hope byron wakes up and take marks out the rotation. ely or bowen should be playing and would be an upgrade. i'll be glad when julian can work his way back for good. marks is terrible.

I love how Chris plays with tricks and streetball smarts. because of his size he's usually the smallest guy out there. to get that advantage he does what he needs to do.
I saw when he didnt put his foot back and i knew they'd call it spurs ball but If they don't catch it, not his fault. i don't know if this jumpball incident was as intentional on his part as they make it out to be. Looks to me he just wanted it more. Who has time to think about which foot to put forward and jump off of. I think he just didn't put his foot back and that's the refs fault for not catching it.
good recap. Still buzzin from the come from behind victory.

Roc217, trust me he knew that he didn't put his foot back. It's not even an idolization of a player it's just taking notice that he is smart out there to a point where he will even use tricks in order to get his team the W.

My favorite moment of the night was Chris Paul taking a moment to acknowledge the record with the fans. He usually doesn't do that when it comes to individual achievements.
It's a team sport, but it's still ok to give yourself a pat on the back here and there, especially when breaking long standing records.

i meant nothing but defense in my earlier comment. i've been thinking and have been hard on sean marks. he is not checking himself into games while being asked to do something that he may not be able to do. every player hs his limitations. its up to byron to find a second unit that compliments each other. i just wonder how long it will take scott to find a rotation that works.

Butler!!! That series of plays was amazing... the guy is really hustling lately.
Our perimeter defense was lacking... we weren't closing out their shooters just like we didn't in the playoffs last year, but we did defend in the paint very well and when you do that I guess you have to just hope their outside shots don't fall. Luckily for us, they didn't.
It was a really exciting game... and you could tell the Hornets were determined to get the W. Props to West and Posey for the clutch bombs.

Speaking of Duncan. No one's mentioned the jawing between he and CP. thought that was pretty interesting. CP was super hyped about this game. I didn't see what the fuss was about.
I hope Peja is alright.

They are both from wake forest at the end of the day they will be friends but as that dude from ESPN said something like " the ultimate respect is showing no respect ". They just put on the basketball face and go out there to fight, prolly nothing big. When are we playing Dallas, I want to see Dirk being scared again like last year.

Nice. You must have a pretty good camera. That shot of Duncan shooting over some tight D by West and Chandler is my favorite.
So besides the game, what was your favorite thing about the trip to NOLA?

Niall, yeah I have a pretty good camera (Nikon D50, with standard Nikor lens), and a pretty good lens (55-200) to take the pics. It cost a lot, but I use it quite a bit and honestly love it.
I have been here a bit because my family lived here until Katrina, but it is my first time since then without any family directing. I loved the food I was able to eat, I went to Harrah's twice (casinos are not readily availible in FL) and really the game and the hospitality were important to me. Thanks for asking. And thanks, I liked a lot of the pics

I was late watching this game (again) so I didn't get on a computer or look at a single newspaper in Austin yesterday because I was scared it would be spoiled. Now I'm going to go to the bank and brag to the Spurs idiot.
