So, it's energy and effort that Byron Scott wants, huh. Well, Ryan Bowen has got your energy and effort right here!!
Sorry, I had to start with that. What a game? It was non-stop excitement from the opening tip. The Sixers are a pretty aggressive team on the defensive end. They force quite a few turnovers, and like to push the ball. The Hornets fell victim to that style in the first half, but managed to stay within striking distance. In the 2nd half though, the Hornets buckled down a little more on the turnovers, rebounded pretty effectively, actually played some interior defense, oh and there's this guy named Peja Stojakovic, whom I'll get to later. In the end, the Hornets gutted out another short-handed victory in a game where they had no business winning. The Bugs are now 3-1 in the four games without David West and Tyson Chandler. That is what I like to call "holding your ground". Before we get to the bullets, let me give props to the 16,131 in attendance tonight. It was a tense crowd at tip-off, but when the Hornets went on that 10-0 run to start the 3rd quarter, it was pandamonium. You could tell those guys fed off that energy. Nice work, fans. let's hit the bullets.
- Chris Paul is good at basketball. How good you ask? How about 3 steals short of a quadruple-double.... again! The kid is just flat out amazing. He was also the Hornets leading rebounder. I thought the Sixers played effective defense in the 1st half, keeping Chris out of the lane. In the 2nd half, he just owned them, and those two 3-point plays in the 3rd quarter were things of beauty. I think I caught a glimpse if Niall wiping away a tear.
- It looked as if Sammy Dalembert knocked CP in his gonads in the 3rd quarter. Somewhere Julius Hodge is smiling and eating a cookie.
- How nice was it to see JuJu get his first starter man-hug from Posey tonight? He only had two points, but I thought he made his presence felt fighting for those rebounds. He was a bit of a mixed bag defensively, but it was nice to see him get some burn.
- Anyone know what happened to Elton Brand tonight? Wow, not a very productive 18 minutes. What was with him shooting those fade-away jumpers. I guess he was afraid that Sean Marks would put the Kiwi Gris Gris on him..... that's right, Kiwi Gris Gris. You heard it here first.
- Speaking of the Kiwi, he had himself a serviceable game. 5 boards (3 offensive) and 4 points in 16 minutes of backup action. He was really working out there for those rebounds. It really seemed to be his focus tonight. His biggest contribution came in what he didn't do, and that's clang 18-footers. He didn't take unnecessary shots. All of his makes and misses were right at the basket, and he's 6'10", so that makes sense. Nice effort.
- Niall had glowing reviews on the Honeybees costumes at the start of the game. When asked about the Used-to-Bees costumes, he was strangely silent.
- In Ryan's pregame post I mentioned three keys to the game. One was take care of the ball; 18 TO for the Hornets VS 22 TO for the Sixers (win). Second was don't get killed on the boards. At the half the Hornets were -5 in rebounding differential, by the end of the game the Hornets were, I'll be darned, -5, even in the 2nd half (win). Lastly, win at the stripe. Before the end-of-game foul fest, the Sixers had attempted 20 FT, and made 12. The Hornets also made 12... out of 13 (win).
- Before I get to Peja dropping bombs... what else can you say about the aforementioned Ryan Bowen? I've said this before, but the guy is 48 minutes of basketball condensed into 7 minutes of actual playing time. Let me break it down for you all. First, he gets a HUGE offensive rebound at the end of the 3rd, leading to a Posey 3. In the 4th, Bowen gets the ball on the low block, two dribbles and a kickout to Peja on the wing... bucket. Next Sixers posession, Bowen plays awesome help defense causing a hasty pass and an off-balance shot. He then boxes-out his man, gets the rebound, tips it to CP, and Chris is off to the races.... Peja from the wing again, GOOD! Two posessions later, this time Bowen gets a long pass, does a shot-fake, drives the baseline and finds Peja on the wing... bucket. Add in another assist and two nice, hard fouls on Reggie Evans, and that is how you maximize your minutes. When he came out of the game, you could see he was completely spent. I loved every second of his tireless effort on the court. Note to Coach Scott, I want more of that.
- I know Chris Paul is Chris Paul... but it's been Peja that has really stepped up in David West's absence. He is seriously picking up the slack, averaging over 22 ppg in just over 39 mpg. Tonight he was stroking it in the 4th quarter. While Ryan Bowen was doing his best Chris Paul impersonation, it was Peja ripping the nets on the other end. At one point he hit five 3-pointers in a row. When he hit that 5th three.... the crowd went crazy. It was really something to witness.
- Philly led 47-40 at the half, with 36 of their points coming in the paint. In the end the Sixers finished with 56 points in the paint, but it wasn't enough. When Philly was in the half-court, they settled for way too many jump shots, and missed a lot of them. Did they watch the film from the Minnesota game? Just a thought.
But hey... The Hornets notch another precious W. You have to get as many of them as you can from November to April, especially in the West. Kudos to the role-players for playing some big-boy minutes and being productive. Also Kudos to Chris Paul for being a one-man army. It doesn't get any easier with the Nuggets coming into town on Wednesday. Here's to hoping Hilton can channel some of what he had in that last game in Denver.

I told you, I had dust in my eye.
Chris Paul's first three-point play in the third quarter was probably the best play I've seen all season. The steal, the blow-by of Andre Miller, and then the no-look, over-the-shoulder finish while being fouled. Incredible. And I think Dalembert will be sidelined for a month after breaking his knuckles off CP's steel gonads.
Gotta love the Kiwi Gris Gris. Thanks for holding down the recap, Mikey. Nice work.

I also loved that Andre Miller deliberately fouled Rasual with 1.1 on the game clock, because he heard the announcer say that we were one point away from free Popeye's. The ref looked at him like he was insane, and appeared to ask if he really wanted the foul call, so Miller responded with some wild arm waving, and I can only assume he was saying "Hell, yes I want the foul call! Get these people some chicken!"
It's nice to see that out-of-towners are still interested in helping out our city. If more people would spontaneously provide 16000 chicken dinners, we'd be in great shape. I take that back, we'd be even fatter.

I'm glad someone else but me loved the Andre Miller foul. I was snickering about that for the rest of the evening. Everyone on the floor was like, "Seriously?"

Man, what a game, or at least thats what I hear. NBA League Pass is amazing..I live in northeast PA, a good 3 hours away from Philadelphia. Yet for whatever reason, I never get to watch the Sixers because they are blacked out. Guess league wants me to drive 3 hours to watch them play in person!! But I DO NOT GET why they black out road games..causes me to miss my Hornets. Not cool david stern. Not cool.
Anyway, I really wish I could have watched that game yesterday because its the type of game where you are really proud of your team. To be 3-1 without Chandler and West is amazing. Let's keep this energy up and try to steal another one vs. Denver. It would be a message to the other teams in the West that we are playing this well without our starting frontcourt!
GO HORNETS!!

I didn't have enough room to fit him in the recap, but it would be a shame if I didn't mention Antonio Daniels. He came to play last night. That mid-range jumper is starting to fall for him, which is good. He didn't have an assist, but did have 8 points, including a nice runner in the beginning of the 2nd quarter. I felt that shot set the tone in the quarter, of which he hit a couple baskets to keep us afloat during a couple of scoring droughts. Nice game AD.
Must be tough being Chris Paul's backup. You're not going to get a whole lot of time to make an impact on a game. If you make a negative impact, you get yanked with a quickness; just ask Mike James. You definitely need to check your ego in at the door, which is hard for any professional athlete. I think AD has the right mindset to be CP's backup. He's a veteran, and knows his role. Also, he's a great cheerleader.

ry-bowen's pass on the break was the high point of my season so far, maybe topped by a mikey recap. i'm starting to think these injuries were what we needed to sort out the rotation, with bowen and hopefully ju-ju reclaiming some minutes when things return to normal. can't wait to see a dejected k-mart on fulton street tomorrow.

Love the JuJu start, love the Bowen PT, love Peja setting the building on fire, and of course, love the CP3 ridiculousness. I think this is what we were all hoping for once Mr. West and Ty went down--everybody stepping up their game, whether it be a little (Marks) or a lot (Paul, somehow elevating his game from "MVP-like" to "UN-@#&$#@%-CONTAINABLE"). The wing players in particular have made an impression on me. Posey and Rasual have been knocking down their open looks, and Peja is back to being Peja (pretty sure Bob and Gil said he was averaging 21 per game since the injuries, and that was before the 26 last night).
These last 3 of the month are gonna be tough, but if we can get 2 of them that will make us 10-6 for January. And, all things considered, that ain't too shabby. Not a reason for celebration, but certainly nothing to be disappointed about.

My favorite thing, out of so many great things in this game, was Chris Paul. It seemed like he took the court with ill intentions from the start. He had that weird play where he tripped up and turned it over, then sprinted back on defense for a steal before sprinting right back to pick up the offense that he initially wanted.
The announcers were on it all night. Saying CP3 basically declared the ball his and was taking at will.
The jump ball, right after the play he had that ball cradled like he wasn't going to let the ref's have it to jump it up. Then that crazy almost steal where he all but tackled their player and had him fighting for his life. He looked like a wild rabid animal clawing at the ball while this dude is on the ground covering up as best he could.
Keep bringing the aggression CP3, it's your ball, you only let the other team borrow it from time to time.
Here's a question though, can we keep this higher energy style once West and Chandler are back in? It seems like going deeper in our bench is setting the high energy tone, rather than the dish to West and let him post up style.

I was wondering why Miller committed that foul. That's pretty cool of Andre.

Antonio Daniels was straight up amazing last night. It's a shame that Posey was named the Sub of the game, because AD played his best game as a Hornet.

Nice move by Andre Miller. I missed that because my legendary ticket rep Blake was bringing me down to the postgame press conference. Only Byron came along to answer questions, but it was interesting seeing that whole side of things.
@ Juncti: You reminded me of CP going for a jumpball vs. Reggie Evans in the fourth quarter. Paul was pretty winded by that point, so he purposely lined up at the wrong side of the circle for the jump. Then, when the official moved him to the other side, Chris took a good 30 seconds to untie and tie his shoelace. He got maybe a minute of rest out of those tricks without having to miss a play.

@ Juncti: Forgot to reply to your question. I think we'll be fine when West and Chandler come back, so long as Byron keeps giving energy guys like JuJu and Bowen some decent minutes. Throwing them out there provides the perfect antidote to those stretches when we're getting outhustled and outrebounded and the other team is making a run.

I only saw highlights of Chris Paul being Chris Paulish=amazing. Bowen and Marks are both the types of players every team needs. They go out and do their job and if doesn't involve shooting, so be it. Andre Miller is a hero for the foul, nice job. Anyone here have a tape of the MN game?

Ryan Bowen- I just love that guy!
Great win for us. Still wish Mo Pete would get more PT though but I definitely can't complain. I'm not overly concerned with the game vs. Denver. They're slowly becoming a better version of Utah meaning that they're great at home but you never know what you might get on the road.

Kiwi Gris Gris. Gold. By the way, I got a smoothie with Kiwi flavor today. Consider it my testament to Marks.
For anyone who didn't see the game last night, Peja's 5 consecutive treys were all from the same exact spot on the floor. I turned to TT6 at the game and said, "why don't they just camp a defender on that spot?"
Lastly, anyone who seriously can breathe the word MVP without thinking CP3 should come talk to me. I have some re-appearing Louisiana wetlands to sell them.

I noticed this last night while watching, and it's in that video clip. Every time Peja gets the ball and shoots, everyone stands up in anticipation of cheering the basket.
It's almost like the whole arena collectively wills the ball into the net each time.
Watch it and you'll see it. Peja gets the ball, starts shooting motion, crowd rises, ball goes in, crowd goes nuts and Peja heads start flying.

@ Juncti: Absolutely. Everyone at the Arena expects him to make it. There's like an odd silence when he shoots, too, as everyone in the building inhales at the same time. Great being there for that.
@ Becky Hammon: Sure, I'll brag about it.

@HornetsMan:
I think I know why your League Pass is blacked out. See I live four hours from Los Angeles, and almost all of their games are always blacked out on League Pass for me. Then I noticed that every time League Pass blacks it out, it's on another channel, which is usually the Laker's Fox Sports Channel.
League Pass blacks out games it its on another channel in your area that you can access. I have directTV, and I just search for the channel in the Menu. I'm not sure what you have, but just try going through all of your channels next time it happens. Hope this helps.
