Though(as you'll see in the bullets) there were some things that made me pretty hot during the game, I don't really feel this was a bad loss. The Hornets missed Tyson badly as Parker and Ginobili made it to the hoop at will and had no trouble finishing, Posey continued to slump and the wing shooters we rely on to keep spacing open on the floor were consistently run off their spots and contributed little.
The Bullets:
- Spurs fans like to act like a mid-season game doesn't matter to the Spurs because the team is so superior to those around it. That casual arrogance may play for the fans, but don't believe it for a second for Popovich, Timmy and company. Popovich was animated, on his feet screaming at his players all game long. Every time there was a time out he stalked far out onto the court, yelled at his guys to gather around, and frequently laid into at least one of them. Ginobili and Duncan also got on teammates repeatedly, and there was some real intensity out there. They wanted this game.
- While Popovich was getting after it, Byron made a blunder that had me spitting in fury. I like Byron. I like his rotations more than 99% of the people who post here. I like the way he handles most of our players. But when Chris Paul is hitting every god damn shot he's taking, even the impossible ones, and he's causing enough havoc on the defensive end to help the Hornets chip away at the Spurs lead, you don't take him out of the game. You just . . . don't. He sat for 5 minutes, and the lead had grown by another five, leaving Paul just too big of a hole to come back from.
- West's jumpers weren't falling. Almost every one drew front iron. In the third, when he picked up his technical, he was clearly furious and had about a 10-posession stretch where he worked hard and drove that ball into the paint with good effect. Then he took an inadvertant forearm from Mason in the back going for an offensive rebound and he started settling for jumpers again. Typically I don't blame a single player, but he pretty much killed us with all the misses, despite his good work on the boards.
- Speaking of killing us, Posey was terrible. Dumb fouls, bad shots, a technical that drove me to tell him to shut the F up. I have a feeling he didn't hear me though. I could have gone for about 6 minutes less of Posey, with those minutes going to Bowen for some much needed energy and hustle. We need Posey to snap out of it and get back to Champagne-and-Bacon James.
- One of the things we miss most about Tyson most is his ability to set a wide-bodied, strong pick. West, Posey and Marks are too absorbed in their next move to get open offensively, and frequently slip the pick too early. Paul suffers more pressure on his drives into the paint because of this - and his turnovers are up as a result. I may have said this before, but I'd love a strong, bruising rebounder who likes to set picks.
- Hilton Armstrong did everything we could have asked of him defending Tim Duncan. He contested shots, and he even sacrificed his pride trying to contest that crushing dunk by Ginobili. Yes, as always I would have loved some rebounds, but he gave everything he could - and he also got tagged by a trio of terrible fouls that had no basis in reality.
- I'd comment on Peja if he had an impact on the game. I don't blame the Hornets for going away from him - when he did catch the ball he almost always gave it back up or was worked into a tough shot.
- Devin Brown did well. Thanks, Devin.
- Julian Wright had a scattered game again. Nice rebounding work, okay defense, bad decisions on offense. He made one particularly bad decision when he passed open two open shots to whip the ball to . . . Sean Marks deep in the corner. Julian, we are trying to stop him from taking that shot. At least Marks realized that too and he tried to drive it. Too bad he traveled.
Anyways, I'm off to bed. Have a good night.
Oh and everyone tell Dariusz how much his game-day banners rock. They are always slick - but this one was especially nice.

I don't see anything in coach Scott on court. He's been great off, but does our offense put ALL the responsibility on CP? I admit I'm not too keen on offensive schemes, but I'm sincerely going to make an effort watching our offense next time.
I'd also like to see us use our whole bench. Not saying Scott is one, but I hate watching coaches that use only 3 players (ahem D'Antoni). We have a gaping lack at bigs. If you don't like Bowen or Ely, why not active Tolliver? I'm sure we could've been using him while CFRM's been out, picks and all.

Hilton did a awesome job but he is just not in Duncans league, Devin Brown take a bow, i think juju is slowly gettn der. CP3 did a really good job, awesome shooting but he was on his own. I think west tryed his a#$e off but it just didnt drop he needs 2 find his grove back. Also was anybody watchin it on spurs tv, sean elloit is the most 1 sided annoucer off all time? anybody agree?

Caleb was saying the same thing in the game thread comments about Byron benching CP in the fourth quarter. The only thing that might excuse Byron is if CP asked for a breather. That doesn't sound like something CP would do, but I've been trying hard lately to give Byron the benefit of the doubt.
I thought the Spurs locked up Peja real good in the first half, but they relaxed on him in the second and we didn't try going back to him. I'm not going to blame West's return for Peja's sudden struggles, but it would be really interesting to play the Spurs again without West and see how Peja fares. Methinks there would be a significant difference in his performance. Our coaching staff needs to do a better job mixing up the offense and taking advantage of every weapon, rather than force feeding a guy who just came back from injury and doesn't have his legs under his shot yet.
@ CP3ISTHEMVP: At The Hive noted that about Elliot in their game recap: http://www.atthehive.com/2009/1/31/743549/game-44-hive-five
@ IHBH: Prepare for disappointment and frustration if you're going to watch our offense. It's amazing that we can have the best assist man in the NBA and yet have such bad ball movment. Oh, and Tolliver hasn't been signed to another 10-day so he's no longer an option in the rotation. I'm still not sure why Melvin Ely hasn't been getting any minutes recently. Bowen's lack of PT is definitely the one that bothers me most though.
And here's the link to Dariusz's game banner for those of you who haven't seen it:

Wow thanks for the positive response to the banner :) That was a lot more "buzz" than on any other of them. You will like the next one for sure ;-)
As for the game I have to say I am dissapointed, we were not playing our game and it's not good when CP has to take all the shots, what happened to Peja ? Does he have like a feeling that with West on the court he isnt the king anymore or something ?
Sual Bop is getting the time to be traded, I would pull something off when he is still playing good before he becomes another medicore player, and that can happen.
As for the whole rest of the team I wasn't happy at all, the defence was terrible when we let Finley/Ginobili just destroy us.
Cp did good but the rest of the team didn't follow, and BS should've left him in the game maybe then getting closer to like 2 points maybe the others would see a light in the tunnel.

Niall, I complained about the lack of ball movement last year, and I guess it hasn't changed. As good as CP is, we can't put all the responsibility on him. And as bad as Ely and Bowen are, they were the most viable option to secure the post; which obviously we didn't really do, according to the remarks on Ginobili cutting us up. Draft pick big man this year?
4 game homestand coming up. Portland should be difficult, but the others now are "must-wins" (I know 247 hates that phrase, haha). We've lost enough to mediocre teams as is.

Awww... why not ChrisTrew? This game isn't important to them, remember.
@ Niall: I too predicted a Peja slump after David West's return. He was playing so hard and with so much heart while West was out, it was crazy for me to think he'd be able to sustain that.
This game went about the way I expected it. I expected the Spurs to be ready (don't look now, but their last 3 wins are at PHX, at UTA, and us). I expexted us to be amped up as well. I also expected us to blow a gasket or 2 if things didn't go our way. If we lost, which we did, I just didn't want to lose by 3 points or less. I didn't want our dumb, lack-of-composure, bitchy technicals to be the difference in this one. That Posey technical at the end of the half was the worst. Not blaming David West for this (or am I), but it's amazing that he comes back, and we start bitching at the officials again instead of, I don't know, playing basketball! Lastly, I think this is the only game this season in which the Hornets lost in every quarter; a sobering thought indeed.

Spurs? I'm still stuck on the fact that we lost to the Warriors. The Warriors. They. Are. Horrible. Not sure what that says about us.

The Celtics lost to the Warriors too. I'm past that loss, don't care about it unless we end up losing homecourt advantage by a single loss or something... then that's a game I'll look back too.
This one was hard to watch... the Spurs just looked like the far superior team. We definitely missed Tyson.
As for West... I don't mind him taking those jumpers. They were generally good shots and as we all know, the mid range J is his game. If we want him to get back in rhythm he's going to need to just keep at it.
And yeah... taking out CP3 was an idiotic move on Byron's part. Check the game thread over at ATH to see how mad I was.

I'm baffled by the losses to crappy teams like the Warriors, but I'll easily shrug them off if we can step up for the big games. After all, teams like G-State won't be in the playoffs.
Of course we're not stepping up against the good teams consistently either.

Oh, I don't know, the Spurs banner was awesome (as in, I stared at it trying to figure out why CP didn't look quite like CP and then figured it out all at once, haha), but I love this one too! Hahaha! Great moments in Tyson vs. Prz!
