During summer league, Chris Paul gave an interview to Chris Tomasson of ProBasketballNews.com.
During the conversation, Paul gave a few lines that has generated three stories and counting. The quote:
"In this league, anything can happen," said Paul, at the summer league to watch his Hornets. "I can be dealt."
Paul then was asked that surely he can't be serious he could be traded.
"It's possible," he said. "It's possible."
In response to him saying that, we get article titles of:
- Paul says trade 'possible'(ProBasketballNews)
- New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul says anyone on the team could be traded, including him (Nola.com)
- Paul concedes he could be traded(ESPN.Com's Rumor article title)
That's what I've seen so far. I'm sure others will crop up. I understand the desire to generate catching headlines, but look at the quote. 99% of the players in the league would say that. All of them are aware that it's all a business, and it would take an Ego of someone like, say, LeBron James to say anything else. Paul's got an ego, but he's he's also always been a realist. He's not about to dismiss the chance he could be traded out of hand.
Nola.com so far has the best take on this "Story". They actually bothered to get quotes from the Hornets, where the "potential trade" was roundly denied by a seemingly annoyed Hugh Weber and Jeff Bower. Bower's response was directly in line with my first take on the quotes:
"I think what Chris said just shows his selflessness that he's not different than anyone else on the team."
Of course, Nola.com couldn't resist the allure of this headline either, starting off their article with:
While watching the Hornets' summer league team play Thursday night in Las Vegas, Chris Paul told a reporter there's chance he soon could be traded.
That's not really what he said, was it? Going from "it's possible" to "chance he soon could be traded" is rather . . . lame.
That's the kind of crap I can't abide. Does anyone enjoy being manipulated like that? Anyone?
And what's most annoying about those headlines is the ProBasketball News interview has some actual lines in it that could be important to Hornets fans. Paul talks about how he hopes no one is traded, and that he and James Posey talk about working with what they'll have, betraying a little worry on Paul's part. Those kinds of quotes are the ones that interest me. Those are the ones I want follow-up on:
What are Paul's feeling about the lack of movement and possible loss of Chandler for little in return? Is he frustrated? Could a step backward, or even lack of improvement by the team make impact his willingness to sign a new extension?
Those things can impact the team, the personnel, and the Front Office. Not Paul saying it's possible he could be traded.
Okay. Rant over. Now please, go take our snazzy survey and maybe win yourself an even more snazzy jersey. The more feedback, the better!

I feel a little better after your rant. I'm glad the TP posted the Weber and Bower comments, but still not happy they contributed to this garbage or with their Hornets coverage in general. OK I'm happy the Hornets actually get local coverage now as opposed to a few years ago, but I wish the TP would hire someone with actual basketball/NBA knowledge to do the writing. I can always find meaningful Hornets articles around the web (mostly here), but it kills me to see that the main news source for a casual local fan would be the trash up on nola.com. Granted, not all of it is bad, but ignorant reporting leads to ignorant fans (which annoy me more than the articles even though it's not entirely their fault).

"....99% of the players in the league would say that."
So true. But for these clowns CP saying it must mean he wants out. Such A** clowns.
TP's Jimmy Smith seems to be the best Hornets beat writer. Not saying he's great but I consider him better than John Reid and certainly better than John DeShazier.

Forums across the country act as though they haven't even seen that part of the "story". Looked right over it. Some a**clowns are even starting threads titled "Free Chris Paul" and have included ESPN's trade machine in the threads. LOL! These people, I tell ya. We really have a superstar on our hands ladies and gentlemen. One that people cannot stand to see in New Orleans.

This is an article I have hoped I'd never read.
Also, did anyone else find the Hornets article in the TP by DeShazier completely unresearched and uncalled for? It pissed me off enough to actually want to e-mail him about it. He barely mentions how much cap room the Hornets don't have and the luxury tax. He acts like all these teams are upgrading in the West when the only one I see a notable improvment on is San Antonio. He doesn't talk about how the Hornets said they were NOT going to trade Chandler and that in order to sign the people he talks about Chandler would most likely have to be dealt without getting any quality in return. It's obnoxious and I refuse to read another one of his moronic articles.

DeShazier is probably the worst choice for a hornets only column, I remember reading before the nuggets series he predicted that we would lose and lose badly and went on and on about how much better the nuggets were, i swear i thought he was a nuggets writer. It gets even worse when you read the comments about his articles over at nola.com alot of people agree with him and its annoying to have such stupid so-called "fans" posting that kind of stuff, i barely can stand going over to that website anymore

@joe. I don't blame you. It's terrible. I don't guess it was all that hard to predict a loss to the Nuggets seeing as how the Hornets basically limped into the playoffs. He seems to be a hater that lives vicariously through the athletes. LOL! He wanted to become a baller but all he ended up with was this stinky beat writing job. LOL!!

Glad you posted this. I made fun of it on Twitter this AM, and would have done a post breaking down the lies (strong word? Maybe. But using manipulative headlines to entice readers to a not-very-exciting quote that tons of players would say is not honest), except I'd just done one yesterday. You said everything I wanted to say anyway. Haha.
P.S. DeShazier is terrible. I will not understand people who defend him or like to read him. QueenBee is right-- either he's a failed athlete or he got beat up by jocks as a kid. He's so negative about sports! And if you've read any of his stuff making fun of the Saints, you know it's not just the Hornets. I wish they'd hire people who enjoyed/cared to educate themselves about the game.

i also find it funny that while we talk about DeShazier being such a negative writer for his sports teams, he comes out with an article that basically shoots down Julian Wright. I really thought that a teams beat writer actually liked their teams and wanted them to succeed

I saw this on Hoopshype and the first thing I thought was "I wonder how people are going to spin this to propose 500 trades to the Mavs and Pistons"
Anyway, CP won't get traded. Simple as that *knocks on wood.* I feel bad that his words are getting twisted around, but at the end of the day, he's making $16 mil a year and is one of the most famous athletes in the world. So I don't feel too bad for him lol

Right on, Ryan.
I find value in many of DeShazier's articles, but I agree that he can be sensationalistic a lot of the time. But that's what grabs people's attention and that's what gets people talking, so I guess it's effective if that's the priority. Personally though, I'd much rather read the real story instead of the manufactured hype.

It's a slow part of the season so why not run with a quote? It's like those TV shows that say something like "Timberwolves sign Jordan" and it turns out to be Reggie Jordan. It gets people talking and that's about it. I don't think we needed an article to tell us that Paul isn't getting traded.

DeShazier sucks. Anyway, here's a quote from CP's twitter....
"Jus for the record too...I'M NOT GOIN ANYWHERE!!! No clue what Chris Thomasson was talkin about, but I didn't say any of what he was sayin"

CP knows this is a business and he's stating facts. I salute his statement (he never implied HE wanted to walk), since he's looking out for number one (and if I know CP like I think we do, number two and three and four...). But he is our franchise player so trading CP or even indulging in rumours is almost a surefire guarantee of franchise implosion.
Like BronBron, I wouldn't blame him if he left from frustration with a management that doesn't seem to know how to properly supplement his talents, or fit CP into a system (probably the former). Unlike BronBron, however, I think CP's dignified and won't give up.

I'm a little bored this morning so I'm gonna make up some headlines myself.
Actual excerpt #1:
"We're not the best road team in NBA for no reason," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant told reporters after his team had lost to the Nuggets for the first time in their last 12 playoff meetings.

Actual excerpt #2:
At the conclusion of the Warriors/Hornets game, a crowd of kids gathers to try and get an autograph from Morrow. Morrow finishes with media and throws his jersey into the throng of kids, only to have them lunge at it and break the security barricade fighting for it. A younger fan desperately clutches the jersey while another fan struggles to rip it away from him.

Actual excerpt #3:
Miami, Fla., sports consultant Rick Horrow, who played a critical role as a promoter with the original MAPS program, isn’t surprised by the lack of news regarding a naming rights deal for Ford Center. The market, he says, has stalled. "I can’t really put my hands on any large deals," Horrow said. "It’s not fair to say the market has dried up. But some of the bigger searches are being postponed."

Niall: Awesome.
A guy from Fanhouse actually tweeted last night with a link to his post "Is Chris Paul a Liar or Just a Jerk?" Seriously. No lie. Words cannot describe how angry I was at someone obviously trolling for traffic through really low means.
