So the winning streak ended tonight as the Hornets went into Atlanta and got outworked for the win. A lot of the game boiled down to effort, but I have to give a lot of credit to the Atlanta defense - after getting torched in the first quarter, they stiffened their defense and always had a couple guys reaching in to bother any drive.
I'm not upset about the game. We lost to a solid team in their home arena, and despite poor play in the second and third quarters, the Hornets pushed them several times at the end and had their chances to take over.
Observations
- First off, the shooting wasn't there tonight. Atlanta packed the defense in more and more as the game wore on, and the Hornets didn't knock down their long range shots to force them to play a more honest perimeter defense to open driving lanes. It was so bad in the second half that they started almost every defensive posessions with no player within six or seven feet of the three point line. The Hornets almost always attacked by finding a post up mistmatch and trying to exploit that. Unfortunately, Posey and Butler may be bigger than the guys guarding them, but they aren't so good at scoring from the post, and little came of it except a pass back out to the perimeter with only a few seconds left on the clock.
- On the flip side, the Hawks scorched us from downtown as they generated the same open shots we were getting - too many open shots - and knocked them down regularly. The early uncontested looks clearly helped Joe Johnson and Flip Murray, neither of whom had been shooting well lately, but combined for 7-12 shooting from deep, including three end of shot-clock shots, and a leaner.
- Julian had a good game again tonight, finishing with 12 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover, and three fouls in 25 minutes. That's some nice production. It would have helped to have Peja back tonight to stick some deep shots for us, but definitely not to replace Julian, but to leave Posey on the bench . . .
- Because Posey was terrible. He was -23 for the game, by far the worst +/- of anyone, and it was for good reason. It wasn't even just his offensive problems, which were there, but his defense killed us too. Bad or non-existant rotations, stupid fouls, and too often he'd give up on stopping a drive and simply swipe at the guy as they went by, providing no resistance at all. Posey got 34 minutes, and was barely deserving 14 this game.
- Butler was good, but you could see how intent that Hawks defense was. His usual drives to the hoop almost always ended with a 12-foot pull up jumper. He stuck them at a nice clip, but it kept his efficiency low.
- West too had a hard time scoring. There were 7 or 8 point blank shots that dribbled around the rim and rolled off the other side that usually go in for him. Some of that was due to Horford and Josh Smith making him work extra hard to get the shots off, but a good half of them were just bad bounces of the ball.
- The second quarter killed the Hornets as they were outscored 12 to 27. Part of the blame falls on the second unit, but when the starters came back in, they didn't do much to change it. There were still lots of wide open threes, and some pretty lame passing.
- Don't let the box score mislead you - Chandler had his hands full on the glass with Horford all night. Chandler was always fighting with him for position, boxing him out, and generally settled on the defensive end for letting West grab the board while he fended Horford away. That's really the reason for the lopsided 17 defensive boards for West and 2 defensive boards for Chandler. His offensive output was limited - though a lot of that was due to the Hawks packing in their defense all night. Chandler had very little room to move, and he needs some to be effective.
On to the next game. I'll try to have something up about the bench tomorrow - and the next day is a game in Milwaukee, where the guys can start their next winning streak.

After watching the most of the game i couldn't fathom why Posey was in for most of the fourth quarter. Julian looked solid most of the game and Posey looked terrible and two steps slower than whoever he was guarding. The only thing I could come up with is maybe Pose was in for his 3pt range, but that definitely wasn't going for him so what's the point?

Tough one. This game was lost by us and won in the 2nd quarter by Atlanta. Scoring by quarter: Bees +8 after the 1st, -15 after the 2nd, Even steven after the 3rd, and -2 in the 4th. If we score just 6 or 7 more points in 2nd and defend a little better, we're talking about maybe a 2 or 3 point game down the stretch. We cut it down to 2 or 3 a few times after halftime but credit Atlanta for making plays and keeping us at arms' length.
An excerpt from the recap on Yahoo! Sports:
“The second quarter was awful, as simply put as that,” Scott said. “I thought our guys in the second quarter did a terrible job of defending those guys. Whatever we could do wrong in the second quarter we basically did.”
The Hornets’ reserves scored only seven points.
“It’s putting too much pressure on our starters,” Scott said, adding he plans to make adjustments to his second unit.
“I can’t sit there and continue to watch this,” he said.
What does Byron plan on doing? What could he possibly do at this point in the season? Doesn't matter who you bring off of the bench; when Chris Paul isn't on the floor, there's gonna be problems against most teams.
I thought Posey was horrible tonight. I really thought JuJu deserved the minutes that were given to Posey down the stretch. I really feel like unless it's CP or David, give the minutes to the guy who's playing better at that point in the game.
On to Wisconsin!

Ominous preface: I didn't watch the game (I live in Texas, hard to get games out here)
Maybe Byron went with Posey because he thought the savvy vet would be the best chance for a comeback. Also, in the playoffs, Posey is gonna be in the crunch time lineup even if he is playing horribly (unless Rasual or Peja are going frickin insane). Just gotta get used to it, work out the kinks, live to fight another day, and hope the Hawks take out the Celts somehow :D

I'm really hoping Posey's much talked-about playoff super powers actually exist if hes gonna get all of the crunch time minutes in the post season regardless of the play in the previous three quarters.

I await your post analysing (UK spelling :P) the bench in earnest, Ryan. Coach Scott said he'd do something about the these terrible 2nd quarters we keep having, which is good, because something has to be done. Jusst as we got the problems with the ball movemrnt & cuts/off the ball screens fixed a bit, the bench rears it's ugly head. It hasn't had a good game since the OT loss to the Lakers over 3 weeks ago.
Maybe Posey is getting too many minutes & it's wearing him out, because his "impact" tonight was shocking, and not for the 1st time this season. I've always told myself & friends that I'd reserve judgement on him until the playoffs are done. Last year, even when the Pargo-Bonzi-JuJu-West/Bowen-Hilton/Ely 2nd qtr Unit couldn't score, they we're still able to defend. The backups can do neither right now and it's too much to ask the starters to come in and swing that momentum back around for us game after game. Coach Scott is notorious for playing it safe, but sending out that bench is now a hazardous risk in itself.
JuJu, like we've seen with Butler, is now clearly having a ball playing with the starters & the more minutes he gets, the better he is. I'd rather see him start, get 20-25 mins, get yelled at by the likes of CP3 & D-West, and iron out his mistakes over these last 20 games, so he knows what he's doing come playoff time. It's sad that JuJu does little wrong and yet he still has to sit & watch while Posey commits the dumb plays Scott would almost certainly yank JuJu for.
If we were to roll out Daniels-Mo Pete-Peja-Posey-Marks/Hilton lineup, with Peja & Posey both playing a sort of "3.5" role together, would it be so bad? I'd keep Brown & Bowen as the 11th & 12th men. This would reduce Posey's minutes a bit, possibly making him more effective, Peja could still get his 30-35 off the bench (and in Peja's case this is a serious consideration because unlike last year, he is now fulfilling all the clichés that people love to say about his defence), and hopefully give this 2nd Unit a scoring punch & a fighting chance. Paul & West cannot play 40+ minutes anymore, it's just too much.
Hope I haven't spoilt some parts of the big post you were planning Ryan - I just needed to vent :)

@Akademik: Posey is a player that can be huge for you if used correctly. When he was with Miami and Boston during the championship seasons, he was on the floor in late game situations. Other than that, he was played in spurts. 3 or 4 minutes here, 2 to 5 minute stretch there. I think our problem is that we're treating him like a starter when he's a career bench player. Miami and Boston treated him like a bench player which is why they were successful. I also believe that other than his spot up/wide open 3 pointers even with his ability to post up, we rely on him too much for offense. I'd personally like to see Posey play fewer minutes unless he's having a great game, someone's in foul trouble/injured, or it's a late game situation.
At the rate we've got him going, I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't or didn't give us much in the playoffs.

@Broken Heat:
Yes that's what I was hinting at, Posey does seem to play well in bursts, hitting timely shots and giving swarming intense D. You can only keep that style of play up for so long, however. Meanwhile, the opposite is true for the likes of Butler & JuJu, who need more minutes to get into a rhythm and build their confidence up. If anyone is still having doubts about the Phoenix, check this page:

& Just look at his recent numbers. Playing the best ball of his life. Him wearing no.45 is kinda appropriate for such a special comeback :P

Man, you know I am a Posey fan, but he had an awful game last night. I was also wondering why we didn't see more of JuJu. There was this one time in the 3rd or 4th quarter when Posey was guarding someone and I opened my mouth to yell, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DEFENSE IS NOT RUNNING AROUND BEHIND HIM AND GRABBING HIS JERSEY--" But I only got about halfway through it before the whistle blew. The ref agreed with me.
What gets me is that Byron is so stubborn. When we beat the Mavs the other night, one of the Dallas blogs had the following Einstein quote at the beginning of their recap: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Kind of appropriate for the bench situation. Really the starters situation too, when they're not scoring like in the 2nd quarter. You can't just do the same thing and hope it'll work itself out. You can't keep playing the same 7-8 guys when one of the other 5-6 might be the spark the game needed.

OK, Im no analyst by any stretch of the imagination, so take this with a grain.
Why doesnt the rotation take CP and AD so they work opposite their own people? Our starters with AD and CP with the bench more? BScott seems to be starters or bench, but that isnt working. We all know CP can work magic with whoever is on the floor and AD can do some good stuff if the better guys are on the floor. We may not hit the highs we sometimes reach, but we also end up without the lows.

How about this? Start Julian. Make Peja the sixth man, and bring him out with Mo. Hilton/Marks for Tyson. AD as needed. How's the bench look now?
