And mercifully, the preseason has come to an end. The Hornets dropped their final exhibition game last night, losing to the Clippers in L.A., 88-91 ( box | recap ). Here's some highlights, featuring Hilton Armstrong getting punked twice by Blake Griffin:
Once again, I didn't get to see the game, but here's a few notes from the box score and around the interwebs...
- Still no play for Ike Diogu or Emeka Okafor. Let the speculation begin as to whether they'll be ready for the regular season opener in San Antonio on Wednesday.
- Julian Wright and David West were back in action after both missing Thursday's game. JuJu had 8 points (3-6 FGs) and 7 boards in 25 minutes, while West scored 18 (8-18 FGs) and grabbed 7 in 35 minutes.
- Chris Paul sat out his second consecutive game with a cold. Marcus Thornton was a DNP-CD.
- Peja Stojakovic was hot, knocking down all three of his triples and finishing with a team-high 19 points in 24 minutes off the pine.
- Hilton Armstrong: 13 points (5-10 FGs), 7 boards and 5 turnovers in 35 minutes. Overall, he hasn't played bad in the preseason, but I hope and pray that we don't see him as a starter next week.
- Byron Scott quoted in the Times-Picayune: "Defensive rotation and communication are the two areas we have to get better in. The initial part of our defense was pretty good tonight. So, I was pretty happy about that. But on some of the rotations, guys are still standing around when the ball is moving.''
- Rasual Butler, starting at shooting guard for the Clips, scored 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. He's started five of L.A.'s eight preseason games, but head coach Mike Dunleavy hasn't decided if he'll start Butler or Al Thornton at that spot on opening night.
- That's the last of the replacement refs.
- The Hornets averaged 93.3 points per game in the preseason. Opposing teams averaged 103.3ppg. That 10-point differential is the second-worst the Hornets have ever had in the preseason. They were -10.5 back in 1998-99, but that was the lockout-shortened season, when they played just two exhibition games (both against the Hawks).
- In other news, former Chris Paul back-ups are dropping like flies: Bobby Jackson is retiring, and Antonio Daniels just got waived.
So the Hornets finish their preseason with a 2-6 record. That .250 winning percentage is the lowest in the Western Conference, and beat only by the Nets in the East, who lost all but one exhibition game.

Can you give us some more details on Diogu's situation specifically?

I saw the game, and I'll add that information to a breakdown of the Hornet's Pre-season play and what I think it means for the team. I'll address each player.

Hey Ryan, was it on League Pass?
bniz, Diogu has been bothered by a strained left knee; strained it lifting weights in the offseason. He was recovering nicely earlier this month, but then aggravated it in his first scrimmage on October 12th. He's been day-to-day since then. It seems before every preseason game we've been hearing that he might play, but he never did. It doesn't sound all that serious of an injury, just one of those frustrating things that's hard to shake completely.

Question of the day- I'm glad with the Daniels trade, so I am not second guessing that. This is just a question of curiosity.
If Daniels was waived by his new team than I am assuming he didn't have a guaranteed contract, so what was the big issue this summer with the luxury tax threshold and Daniels 5 million dollar contract? I know we needed a backup, but I never heard anyone mention that Daniels and his 5 mil guaranteed were expendable.

I saw the game last night on League pass. Hilton was being eaten alive by Blake Griffin. Bobby Brown pushed the tempo well. Juju knocked down a couple jumpers but horrible missed others. Peja was money.
Disappointed I didn't get to see Thornton though...

long time reader and i live in cali and this was the only pre season game i have seen so here is my take
bobby brown can not play d at all Baron Davis and S.Telfair kept burning him to the basket. collison was a little better at guarding b davis put turned the ball over a litle mor than i thought he would.
Hilton seems to be trying but was a little sad griffin blocked is shot.
peja was hot even got a steal and took it.
the thing i noticed the most was the lack of passing in the half court
i am not a stats guy but most of the plays they did two or three passes it was a missed shot or a bad shot
and when did five or more it was a turnover
and they passed the ball 4 times once that whole game and it was three by peja.
i am not complaining i was happy to see the game howevere was mad at the effort i rather have bad record and compete then have a loss like this

i also saw them(hornets) double team on the 3pt line right away i know coach scott preaches defense and help and all every time they did that the clippers got a open shot i am no expert and all but i do not think that is a good idea considering they still had there dribble.

Without CP3 and a real center the Clippers should have buried the Hornets.

I saw most of the first half, and we weren't getting bad looks early on at all. It's just that guys like D West and Morris Peterson could not hit the open shots they're supposed to.
We also kept running the same play where a guy would catch the ball at the elbow, and would then get a screen right there from a wing player usually to create something. It was kind of weird. Wasn't too effective last night.

Yah I went to the game and I had the same thoughts but my biggest concern was our help defense. It seemed as though the 2nd and 3rd passes killed us cause guys were late switchin over. (oh I guess kind of like Byron mentioned) Does anyone know why Devin Brown is gettin so much playing time? I went to the game hoping to see alot from some of our new guys and of course I saw some but 0 minutes for Thornton? I've heard good stuff bout him but haven't got a look yet!
