Final score in this, the final game of the regular season, was 105-98 after overtime. The result, coupled with the Rockets loss to the Mavericks in Dallas, means the Hornets fall to the 7 seed and will face the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.
Before we flip completely to playoff mode, let me throw out a few thoughts on the Spurs game:
- Tyson Chandler returned from that ankle injury and looked pretty good out there. He played just 20 minutes (all in the first half), scored 10 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. His explosiveness wasn't quite there, but he was still able to crush a few oops and challenge guys in the lane. I never once noticed him hobbling on that ankle.
- Perhaps the best measure of Tyson's contributions can be drawn from looking at Tim Duncan's performance tonight. Timmy played 16 minutes in the first half (all of those minutes coming while Chandler was on the floor), and managed only 5 points (1-of-3 shooting), 5 boards and 2 assists with 3 turnovers. Not having to worry about Tyson in the second half and OT, Duncan played 18 minutes and managed 15 points (6-of-8 shooting), 14 rebounds, 4 assists and only one turnover.
- Some folks might want to criticize Byron Scott for playing guys heavy minutes tonight (47+ for West and CP, 41+ for Rasual and Peja). I can understand that, and it's definitely not ideal, but I'm glad we went all out to get the win. I'd rather we play tough like that and lose than just sit back and get blown out.
- The struggles of Peja and Rasual continue. They were a combined 6-of-19 shooting tonight for a total of 15 points. I recall Peja getting some wide open looks but he wasn't able to hit. Not the best time of the season for our shooters to be slumping.
- David West and Chris Paul were warriors once again. 34 points (15-of-24 FGs) and 7 boards for West; 26 points (9-of-21 FGs), 14 assists, 7 boards, 2 steals and 1 turnover for CP. I often read back over my recaps and feel bad that I didn't talk more about the contributions our All-Stars made. Fact is they both come through with great performances about 95 percent of the time; it's almost a given that they play well. Whether the Hornets win or lose though usually depends more on the supporting cast playing well. Tonight we got little from our shooters and the Spurs reserves outscored ours 25-13. That adds up to a loss more often than not.
- Hilton Armstrong was a healthy inactive. What are the chances he fails to make Byron's playoff roster?
Looking forward to reading lots more observations from this one in the comments. I didn't jot down my usual notes during the game as I was busy liveblogging over at TrueHoop, so I'm sure there's quite a bit I missed.
Quick first thoughts on a Hornets-Nuggets playoff series
I'm thinking along the same lines of thekourt in the game thread comments:
...this might have been the best possible set of results for us. We are the 7th seed, but we're on a side of the bracket away from LA, Utah, and Houston, three teams we do not play well. Our first series will be against Denver, a team we can handle and that has no successful playoff experience (and hasn't for years). Billups can't guard Paul at all. If we win, we play either a depleted and tired SA team, or a Dallas team that we own. Apart from the fact that we have to be road warriors, this is a very winnable path to the West finals.
I'll leave the in-depth statistical analysis and comparisons of the Hornets and Nuggets to Ryan and At The Hive, but here are a few other things to consider:
- We were 2-2 against the Nuggets this season, with Tyson missing all of those games. We beat the Nuggets 105-100 in Denver on November 27; they were fully healthy. We lost 100-105 in Denver on January 3; again, the Nuggets were fully healthy. On January 28 we beat the Nuggets 94-81 in New Orleans; both Carmelo Anthony and David West missed that game. On March 25, the Nuggets beat us at the Arena, 101-88; both Nene and Peja Stojakovic missed that game.
- In three games against the Nuggets this season, Peja averaged 20.7 points on 56 percent shooting, 50 percent from three. The numbers he put up against the other six playoff teams in the West this season pale significantly in comparison to those. You can see them all here.
- Should be some good storylines with ex-Hornets J.R. Smith and Chris Andersen playing major reserve roles for the Nuggets. Will they try to do too much against their old team, or will they make Byron and Bower regret getting rid of them?
- A comment from Nuggets blogger Jeremy Wagner during the TrueHoop live blog earlier this evening: "As a Nuggets fan I would much rather see Dallas than New Orleans. With Chandler back, even if he is not 100%, they scare me much more than the Mavs."
The date and time of Game 1 has yet to be announced. I believe the playoff schedules are released tomorrow afternoon some time, and we'll post them up here as soon as we get word.

I'm inclined to believe HiltonWatch should be played a la Ryan Bowen. Quick, short spurts, but definitely not our second option. The only thing he'd have to improve on in that sense would be basketball IQ/coordination.
But while I'd love to give him a chance, I don't see him getting on the playoff squad, although I'd prefer him over Devin Brown. What's the roster count for the postseason?

Sucks that we didn't win but if we had, the Rockets would've locked up the division and we would've played them in the 1st round. Long story short, I've never been so content after a Hornets loss. As for the series against the Nuggets, I'd like to see AD and CP play together when the opportunity is there. I know Denver will try to trap CP at times and it would help to have another ball handler on the floor.

Oh, and regarding the standings, how bizarre are they? I would never have anticipated the ranks:
1. Lakeshow
2. Nugs
3. Spurs
4. Jailblazers
5. Smoggy Houston
6. Dallas
7. NOLA
8. Jazz
I know injuries have plagued the Spurs, Jazz and our bees, but for some reason the standings just look bizarre to me. Finished at 7, below the Mavs? Jailblazers finish fourth? Spurs still top 3? But I digress, it's about match-ups now, which are intangibly in our favour with a healthy squad. Playoff time, baby. What's the war cry this year? Fan Up?

Louisianagyrl, we don't need a CP-AD tandem. That's what Devin Brown's for.

Who else is insanely pumped about that Portland/Houston series?
That should be a gem. I'm geeked for the playoffs to start.

@YoungFella: I am..I love to watch Portland play. I have a huge crush on B-Roy's game
Other than than our Bees, I'm looking forward to Por/Hou and SA/Dal in the West and Atl/Mia and Bos/Chi in the East. I really can't wait. I'm anxious to see who gets the first scheduled game.

@ Mark: The roster count is better than I thought. This from ESPN:
##
Allen Iverson's name will appear on the Detroit Pistons' playoff roster ... but that's only because league rules mandate Iverson's inclusion. The NBA requires the 16 playoff teams to submit a roster including no less than 13 players by 3 p.m. Thursday. The Pistons must add Iverson because they only have 13 players under contract, two short of the league's permitted roster maximum of 15 players.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4071848
##
Apparently you can only have 12 players active for each game and one inactive, but the inactive player can be changed for each game.
So it sounds like it won't be much different from the regular season then, except Byron's rotation will be shorter.

Poz sure wasn't too clutch tonight. Missed free throws, lost track of Finley and got blown up by the Duncan pick for the game tying shot. On the other hand, at least Poz got to the ball when Peja lost control, but it could be argued his same inbound pass to Peja sailed a bit and put Peja in peril (that's for Gil...) by barely landing inside half court. I hope Poz gets a little more focused now that the playoffs have finally arrived.
This game was the exact opposite of the Miami game, in the end. Crucial missed FT by the team leading led to a huge 3 at the buzzer, and the big shot gave the comeback team all the momentum.
As CP noted, obviously bumming that San Antonio won the SW Division because we failed to shut the door. "It's all about execution. We have to find ways to win." {paraphrased quote w/ Jordy}
All the same, I'd rather play Denver. They are a team that will let you back in a game, and they often take dumb shots and lose their patience. They have shot blocking, but they are not a stout defensive minded team. However, they played very good ball down the stretch, and when the Nuggets shoot well they are dangerous.
With overall their lack of playoff experience, it would be terrific to steal one of these early games in Denver. 'Melo hasn't experienced much playoff success, so he, Birdman, and JR might press vs the Hornets, and if we get a glimmer of victory, we need to snatch it away from them, deprive them of confidence in front of their home fans.

This isn't exactly what I wanted but close enough: We avoid the three teams I'm uncomfortable with until the Western Conference Finals where I'll take care of the rest.
Shhh.

I think our first unit will be well matched against the Nuggets starting five. Poz should be able to handle their reserve forwards (Kleiza and Balkman mostly). Keeping JR in check (not necessarily contained, but taking enough bad shots and not penetrating much) should be do-able, but I think the key to the series will be The Big Kiwi. If Marks can be tough inside, give Andersen enough to think about on offense and crash the glass, the series win is within reach. If he gets owned and can't spell Ty enough, we are cooked. Cooked I tells ya. Ely vs Andersen? Dear God...

This is probably the best case scenario for us. We can beat the nuggets as long as JR and Melo dont have any of those ridiculous games they can put. I actually thought Rasual looked pretty decent tonight, after his dunk he looked a lot more comfortable shooting. Peja couldnt do anything right, hopefully he can bounce back. As for the loss, i don't think to much about it. Ty didnt play the second half, we missed all those free throws, and then the lucky shot at the end. Id be confident if we made it to the second round and played the spurs.

I like the Denver matchup better than any of the other matchups for us:
Billups has ALWAYS been overrated. As Bill Simmons says, Billups jacks up a lot of ill advised big shots but Melo is much more clutch and hasn't said "hey, give me the damn ball, this is my team!" yet
K Mart might be able to bother West a little because he's a great defender and athletic beast
I think Nene and TC are pretty much even, with Nene better offensively and TC better defensively.
I think JR will try way to hard and end up taking a lot of bad 3's to show Byron up. And he won't end up with 45 points like he did earlier this week :P
I'd say coaching is pretty much even...both guys have great histories and both have been maligned by their fans, but at the end of the day they win
I think Birdman could give us HUGE problems off the bench. We're already a crappy rebounding team, our bench is even worse, and he's a rebound-stickback master. We probably need Tyson out there at all times when Andersen is out or else it could get really, really ugly. Unfortunately, that means Nene might have free reign against Marks or, even worse, Ely.
The second round might be great too. I think the guys want revenge on the Spurs for both last year and tonight. I do think the Mavs have a legit shot to take out the Spurs though. That series is going at least 6. I mean, Dallas is pretty much the same team that went to the finals a few years ago, just with Kidd instead of Harris and sans Diop, and that team owned the Spurs in the playoffs. Without Ginobili, I think these two teams could put up a madly entertaining series (well, as entertaining as the Spurs can be without Ginobili). Also, we haven't heard the last of Dirk Nowitzki.
But yeah, the Lakers having to play either Portland or Houston in the second round? NICE. If they play Portland, they are gonna be worn out chasing Portland's young guys everywhere and you know Nate McMillan is gonna take advantage of his team's youth, especially at pg where they will run circles around Derek Fisher. If they play Houston, Artest and Battier will probably make Kobe murderous with their pesky yet amazing defense. He'll either have to work super hard for everything or get in a crazy hot zone like in that game in which we beat them this year, where Butler played killer defense but Kobe just couldn't miss a thing in the third quarter. Even if we don't get that far, I hope someone takes down the Lakers. I'm sick of Laker fans. And I'm not even in California.
Question: How the HELL is Denver the second seed this year? They've had injuries to Carmelo and Nene and aren't even that great to begin with, yet they won more than the Rockets, Blazers, Jazz, and Spurs? How is this possible?

^ I dont think Billups is overrated, i think he's one of the better guards in the nba. Its not a coincedence that the pistons were constantly one of the best teams while he was with them, and now theyre suddenly an eigth seed without him, and that denver went from no playoffs to 2nd seed with him

i live in japan so never get to see games live - hence my friend was tracking the game throughout school on his ipod touch. the sad thing is, at the 7 second mark and SA trailing by 3, i knew that parker was going to drive, someone would help out on d, and parker would dish to michael finley for the shot and they'd win in overtime. i didn't call the parker part, but i called the rest. i hate the spurs...
anyway denver looks like a good matchup for us.
