It was a tale of two halves tonight. In the first half, Houston's physical defense worked against them and the Hornets went to the line 14 times. In the second, the defense began to tighten and the Hornets went to the line 5 times. The Hornets were unable to handle the increased pressure and lost.
- I know this isn't a popular idea, and I can already hear the outraged grumbling that these are athletes who shouldn't be tired, but once again Paul and Butler played 44 minutes. West played 42. Chandler played 38. These sorts of minutes have been going on for half a dozen games now. Chandler is on a gimpy ankle. West has to bounce on a ball when he's on the bench to keep his back from tightening up. Butler is required to run off curls all the time and take the other teams toughest offensive player, and Paul has the ball in his hands most of the game and is always receiving contact. That's just too many minutes, and it showed as the jumpers in the fourth fell mostly short, which is a sign of tired legs. They aren't going to be able to keep this up for another month without breaking down.
- Julian Wright missed four dunks tonight, but I don't give a damn. He was cutting hard to the basket and putting pressure on the defense. It's nice to have a wing player willing to be aggressive going to the basket. His control will come with a little more experience. You will notice the one time he tried to drive on Artest directly, Artest gave him a little body bump, and stripped him like I said he would in the Preview. Yay. Maybe I should start predicting good things like the Hornets winning.
- 3-11 from deep. This remains important. The team is constructed around penetration and three point shooting - and when the three point shooting isn't there, the penetration becomes infinitely harder. Scott may have to play Peterson just to get another person on the perimeter to hit shots. I don't see why he can't take more of Butler's load anyways. Let Butler get another 8-10 minutes of rest, Byron.
- You saw Ron Artest in his glory and at his worst tonight. Artest tried to be a guard in the first half, jacking up terrible shots off the dribble and hitting nothing. In the second, he took the ball inside, used his strength and drilled more than half his shots.
- This is the first time I can remember Scola getting the best of West - and get the best of him he did. Usually West gets irritated by Scola and punishes him. Tonight, he got irritated, kept missing, then got frustrated and fell apart. We've all seen him do that before, it was unfortunate it happened tonight.
- Paul still got into the paint against the tightened defense, but his shots were much tougher to get off in there. 29 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and a pair of turnovers.
- I went back and watched Tyson in the third, and you could tell that ankle was really bothering him. He grimaced about six times when pushing off of it to go up for a rebound, and he started to lose his positioning for rebounds more often as the game wore on. This is pretty alarming.
That's enough, this isn't really a game I want to dwell on. We get the Timberwolves in town on Wednesday. Have a good night.

I know we're not supposed to complain about officiating, but the second half of this game was ridiculously horrible. It was like a home playoff game for Houston. In the first half, we were getting fouled, they were calling them, and we went to the line. In the second half we were getting fouled, few calls were made, and instead we got numerous offensive fouls. Battier flopped after West stood perfectly still and straight, and West got the Technical. Mtumbo argues for a minute in the ref's face, no Tech. Non-calls on at least two Houston travels, plus several over the backs, push-offs, etc. JuJu got knocked to the ground on a loose ball and called for allowing gravity to function. This started right after we did get in our rhythm to start the 3rd to go up by 11, and continued all night. Tyson just called called for an illegal screen on the back door of his house.
31 FTs for Houston versus 19 for us.
23 PFs for us, 14 for them. Doesn't count offensive or techs. I don't think Houston got any of either.
Posey was awful. He earned at least 3 stupid fouls. Marks was good in the first, bad in the second. Rasual was way off, as was DWest for most of the game. However, it wouldn't have been a game if not for the refs. Sometimes it sucks to be a fan of a small-market team.

I felt our complete inability to hit jumpers or grab ANY offensive rebounds in the 2nd killed us, and I know we didn't lose BECAUSE of the officating... but then I'm also right there with you. Some of those calls were inexplicable. Please explain how Mutumbo can get up in a refs face waving his arms and not get T-ed up. It was unreal. And what the hell did Posey get called for at the end when he dove for the jump ball? (Besides sucking)

Well we weren't allowed to play defence in the second half thanks to all the early fouls. Also, our offence is HIDEOUS -- turn your head the other direction hideous. Draining the shotclock down to the last straw... I say the Hornets should start each possession with only 10 seconds on the clock to force them to speed it up.

I am almost glad that Tyson has a sore ankle...it allows me to forgive him for having only 7 rebounds against a Yao-less Rockets team. Even with a gimp ankle, he needs to pull in more rebounds and own Mutombo who is now 42 years old. I assumed Byron had him in the game for so long for the sole purpose of dominating the boards. IMO Byron stuck with him way too long when the Rockets were playing small...for a long time, Sciola, Artest, Landry and two guards played and Tyson was struggling defensively to keep up. In fact, Byron didnt really switch to a smaller, quicker lineup until TC got in foul trouble.
And the refs made me want to puke. With the Hornets down by 2, the Rockets guard was on the ground after his rebound right in front of my seats and I watched his pivot foot slide a full 12 inches. This blatant travel would have given the ball back to us with a chance to tie. The ref pointed at his foot to confirm that it did not move...I was dumbfounded. Bad calls happen, but last night there were several ridiclous no calls, late foul calls, missed traveling calls, etc. that seemed a bit hard to believe.
Several of you have been complaining about how bad we have looked the past few weeks and while I havent been able to watch the last few road games, I started to remind you all that we have won 8 of the last 10 and then 7 of the last 10. I am very glad I didnt because the team on the floor looked as bad as the team did a few weeks back when D. West and TC were both hurt and unable to play. I am officially nervous.

Exhaustion, even the almighty Chris Paul can't escape it's grasps. Play a few minutes shy of a whole game night in and night out and it's going to take it's toll.
All teams need to do is survive our bursts and wait for the energy to disappear. Then clamp down and cut our throat.
Also doesn't help that they pretty much are free to ignore the shooters and focus on West and Paul.
Can we make it any harder on them?

Hey everyone, apologies for all the down-time today. The site has been moved to an upgraded server so hopefully these troubles are behind us for good.

We need to put a beat down on Minnesota so I can forget about this game. I never feel like you lose a game because of officiating but I feel like you lose if you let it affect you and that's what happened. We see teams every night be the victim of some bad calls and they're still able to pull out a W but that's what the great teams do; we're not that.
Can't really say much about the guys being tired. Just another reason why our postseason outlook is bleak. I'm really surprised at this point that CP's wheels haven't completely fallen off at this point. David, however, is more likely to fall apart. Given the fact that he's a big with back issues and no reliable backup at his position who's playing 40+ minutes a night taking a beating when he's trying to play in the post, I'm surprised that he's been able to give solid production at the very least. I really think he's starting to wear down.
My optimism is slowly disappearing...

First off I have to agree the refs have been beyond bad this year. It's just shocking that they put 40, 50 and 60 year old guys out and expect them to keep up with professional athletes. Here's a million dollar idea. Take guys who are like 23 years old and have 20-10 vision (me!). Don Never is it more apparent to me (and people in my section) then when I can make a correct call from 16 rows back and they miss it from 10 feet. So many times I corrected the refs and sure enough, when the replays were shown my call was the right one. How many times did the Rockets travel? How many times were they called for it? I don't have exact numbers, but they never did get a traveling call despite playing the entire second half without dribbling even once.
I want an NBA explanation for David West's foul and then the subsequent technical. Best I remember he was standing still facing the basket. The Rocket player ran behind him and tripped over his stationary foot. A foul is called. West is shocked (obviously) and turns around for an explanation. INSTANT technical. WHAT!!?!?!?! Mutumbo was screaming at the refs and he gets nothing. Rick Addelmen was doing the same over the Mutumbo call and again they get nothing. Explain this double standard to me.
It's unacceptable to me that I pay 4k a year for season tickets and calls like that are made. If I find out that one of those refs had money on the game or was paid to give Houston the win it wouldn't surprise me at all. It looked like a rigged game in the 2nd half. The calls the refs made were not only terrible, but so utterly enthusiastic it almost seems that they wanted it to be known that they were cheating.
A few questions for Byron-
Julian Wright is better than Posey so why doesn't he play in the 4th quarter? His plus minus numbers are far and away better every single game. In the last 3 games Julian has the best +/- on the entire team, but isn't he on the floor when it counts? Why??? Against Chicago when he was on the floor for 22 minutes and actually were +4 in that time. The other 26 minutes we were -22. Coincidentally (or not) Posey played 24 minutes with us being -23 in that time. What is so hard to see about this?
How come nobody ever moves on offense? We literally stand around until the shot clock is at 10 almost every possession. Give the ball to Paul every single time right away and start running the play. 20 seconds is a lot more than 10 to get a nice shot off.
When the bench is in why can't we just run a high screen and take 3's? It can't work any worse than what we do now.
Why do you play Tyson if he is hurt AND struggling? 7 rebounds? Nice...
How is it possible that a random little girl at halftime can be so much better at shooting than Tyson?
Will Tyson EVER make a shot that isn't a dunk, tip in, or free throw?

apologies for the shoddy writing. It's been a long St. Patricks day and proofreading is hard when you are seeing two of every word.

No worries, JoJo. It appears to me that Byron is playing Posey over Julian right now because he is trying to keep the floor spread in the fourth. The Hornets go to their money high pick and roll then, and having shooters capable of knocking down threes is essential to that strategy.
Julian just isn't that kind of threat right now.

Question: doesn't it seem like our second unit would be more effective running a more up tempo offense? I know it sounds strange, given that our second unit is all old guys (Daniels, Posey, Peterson), but they seem to do pretty well. And second units around the league are meant to provide energy and do little things to keep their teams going well, even though they don't have as much talent as the starters (usually). So why don't we pull Juju with like 4 minutes in the first, then put him back in with Posey in the second and throw out a lineup of Daniels, Posey, Wright, Peterson/Butler, and Marks/Chandler? Wright and Posey are big enough to rebound moderately well, Posey and Peterson both can space the floor, and if they are only running for like 4-5 minutes against the other team's second unit, it seems like they could be pretty effective.
