So the 2009 NBA Draft goes down this Thursday, June 25, in NYC.
This past week, Ryan has been busy figuring out what kind of player the Hornets should draft with the 21st pick. The conclusion has been that the available bigs leave a lot to be desired (unless DeJuan Blair slips through somehow), there are some intriguing wings we could snag, while our best potential prospect will likely be a ballhandler.
Now it's time to scour the mock drafts and see who the Hornets are projected to pick. I'll run through the top five most popular picks here. You can see the full list of mocks this list was compiled from at the bottom of the post.
1. Eric Maynor | 6-3 PG from VCU
Five of the 30 mocks drafts I reviewed have us taking Maynor with the 21st pick, but most expect him to go in the early- to mid-teens. He's a senior so he's probably more NBA-ready than some other prospects, but he didn't play in a major conference and there are concerns about his size/strength. The bright side is that he's a well-rounded player with a knack for getting in the lane and finishing with a variety of layups, floaters and scoops. Que highlight video with cheesy soundtrack (best stuff after the 2-minute mark):
2. Marcus Thornton | 6-4 SG from LSU
The local kid. As with Maynor, five of the 30 mock drafts I found expect the Hornets to pick Thornton, but he's listed second here because the other 25 mocks all have him going later. Ryan found him to be the best wing prospect available at or around pick 21, noting that he has potential as a second unit volume scorer. But do the Hornets really need more depth on the wing?
Two highlight videos for Thornton:
3. Chase Budinger | 6-7 G/F from Arizona
Budinger is all over the mock drafts, some expecting him to be drafted in the mid-teens, while others see him falling to the second round. He seems to have all the tools to succeed at the NBA level, but there are question marks about his work ethic, toughness and focus.
Best videos I could find of Budinger:
4. Jeff Teague | 6-2 G from Wake Forest
Three of the 30 mocks have us taking Teague. Ryan found him to be the second-best guard prospect available in that range, with Ty Lawson first (two mocks have us picking Lawson, and about 2/3 of them expect Lawson to be picked ahead of Teague). Teague sounds like a Jannero Pargo type, in that he can push the tempo and score in a variety of ways, but running a set offense is not his strength.
Teague highlight mix:
5. Terrence Williams | 6-6 G/F from Louisville
Ryan was excited by everything about this guy, except for his scoring. Combine his poor offense with the fact that he's a wing player, and the Hornets wouldn't be filling a need if they picked him. He's a great athlete and he does all the little things, but he wouldn't make sense in New Orleans.

i think if we the hornets are 100% going to be resigning pargo there isnt really much chance of them drafting maynor or other point guards, with teague i really dont count him a point but more of a combo guard so he would still be a possibility, but id be overall very happy if we drafted any of these guys

Oh and about thornton and being too deep at the wing, i think we have a problem at the 2 spot, butler is a good starter, but after that it gets confusing. For some reason Scott wont play Mo and insists with Brown and i think if we drafted Thornton he would be taking Browns backup 2 spot so there isnt much worry there

i agree with joe, i really think there going to be resigning pargo. so i think we should definitely go with thornton...because thornton would be a great backup and i wouldnt doubt throughout the season he'll end up being are starting 2 guard...and i think if they go with any 2 guard, there definitely going to be resigning pargo

Pargo is key. Like you say, Joe, if the Hornets can resign him, it's redundant picking up a similar player in the draft, unless we're trying to get the best available talent to package in a trade later.

If we go for a guard, I'm sold on Thornton. Hopefully he can be out Jet Terry coming off the bench. I'd be nice to have a second unit (possibly) of Pargo, Thornton, Wright, Posey/Marks, and Armstrong. That'd be a good perimeter offensively and all the bigs would need to do is defend and rebound.

Unfortunately, the problem last year was that none of our bench bigs COULD defend or rebound. To save their lives. I say pray DeJuan Blair falls

I don't see a Pargo miracle happening before Thursday, and you cannot base a draft on who you might sign. If Thornton is available, take him.
Last offseason, Pargo thought he was worth more than the market was willing to shell out for him, and consequently booked it for Europe. It wasn't exactly Bower's fault that Pargo did not come back. The NBA market dictated he wasn't worth what he was asking, and Bower was not going to go outside market price to re-sign him. I didn't exaclty see execs from the other NBA teams lining up at Pargo's door for his services. In truth, I think Pargo will find this season to be very similar. There is just not going to be a huge buzz, other than here in New Orleans, about the prospect of getting a Jannero Pargo. That is not likely to help his chances in getting what he considers top dollar.

Indian, i'm totally with you... I just think the idea of Blair falling to 21 is a pipe dream.

@Mikey: I think he will be a bit more willing to take a pay cut, especially after playing in europe where sometimes they dont even pay them

@alltheway: Agreed pass on Budinger take Thorton.
Although after watching the T Will video I feel inspired. Starts off with some words of encouragment, slow motion highlight action and that power ballad accompanying the video...he's my new number 2 behind Thorton on that "straight outta Disney movie" video alone.

"He can post up, as well." (Byron Scott talking about Marcus Thornton)
I think this pretty much seals the deal that were drafting him, Scott obviously wants another non-big to go to in the post a bunch of times to try and take advantage of inexistent matchup problems
Oh and on the topic of Budinger i really hope this guy doesnt get picked by us, when he was interviewed he said he could help this team by standing ready to catch and shoot out on the wing, excuse me if i dont want a stand around player. Also he cant play much defence

"Scott obviously wants another non-big to go to in the post a bunch of times to try and take advantage of inexistent matchup problems"
Haha, funny. Still, I very much like the Thorton pick if my two favorites aren't available.
Those being.. Dejuan Blair or Ty Lawson. I'm not sure who I'd like more. Blair fills more of a Hornets need, and would really help out the frontcourt depth. A "garbage man" type is exactly what the Hornets need. But Lawson has the potential to become a star. He won't be a star on this team since he's a point guard, but he could potentially be the best backup PG in the league for a few seasons before he gets a starting gig somewhere else. If he becomes the player I think he'll be he could be great trade value somewhere down the line...
Of course, despite what some mock drafts say... its unlikely either of these guys is available at 21.
So I do like the Thorton pick. The Hornets don't have a true shooting guard, and maybe Thorton can be that. At the least I do think Thorton can be a solid bench scorer. He can atleast equal what Pargo gave us.
If its not Blair, Lawson or Thorton.... I have no problems with the Teague or Maynor picks.

Whatever the case may be, the Hornets better do... SOMETHING. Because the Spurs just traded away one of the air pumps they use to inflate their basketballs and a book of coupons for bar-be-que to the Bucks for Richard Jefferson (20 ppg, 5 rebounds). And Dallas and Houston are gonna be good too.

especially since he misses the first 20-30 games of the season, not to mention a countless number of them most likely with other injuries as the season goes on
