I'll keep this preview short. The Hornets have already played the Lakers twice this season, and both times, the Lakers put the hurt on them in the first two quarters, running out to a twenty-point lead, and then let up, letting the Hornets come back and make it look respectable in the last two quarters. Neither of those losses were respectable at all.
It's a long season, and typically I think "statement games" are pretty overblown. The Mavericks had a "statement game" on the last day of the regular season to beat the Hornets, and then got steamrolled in the playoffs. The Suns regularly had "statement games" against the Spurs during the regular season the past few years, and we know how that turned out for them in the playoffs. The Hornets even had two "statement games" to start their series against the Spurs. I'll stop there, no one wants to remember what happened next.
Tomorrow night, however, will tell us something about the Hornets. If they get hammered again, falling behind big, that forms a pattern of four games in a row(going back to last season) being blowouts in favor of the Lakers. If that happens, I'm willing to say that the Hornets won't get past the Conference Finals this off-season. No, not that they probably won't. They won't.
However, if the Hornets come out and play the Lakers tough, even if they lose by single digits, then I'll like our chances in the postseason more. Not a lot more, just more.
So, I am saying it is a statement game for the Hornets. It'll make the statement about whether they can match up with the Lakers, who are almost certainly the primary Conference Final contender this season.
I can't tell you how much I hope the Hornets prove themselves. I want to believe.
As for a positional analysis and matchup, the Lakers haven't changed from my last preview. At this point, however, I'd call the Bynum-Chandler matchup in favor of the Lakers until and if Chandler returns to last year's form.
Enjoy the game.

Agreed on everything. You do realize the game is tomorrow night, though, right?

Yeah, I realized that about five minutes ago. That's why all the references to tonight have been changed! :)

I was suddenly and horribly confused by that.
But then, I played Fallout 3 for 12 hours yesterday, so I'm confused by lots of things that are happening...

Fallout 3 is fun. I don't think I put as many hours into it as Oblivion, but it was still a good game.

@ Ryan: It would be quite a feat to put as many hours into it as I have in Oblivion. I'd have at least 190 to go...
@Niall: That, or I've stopped going outside.

Yeah, I have around 160 in Oblivion or so. Still need to go back and do the Shivering Isles.

Luke Walton will miss tomorrow's game, and a few more:

Luke out means Ariza starts. I'd rather have Luke

Well, the Spurs just wrapped up another win in Miami, so they strengthen their lead in the standings a bit more over the Hornets.

@ Ryan & Ticktock: Wow, is Oblivion really that good? What do you guys play on, Xbox 360 Live?
And I too would rather have Walton in than Ariza as a starter. Do you guys remember how many times CP3 ripped Walton last game in the first quarter? At least 4.

Xbox 360, yeah. There is a ton to do in Oblivion and the world is huge. If you like that sort of game, it's a great sandbox.
Ariza actually doesn't fit the triangle offense as well as Luke does, but I agree, he does present a whole different set of problems - like making Peja Stojakovic work for open shots a lot harder.
Still - I wouldn't be certain that Vlad Rad doesn't start. Like Byron, Jackson doesn't usually like to break up his established rotations.

Ariza seems to be the all-trades second-unit hustler that Odom was slated to be. He's a crafty scrapper, thriving on broken plays and the looser running of the second unit. I'd be very suprised if he starts over Rad or even Odom (who might get the nod because his starting role wasn't so long ago, as in he can work the triangle with the starters.) But whenever Ariza is on the floor he'll give Peja and/or Pose conniptions. (In canse it isn't obvious I'm a fan of Trev, although obviously hope he gets savaged by the bees along with the rest of the Lake Show tomorrow)...
Also, for mine Gasol has been the Lakers' MVP this season - deadly around the basket and providing a suprisingly tough anchor on D. I'm not so sure Bynum's return has had much to do with that so much as more time to acclimatise in a drastically new environment. In light of that, I think the Gasol/West battle will be the key matchup in Ryan's statement game scenario. If Weezy can beat Gasol to the whole a few times and make the mop second guess on D, AND bang hard, take him off the block and force him out of that little running hook I think we can take the game away from them Lakers. If not, they have too many weapons in the end.

@ Stefan-- I game on my PC. Usually with mods and goodies.
Actually talking about the game, I've got no expectations for this one, unlike the two home games. Could they win? Sure. But I feel pleasantly unstressed over this. I think we're going to end up in a Suns/Spurs situation, where we find ourselves trading for/drafting a versatile big man solely for the purpose of getting past the Lakers in the playoffs, who we will probably lose to for the next five years, the way things are now. We just need more height.

I've been saying it since last year - Peja goes off in Staples Center on a regular basis. He's getting at least 4 threes tonight - hopefully more.
Hornets should have a good shot to win this one - they seem to bond on these road trips when they have a day or two off.

That pre-game article in the LA Times I read this morning talked about Chris Paul and the big men and didn't even mention Peja. I found that completely inexplicable. He was out the last time the two teams played, but he's gotten super hot on the Lakers in the best.
Let's hope.

True on Peja at Staples. He had three very good games there last season (2 vs. Lakers, 1 vs. Clippers) if I remember correctly. He shot a ridiculous percentage from 3 in that building.

Well I do not think David West has the strength to "body up" Gasol's frame on Defense and he definitely doesn't have the height to block the hook shot. Oden is 7ft and probably a better defender but was rendered useless. The most effective strategy against Gasol is picking him from the weakside when he goes into his post moves or simply pulling the chair from him.. HE'LL FALL.. And when a couple bad things happen to him early like those, his confidence falters.
With regards to the Lakers MVP, its been the usual suspect. KB is on a roll.. Since he played New Orleans last, he has been shooting some insane % lie 55% or so.. The jumper is really wet right now..
I still say this game would be more competitive than the first 2 in New Orleans but as Ryan said.. If the bees get blown out in the first half and make that comeback of an excuse in the 2nd, then LA got their number just like they got the SUNS number, that simple.
ENJOY D GAME!
