First, I'll give the Orlando Magic defense some credit. They closed hard, rotated well, and stayed in front of their men. They doubled who they needed to double, and left open who they needed to leave open.
That said, none of our players were on today. A couple could be classified as "ok" but none of them were good. Julian Wright played, but despite how refreshing it was to see him - and Morris Peterson - on the floor, neither actually played that well. Of course, compared to what the rest of the players were doing, it seemed like they were awesome.
Tyson was unable to stay on the floor, our starters went 0-7 from deep, allowing the Magic to lay off our perimeter guys just enough, and in general our team didn't look sharp.
The inability of some of our perimeter players to consistently hit shots is also preying on the minds of Paul and West and the players on the three-point line. The ball used to frequently hit the perimeter and then pass along the edge, now players are receiving the ball, hesitating because maybe they should shoot it instead of passing it, and then when the ball moves the one second worth of open space has been closed.
Despite the wailing about our offense, it is the same offense as last year. David West is not playing worse than he did last year. He sees a few more double-teams, but the ball typically leaves his hands fine, it's just that recently the perimeter players aren't swinging the ball and hitting their open shots, while opponents are diligently closing on them.
Many of our ills will be cured with Peja coming back true to form and Antonio Daniels adding another player who can take a swing pass and drive with it, forcing a secondary collapse of the defense like Pargo used to.
All of that said - if we want to get back to where we were last year, it starts on the defensive end. Last year we weren't the best team for contesting shots, but we were special at controlling the boards and not fouling. We're foul machines this year - and our board control has failed regularly. If we can fix the defense, we'll get more fast break run outs, more outlet passes, and some easier shots.
Anyways, I'm off to be grumpy about the game.

If Peja doesn't start next game, and Devin Brown does. I'll cry. A) Start Wright. B) Start Posey. C) Start Mo Pete. D) Start Bowen. E) Start one the the Honeybees. But for the love of this Season do not start Devin Brown. He's 11th man good. Not starter good. We can't expect him to carry this team to the championship. And if we don't, then he has no reason getting serious playing time.
I agree, Ryan, that it is not time to panic. If we only lose to Orlando, Boston, and L.A., but can beat Cleveland, San Antonio, and Denver, I still like what that gives us. We just need to keep beating (on) lesser teams, and not fumble those games like we did early this season.
Oh, and thanks, NBA, for the Lakers, Magic, and Rockets in 4 days after giving us two months with two games each week. Way to equitably ration the games.

We are foul machines this year but I believe whenever we don't foul, we're a competent enough defensive team. As far as the offensive troubles go, I know that this is the same offense from last year and I grumbled about it then too. Luckily I have this site to come to this season where others feel the same. To be totally honest, I don't think anyone except Chris is playing really hard right now.
@mW: totally agree about not fumbling away the "gimme" games. I'm not in panic mode yet because there's still time to improve and/or make changes but now's just a frustrating time for all of us. Hopefully watching the "L Train THROW the hammer down" (as the Cavs analyst always puts it) on the Wizards will brighten my day a little

I hate games like this, it makes me bitter and snappish. I had to really work to be merry, though my kids help a lot.

Short recap, but now much to talk about really. It's Christmas. Ryan, hope you had fun with your kids and that this game didn't bring you down too much.
Merry Christmas to everyone!

Ryan,
I apologize for not doing the guest recap of this game. I felt for you, but on the other hand, its not like you had to put a whole lot of analysis to it. It'll pretty much take to weeks to get the smell out of Amway Arena that we left in there today. Also, you would've had to censor 3/4 of my recap had I done one for this one. I think we would've lost to Tulane today.
A word about this season's losses... 9 to date, 1 at the Celtics, 1 at the Rockets, 1 at the Blazers, 1 at the Magic, 2 at home vs the Lakers, 1 vs the Hawks (they are pretty good by the way), and two vs bad teams. What does that mean? Well, basically you can make vacation plans in late May and June because we won't be playing then. Those are the kind of teams you face then. I actually like this stretch of games coming up. Its gonna show what kinda character these fellas really have. If today is any example, we're in for a long winter. Oh, and I got a cool jacket for Christmas, yay.

We've often looked like a very fragile team this season. When we're missing a player or two, or the opposition takes away some of the things we like to do, the wheels come off the wagon and we lose big. We rarely win ugly, which is what the best teams can do consistently. As Mikey said, these next few weeks should reveal what kind of team the Hornets really are, and I doubt they'll prove to be the team we thought they were at the start of the season.
Anyways, sorry you got stuck with this game, Ryan. You always seem to end up recapping more of the sucky games than I do. Methinks I should start betting against the Hornets whenever you're on recap duty; might make me some money.

Umm did anyone see what Mike James did last night? I wonder if scoring like that might be able to help this team......

26 points and a loss.
As for what this team is made up of? Let me all make an analogy. Any football fans out there? Okay. Last year's New York Giants. They had plenty of suck games throughout the regular season. Even 3/4 of the way through the season, who knew if they'd make the post-season. But even if they did, no way they were good enough to beat all the other contenders, right? But they did. The perfect storm of talent and coaching and luck all rolled together made them champions.
We have talent on this team. We have good coaching. We just need to put it all together and click. Are we there right now? No way. But have we shown flashes (read: vs. San Antonio, Denver, Cleveland)? Definitely. This is no sprint. We just need to keep running. As long as we finish in the top 8 in the West, anything can happen.

@Jon- 26 points in starter's minutes. Mike James is not effective in a backup role
