All season long, there have been "big games". Games to lock up the playoffs. Games to determine seeding. Revenge games to get back at the Magic for their Christmas Day Massacre. I have tried to avoid calling regular season games big, but I know I haven't entirely succeeded.
Here's the thing, though: tonight's game is big. The biggest of the season. Tonight will tell us if the Hornets we are watching are the ones we saw the last month of the season - tired, uninspired and mediocre - or the ones we loved watching in December and January, all cylinders firing and looking sharp. I feel the Hornets have to have game 2. If they don't win, there is no way they are winning four of their next five games, and the series probably ends in Denver in game five. If they do take it, I think the Hornets have the advantage, and they may be playing until late May at the very least. That's the stakes.
Most people don't think the Hornets are up to it since the last game - lots of comments like "What will the Hornets do if Carmelo starts firing on all cylinders and JR Smith can knock down some three's too! Oh My!". "Chauncey Billups is the best Point Guard on the Planet!". "How can West contend with Kenyon Martin, the best defender since general Zhang Liao held off 200,000 Wu Soldiers with only 7,000 men of his own!" Etc., Etc.
Okay, while no one is actually comparing Martin to Zhang Liao(shame on them), the sentiment is there - and though that last game was bad, the reality is the difference between these teams isn't that big. West can handle Martin, and has a history of following terrible games with good ones. Last season he handled Tim Duncan just fine, and if you want to make the case that Kenyon Martin is a better defender than Timmy, more power to you. If you also want to make the case that Carmelo is suddenly going to explode as a shooter, and as a result the Nuggets are going to improve on their 50% shooting from the field and 52% shooting from downtown, knock yourself out. Hopefully the Nuggets are thinking the same way and will rely on that.
All the ingredients for a Hornets win are there - they just have to be put together. The Hornet's shooters are getting open, the Nuggets weren't able to stop Paul and West from getting those ten-fifteen foot jumpers they usually put down, and the second unit actually played the Nuggets even when they came in at the start of the second. It's also not that likely that Kleiza and Andersen are going to combine for 12 free throw attempts off the bench. They can win this game, and three others like it.
Now, you might ask, do I think the Hornets will successfully meld all those ingredients and win tonight?
. . .
I prefer not to answer that question.

The Hornets have proven that they can play with anyone when motivated, healthy, and agressive. While not 100% healthy, we are close enough. We sure ought to be motivated after the trashing we took last game and the upsets by Dallas, Chicago, and Philly. The agressiveness is what we have shown less of than we did last year.
We need to set the tone on defense and on the boards. We need to make sure that any fouls are effective at stopping an easy score, not a gift of free throws for a touch on the elbow.
We need to drive to the hoop, finish, draw fouls, and make free throws. Get the refs' minds right from the start of the game. We need to keep our cool when they try to draw Paul, West, Chandler, and Posey into technical fouls.
And finally, we need some shooters to make their makeable open shots. 37% won't beat Minnesota, let alone Denver. We tend to make more in transition, which requires boards, defense, and agression.
Can we? You betcha! Will we? Hope springs eternal!

The Blazers got butchered in game 1 and came back to win game 2. It's not entirely out of the question. Chad Ford said he expects a sweep. Gotta love analysts. How do these people get jobs exactly?

Indeed, Engineer, Hope is always there. Sometimes, it's why I watch the games.
And yeah, that's a beautiful banner by Dariusz. We need to keep the playoff run alive just so we can keep getting cool graphics from him.

Hi! New reader, 1st time commenter.
Mad props for the Zhang Liao reference! hi-larious.
Let's hope the nuggets bring/maintain their unwarranted, cocky attitude...
they're a good team, but the swaggering display on Sunday was off-putting.

I don't think tonight is a "must win" as much as it is a "must play well".
It's easy to overreact to the NBA playoffs, but you are not in deep trouble until you lose a home game.
2 series to keep in mind are Heat v. Hornets in 2004 (7 games, home team winning every game) and Spurs v. Hornets in 2007 (7 games, home team wins out until last game).
New Orleanians will overreact if/when we lose tonight. The arena will not be packed on Saturday, etc. The majority of Hornets fans will essentially throw in the towel. I don't think there's any reason to do that IF the Hornets show fight, play well, and emerge without any injuries.

The only "must win" games for the Hornets are Games 3,4,6, and 7
Games 2 and 5 would be nice, but they're not "must wins".

I disagree. I don't think the Hornets can win 4 of 5. But that's just me.
Thanks, Staar. I try to throw in obscure references to keep things fresh.

I was chatting with JR smith on a live broadcast via his twitter last night around 1:30am and I asked him how many games he thought this series was going to go...needlesstosay he said 4, that's all it's going to take.
We need this one. lets go.

Staar, welcome to the family. I also found the gesturing on the part of most of the Nuggets players to be a little off-putting as well. Funny how the only one not celebrating was Billups... the only real Champion on that roster. He understands that it was just one game, and you've got to win four before your opponent does. I have mucho respect for that dude.
Tonight's game will be about tempo and ferocity. In game one, the Nuggets dictated the tempo on both sides of the floor. Denver did not have a quarterly score under 26 points. That is entirely too many, and too fast a pace for the Hornets. Let's hope that Byron and the boys found something on film that they can exploit, and come out and attack. I think the Hornets had a few opportunities to run in that 1st game, but didn't take advantage of it. Also, and this is something the Hornets haven't done very well all season, but they appeared to have some opportunities to attack the basket early in the shot clock. They should try to take advantage of that too. That should set an offensive tone, and generate some early fouls on Denver's bigs. I'm actually not overly concerned with the rebounding differential. The Hornets missed alot of shots in that first game, which led to Denver out-rebounding N.O. by 12 on the defensive glass.
I look for Carmelo Anthony to be much more aggressive in this game. If that happens, things could get dicey for the Hornets defense. I thought Melo showed alot of savvy in deferring to Billups while he went supernova in the first game. This also may be one of those video game nights for Chris Paul... I cannot wait.
Once again, the magic number is 25. The Hornets must have two players hit the 25 point mark, and must attempt a minimum of 25 legitimate (non-garbage time) free throws. Neither of these things happened in the 1st game.

Chris Paul is sorta un-Chris Paul-like against the Nuggets. These are CP's averages against the Nuggets this season, including Sunday's game 1 loss. Look at the turnover stats.
Points: 20.8
Assists: 11.0
Steals: 2.8
Turnovers: 5.0
So Chris gets around his season averages, not a big shocker, but at a much higher turnover cost. Paul's 08-09 season turnover average is 2.96, which is up almost a half a turnover a game from his career average (2.59). But against the Nuggets, he's averaging more than two turnovers more per game. Thats a pretty big jump.

Hey, Deron Williams played well last night, but I know he had 7 turnovers during the fourth quarter. Sooo.... Chris Paul is better :)

I'm with YoungFella on this one. We need to at least play well. We have to in order to make ourselves believe that we can beat this team. Not only that but we have to win on the road at some point and I'd prefer to do it now when we have very little pressure instead of an actual "win or go home" Game 7 on the road.
