It's on NOLA.com and NewOrleans.com, and all over Twitter: The Hornets have traded Rasual Butler to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for "a future conditional second round draft choice."
(No word on what those conditions are just yet.)
There were rumors that the Hornets were not done dealing this summer, and I guess the loss of Rasual -- the only Hornet to play in all 82 games last season -- is the price we have to pay for not dumping huge chunks of salary in the Okafor deal.
It looks like Rasual's departure will save us a good chunk of change. From NewOrleans.com:
Butler is in the final year of his deal and scheduled to make $3.94 million. The deal provides relief to a team facing the luxury tax for next season. New Orleans was nearly 8 million over the luxury threshold ($69.92 million) before unloading a regular starter from last year's lineup.
So in essence this deal saves George Shinn about $8 million (Rasual's contract plus the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax penalty). Nothing to be sneezed at.
But how will this move affect the team's performance on-court?
Rasual moved into the starting lineup early last season when Morris Peterson was having injury problems, and he played so well that Byron never put Butler back on the bench. His numbers weren't outstanding (11.2ppg, 3.3 rpg in 32mpg), but his shooting ability helped spread the floor and more often than not he could handle his business defensively against some of the League's elite wings (remember his performance against LeBron James last November?). And judging by his Twitter updates the last few months, Rasual had been hitting the gym hard to improve on his best season as a pro.
So yes, Rasual was a nice player to have on your roster, and it worries me that we'll now be relying on Mo Pete or Julian Wright to soak up most of the minutes at 2-guard. But let's be real here: we weren't winning a championship with Rasual Butler starting alongside Chris Paul in the backcourt. Shooting guard was the weakest spot on the roster yesterday, and now it's just that bit weaker.
Best case scenario: We've saved some significant dollars and the deal opens up some playing time that JuJu and Marcus Thornton can put to good use.
Worst case scenario: Peja gets hurt again this season, we're left with no outside shooting threat and Devin Brown ends up starting.
Leaving you with some good memories:

I expected Butler and Antonio Daniels to go. And maybe Hilton as well. It's still a little sad.

Great point made by a poster over at Hornets Report:
"I just see this as a business as much as a sport and business wise if they dont do this trade they are saying Butler is worth 8 million dollars this year. If Butler was a FA, would we pay him close to 8 million? No way."

I kinda feel like the starting 2 guard spot is wide open now. I know Byron doesn't usually play the rookies significant minutes, but he obviously has lost any faith he had in Mo Pete. Maybe Mo will have a Phoenix-like year this year, or maybe Juju gets that spot and we stick with Peja at the 3(probably not enough ball-handling with that line-up). I saw this one coming as Sual's stock had to be higher than ever and he'd be easiest to move, but it still leaves a big question mark in the rotation. I think I'll be happy as long as Devin Brown is absolutely no part of the answer.

Peterson could very well have a Butler-like resurrection this year, you never know. And, Niall, I went to probably 20 of Thornton's games at LSU the past few years, and I can assure you he is a three-point threat. Especially his senior year, I kept thinking "That guy could be the new Peja of the Hornets" and salivating. Call me a homer if you will.

I also saw this coming but a little bit different I thought we'd package a deal with Butler/Daniels/Armstrong.
Jeff Bower: “Today’s move allows us to increase our financial flexibility while at the same time gives us an opportunity to improve at that position.”
What is our financial situation now? Do we have room to make a move at the 2 or is he referring to our current bench getting minutes?

Yeah, I had a package of Sual's, Brown's, and Daniels' expiring contracts to the Hawks for Jamal Crawford worked out on ESPN trade machine. Oh well. Mo Pete ain't that bad but we're definitely not winning a championship with him starting at the 2 either. If nothing else, between Sual leaving and Peja aging, JuJu should have plenty of room to shine.

We're still well over the cap at about 73 million in salary. To get under the tax line, we'll have to shed Antonio Daniels as well.
Over the past week Bower has re-iterated that George Shinn has authorized them to spend over the tax, but he hasn't said how much. So this could get us to the number he was supposed to reach - which means he hopes Peterson, Wright, or Thornton give us good minutes at the two - or he could be considering bringing in someone else at the two.
There really aren't, however, many players left worthy of a starting role as a shooting guard. At least none I'd rather have around more than seeing what Wright or Thornton can do.
Oh - and despite what a lot of people say, Peja Stojakovic at the 2 isn't some terrible disaster. Guarding a wing player is guarding a wing player. I could dig a Okafor/West/Wright/Stojakovic/Paul line up, with Posey coming in for Wright for half the game to stretch the floor.

I'm thinking Peterson starts, with Juju and Thornton getting the minutes off the bench, with Devin Brown handing out gatorade. That's my hope, anyway

Also, why did the Clippers do this? Won't this just take minutes away from Gordon and Thornton, both of whom are younger and better? It's not like they cleared any cap space with this trade either

I think Peja starts at the 2, Wright starts at 3, and Posey plays for Wright in crunch time. Peterson assists with the Gatorade.

Ryan, isn't the traditional shooting guard position in flux right now, and most teams use that position and small forward interchangeably? Or is my thinking just warped by the Hornets?

It really does depend on the system. In the Princeton offense, the only real difference between Shooting Guard and Small Forward is that the small forward is sometimes designated to crash the boards offensively, while the shooting guard is supposed to get back on defense after a shot.

I like Sual and was proud of the year he had... but... I don't see why some people are really upset about this. Of course it's about money. You basically had two guys who've started at the same position in the last 2 years, who are about the same age, who are about the same talent level. One of them was going to go. In this economy, is it a surprise it's the one with the smaller (yet still significant because of the luxury tax) contract? It wasn't even fair to both of those guys to be in that situation going into this year. People always see what they're closest to. A year ago, everyone wanted to dump Butler.
Bottom line, he did a great job for us and was an ironman last year, but he's replaceable with what's already on the roster.

its just sad to see a guy that was involved the team alot, all of those camps and stuff, and hearing alot of positive stuff about his training regimen. He was one of the highlights of last year and just hope him the best

And ticktock, I hear if we get under the luxury tax they'll be able to give away more than two beers per person at Buzz Fest next season. Every cloud...

So, the Hornets save around $1 million in the Okafor deal, then make this move to save another $4 million. Add the Luxury tax to that, and he Hornets saved themselves $10 million this offseason, and haven't had to take significant steps backwards. For that alone you have to appreciate Bower a little bit. Keep in mind that the Hornets still (at this point) have the same starting rotation from their best season ever. Not a bad job, Jeffrey.

I really hope Peterson is born again and gets the starting 2 job. I've been a big fan of his since his Toronto days, and I just want the best for him and our team.
Free Mo Pete & Lock up Devin Brown! (Sorry D)

the second round pick is in 2016.
I find that both interesting and entertaining.

2016? That's strange. We shoulda asked for a washing machine, or maybe $50 bucks and a case of heineken. I'm betting the conditions of "conditional" mean we never see that pick.

Rubu was definitely the feel-good story of last season; I liken my playing style to him (far, far worse of course) so I'll miss watching him consistently. Only wish we could've gotten a first rounder out of him, since I feel he's worth it. And those two memories? Man.
Good luck Rubu, but hope your squad keeps bombing, since the Clips are still in the Western Conference, heh.

After making a name for himself this year, he must feel kind of bad about being traded for a 2016 second round pick don't you think?

I'm sure he feels a sting, but no doubt he realises that he (and AD) was over a barrel to be traded. Being a small market team with what was the biggest payroll in the league, he's switched on enough to know that no salary would be get taken back if he was to go.
Maybe he'll take it as a compliment that a team wanted his services more than they wanted Daniels', even though AD's expiring is bigger...no doubt they were both being shopped. A backhanded compliment, sure, but its something.
