The house is full of presents and family, my kids are on almost continuous sugar highs, and the Hornets play Orlando as the opening act of the NBA's giant Christmas Basketball Extravaganza. Hopefully the kids won't take too long unwrapping their presents so I can wander off to watch the game.
Since this is the Holidays, and we're all busy, I'll keep this game preview short and sweet and combine it with the Gameday thread:
The Orlando Magic are an impressive 22-6 and continue to be the forgotten team out east. Some will point to an easy early schedule, but regardless of schedule, being on a five game winning streak with that overall record is something to respect.
Night in and Night out, Dwight Howard will give Orlando a double double and some pretty tough interior defense. His range doesn't extend far outside Tyson Chandler's, but his strength and agility allows him to get right to the basket more often, resulting in about 20 points a game. He's a monster. Jameer Nelson, the magic point guard, is on a hot streak, averaging 24 points per game on 60% shooting from the field over the last five. He can be stopped, but Paul will need to be tracking him tightly and not roving for steals or he'll put a hurting on the Hornets.
To round out the Magic offensive weapons are their pair of athletic forwards. Turkoglu is the more skilled of the pair, being a good shooter, skilled driver, and able passer. Lewis is probably more athletic, but has less ball handling skills and is more of a spot up shooter.
Behind them are mostly defensive specialists who can shoot some like Mickael Pietrus and Keith Bogans.
To take this game, Chandler will have to make Howard work for position, Butler is going to need to stick like glue to Turkoglu, and Paul is going to have to focus on Nelson - something he usually doesn't have to do since most of the league's point guards aren't offensive juggernauts. His ability to slow Nelson will be key to the game.
The Magic think this game is a big one - they are handing out Dwight Howard Superman shirts to every player. Here's a Photo of the arena posted over at Third Quarter Collapse.
Enjoy your X-mas basketball, Happy Holidays to you all, and thanks to all of you for coming around and helping make this blog what it is.

Whooo!! The first Christmas Day game in franchise history. All I really want this morning is another Chris Paul dunk on Dwight Howard to cap off a W.
BTW, the T-P is reporting that Peja and Daniels are questionable for the game.

Magic have been packing the lane from the beginning. The few times New Orleans has attacked they've been successful. But as the Hornets have no perimeter threat (Peja) to draw out the defense and everyone else shooting from long range has been atrocious they can continue to stay down low and just let the Hornets shoot themselves out of the game.
Also the transition defense is unbelievably pathetic. Out the gates it looked like the Hornets partied too much on Christmas Eve while the Magic are just pushing it on every possession and were ready to play from the first possession.

THe hornets are just not mentally tough and that translates into their game. This is such a bad look. Peja can't be that much of a difference on this team. And if he is, they need to get somebody in there more reliable. If his back is going to be a constant problem, he can't be depended on period.
The teams heart is ripped out and they don't looke like they want to continue the game.

how long does cp3 play the rest of the game. the sad part is that without daniels devin still has to play and we are still going to have to settle for perimeter shots. unless tyson can stay on the court and play defense and get every rebound, he will be useless this game. we might as well play small and try to run.
#47

12/25/08 12:21 PM
Well, you can add 14 in the 1st and 17 in the 2nd to the list. That's the 3rd game in a row with a 17pt 2nd quarter. Ok... as my journal pointed out, against elite teams, we can't score. This is just another example. I'm genuinely concerned that the Hornets will not make the playoffs at this point. There are 9 good teams in the West and only 8 of them will make it.
Hey Byron, play Chris till he gets a steal, then sit all the starters. Not a single one of them deserves to play another minute in this game. They deserve to watch the likes of Marks/Brown/Bowen/Ely/Peterson get pummeled. I might make them watch it from the locker room, or listed to the radio broadcast from the damn bus. They do not deserve to be on an NBA court. I really don't want to throw out the "Q" word.

and as has been said before, we need to change the system and change some players. the fact that essentially we no longer even have a shooting guard since mo pete is riding the bench is really shooting us in the foot. cp3 is great, maybe even the best player in the league, but even the greatest cant do it without the help of the coach and some kind of supporting cast

Playing small is just giving the Magic rebounds and they still dont really run when they do play small. They think they are a half court team but they dont have the players or plays to be a half court team.
THe magic are a 3 pt shooting team and are good at it. if you cant defend them then you try to match their 3s and hornets cant do either=30 pt deficit

there's many more problems than just tyson chandler. our offense doesnt help tyson much either. if you noticed, whenever dwight gets the ball on the block, there's a dive guy who then cuts out of the lane off of a screen and goes to the opposite corner, the closest man moves up to the 45 angle, and the 45 moves to the 90 so he has a whole corner to work with to himself and the other team can't double down with the dive man because if they do he'll be at the 3 point line knocking one down. we don't have a dive guy in our offense period so it lets them double down and be able to easily rotate on a kickout. the biggest problem for us is our lack of an actual offensive system. we could even keep the same pick and roll offense and just add a couple off ball screens or screen the screener and actually have a legitemate working offense. but right now it's 2 guys standing in the corner, one at the elbow, and chris paul and a big man running the pick and roll. other teams have figured us out
#78
Roc217
12/25/08 02:04 PM
the pick and roll is notorious for being the hardest play to defend. yet, hornets are easy to figure out? How is that.
If Byron is that stubborn with this "system" he will be out of a job. it makes no sense to not adjust what they are doing. You can't keep force feeding West against athletic players. He cant shoot over them and doesnt have the skill or foot work or ball handling to get around them consistently. Tyson sets a pick and doesnt get open for a lob, bounce pass or anything.
So many times in this game cp was barking at guys to do this or that and nothing happened.
The personnel needs to change. If not by February then before next season. They are just not that good right now.

I think people are overreacting a bit. A horrible game but... it happens. We are still a good team. We are not an elite team however. Boston is, Cleveland now is, the Lakers are, and Orlando seems to be one as well. We haven't reached that level yet... But there's no reason to hit the panic button.

But how can one not be upset with what went on today. This was embarassing and very disappointing. Peja should be replaced with Mo not Brown and Scott is refusing to realize he cant hit 3s but continues to take them.
Spurs have a foundation and 3 great stars to depend on. Hornets have 2 and 1 is sometimey.
I dont think its panic, but seeing the problems that were talked about from the beginning of the season are still an issue in game 26 is inexcusable for this team made up of the same players who are coming off a great year. Sure there are 50+ games left but what makes anybody think they can just turn it around so suddenly? I'm not thinking they can change what's going on until they make some personnel changes as well as some strategy changes. They will make the playoffs but won't do what they did last year.
#84
two_tone
12/25/08 03:45 PM
its not panic mode. we were missing 2 rotational players. pejas floor spacing has caused teams to focus more on cp3. look, with peja is 100% better than devin starting but it doesn't change the fact byron's system need some changes. before peja got hurt after coming from a nice 6 or 7 game stretch teams were reserving one player to lock him down. we don't have enough of sample to say its a trend but it was working agianst good defensive teams. peja also has to guard some of the top small forwards in the nba while he has lost a lot of footspeed over the years and can't guard the carmelo's, peirce's and other players that can create their own shot.
our system is a lot of standing around and perimeter shooting. our rotations compared to last season seems are slower offensively and defensively while lacking athleticism. pargo and juju were part of the rotation before i get blasted for the sentence before. dwest benefited with the spacing from tyson putting up at least 10 and 10 last year. we're not getting that from tyson. dwest has even less space which his game is dependent on. when dwest has to be a number 2 scorer with the spacing he had as of late, it won't be pretty. we're not running cutters when the shots don't fall and either shoot well to a win or shoot into a loss. too one dimensional and we need to get more balance. if dwest will be one of our top 3 scorers we need more from our center offensively and a better backup to give him more rest.

Too much "Spectator Syndrome" going around on our team and I can't even determine whether it's by habit or by design
Yeah we were missing Peja but to lose by 20 pts is just embarassing. On another note, did anyone catch Doris Burke saying that the Hornets have a reputation around the league for being "soft"?? That's news to me. Of course we more than likely have a reputation for being whiny little [expletive goes here] when calls don't go our wat, but the whole "soft" thing really is news to me
