Wow. That was a crazy game. I watch all of my games on Time-Delay TIVO so I can skip the commercials and fast-forward through the free-throws, and typically my friend arrives about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes after tip off and we finish only a few minutes after the game ends.
Tonight my friend calls me halfway through the game and says he's not coming over for it. Of course, he always does that when the Hornets are suffering through a blowout, so I had the pleasure of going into the game knowing I was going to watch a meltdown and cursing myself for telling Niall I would do the recap. You can imagine my good humor when the Hornets started falling apart in the second behind bad turnovers and worse defense.
However, at 4:11 in the game, with the score tied 94-94 after watching the Hornets obliterate a 26-point lead over sixteen minutes of basketball, I called my friend's house to tell him I didn't care what happened in the next four minutes, I was happy, and that he was a pile of crap for wimping out on the game and putting me through that. He was too scared to pick up.
Observations, Bullets style:
- We started off the game with Butler taking Chauncey and Peja taking Anthony. I know a lot of people are going to kill Stojakovic for his defense, but honestly, he did what he was supposed to. He kept him mostly from driving, let him get the ball around 17-18 feet, and contested the shot when it went up. You can say it was stupid, but Anthony is shooting 48-131(36%) from that distance this season. And the from right side of the floor, where he was shooting, he's even worse, firing away at 29%. Give 'em what they aren't good at, and give 'em credit when they do it anyways.
- Okay, take a deep breath before I say this. Hilton Armstrong was excellent. Seventeen points on eight shots, five of five from the charity stripe. Three offensive rebounds. I'm not going to take anything away from him tonight, his first quarter was simply great, and he made Linas Kleiza look like a chump. For some reason, whenever Hilton starts, he plays pretty well. It's hard to figure out, considering how bad he can be off the bench.
- Paul, as usual, turned it on in the second half, scoring 30 on 18 shots, and dishing eleven assists. Unfortunately his line was marred by seven turnovers, and some of those were really really costly. Of course, none were as costly as that horrible turnover at the end of the game after a great defensive stop. That one still makes me cringe.
- Kenyon Martin's tatoo of lips on his neck is incredibly stupid.
- JR Smith finally got his redemption against the Hornets. Every time the Nuggets play the Hornets, JR comes out playing hard and on all cylinders. Never has he played well and won(and frequently he's played badly). Tonight, with Denver melting down in the fourth, he had some huge shots to keep them in it.
- Morris Peterson was ineffective and played only seven minutes as Antonio Daniels took some minutes at the shooting guard. Daniels line of five points and five assists may not seem like much, but if you stretch that out to starters minutes you're looking at 14 and 14 - which is a nice, efficient game. He and Paul are starting to play off of one another very well, and I think it has the potential to be a more effective duo than Paul and Pargo were last year.
- The second quarter was ugly. The Hornets turned the ball over repeatedly and missed no less than five wide open shots from three - four of those misses came from the normally consistent James Posey - and he added a pair of point blank misses for good measure. Posey, of course, came back to play tough defense on Carmelo and take him out of the game, and then rattled in two big threes, but he ended 2-8 and 2-12 overall and it did hurt.
- Phoenix Butler had a rough game. He played solid defense, but couldn't get free on the perimeter or have much of an impact on the defensive end.
- West and Peja were stroking it from the perimeter. Martin and Nene made it hard for Fluffy to produce inside, so he stepped out and hit some huge shots down the stretch to get us back in. Peja was deadly from deep when it mattered, and finished with four threes and nineteen points on fourteen shots. He also had a block. Huh?
- Sean Marks played and immediately gave up some easy rebounds and generally looked lost defensively. However, and I know this will be a shock, he did not miss any long jumpers. Probably because he didn't get a chance to shoot any.

Valiant effort I'll give the guys that. Still don't like the fact that we get in 20 point holes to begin with
Maybe I'm just really slow, but what I've realized is that we don't take getting hit in the mouth very well. The game tonight, both games against the Lakers, and the game against the Magic: we have multiple defensive breakdowns, the jumpers and 3 balls don't fall resulting in the other team going on a 22-5 run for example...and then we play them evenly the rest of the way (except the Magic game). It's frustrating.

Frustrating is the magic word in these types of games

I figured this would be a tough win for us. It is hard to beat a team twice on their home floor and if memory serves correctly , we beat them handily the first time(they never lead I think). Sam Mitchell sat in on NBATV tonight and he had it right when he said "Tyson Chandler was missed for that game"....especially on that Melo scoop lay-up at the end of the game. The call on Hilton at the end was a total BS acting job by Billups and basically gave them the game IMO. Hilton performed admirably , but I think the front office should pursue a trade for K. Fesenko from Utah...a 22 yr old 7'1" 300 Lb. Russian who has a nice touch and can play Yao straight up and send his stuff back.....somebody call the front office and tell them to make it happen , after all I was right about Antonio Daniels :)
Hilton can play the 4 and we would be rid of unproductive assets....weren't the Jazz interested in Mo Pete awhile back????

i thought it was a great job by the hornets 2 get back into it bcause in the 2nd they lookd flat and the offence sucked, i always thought we make a run. Just like every other hornet fan i close my eyes when hilton gets da ball, but i gotta say 2 games in a row now he has impressed me. Just a thougth i dont think we r gonna make an impact in the finals without a pumped up Chandler, y not start hilton 4 a while 2 make tyson work for his spot bacK??????????
Come on plz byron plz, lets start playn mo-pete or trade him.
or even ju ju i think he is 1 player we just dont wanna just lose bcause he is in 'BYRON'S DOGG HOUSE', anybody remember BRANDON BASS OR JR SMITH cant complain 2 much about da jr smith trade bcause it gave us tyson chandler

I watched this one at Henry's bar on Magazine (great spot if you're ever Uptown). They only had it on one TV there and a regular was pissed that they didn't put the football on instead when the Hornets were down billions in the third quarter. "This game is over" he said. I respectively disagreed, and he came back to me in the fourth to apologize.
So I guess my point is, I was proud of our guys tonight. A loss is a loss, but I'm glad we showed some heart and didn't get blown out. A win and a 5-point loss in the first two games of this trip is nothing to sneeze at.

Can we just have an agreement with the opposing team where they "win" the second quarter 30-23, without actually having to play? We can instead have NBA nappy time, then half time, and just come out and play the 2nd half. I'm all for it.
I think Morris Peterson was camped out in the same exact spot on every possession. He absolutely refused to move at all from that spot on the left wing behind the 3-point line. Funny thing is, thats not even his shot. He's much more comfortable shooting that shot from the corner. At least go there and not move at all.
By far our worst game of the season in regards to taking care of the ball. Chris Paul was a turnover machine. Believe me, he knows this too, and will correct it immediately. Only two Hornets logged minutes without a turnover. And they played a total of 10 minutes.
Okay, if Sean Marks is going to log time without shooting (which is perfectly ok with me).... why not let Ryan Bowen have those shotless minutes. There is absolutely nothing that Marks does better than Bowen other than being taller. You know what you're going to get out of Bowen. He'll box out, grab a couple of boards, get blown-by on defense a couple times, probably have a steal, flail his arms wildly, and generally inject the team with energy while on the floor. Unfortunately, you know what you're going to get with Marks too. You'll get a lack of boxing out, soft defense, fouling, a brick or two from 18-feet away, and if he spends more than four seconds per game in the paint he might break out in hives.

Yeah, Chris Paul tied his career high in turnovers, Mikey. That in itself is pretty crazy, that he's never had more than 7 turnovers despite the amount of time he has the ball in his hands.

disappointing is all I can say about Posey's choice of shot with 19 sec left on the shot clock

Posey had to have thought Peja's shot was an airball so he hoisted it up thinking the shot clock was running down. That's the only reason I can think of for him to shoot that. But what was the play to begin with and why was it impounded to Peja. If you want a 3 why not give it to Paul to penetrate for a wide open 3. The hole ending was just clumsy.

Roc217 I agree with you 100% about our clumsy play at the end. What a great effort to come all the way back though. When we were down by 26, I said to my brother that this game will test the toughness of our team because we don't really seem to respond well recently when falling behind big. Sure enough, we came all the way back baby!! Too bad we made some bonehead plays at the end.
CP didn't have a good game, as you all have noted with the 7 turnovers. I look for him to come out next game and take it to the Lakers. God knows we owe them one...

If we took out the second quarter scores of every game we've played so far, we'd probably be only like 28-2; First in the NBA.
But our second quarter woes keep continuing. Let's find out who averages the most points in the second quarter and the league and trade for him! Guaranteed success! Siiiike!
