There's the letdown.
The Hornets won four of five games without Tyson Chandler and David West, four games they didn't really have any business winning. And tonight they came up against a team they really should have beaten. But they didn't. Two steps forward, one step back? Something like that I guess. Let's get to the bullets...
- First game back for David West and we lose. Not only that, but Peja Stojakovic -- who had been red hot in the absence of West and TC, averaging 23ppg in the previous five games on 56% shooting -- shot 3-11 from the field to finish with 11 points. Some folks might put a lot of the blame on West for the loss tonight, but I think that'd be pretty harsh. He came back with the right attitude, willing to do the dirty work and take his shots when they came to him. His jumper was rusty but he was a beast on the boards and played some decent help D from what I can remember. The problem was him playing too many minutes (31) and our offense relying too heavily on him in his first game back. A lot was asked of him and he just couldn't deliver, much as he tried. I expect we'll see him struggling for a few more games before he gets back to his usual form.
- I know the Warriors are a terrible defensive team, but I actually thought they did a solid job on Peja. What Monta Ellis gave up in height, he made up for in hustle, determination, and a little help from his teammates. Even if West hadn't played tonight, I doubt Peja would have been able to give us much. He was tortured on the defensive end, too, especially by Corey Maggette down the stretch. Peja completely lost him on that backdoor late, and the resulting three-point play pretty much sealed the deal.
- Chris Paul had a miserable first half. I believe he shot 3-9 and had 4 turnovers before the break. It really did seem like our best basketball of that half came when he was on the bench. He played much better in the second half and managed to finish with stud-like numbers, but still something seemed a little off with him tonight, like he could never get in a good flow.
- Some numbers: Warriors beat us 44-34 in points in the paint, and 14-6 on the break. We were +1 on the boards, 5-21 from deep, 26-33 from the stripe. G-State was 19-22 from the free throw line.
- From YoungFella in the game thread comments:
Can I ask a question? What does Posey have to do to get criticism from somebody other than me?
Obviously going back to back games with a combined 1 FG doesn't do it. If he shoots 3 airballs tomorrow night might somebody else think to blame our huge offseason acquisition at that point? ...
I went back to the win at Dallas and James W. Posey is a staggering 25 of 79 from the field since that game. He's been atrocious in our bad losses (Knicks, Minnesota, Warriors) and has had only 1 game where he shot 50% or better in that span. If he would have given us anything in any of those 3 bad loss games we'd have won each of them. - I hate that Ryan Bowen didn't play tonight.
- Julian Wright also got burned numerous times by Maggette for a stretch in the fourth, but he was magical in the first half. In the first quarter he was busy getting a couple of steals, taking a charge, knocking down a 21-footer, grabbing an offensive board and laying it back... he was awesome. Then right out of the gate in the second quarter he swats a shot by Turiaf, and later in the same defense he dives out of bounds after a loose ball and throws it back off Jamal Crawford. Hornets ball. Nice work, kid.
- Speaking of Crawford, coming into this game his personal career winning percentage (.306, 175-397) was the lowest among current NBA players with at least 350 games played. I'm guessing the win tonight doesn't do much to change that.
- Met some cool people at the game. The two seats right beside me in 305 usually have different people each night; always an adventure getting to know them. Anyways, tonight it was a couple originally from South Bend, Indiana, living around these fine parts now. Quote of the night came from the girl: "You Warriors think you're so awesome with your bright orange... (long pause) ... but you're not!"
- Sean Marks played 17 minutes and had a +/- of +14. Next best for New Orleans was Julian Wright's +1. I realize raw +/- numbers over-simplify things a little, but my eyes also informed me that Marks played well against the Warriors. He seems to have given up shooting jumpers (except for a pair he had to throw up late in the shot clock tonight), instead focusing on rebounding and keeping his hands ready around the basket whenever CP is in the vicinity. That's all working out great for him and the team. Keep it up, Kiwi.
I can't be too mad about this loss because the effort was there. This wasn't so much like the losses to the Kings and Bobcats earlier in the season. We actually came up with plenty of hustle plays tonight. We just shot the ball horribly and Maggette came up with big plays against shoddy defense down the stretch.
And of course we were expected to win, so we were always going to struggle. Thankfully we play the Spurs on the road tomorrow. Underdogs again. We'll probably win the damn thing.

Yep. Don't cope well with the mantle of 'favourites' do our Hornets.
I understated it in the game thread because it has taken a while for me to warm to him, but it really seems like Marks has used his smarts and adapted his game to what we need from him in games. He is putting his body in the right places inside, bringing the energy but now also control and doing exactly what a backup big man should do. I really want him to start against the Spurs since he will handle the roaming Bonner better than Hilton and likely give stronger help defense to West on Duncan.
I'm frustrated with Posey - like Youngfella - but I think it comes from a good place and just needs some strong words from coach. He is suffering the same self-imposed weight of the team as CP3. He is trying to do too much, forcing things. The guys need to trust each other, remember their roles, play within themselves and the worm will turn. I can't be too mad at Pose for the same reason I can't be mad at CP - the overstretching comes from a good place - of wanting to win and feeling a responsibility for the team. It just seems to have overtaken Pose a little lately.
I'm currently thinking our starting 5 should be Paul, Sual, Pejan West and Marks backed up by Posey, Daniels, Juju, Hilton and anyonebutDevin.

7-11 from 3 and 23 points doesn't count as "anything"? He carried the team late in Minnesota. I'm not saying he didn't have a HORRIBLE past two games, but come on, blame him for the correct things.

Of course James Posey can be criticized (I believe we all talked about his dumb fouls sometime last week), and of course he has bad games. Same goes for every player... sure he's become a fan favorite so he's not gonna be ragged on as much as Devin Brown, but generally he shouldn't be. As was pointed out in one of the threads, thus far this season Pose is shooting a career best from three point range. That's something.

We need A) Ryan Bowen and B) Ball rotation on offense.
This is what sucks about being a jump shooting team: when it doesn't fall, har har.

It's definitely much more of a boring game when D West plays. Bring it up the court, toss it to West, everybody stand around, West shoots, they rebound or he makes said shot, play some D, then repeat. The two games prior to last night were played at a much faster pace and involved a lot of TEAMWORK. I'm not blaming anything on West, but we play a differenty style of ball when he's in the game. I'm not convinced it's always for the better. It seemed like the team had grown comfortable with the style of play not involving West, and once he game back had trouble adjusting to having him back on the court. I know just about everybody did poorly last night, and I think it may have had something to do the failure to adjust to having West back. Hopefully, everyone worked the kinks out, D West will knock down those shots, and we'll win tonight.

We do need RB and I too was upset that he didn't get the PT tonight. I mentioned also that West played too many minutes. He was great on the boards all night but against a team like GS, we needed the points more and I think Byron should've had a tighter leash on David being that his offense wasn't there. I don't think anyone's actually blaming him for this loss.
The blame falls on everyone. JuJu did some nice things and Sean Marks had another solid game. Other than those 2, no one really played well. CP did his winning time schtick a quarter too early and no one came along for the ride. All of the turnovers killed us. The horridness that was the defense of Peja Stojakovic was magnified because he couldn't get it going on offense. I think it had little to do with GS' defense; Predrag just couldn't get it going. He can get a hand in someone's face but that's about it. There's a horrible feeling in the pit of my tummy that everything we've seen the last four or five games prior to this one will disappear. It certainly did last night.

Well, I want to apologize for overreacting. I usually laugh at other people who get so upset at a single loss out of 82 - I don't know what got into me. I wasn't miserable at the game or anything.
Part of me wants to argue about those efficiency stats but I think I'll just let it be. It's all irrelevant in the grand scheme of things which is that the Hornets will have to all step it in the playoffs and play their best ball of the season to get past either Los Angeles or San Antonio in the 2nd round.
As the regular season progresses it looks inevitable that we'd have to face both of them in order to reach the NBA Finals so I doubt poor play here or there makes much difference. If we're 3rd seed or 5th seed our path will basically be the same, and we'll need an Arizona Cardinals-like run to achieve everybody's dream.
So I promise to take a more "big picture" view of things from here on out. We'll need Posey as much or probably more than the Celts did last postseason to have a shot.

I--like Niall--can't be too upset with this one. The effort and desire was there, but we're not gonna beat many teams when Posey, Peja, Rasual, and D-West are all hitting iron. I actually loved Hubie Brown mentioning this. At one point late in the second half, McDonough tried to bait Hubie with a comment along the lines of, "Well, Hubie, the Hornets are struggling to beat a lesser opponent at home yet again. Is it the effort? What do they have to do to stop this?" Hubie immediately responded with a simple "Well, you have to shoot better than 33 percent." He then went on to say that it was actually impressive that the game was even close. I'm fairly certain that had Jackson and Van Gundy been on this broadcast, we would have been constantly bombarded with such ignorance as, "They're just not trying," and "This team is nowhere near last years group" and, of course, "They should run more, like last year when they were an up and down the court team". Thanks, Hubie.

I was at the game in Minnesota and hated that the Hornets lost but Posey was something else that game. The older man sitting next to me said something nearly every time Posey shot (like "oh no!") and he was proved right quite a bit.
