Can't say I'm too impressed with the win tonight. The Hornets did overcome a 4-point deficit with 2:30 remaining which made for an exciting finish at the Arena, but with each passing game I'm left feeling less and less optimistic about how we'll fare in the playoffs.
Coming off two miserable losses and with the lowly T-Wolves on the menu, I had high hopes for a dominant bounce back performance in this one, but I was left disappointed. David West looked tired and frustrated out there, Chris Paul had to play the entire second half yet again, we blew a big lead yet again, and we seemed equally inept at closing out on Minnesota's shooters and keeping in front of them on the drive (when Brian Cardinal is beating guys off the dribble, you know it's bad). The T-Wolves were the more aggressive team for most of the game, despite having played last night in San Antonio.
But let me take my head out of the oven and try focus on the positives in this one. It's no fun talking about the many things the Hornets suck at. On to some happy bullets:
- David West might have struggled for most of the game, but he came up big for us down the stretch, repeatedly getting to the free throw line and running the two-man game to perfection with CP to get the late dunk that proved to be the game-winner. It was also good to see West keep his composure despite his struggles. This was the type of game where you could easily have expected him to get a tech or commit an overly-hard foul, but he was able to keep his head down and stay focused.
- Chris Paul finished with nice and shiny numbers as per usual. 26 points (10-of-21 FGs), 10 assists, 5 steals, 4 boards and 2 turnovers in 41 minutes. As a team we haven't been much of a deep threat lately (hurry back Peja), tonight being no exception. As a result, the T-Wolves were able to pack the paint pretty good and keep CP out of there. He had to work hard for his numbers.
- Special mention goes to that three-point play Chris dropped at the end of the third quarter, when he went the length of the court against Randy Foye. Foye resigned to foul him hard after CP unleashed a wicked crossover, grabbing him above the shoulders on the takedown. Somehow Chris got the shot up there anyway and it dropped. Reminiscent of that crazy reverse flip shot CP threw in against the Spurs in the playoffs last year. Not a similar shot, but just as insane.
- Hilton Armstrong delivered one of his best games of the season. 12 points (6-of-8 FGs), 8 boards and 4 blocks. He made some nice moves without the ball, scored in a variety of ways and showed some great hustle playing D and rebounding. Most of his best moments came in the first half. He seemed to fade a little down the stretch and Kevin Love got the better of him a few times. The foul trouble may have limited his effectiveness. Not a bad fill-in though for the injured Tyson Chandler.
- Also worthy of praise is Julian Wright. I was disappointed Byron again chose to play Posey ahead of JuJu in the fourth quarter. I thought Wright was great in the first half, especially on help defense and rotating to help box out Love. He and Armstrong seemed to be the only two guys we had with any pep in their step.
- Mo Pete gave us positive contributions on both ends. He delivered 8 points in 15 minutes, and was also a big reason for Mike Miller's 1-of-6 shooting performance. Good to have you back, Mo.
- Lastly, great job by the fans tonight. There were plenty of times when the Hornets probably deserved to be booed, but instead of resorting to that everyone would get on their feet and rally the troops. That can only have helped the team keep the ship straight and land the victory. Take a bow, New Orleans. You're pretty damn good at this pro basketball fandom thing.
That'll do. Next up we've got the Grizzlies in town on Friday.
In rival action tonight, Portland cruised to an easy win at Indiana (dammit), the Nuggets rallied late and won in Memphis (dammit), and unfortunately the Pistons couldn't pull off a double-OT win in dangerous and scary Houston (dammit).
Last thing: don't miss the excellent new Tyson Chandler wallpaper by Dariusz, now available in the vault.

These last few wins could easily be dismissed for 'a-win-is-a-win', but in all sincerity, shouldn't we be cruising through this easy schedule? I know we step up against adversity, but last minute wins against bad teams doesn't build much confidence.
It's almost as if we're the worst of the best. Please please PLEASE prove me wrong on this, Hornets.

It's like we're the worst of the best...no, that would be Dallas. We, however, are the second-worst of the best. This was a disappointing win if that makes sense. Only way this game should've been this close is if AJ was playing.
Nice to see Mo Pete play more than a handful of minutes. His 8 points were huge...even more huge when you have a 1 point victory. Only positive thing to take from this game is that Chris Paul played another 950 minutes tonight and didn't collapse from exhaustion at the final buzzer. That's always a plus for us. When I'm in doubt I just repeat to myself that we're (insert W-L here) and on our way to the playoffs (almost certainly for a short period of time) and that it could be worse. Coach Scott is a part of the problem, too. I'll stop before I start in on him.
@Ryan or Niall: Can one of you guys tell me how many of (the percentage) Chris Paul's baskets are assisted on or at least tell me where I can find out?

For the first in his entire NBA career David West acknowledged that a foul call on him was legit. I am so proud! Really he looked perfectly content after he fouled as opposed to his usual disbelieving scowl.
Awful game by the Hornets. Byron Scott is a moron sometimes. At one point in the 4th quarter Minn easilly scored 4 times in a row in the paint. Want to know why? We didn't have a center in the game. What the f$@# is with that? I just can't figure out why it takes him so lon got make the adjustment.
To the hornets post game radio crew at 106.7- I called in earlier about Wright never seeing 4th quarter playing time and your response, while factually correct about TO rate, ignored that Wright has recently played much better D than Posey and provides us with energy that nobody else seems to have anymore. It ignored that in order for us to improve as a team Wright needs to see meaningful minutes. It ignored that since starting, Wright has the highest plus/minus on the team (yes higher than Paul). It ignored that he is the only player on the Hornets improving as the season goes on. I understand the need to have 3pt shooters in ther late, but I don't feel that sacrificing our only ONLY ONLY ONLY athletic big man is the best way to achieve that. Lastly it ignored that Posey has been garbage as of late. Against the Rockets, Wright shut down Artest. When Posey came in Artest exploded (see 4th Q stats).
Lastly- Hilton Armstrong is so mch better at offense than Chander, sometimes I think that I am watching Dwight Howard intead of Hilton.
One more- Why does NOBODY take advantage of free appetizers after the game? There were like 10 of us tonight at the Cheesecake Bistro out of 6,000 that won. I would hate it if there were 1000 of us, but 50 or so would be a fun crowd after a win...
AND- Great job by the crowd tonight. No way we win that game without us. I agree with Ryan that we are finally starting to figure this whole fan thing out. It's really impressive how we never boo our own players. Looking at the whole organization, the biggest jump in performance from last year has been the fans. We are really becoming some of the best in the league. No less than 6 times tonight we provided energy that contributed to the win.
Player of the game- The fans. No disprespect to CP3, but we were awesome tonight. Th ebest thing is that we weren't even that happy that we won. Normally you hear 12,000 "whooooos" coming out of the game. We acknowledged we shoudl have won that game and refused to be excited about the close loss afterwards. During the game however, we were AWESOME.
Sure hope that cameraman who tried dunking is ok lol....
Anyone else hear that the guy on the halftime show rode a 115 foot unicycle?
Section 120 gets no love ever. It's just annoying at this point... Nobody ever gets on the jumbotron for anything. We dance and don't even get a look from a camera man. We NEVER get any shirts, lottery balls, or basketballs. Once in 2 years have we had a season ticket holder of the game. We never are even considered for any sort of on court performances. We don't even get balloons to waive during free throws while the section acros from us (118) has hundreds. Piss poor Hornets. For as good as you are at putting on a show you have failed for years to take care of some of your most loyal fans. I know 20 people who have had seats for 2 years now and none of us have ever been been made to feel special in any way. My own rep wouldn't give me a wristband to the beer garden at 6:34 the other day. Thanks Blake... Way to show me you care about the 7k i've paid you the last 2 years.

Free Mo: I honestly don't consider Dallas to be the worst of the best, but perhaps the best of the worst. There's a subtle difference, but the point being that our bees are capable of so much, yet we falter just enough to prevent my wholehearted approval. As opposed to my Mavs who are good, but have little potential to be better.
Let's find a rhythm guys. Or maybe some plays that exploit our strengths.

@ Free Mo: I'm not sure where to find full season stats for that either. Perhaps Ryan does.
A couple of things I forgot to mention in the recap:
- We actually extended the lead when Chris Paul was sitting in the second quarter. I know we were playing the TWolves, but it's so rare we perform well in that stretch that it's worth celebrating. I don't consider Antonio Daniels a good shooter at all (see how flat that shot is?), but he knocked down a few and Posey got us some scores from the post.
- The TWolves got back in the game when they went small ball midway through the second quarter. They had Love, Carney, Gomes, Foye and Telfair on the floor, with Carney doing a pretty good job and getting plenty of help D'ing up West. Those smaller athletic lineups seem to always give us problems (remember the Hawks games, and I'm pretty sure the Bucks had a unit like that that gave us fits).

I just want to second Niall's comments on the Nola crowd. For example, when West missed a free throw late, the crowd as quiet. But then, someone started cheering and clapping and then so were most of the crowd. West sinks the second. Even louder response. The crowd believed.
Bottom line is it as a win. A Western Conference win. That's all that matters.

Was I the only one who thought Armstrong gave us NO defensive presence in the lane? I have no recollection of three of his four blocks but plenty of memory of Gomes, Ollie, Love, et al. getting to the rim. I know his stat line looks great, but I came away frightened for a Chandler-less defense.

@Jojo: "Lastly- Hilton Armstrong is so mch better at offense than Chander, sometimes I think that I am watching Dwight Howard intead of Hilton."
Wow! Now that's impressive! I didn't think it was legal in America to exaggerate that much!
I'm still not too worried about the playoffs...every team is gonna go through a funk (I know, I've been saying that all season) but we still are in good position. And let's be honest, here: who doesn't think we could beat Denver, Portland, Houston, or Dallas in a 7 game series?
You are all making it sound as though we are terrible and will be swept in the first round. That won't happen (unless we play the Jazz, the only team I'm sure we have no shot against).
There is something positive to take from these games: we can come together in crunch time. It's happened a LOT this year, and not every team blows out others. Look at the Spurs, they really never blow out teams, even terrible ones. It's not as bad as everyone says, overreacting and calling for the trade or firing of everyone in the organization not named Chris is just useless
Also, I'm encouraged by something else I just: we have more guys this year who can shoulder a scoring load from time to time. Last year, who scored for us? Paul, West, Peja, and Pargo if he had a good game. This year, we have Paul, West, Butler, Peja, and Posey, with the last two usually able to use a mismatch. We've seen that Peja can still put up big numbers for 4-5 straight games if he has to. If we play the Spurs, what are they going to do? Either shut down Paul and West and make other guys beat them (which we could do), or shut down other guys and make Paul and West beat them (which the Lakers know they can do). I think I'm just rambling now, actually, I probably stopped making sense 5 minutes ago. Point is that everyone here needs to stop overreacting. If we're too harsh, our guys will end up like my boy Vince Young, getting clinically depressed after our team wins...

bigindian15: Vince Young had a low personal EQ (and IQ). I don't think anybody on the Bees squad would succumb to criticism like that.
Plus, I don't think we're denouncing this team that readily, but speaking for myself, I'm losing confidence in the team's capability against second round teams. I'm not worried about the teams we can beat; I'm worried about everything else. Cavs (@home... seriously what's up there?), Green, Lakeshow, Spurs, Jazz... I'm thinking deep playoff run unlike some others, and they're causes of concern regarding our current productivity.
And while we do have a more solid core this year, that doesn't hide our reliance for jump shots. I never trust teams as such, evidenced from my comments even last year. And aside from CP/DX, I don't see anybody who can consistently create their own shot. We're brutally effective in what we do right, but we have some gaps in our armour that I don't believe we fully addressed coming into this season.
Sure a win is the only thing that matters, but considering the circumstances, the win doesn't feel completely right. We're that good (best PG in the world, anybody?), so why does it appear we're struggling?

@djcj: I agree with your assessment of Hilton, but only in the second half when he was in foul trouble. I thought that killed his defensive presence. In the first half though I noted numerous times where he rotated well to stop penetration, filled a passing lane or boxed out an opposing big. He had nice stats too, but that's got little to do with my praise for him in this one.
@bigindian15: Sorry, but I gotta disagree with you. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our playoff chances. "who doesn't think we could beat Denver, Portland, Houston, or Dallas in a 7 game series?" Yes, we could beat all four of those teams in a seven game series, but I think it's just as likely that they'll beat us. Well, maybe not Dallas, because Chris Paul owns them, but the other three teams are no pushovers, especially if they have homecourt advantage. My biggest concern is that we still play too much one-on-one basketball, still too much reliance on Chris Paul and David West to create something out of nothing. In a playoff series, opposing coaches can find those weaknesses and exploit them, and I don't believe our coaching staff will be able to counter.
Before the season began I thought we could compete for a championship. Around the new year I had come to believe that we probably wouldn't make it out of the second round. These last few games I'm starting to worry that we might not even win a playoff series.
All that said, I do of course hope I'm wrong and that the Hornets rip through the playoffs, making me and my predictions look foolish in the process.

Think back to last year at this time.....
Even though we had an awesome record, nobody thought we could beat Dallass. Nobody expected us to blow out San Antonio in 3 home games and take it to 7.
We have the same players or better players at every position based on their historical Win Score or PER. The same players are a year older, more injured, and maybe a bit more tired, but remember the playoffs are a bit more restful than this part of the regular season. We have that supposedly critical playoff experience now, plus a lot of crunch time regular season experience.
If Peja comes back healthy and Chandler's ankle gets back to 90% by the time the playoffs start, we can compete with anyone. If enough individual players are injured or play below their demonstrated potential, we can lose to anyone.

I know, 100%, that we would beat Dallas again. I am very confident that we would beat Denver and/or Portland. We've played well against both of those teams this year. I think there is little chance we lose a series with any of those teams as long as health isn't an issue.
I still think Western Conf. Finals is an attainable goal... but I also feel a lot warier about the team than I did at the start of the season, or even a couple of weeks ago.
