Tonight, the Hornets drafted Darren Collison out of UCLA and traded 2 future second round picks to Miami for Marcus Thornton of LSU.
That's a haul I can respect. Of the players available when we picked, we essentially got my second and fourth choices, with DeJuan Blair slipping fairly deep into the second round with his bad knees(to the Spurs, ouch) and Sam Young sliding inexplicably even further.[Edit: Wups, right before. Doh.]
Once our haul was set, I began to think about where the Hornets were going to fit the new players into the rotation . . . and something interesting began to percolate in my mind.
Collison will clearly be groomed as the new backup point guard - with the obvious hope he can replace Daniels in the backcourt while adding athleticism and better deep shooting. Marcus Thornton was acquired to eventually replace Rasual Butler in the near future as the Hornet's shooting guard.
The most important part of that, however, is financial. The guys Collison and Butler could replace; Daniels and Butler, also happen to have expiring contracts. Should the Hornets find other homes for them, taking advantage of their expiring contracts to move them to teams in return for cap space or draft picks(or send Butler to Miami for their 4Mil trade exception) then suddenly the Hornets have almost entirely solved thier Luxury Tax issues.
That's all speculation of course. But it is interesting speculation, is it not?
Oh, and like many of you have mentioned in the comments - Pargo may be the big loser this draft. He's suddenly seeming rather redundant.

Agree with it all, except that Young was taken right before Blair, not after :P
I don't think we're done trading. Next week should be fun

Hmm. That's nice in theory, Ryan, but I don't think we should get our hopes up for Marcus Thornton developing into a starter. As you noted in your Value of a Draft Pick post (linked below), a player drafted that low (43rd pick) has about a 12% chance of becoming a sixth man or better. Not great odds.
I'm kind of in agreement about Blair since so many teams passed on him, but it worries me that he ended up with a division rival. As someone with great hair noted at the Alario Center tonight, the Spurs didn't have a first round pick but came away with Blair, and the Nuggets also didn't have a first round pick but came away with Ty Lawson. Those are playoff teams in our conference that managed to pull a rabbit out of a hat on draft day.
Not that the Hornets did badly, but I'm still a little underwhelmed by this draft. My own fault though because I was fully expecting something big to happen involving Tyson Chandler. That said, I'm kinda glad the rumored Suns deal didn't go down. It sounds like we were deep in talks with Phoenix to swap TC and our 21st pick for Ben Wallace and the 14th pick (which ended up being Earl Clark).

Big Men: Ronny Turiaf, the warriors are willing to trade anything (except anthony randolph) and id think we would be able to get him quite easily without having to give anything major, this guys does so many things that our bench sorely needs

Difference between Thornton from what has been seen so far and most of our bench.
He actually shows desire to PLAY for the Hornets and in the NBA lol...

Congratulate the new hornets to the hive: Collison and Thornton (if we decide to pick up his contract)!
Unfortunately now begins the scrupulous judgment on performance over sentiment. Such is sports. Better not do us dirty Armstrong-Simmons style.

Niall: what are the chances Benny Wallace actually follows through with retirement? Would that mean we pay the rest of his salary?
Plus he's not really all that good if he does play anymore. It'd be another salary dump hidden by idiotic PR statements of "we receive players we have been targeting for years!"

Can't believe all the doubters after the Collison pick. Is he a savior? No.
Was Blair really going to make the Hornets a title team next year? No.
Was anyone at 21 going to put this team over the top? No.
Bottom line we needed front line depth, but also another ball handler. Hopefully Collison can play 10-12 minutes and not have the 2nd unit be an absolute train wreck. Also, I like the idea of having 2 guys for just as much money as one (Pargo). Hopefully we've got some other moves coming-Peja please- and everyone can get healthy.

I don't think Pargo would have been worth paying for, i mean no one in the league was willing to pay him last season, us included. He didn't exactly increase his stocks in Europe and his not worth the salary he is trying to command.
Like it has been said above for the price of Pargo we effectively get 2 players who are younger and have a greater potential upside.
No one is expecting them to be great players, but if they can provide anything close to a Courtney Lee sort of season, i think the Hornets have some good building blocks. Both these guys can shoot the 3 play some D, and from what their scouting reports say, can handle the ball and create their own shot.

I like Turiaf a lot too, but doesn't he have an insanely huge contract?

CBS Sports gave our pick an A. I was one of the first ready to jump out of a window after our pick but once my roommates talked me off the ledge it makes sense. Collison will contribute right away, he'll stay with the same fast pace of CP3 and our back court will have a strong D. Sucks about Pargo but on the other hand I'm glad to see we didn't just trade Daniels for a 2nd round pick like reported earlier. Now we got some trade bait & I hope we make a BIG move in the next couple weeks cause the best teams in the league last season made some trades and have now gotten better. (Cavs, Spurs, Magic)

So close to getting Jeff Teague, yet so far. He will fit Atlanta's junkyard ballin' with his athleticism.
That's definitely too bad the Nuggets got Ty Lawson for a song. It will be interesting to see how all these pt guards in the '09 class deal with CP3... from Ricky Rubio on down the draft board, you know these kids have Chris Paul as their "Most Wanted" enemy!
On the other hand, Collison is accomplished and used to playing under pressure. He can keep doing the exploring in the lane that CP does, once he learns some of the master's tricks. I think we needed another ballhandler every bit as much as we need a solid PF; however, if it were me I might've taken Sam Young instead, but I got no beef with the UCLA guard.
Getting Thornton for a song strikes me as a real good deal. Let's hope this LSU product is able to stick around and play enough D to satisfy Coach Scott. We know he has the trigger to get his shot in the NBA; now let's see if his gym rat ethics take him to the next level faster and with these Hornets.
If the Hornets do make some moves with Butler & Daniels, it still would not surprise me to see Pargo rejoin the team, but clearly our biggest need now is capable bigs who can give DX and Tyson some quality rest.

@saveyourbo: Turiaf is only paid around 4 mil, trading daniels and armstrong could easily get us turiaf

One more thing: potential bench= pg-Collison sg-Thornton sf-JuJu pf-Posey c-whomever we can get. Of course its way early, but that could be a great defensive unit (albeit a small one).

@winze: please don't use the phrase "greater upside potential." It's such a random cliche that doesn't actually mean anything. Just makes me think of how much I hate the ESPN broadcast crew for the draft lol
Anyway, if Ben Wallace follows through with the retirement, he will agree to a nice buyout, which is why he is such a good chip. I think we could probably do a trade with GS because if they trade Curry, they still need a pg.

what the hornets should have done is drafted dejuan blair out of pitsbrugh and still got thorne to like they did and he should be the starter at sooting guard but what they should do now is trade tyson chandler for varjueo from the cavs are BIG Z and if you can do that then sign brandon bass are chris bosh if you have enough cash to sign bosh but bryon scott better not mess up again we gave him a one year deal again which was smart because whos out there right now but if he dosent take us to the champonship this year then fire him
