Interesting article from Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, who reports that Emeka Okafor isn't winning over his Hornets' teammates with his slow recovery from that toe injury. A few excerpts:
An NBA source told Yahoo! Sports that Okafor was cleared to play by the Hornets’ medical staff two weeks ago and by his own doctor a week later. Most of Okafor’s teammates know he has been cleared and are eager to see whether he works out with them for the first time over the weekend.
“He better practice Sunday or he could lose some guys,” one Hornet said.
Prior to the Hornets’ shootaround on Thursday morning, Okafor acknowledged he has been medically cleared to play “based on how I feel.” He said he hopes to practice on Sunday.
“He might have been cleared medically, but from a mental standpoint he is not cleared,” New Orleans coach Byron Scott said. “In his mind, he says he’s not ready. When you have a guy that says he is not ready, the worst thing you can do is force him to get out there.”...
So far, Okafor hasn’t participated in anything with his teammates aside from walking through the Hornets’ offense during one practice. Point guard Chris Paul coaxed him to participate in the walk-through, one team source said...
Okafor said the injury has been more serious than it appears.
“You can ask anyone that’s had a toe injury, it sounds super weak and it sounds like an insignificant thing,” Okafor said. “But that’s your foundation. You can have a nice house, and a foundation has a crack in it and then it’s all for naught. The whole thing comes crumbling down.
“People don’t realize how much your toe has to do with your movements. That’s carrying your whole weight. If something is off that carries your whole weight and you’re not careful, it’s something that can trickle and cause other things to mess up. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. You want to give your body a chance to not only heal short-term, but long-term.”
I'm inclined to believe that Okafor is doing what he feels is best from him and the team. I buy that explanation he gives about his slow recovery. This is a guy that had some serious injury problems early in his career, missing a combined 80 games in his first three seasons. But he's played all 82 in the past two seasons, suggesting that he's taken better precautions to stay healthy.
After Tyson Chandler's injury woes last season, I'd rather see Okafor being overcautious in October, rather than him risk cracking that foundation and the team missing him in March and April.

So we've heard nothing but bad news coming out of the Hornets the past month or so. I can take it one of two ways:
1) They're going to be completely, utterly, TERRIBLE.
or
2) Like the Denver Broncos of this year, all of the offseason news makes it seem like they will be terrible, but then the team comes out of the gate in amazing fashion and all the nay-sayers are proven wrong.
But my god. I'm not excited at all for next Thursday.

On paper I know they shouldn't be TERRIBLE. But the preseason has me worried. "It's only the preseason" yeah yeah, but these aren't 5 losses. They're 5 butt kickings. Have any other teams been losing as BADLY as the Hornets have? Integrating 6 new guys is probably going to be a lot harder than we all assumed. There could be chemistry issues this team hasn't had to deal with recently.

An addition Re: Okafor. It's funny, because the team should already know about toe injuries, having been through this with Chandler. But Tyson was their friend, Emeka is not. He's new. It's kind of unfair, but probably true, that we just tend to cut more slack to the people who we are close with.

Sigh. I don't even know what to say. Generally, I'm optimistic, and still am, but this pre-season has been pretty disastrous.

I'm optimistic, or at least as optimistic as I can be when I believe our ceiling is the second round of the playoffs this season, even when healthy.
I just don't think we can expect a fast start. Like ticktock said, we have six new guys and most of them will have significant roles. It will probably be a rocky November, but I'd expect to see the team clicking nicely around the New Year.

I'm with you Niall. We will need some time to adjust, but I think it will happen eventually.
I won't read to much into this article. Many journalist are eager to "report an issue" especially regarding drama, but I am not buying it. First, Omeka was also harassed about his (was it?) palates routine by his former coach, but that is what (he claims) kept him healthy for 2 years. Second, CP3 and our other leaders are professionals and this type of remark isn't professional. I think this is a gimmick, just like when Paul was quoted about possibly being traded. The statement was taken totally out of context.
Omeka is a smart man, and he is not going to compromise his health for the media hype, and I am glad for this committment.
I would also trust Omeka more than Hornets medical staff. We all know where they got Tyson.

downtowndave78, when Spears first reported in his twitter yesterday that CP3 missed practice with flu like symptoms I was glad he wouldn't get to stick a recorder in CP's mouth because I just knew he was looking for something to 'use'. I don't think this is as big an issue as they're trying to make it out to be. At least I sure don't hope so. For both the teams and the fans sakes. One thing for certain is when a player says something hurts, none of us knows for sure because we are not the ones feeling what he feels. And yeah, the Hornets medical staff has been known for sucking. How in the world can they suck for such a long time? LOL! Emeka's own doctor cleared him so perhaps Emeka is trying to be cautious. Or is it possible his doctor is a part of the Hornets medical staff too? LOL! And in that case they probably have no idea what they're talking about. Can we switch places with the Suns medical staff?

I'm not putting much merit on this story I mean with all the stories we've heard about CP3 wanting out of NO, Scott looking to coach the Lakers next season why not this story? I mean what makes this story "interesting" is the fact that Okafor is in NO in place of Chris Paul's buddy TC. Giving them more reason to hype this story. For everything I've heard about Okafor, nothing points to him being a drama queen & holding out of practice. When the regular season comes around...we'll truly get a gauge on the Hornets!

Completely agree. Like everyone else, I doubt the article's implication very much. We all know how the media likes to spin this stuff. Perhaps there is some tension, wouldn't be surprising, but I doubt its a big deal.
I'm really anxious and excited for the season to start. I don't expect a fast start either... but this sucky preseason needs to be put in the past real quick.

My girlfriend is a building manager over at the Tulane gym. She told me that Emeka has been using the pool with a trainer so that at least would suggest that he's taking the injury seriously. This isn't just some guy who doesn't want to play.
Not a huge fan of the author sensationalizing this.
