Back when Bruce Bowen retired, Timothy Varner of the Spurs Blog 48 Minutes of Hell sent me a message:
"With Bowen retiring, does that make Chris Paul the dirtiest player in the league? Discuss."
My first response was "yes", but after a few moments of reflection, I'm not sure I'd go that far. Yes, Paul can get after people - as we've seen many times. However, I still feel there's a qualifier to Paul's aggressiveness that keeps him from being simply 'dirty': he only gets nasty with people who get really physical with him. Then, of course, Paul's elbows fly. Forearms end up in places they shouldn't, and people scream bloody murder. But hey, those guys deserved it, right?
So no, I wouldn't call Paul the dirtiest player out there. He's a qualified dirty. Maybe we should call him smudged? Muddy? Somewhat Unclean?
I did have to admit one thing to Tim Varner, however: Once Ginobili retires, I'm not going to have any defense when he asks me if Paul is now the biggest flopper in the league. I don't think I've ever seen a player perform so many somersaults after driving to the basket. He must be wanting to become an actor - as detailed in this fake interview I did with him last season. Remember that? That was awesome.
I also wanted to call attention to this quote in today's AP article from Brian Mahoney about Paul:
"No, no," Paul said Monday. "I don't worry about replacement referees. End of the day, you're reffing the game."
I'm sorry, this just tickles my funny bone. Paul works the refs like a speed bag. There isn't a break in the action where the cameras don't spot him talking to the refs, or standing with Byron . . . and talking to the refs. Hell, just a few nights ago I watched one of last year's Mavs-Hornets games and Paul was barking at one of the refs to call a "T" on Jason Terry for hanging on the rim, and Paul got his "T". Unfortunately, it was Paul who was assessed the foul, but hey, he was trying.
Now, yes, I understand Paul probably means that it's the players actions on the court that determine what the refs can or can't call, but you still have to wonder if the way he works the refs impacts the game at all. Maybe that's a question Niall can hit Paul or Byron with during the Hornet's Media Day . . . or maybe he can ask Fluffy if shouting "And 1" has ever gotten him a free throw.

Dahntay Jones in a walk. The man makes plays that put people's livelihood in danger. No one ever had to retire from basketball for getting punched in the nads. Jones pulled moves, especially on Kobe that could have ended his career.

This is the first time I've heard Chris Paul and dirty in the same sentence. Here are couple that come to mind: kobe when he's being guarded tight (artest would have agreed) and jones. More importantly let's not confuse hard play with being dirty- this isn't kiddie ball. Anyways the 80's ballers were a bit dirtier than todays athletes. Biggest flopper by far is Ginobili and he is prob the only one I would give that title to. Paul is a good actor tho

I'm gonna put Andy Varejao ahead of Paul too, but only slightly. My reasoning is this; when you're "6'0" and get bumped by someone way bigger than you, sometimes you have a tendency to get knocked on your keester. But when you're 6'11 and 260+, someone like Earl Boykins shouldn't send you into the 2nd row behind the baseline. C'mon Andy!

Really? Cause I'm with Thudso3. I don't equate "flopper" with "dirty" AT ALL. Dirty is the guys who intentionally elbow and end up doing things that could potentially injure another player. Flopping never hurt anyone but the flopper (physically). Bruce Bowen freakin intentionally karate kicked someone-- actually, at least two people, famously-- in midair.

I should add that I know everyone throws elbows. I guess I'm saying there's a difference between "jostling for position against guys bigger than you" and "to the face on purpose".

In my opinion, dirty is when you purposely set out to hurt someone. Like sticking your foot under a jump shooter or trying to clothes line them. Although I might not venture out to call him dirty I do think it was a "dirty" play when Robert Horry went for D-West's already injured back. I'm with Mikey in that as long as Anderson Varejao is in the league, no, CP should not be considered the biggest flopper. ticktock6 is right. Bowen karate kicked a player, and once kicked Ray Allen in his back (after the play ended and they were still on the ground). Those people at those Spurs forums absolutely love to talk sh*t about Paul. I guess he gets under their skins.

Another thing about the refs. Refs actually talk to players too. I've seen refs go to players to say something. The players don't ALWAYS go to the refs. Also, I've seen Carlos Boozer and Amare Stoudemire yell AND 1! So it's not just Fluffy that does this. Not saying it's right but he's certainly not the only player that does this. This is the advantage of having league pass. To get to see a lot of other players' tendencies.

Don't forget CP3 on Jimmy Fallon tonight!

Actor Seth Meyers also on Fallon tonight according to his Twitter...
"Just finished shooting @jimmyfallon with my brother. Great times. Airs tonight. Chris Paul couldn't be nicer."
One thing I've noticed is that people that actually meet CP3 seem to like him. You'd have to be a hater to not like him. :-)

But then how does the saying go? If you don't have haters then you're probably not doing something right. Well, CP has a lot of haters.

Rajon Rondo is the dirtiest player in the league and it's not even close. CP is second I guess, Dahntay Jones is in the discussion for #2.
Seriously, Rondo is such a punk. I'm surprised Brad Miller didn't go to his house with a shotgun after the playoffs. And I don't think anyone that saw that game would have convicted him...

Yeah, Stefan is right. It came from some announcer my buddy was listening to on the radio. West had made his fourth jumper in a row, and the announcer said, "David West's jumper is as soft as fluffy bunnies."

I'm on the flopper/dirty distinction. Two things. Besides, even considering the non-Hornets-fans-hate for CP3, isn't Posey our most notorious player? Run a search on Youtube for Posey and dirty plays.

I love how smart, intense, physical CP is, and he definitely seeks out and initiates contact, and then plays it up for the refs. Watch him run through a screen (as a defender) - he hooks, elbows, traps big guys' arms, so that he is simultaneously punishing them for daring to screen him while also looking like the pitiable little victim of a brutal attack.
I will say that he is almost Shaq-like in that he must be impossible to referee. He is subjected to a crazy amount of contact (much of which he creates), and it seems like the refs just give up on calling everything. If they called it by the book, he'd foul out the entire other team some nights.
